Research Progress on Up-Conversion Fluorescence Probe for Detection of Perfluorooctanoic Acid in Water Treatment

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a new type of organic pollutant in wastewater that is persistent, toxic, and accumulates in living organisms. The development of rapid and sensitive analytical methods to detect PFOA in environmental media is of great importance. Fluorescence detection has the advantages of high efficiency and low cost, in which fluorescent probes have excellent fluorescence properties, excellent bio-solubility, and remarkable photostability. It is necessary to review the fluorescence detection routes for PFOA. In addition, the up-conversion of fluorescent materials (UCNPs), as fluorescent materials to prepare fluorescent probes with, has significant advantages and also attracts the attention of researchers, however, reviews related to their application in detecting PFOA and comparing them with other routes are rare. Furthermore, there are many strategies to improve the performance of up-conversion fluorescent probes including SiO₂ modification and amino modification. These strategies can enhance the detection effect of PFOA. Thus, this work reviews the types of fluorescence detection, the design, and synthesis of UCNPs, their recognition mechanism, properties, and their application progress. Moreover, the development trend and prospects of these detection probes are given.

A red-emitting Europium(III) complex as a luminescent probe with large Stokes shift for the sequential determination of Cu2+ and biothiols in real samples

In this work, a novel Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC) complex with red luminescence was designed and synthesized for sequential detection of Cu²⁺ and biothiols (Cys/Hcy/GSH) based on the displacement strategy with the good selectivity, high sensitivity, and large Stokes shift (288 nm). The possible detection mechanism was verified by UV-vis, the high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the fluorescence decay curve. The experimental parameters, including the solution pH, the incubation time, the concentration ratio of Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC) to Cu²⁺ and biothiols concentration, were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, it shows a good linear relationship between the concentration (0-10 μM) of Cu²⁺ and the fluorescence intensity of Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC), with a low detection limit of 0.065 μM. The linear range and the limit of detection of the Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC)/Cu²⁺ system for Cys/Hcy/GSH were 2.5-22.5/5-45/5-50 μM and 0.11/0.07/0.05 μM, respectively. Surprisingly, the high or low concentration of Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC)/Cu²⁺ can significantly affect the selectivity of the sensing system to biothiols (Cys/GSH/Hcy). When the concentration of the Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC)/Cu²⁺ system is 10.0 μΜ, it could recognize biothiols (Cys/GSH/Hcy) from other substances, but when the concentration is as low as 3.3 μM, it could further specifically distinguished Cys from Hcy/GSH. Owing to the high anti-interference characteristics, accuracy and specificity, the sensing system was well applied to the cascade detection of Cu²⁺ in actual environmental samples and Cys in biological and food samples, including FBS, urine, milk, beverage, fresh juice with the satisfactory recoveries from 96.20 to 106.80 %.

Stable Eu3+/Cu2+-Functionalized Supramolecular Zinc(II) Complexes as Fluorescent Probes for Turn-On and Ratiometric Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide

Fabrication of dual-emitting materials for H₂S sensing under environmental and biological conditions is currently of great interest. In this work, a new chemically stable metal supramolecular complex [Zn₂(pda)₂(H₂O)₃]·(H₂O)_0.5 (Znpda, pda = 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid), with accessible uncoordinated carboxylic oxygen sites, is solvothermally synthesized. It can serve as a host in luminescent hybrid composites. By incorporating Eu³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in the supramolecular coordination network, we obtained the dual-emitting hybrid material Eu³⁺/Cu²⁺@Znpda, which simultaneously shows intense ligand and weak Eu³⁺ emissions in HEPES buffer solution. Since H₂S can easily chelate with Cu²⁺ and recover the blocked "antenna effect" between the ligand and Eu³⁺, Eu³⁺/Cu²⁺@Znpda possesses both the turn-on and ratiomectric fluorescence response to H₂S. Accordingly, we designed an IMPLICATION logic gate for H₂S recognition by employing the fluorescence intensity ratio between the ligand and Eu³⁺ as the output signal. In addition, Eu³⁺/Cu²⁺@Znpda shows a fast response (<1 min) and high sensitivity (1.45 μM) to H₂S over other interfering species in the HEPES buffer solution, highlighting its potential use for H₂S sensing under environmental and biological conditions.

A Water-Gated Organic Thin-Film Transistor for Glyphosate Detection: A Comparative Study with Fluorescence Sensing

This work reports the design of a highly sensitive solid-state sensor device based on a water-gated organic thin-film transistor (WG-OTFT) for the selective detection of herbicide glyphosate (GlyP) in water. A competitive assay among carboxylate-functionalized polythiophene, Cu2+ , and GlyP was employed as a sensing mechanism. Molecular recognition phenomena and electrical double layer (EDL) (at the polymer/water interface) originated from the field-effect worked cooperatively to amplify the sensitivity for GlyP. The limit of detection of WG-OTFT (0.26 ppm) was lower than that of a fluorescence sensor chip (0.95 ppm) which is the conventional sensing method. In contrast to the previously reported insulated molecular wires to block interchain interactions, molecular aggregates under the field-effect has shown to be effective for amplification of sensitivity through "intra"- and "inter"-molecular wire effects. The opposite strategy in this study could pave the way for fully utilizing the sensing properties of polymer-based solid-state sensor devices.

