Abstract
An expedient one-pot sustainable synthesis of quinoline analogues was developed via protection-free chemo-selective oxidation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohols to form aldehydes, followed by annulation with various 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds or nitriles under mild reaction conditions in an acetonitrile-water medium using a copper catalyst and new hydrogen bond-rich glucose-based ionic liquids (GSILs). Overall, 40 functionalized quinolines were synthesized with up to 93% yields following significant green chemistry parameters. The developed GSILs were recyclable with not much decrease in the yields of the products and the reaction rate.

Abstract
Herein, we report palladium supported on a hydroxyapatite catalyst for synthesizing tri-substituted pyridines using ammonium acetate as the nitrogen source via acceptorless alcohol dehydrogenation strategy. The strategy offers a broad substrate scope using inexpensive and readily available alcohols as the starting material. The catalyst was prepared using a simple method and analyzed by several techniques, including FE-SEM, EDS, HR-TEM, BET, XRD, FT-IR, UV-visible spectroscopy, and XPS, demonstrating the anchoring of Pd nanoparticles on hydroxyapatite in the zero oxidation state. Moreover, several controlled experiments were carried out to understand the reaction pathway and a suitable mechanism has been proposed.

Abstract
This manuscript describes the synthesis of a triazolyl-pyridine-based phosphine, N-((diphenylphosphaneyl)methyl)-N-methyl-6-(1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridin-2-amine, [2,6-{(PPh2)CH2N(Me)(C5H3N)(C2HN3C6H5)}] (1) (here onwards referred to as PNN) and its cationic and neutral MnI complexes and catalytic applications. The reaction of 1 with Mn(CO)5Br afforded a cationic complex [Mn(CO)3(PNN)]Br (2), which is highly stable in solid state, but in solution it gradually loses one of the CO groups to form a neutral complex [Mn(CO)2(PNN)Br] (3). Complex 2 on treatment with AgBF4 also yielded a cationic complex [Mn(CO)3(PNN)]BF4 (4). These complexes efficiently promoted the synthesis of quinoline derivatives via acceptor-less dehydrogenative coupling of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol and ketones, with complex 3 showing the highest activity with a very low catalyst loading (0.03 mol%) at 110 °C. Complex 3 (0.5 mol%) also showed excellent catalytic activity in the transfer hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes to form respective secondary and primary alcohols.

Abstract
In this work, we have constructed three new Co(II) complexes in which steric features govern their structural geometry. The metal ligand-cooperation behavior of the alkoxy arm is utilized to explore the catalytic activities of these complexes with respect to dehydrogenation. A wide range of C-3-substituted quinoline and quinazoline derivatives were synthesized in high yields. The developed protocol's usefulness is enhanced by the chemoselective transformation of different fatty alcohols to synthesize heterocycles having distal unsaturation. Various kinetic, mechanistic, and control studies were conducted to comprehend the reaction route.

Abstract
A Ru(II)-catalyzed efficient and selective N-alkylation of amines by C1-C10 aliphatic alcohols is reported. The catalyst [Ru(L1a)(PPh3)Cl2] (1a) bearing a tridentate redox-active azo-aromatic pincer, 2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L1a) is air-stable, easy to prepare, and showed wide functional group tolerance requiring only 1.0 mol % (for N-methylation and N-ethylation) and 0.1 mol % of catalyst loading for N-alkylation with C3-C10 alcohols. A wide array of N-methylated, N-ethylated, and N-alkylated amines were prepared in moderate to good yields via direct coupling of amines and alcohols. 1a efficiently catalyzes the N-alkylation of diamines selectively. It is even suitable for synthesizing N-alkylated diamines using (aliphatic) diols producing the tumor-active drug molecule MSX-122 in moderate yield. 1a showed excellent chemo-selectivity during the N-alkylation using oleyl alcohol and monoterpenoid β-citronellol. Control experiments and mechanistic investigations revealed that the 1a-catalyzed N-alkylation reactions proceed via a borrowing hydrogen transfer pathway where the hydrogen removed from the alcohol during the dehydrogenation step is stored in the ligand backbone of 1a, which in the subsequent steps transferred to the in situ formed imine intermediate to produce the N-alkylated amines.

