Fabrication of graphene oxide/montmorillonite nanocomposite flexible thin films with improved gas-barrier properties

Nanocomposites are potential substitutes for inorganic materials in fabricating flexible gas-barrier thin films. In this study, two nanocomposites are used to form a flexible gas-barrier film that shows improved flexibility and a decreased water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), thereby extending the diffusion path length for gas molecules. The nanoclay materials used for the flexible gas-barrier thin film are Na⁺-montmorillonite (MMT) and graphene oxide (GO). A flexible gas-barrier thin film was fabricated using a layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition method, exploiting electronic bonding under non-vacuum conditions. The WVTR of the film, in which each layer was laminated by LBL assembly, was analyzed by Ca-test and the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) was analyzed by MOCON. When GO and MMT are used together, they fill each other's vacancies and form a gas-barrier film with high optical transmittance and the improved WVTR of 3.1 × 10^-3 g per m² per day without a large increase in thickness compared to barrier films produced with GO or MMT alone. Thus, this film has potential applicability as a barrier film in flexible electronic devices.

Three-Dimensional Porous Nitrogen-Doped NiO Nanostructures as Highly Sensitive NO₂ Sensors

Nickel oxide has been widely used in chemical sensing applications, because it has an excellent p-type semiconducting property with high chemical stability. Here, we present a novel technique of fabricating three-dimensional porous nitrogen-doped nickel oxide nanosheets as a highly sensitive NO₂ sensor. The elaborate nanostructure was prepared by a simple and effective hydrothermal synthesis method. Subsequently, nitrogen doping was achieved by thermal treatment with ammonia gas. When the p-type dopant, i.e., nitrogen atoms, was introduced in the three-dimensional nanostructures, the nickel-oxide-nanosheet-based sensor showed considerable NO₂ sensing ability with two-fold higher responsivity and sensitivity compared to non-doped nickel-oxide-based sensors.

Metal Nanoparticle Growth within Clay-Polymer Nacre-Inspired Materials for Improved Catalysis and Plasmonic Detection in Complex Biofluids

Recent studies have shown that layered silicate clays can be used to form a nacre-like bioinspired layered structure with various polymer fillers, leading to composite films with good material strength, gas-barrier properties, and high loading capacity. We go one step further by in situ growing metal nanoparticles in nacre-like layered films based on layered silicate clays, which can be used for applications in plasmonic sensing and catalysis. The degree of anisotropy of the nanoparticles grown in the film can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of clay to polymer or gold to clay and reducing agent concentration, as well as silver overgrowth, which greatly enhances the surface enhanced Raman scattering activity of the composite. We show the performance of the films for SERS detection of bacterial quorum sensing molecules in culture medium, and catalytic properties are demonstrated through the reduction of 4-nitroaniline. These films serve as the first example of seedless, in situ nanoparticle growth within nacre-mimetic materials, and open the path to basic research on the influence of different building blocks and polymeric mortars on nanoparticle morphology and distribution, as well as applications in catalysis, sensing, and antimicrobial surfaces using such materials.

Chitosan nanocomposites based on distinct inorganic fillers for biomedical applications

Chitosan (CHI), a biocompatible and biodegradable polysaccharide with the ability to provide a non-protein matrix for tissue growth, is considered to be an ideal material in the biomedical field. However, the lack of good mechanical properties limits its applications. In order to overcome this drawback, CHI has been combined with different polymers and fillers, leading to a variety of chitosan-based nanocomposites. The extensive research on CHI nanocomposites as well as their main biomedical applications are reviewed in this paper. An overview of the different fillers and assembly techniques available to produce CHI nanocomposites is presented. Finally, the properties of such nanocomposites are discussed with particular focus on bone regeneration, drug delivery, wound healing and biosensing applications.

Nacre-mimetic epoxy matrix composites reinforced by two-dimensional glass reinforcements

Inspired by the micro-scale architecture of nacre, epoxy matrix bulk composites reinforced by aligned 2D glass reinforcements were fabricated using a novel, one-step and time/man-power efficient process called hot-press assisted slip casting (HASC).

Strong and moldable cellulose magnets with high ferrite nanoparticle content

A major limitation in the development of highly functional hybrid nanocomposites is brittleness and low tensile strength at high inorganic nanoparticle content. Herein, cellulose nanofibers were extracted from wood and individually decorated with cobalt-ferrite nanoparticles and then for the first time molded at low temperature (<120 °C) into magnetic nanocomposites with up to 93 wt % inorganic content. The material structure was characterized by TEM and FE-SEM and mechanically tested as compression molded samples. The obtained porous magnetic sheets were further impregnated with a thermosetting epoxy resin, which improved the load-bearing functions of ferrite and cellulose material. A nanocomposite with 70 wt % ferrite, 20 wt % cellulose nanofibers, and 10 wt % epoxy showed a modulus of 12.6 GPa, a tensile strength of 97 MPa, and a strain at failure of ca. 4%. Magnetic characterization was performed in a vibrating sample magnetometer, which showed that the coercivity was unaffected and that the saturation magnetization was in proportion with the ferrite content. The used ferrite, CoFe2O4, is a magnetically hard material, demonstrated by that the composite material behaved as a traditional permanent magnet. The presented processing route is easily adaptable to prepare millimeter-thick and moldable magnetic objects. This suggests that the processing method has the potential to be scaled-up for industrial use for the preparation of a new subcategory of magnetic, low-cost, and moldable objects based on cellulose nanofibers.

Facile access to large-scale, self-assembled, nacre-inspired, high-performance materials with tunable nanoscale periodicities

Although advances have been reported to mimic the mechanically excellent structure of natural nacre, larger-scale applications are still limited due to time and energy-intensive preparation pathways. Herein, we demonstrate that simple high-shear homogenization of dispersions containing biobased high molecular weight sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (700 kg/mol, CMC) and natural sodium montmorillonite (MTM), serving as the soft energy-dissipating phase and reinforcing platelets, respectively, can be used to prepare large-area and thick films with well-aligned hard/soft nacre-mimetic mesostructure. During this process, core-shell nanoplatelets with intrinsic hard/soft structure form, which then self-assemble into a layered nanocomposite during water removal. The nanoscale periodicities of the alternating hard/soft layers can be precisely tuned by changing the ratio of CMC to MTM, which allows studying the evolution of mechanical properties as a function of the lamellar nanoscale periodicity and fractions of hard to soft material. Remarkable mechanical stiffness (25 GPa) and strength (320 MPa) can be obtained placing these materials among the top end of nacre-inspired materials reported so far. Mechanical homogenization also allows direct preparation of concentrated, yet homogeneous, gel-like dispersions of high nanoclay content, suited to doctor-blade large-area and thick films with essentially the same properties as films cast from dilute dispersions. In terms of functional properties, we report high-transparency, shape-persistent fire-blocking and the ability to surface-pattern via inkjet printing. Considering the simple, fully scalable, waterborne preparation pathway, and the use of nature-based components, we foresee applications as ecofriendly, bioinspired materials to promote sustainable engineering materials and novel types of functional barrier coatings and substrates.