A New 3D 10-Connected Cd(II) Based MOF With Mixed Ligands: A Dual Photoluminescent Sensor for Nitroaroamatics and Ferric Ion

The precise unification of functional groups and photoluminescence properties can give rise to MOFs that can offer diverse applications like selective detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) which are considered to be an important ingredient of explosive as well as cation and anion sensing. Hence, a new 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) [Cd2(btc)(bib)(HCOO)(H2O)·H2O]n (1) has been synthesized using mixed ligand strategy by solvothermal reaction of cadmium acetate with two ligands viz. 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3btc) and 1,4-bis(2-methyl-imidazol-1-yl)butane (bib). The MOF 1 possesses highly 10-connected network which is based on {Cd4(btc)2(bib)4} molecular building block. The studies showed that 1 could be taken as the fluorescent sensor for sensitive recognition of NACs, in particular 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with notable quenching (K sv = 5.42 × 104 M-1) and LOD of 1.77 ppm. Additionally, 1 also displayed selective sensing for Fe3+ ions with K sv = 6.05 × 103 M- 1 and LOD = 1.56 ppm. Also, this dual sensor displayed excellent reusability toward the detection of TNP and Fe3+ ion. Theoretical calculations have been performed to propose the probable mechanism for the sensing luminescence intensity. Calculations indicated that because of the charge transfer and weak interaction that is operating between NACs and MOF, the weakening in the photoluminescence intensity resulted.

Sensitive and rapid detection of aliphatic amines in water using self-stabilized micelles of fluorescent block copolymers

A kind of self-stabilized micelles of fluorescent block copolymers are constructed for rapid and sensitive detection of aliphatic amines in water based on capture-report strategy. An amphiphilic triblock copolymer functionalized with aggregation induced emission (AIE) chromophores self assembles into micelles with core-shell structures in aqueous solution. Hydrophobic AIE chromophores organize into cores, where hydrophobic interaction among the AIE chromophores inhibits the micelles from disassembling. The cores of AIE chromophores are surrounded by a corona of water-soluble polymer segments, endowing the micelles with superior dispersibility in water. Water-soluble polymer segments capture organic amines in water due to preferential hydrophobic interactions between them. The enriched amines in the corona subsequently diffuse into hydrophobic cores of micelles, quenching fluorescence of the AIE chromophores. The fluorescent micelles allow rapid detection of aliphatic amines in the order of seconds at a concentration as low as 8 μg/L.

Fixable Molecular Thermometer for Real-Time Visualization and Quantification of Mitochondrial Temperature

A change of mitochondrial temperature can be an important indicator of mitochondrial metabolism that generates considerable heat. For this reason, development of fluorescent probes to detect mitochondrial temperature has become an attractive topic. Previous efforts have successfully addressed the major issues, such as temperature sensitivity and mitochondrial targetability. However, there remains a key obstacle to practical applications. Considering the highly dynamic features of mitochondria, especially the variation of the inner-membrane potential, it is quite necessary to permanently immobilize a temperature probe in mitochondria in order to avoid unstable intracellular localization along with the changes of mitochondrial status. Herein, we report Mito-TEM, the first fixable, fluorescent molecular thermometer. Mito-TEM is based on a positively charged rhodamine B fluorophore that has the tendency of being attracted to mitochondria, which have negative potential. This fluorophore containing rotatable substituents also contributes to the temperature-responsive fluorescence property. Most importantly, a benzaldehyde is introduced in Mito-TEM as an anchoring unit that condenses with aminos of the protein and thus immobilizes the probe in mitochondria. The specific immobilization of Mito-TEM in mitochondria is unambiguously demonstrated in colocalization imaging. By using Mito-TEM, a method of visualizing and quantifying a temperature distribution through grayscale imaging of mitochondria is established and further applied to monitor the temperature changes of live cells under light heating and PMA stimulation.

Design and application of a fluorogenic receptor for selective sensing of cations, small neutral molecules, and anions

An unprecedented single multi-analyte fluorogenic receptor, a sodium salt of N-(methyl-2-thiophenyl)-tyrosine (NaHTyrthio), is reported for the selective sensing of cations (Cu²⁺), small neutral molecules (nitrobenzene and aniline) and anions (F⁻) by variable spectral responses.