Abstract
Herein, we report a Zn(II)-catalyzed solvent-free sustainable synthesis of tri- and tetra-substituted pyridines using alcohols as the primary feedstock and NH4OAc as the nitrogen source. Using a well-defined air-stable Zn(II)-catalyst, 1a, featuring a redox-active tridentate azo-aromatic pincer, 2-((4-chlorophenyl)diazenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (La), a wide variety of unsymmetrical 2,4,6-substituted pyridines were prepared by three-component coupling of primary and secondary alcohols with NH4OAc. Catalyst 1a is equally compatible with the four-component coupling. Unsymmetrical 2,4,6-substituted pyridines were also prepared via a four-component coupling of a primary alcohol with two different secondary alcohols and NH4OAc. A series of tetra-substituted pyridines were prepared up to 67% yield by coupling primary and secondary alcohols with 1-phenylpropan-1-one or 1,2-diphenylethan-1-one and NH4OAc. The 1a-catalyzed reactions also proceeded efficiently upon replacing the secondary alcohols with the corresponding ketones, producing the desired tri- and tetra-substituted pyridines in higher yields in a shorter reaction time. A few control experiments were performed to unveil the mechanistic aspects, which indicates that the active participation of the aryl-azo ligand during catalysis enables the Zn(II)-complex to act as an efficient catalyst for the present multicomponent reactions. Aerial oxygen acts as an oxidant during the Zn(II)-catalyzed dehydrogenation of alcohols, producing H2O and H2O2 as byproducts.

Abstract
The discovery of reactions is a central topic in chemistry and especially interesting if access to compound classes, which have not yet been synthesized, is permitted. N-Heterocyclic compounds are very important due to their numerous applications in life and material science. We introduce here a consecutive three-component reaction, classes of N-heterocyclic compounds, and the associated synthesis concept (regenerative cyclisation). Our reaction starts with a diamine, which reacts with an amino alcohol via dehydrogenation, condensation, and cyclisation to form a new pair of amines that undergoes ring closure with an aldehyde, carbonyldiimidazole, or a dehydrogenated amino alcohol. Hydrogen is liberated in the first reaction step and the dehydrogenation catalyst used is based on manganese.

Abstract
We disclose herein a catalytic borrowing hydrogen method that enables an unprecedented, economical one-pot access to enantiopure tetrahydropyridines with minimal reagent use or waste formation. This method couples a few classes of readily available substrates with commercially available 1,3-amino alcohols, and delivers the valuable tetrahydropyridines of different substitution patterns free of N-protection. Such transformations are highly challenging to achieve, as multiple redox steps need to be realized in a cascade and numerous side reactions including a facile aromatization have to be overcome. Highly diastereoselective functionalizations of tetrahydropyridines also result in a general access to enantiopure di- and tri-substituted piperidines, which ranks the topmost frequent N-heterocycle in commercial drugs.

Abstract
We have reported a metal-free protocol for the synthesis of indenoquinolinones and 2-substituted quinolines via [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction using readily available 2-aminobenzaldehydes and ketones as starting materials. Different quinoline derivatives can be selectively synthesized by changing the type of ketones. O2 and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as co-oxidants play an important role in the synthesis of indenoquinolinones. This condensation/oxidation strategy involves the formation of C-N, C-C, and C-O bonds, with the advantages of high yields and a broad substrate range.

Abstract
This report describes synthesis of two ruthenium(II) ENE pincer complexes (E = S, C1 and E = Se, C2 ) by the reaction of bis(2-(phenylchalcogenyl)ethyl)amine ( L1 , L2 ) with RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 . The complexes were characterized with the help of 1 H and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR, FTIR, HRMS, cyclic voltammetry and elemental analysis techniques. The structure and bonding mode of ligand with ruthenium in C2 was established with the help of single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex showed distorted octahedral geometry with two chlorine atoms trans to each other. The Ru-Se bond distances (Å) are 2.4564(3)-2.4630(3), Ru-N distance is 2.181(2), Ru-P distance is 2.2999(6), and Ru-Cl distances are 2.4078(6)-2.4314(6). The complexes showed good to excellent catalytic activity for the N -alkylation of 1,2-phenylenediamine with benzyl alcohol derivatives to synthesize 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole derivatives. The complexes were also found to be efficient for aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohols to corresponding aldehydes which are precursors to the bisimines generated in situ during the synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole derivatives. Complex C2 where selenium is coordinated with ruthenium was found to be more efficient as compared to sulfur coordinated ruthenium complex C1 . Since ruthenium complexes are getting increasing attention for developing new anticancer agents, the preliminary studies like binding behavior of both the complexes towards CT-DNA were studied by competitive binding with ethidium bromide (EthBr) using emission spectroscopy. In addition, the interactions of C1-C2 were also studied with bovine serum albumin (BSA) using steady state fluorescence quenching and synchronous fluorescence studies. A good stability of Ru(II) state was observed by cyclic voltammetric studies of C1-C2 . Overall these molecules are good examples of bio-organometallic systems for catalytic and biological applications.

Abstract
Syntheses of N-heterocyclic compounds that permit a flexible introduction of various substitution patterns by using inexpensive and diversely available starting materials are highly desirable. Easy to handle and reusable catalysts based on earth-abundant metals are especially attractive for these syntheses. We report here on the synthesis of 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles via the hydrogenation and cyclization of nitro ketones. The latter are easily accessible from three components: a ketone, an aldehyde and a nitroalkane. Our reaction has a broad scope and 23 of the 33 products synthesized are compounds which have not yet been reported. The key to the general hydrogenation/cyclization reaction is a highly active, selective and reusable nickel catalyst, which was identified from a library of 24 earth-abundant metal catalysts.

Abstract
Herein, we report a simple, phosphine-free, and inexpensive catalytic system based on a manganese(II) complex for synthesizing different important N-heterocycles such as quinolines, pyrroles, and pyridines from amino alcohols and ketones. Several control experiments, kinetic studies, and DFT calculations were carried out to support the plausible reaction mechanism. We also detected two potential intermediates in the catalytic cycle using ESI-MS analysis. Based on these studies, a metal-ligand cooperative mechanism was proposed.

Abstract
Catalysis offers a straightforward route to prepare various value-added molecules starting from readily available raw materials. The catalytic reactions mostly involve multi-electron transformations. Hence, compared to the inexpensive and readily available 3d-metals, the 4d and 5d-transition metals get an extra advantage for performing multi-electron catalytic reactions as the heavier transition metals prefer two-electron redox events. However, for sustainable development, these expensive and scarce heavy metal-based catalysts need to be replaced by inexpensive, environmentally benign, and economically affordable 3d-metal catalysts. In this regard, a metal-ligand cooperative approach involving transition metal complexes of redox noninnocent ligands offers an attractive alternative. The synergistic participation of redox-active ligands during electron transfer events allows multi-electron transformations using 3d-metal catalysts and allows interesting chemical transformations using 4d and 5d-metals as well. Herein we summarize an up-to-date literature report on the metal-ligand cooperative approaches using transition metal complexes of redox noninnocent ligands as catalysts for a few selected types of catalytic reactions.

Abstract
N-Heterocycles, such as pyrroles, pyrimidines, quinazolines, and quinoxalines, are important building blocks for organic chemistry and the fine-chemical industry. For their synthesis, catalytic borrowing hydrogen and acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling reactions of alcohols as sustainable reagents have received significant attention in recent years. To overcome the problems of product separation and catalyst reusability, several metal-based heterogeneous catalysts have been reported to achieve these transformations with good yields and selectivity. In this Minireview, we summarize recent developments using both noble and non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts to synthesize N-heterocycles from alcohols and N-nucleophiles via acceptorless dehydrogenation or borrowing hydrogen methodologies. Furthermore, this Minireview introduces strategies for the preparation and functionalization of the corresponding heterogeneous catalysts, discusses the reaction mechanisms and the roles of metal electronic states, and the influence of support Lewis acid-base properties on these reactions.

Abstract
Herein we report nickel-catalyzed sustainable synthesis of a few chosen five-membered fused nitrogen heterocycles such as benzimidazole, purine, benzothiazole, and benzoxazole via acceptorless dehydrogenative functionalization of alcohols. Using a bench stable, easy to prepare, and inexpensive Ni(ii)-catalyst, [Ni(MeTAA)] (1a), featuring a tetraaza macrocyclic ligand (tetramethyltetraaza[14]annulene (MeTAA)), a wide variety of polysubstituted benzimidazole, purine, benzothiazole, and benzoxazole derivatives were prepared via dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with 1,2-diaminobenzene, 4,5-diaminopyrimidine, 2-aminothiphenol, and 2-aminophenol, respectively. A wide array of benzimidazoles were also prepared via a borrowing hydrogen approach involving alcohols as hydrogen donors and 2-nitroanilines as hydrogen acceptors. A few control experiments were performed to understand the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
The development of sustainable catalytic protocols that circumvent the use of expensive and precious metal catalysts and avoid toxic reagents plays a crucial role in organic synthesis. Indeed, the direct employment of simple and abundantly available feedstock chemicals as the starting materials broadens their synthetic application in contemporary research. In particular, the transition metal-catalyzed diversification of alcohols with various nucleophilic partners to construct a wide range of building blocks is a powerful and highly desirable methodology. Moreover, the replacement of precious metal catalysts by non-precious and less toxic metals for selective transformations is one of the main goals and has been paid significant attention to in modern chemistry. In view of this, the first-row transition metal catalysts find extensive applications in various synthetic transformations such as catalytic hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and related reactions. Herein, we have disclosed our recent developments on the base-metal catalysis such as Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni for the acceptorless dehydrogenation reactions and its application in the C-C and C-N bond formation via hydrogen auto-transfer (HA) and acceptorless dehydrogenation coupling (ADC) reactions. These HA/ADC protocols employ alcohol as alkylating agents and eliminate water and/or hydrogen gas as by-products, representing highly atom-efficient and environmentally benign reactions. Furthermore, diverse simple to complex organic molecules synthesis by C-C and C-N bond formation using feedstock alcohols are also overviewed. Overall, this account deals with the contribution and development of efficient and novel homogeneous as well as heterogeneous base-metal catalysts for sustainable chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Base-metal catalysts Co1, Co2 and Co3 were synthesized from designed pincer ligands L1, L2 and L3 having NNN donor atoms respectively. Co1, Co2 and Co3 were characterized by IR, UV-Vis. and ESI-MS spectroscopic studies. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were investigated to authenticate the molecular structures of Co1 and Co3. Catalysts Co1, Co2 and Co3 were utilized to study the dehydrogenative activation of alcohols for N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines. Under optimized reaction conditions, a broad range of substrates including alcohols, anilines and ketones were exploited. A series of control experiments for N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines were examined to understand the reaction pathway. ESI-MS spectral studies were investigated to characterize cobalt-alkoxide and cobalt-hydride intermediates. Reduction of styrene by evolved hydrogen gas during the reaction was investigated to authenticate the dehydrogenative nature of the catalysts. Probable reaction pathways were proposed for N-alkylation of amines, α-alkylation of ketones and synthesis of quinolines on the basis of control experiments and detection of reaction intermediates.

Abstract
A Cu-catalyzed, easily scalable one-pot synthesis of fused pyridines by the reaction of cyclic ketones with propargylamine is described. The protocol was optimized based on the results of more than 30 experiments. The highest product yields were achieved in i-PrOH as a solvent in the presence of 5.0 mol % CuCl2 in air. In contrast to the well-known Au-catalyzed protocol, our procedure is "laboratory friendly", cost-effective, and suitable for preparing dozens of grams of fused pyridine-based building blocks and does not require a high-pressure autoclave technique. Decreasing the catalyst amount in the reaction to 1.25 mol % CuCl2 provided a yield comparable to that achieved with 5 mol % catalyst, though a longer reaction time was required. A plausible reaction mechanism was proposed. The scope and limitation of the reaction were studied using 24 different cyclic ketones as starting materials. The fused pyridine yield decreased among cyclic ketones in the following order: six-membered ≫ eight-membered > five-membered ∼ seven-membered. The elaborated reaction conditions demonstrated tolerance to a number of protective functional groups in ketone such as ester, tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc)-protected amine, and acetal moieties.

Abstract
A redox-active iminoquinone motif connected with π-delocalized pyrene core has been reported that can perform efficient two-electron oxidation of a class of substrates. The design of the molecule was inspired by the organic redox cofactor topaquinone (TPQ), which executes amine oxidation in the enzyme, copper amine oxidase. Easy oxidation of both primary and secondary alcohols happened in the presence of catalytic KOtBu, which could reduce the ligand backbone to its iminosemiquinonate form under photoinduced conditions. Moreover, this easy oxidation of alcohols under aerobic condition could be elegantly extended to multi-component, one-pot coupling for the synthesis of quinoline and pyrimidine. This organocatalytic approach is very mild (70 °C, 8 h) compared to a multitude of transition-metal catalysts that have been used to prepare these heterocycles. A detailed mechanistic study proves the intermediacy of the iminosemiquinonate-type radical and a critical hydrogen atom transfer step to be involved in the dehydrogenation reaction.

Abstract
Dehydrogenative coupling-based reactions have emerged as an efficient route toward the synthesis of a plethora of heterocyclic rings. Herein, we report an efficacious, nickel-catalyzed synthesis of two important heterocycles such as quinoline and quinoxaline. The catalyst is molecularly defined, is phosphine-free, and can operate at a mild reaction temperature of 80 °C. Both the heterocycles can be easily assembled via double dehydrogenative coupling, starting from 2-aminobenzyl alcohol/1-phenylethanol and diamine/diol, respectively, in a shorter span of reaction time. This environmentally benign synthetic protocol employing an inexpensive catalyst can rival many other transition-metal systems that have been developed for the fabrication of two putative heterocycles. Mechanistically, the dehydrogenation of secondary alcohol follows clean pseudo-first-order kinetics and exhibits a sizable kinetic isotope effect. Intriguingly, this catalyst provides an example of storing the trapped hydrogen in the ligand backbone, avoiding metal-hydride formation. Easy regeneration of the oxidized form of the catalyst under aerobic/O2 oxidation makes this protocol eco-friendly and easy to handle.