Synthesis, Chemosensory Properties, and Self-Assembly of Terpyridine-Containing Conjugated Polycarbazole through RAFT Polymerization and Heck Coupling Reaction

We report the responsive fluorescence chemosensory phenomena of a carbazole-functionalized crosslinked polymer (PCaT) with pendent terpyridine (tpy) groups as receptors of metal ions. The polymer was synthesized using Heck polymerization between 3,6-dibromide groups in a carbazole-based polymer (PC2Br) and divinyl tpy monomer. The effects of the polymeric structure on the optical and chemosensory properties of the PCaT were compared with those of a carbazole-tpy alternating conjugated polymer (PCT). Photoluminescence titrations demonstrated that the PCaT and PCT had the high sensing ability toward Fe³⁺ ions, with Stern–Volmer constants of 8.10 × 10⁴ and 6.68 × 10⁴ M⁻¹, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) toward Fe³⁺ of the PCaT and PCT was estimated to be 1.31 × 10⁻⁶ and 1.81 × 10⁻⁶ M, respectively, and the superior LOD of the PCaT was ascribed to its lowly crosslinked structure. The fluorescence of the solutions of these polymers that were quenched by Fe³⁺ ions recovered when trace CN⁻ anions were added because of the high stability constant of the CN⁻–Fe³⁺ complex. Micellar aggregates with a mean diameter of approximately 239.5 nm were formed by dissolving the PCaT in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. Our results suggest that the PCaT is a promising material for chemosensory applications.

Aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics of quinoline based compound - A versatile fluorescent probe for pH, Fe(III) ion, BSA binding and optical cell imaging

Novel benzimidazoquinoline derivative (AVT) was synthesized through a substitution reaction and characterized by various spectral techniques. Analyzing the optical properties of AVT under absorption and emission spectral studies in different environments exclusively with respect to solvents and pH, intriguing characteristics viz. aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) in the THF solvent and 'On-Off' pH sensing were found at neutral pH. Sensing nature of AVT with diverse metal ions and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was also studied. Among the metal ions, Fe³⁺ ion alone tunes the fluorescence intensity of AVT probe in aqueous medium from "turn-on" to "turn-off" through ligand (probe) to metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism. The probe AVT in aqueous medium interacts strongly with BSA due to Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) and the conformational change in BSA was further analyzed using synchronous fluorescence techniques. Docking study of AVT with BSA reveals that the active site of binding is tryptophan residue which is also supported by the experimental results. Interestingly, fluorescent AVT probe in cells was examined through cellular imaging studies using BT-549 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Thus, the single molecule probe based detection of multiple species and stimuli were described.

Phenolic sensor development based on chromium oxide-decorated carbon nanotubes for environmental safety

A nanocomposite (NC) composed of chromium(III)oxide nanomaterials decorated carbon nanotubes (Cr₂O₃-CNT NC) was prepared via a simple solution method with reducing agents in an alkaline medium. The Cr₂O₃-CNT NC was characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vs.) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (XEDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The Cr₂O₃-CNT composite was deposited on a flat glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with conducting nafion (5%) binders to produce a sensor that exhibited fast response and high selectivity toward 4-methoxyphenol (4MP) in phosphate buffer phase at pH 7. Furthermore, the sensor performance parameters, including the sensitivity, lower detection range, reliability, and reproducibility, ease of integration, long-term stability, and selectivity were investigated in detail. The calibration plot was found to be linear in the concentration range of 0.01 nM-0.1 μM. The sensitivity and detection limit were calculated as 1.4768 μA cm^-2 μM^-1 and 0.06428 ± 0.0002 nM (at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3), respectively. Thus, it was concluded that the proposed selective and efficient sensor represents a promising approach to effectively detect toxic phenolic compounds in the environment with acceptable and reliable results.

A highly selective and sensitive turn-on fluorescent probe for the detection of Al3+ and its bioimaging

A novel fluorescent sensor, 1-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)urea (ocn) has been designed and applied as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probe for recognition of Al³⁺ in Tris-HCl (pH = 7.20) solution. The probe ocn exhibits an excellent selectivity to Al³⁺ over other examined metal ions, anions and amino acids with a prominent fluorescence 'turn-on' at 438 nm. ocn binds to Al³⁺ with a 2:1 binding stoichiometry and the detection limit was 0.3 μM. Furthermore, its capability of biological application was evaluated and the results showed that the sensor could be used to detect Al³⁺ in living cells.

This manuscript reports a couple of novel polymers of side-chain functionalized PEDOT. The new polymers can be employed to successfully recognize 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine enantiomers and we also discuss the mechanism of chiral recognition.

π-Conjugated polymer anisotropic organogel nanofibrous assemblies for thermoresponsive photonic switches

The present work demonstrates one of the first examples of π-conjugated photonic switches (or photonic wave plates) based on the tailor-made π-conjugated polymer anisotropic organogel. New semicrystalline segmented π-conjugated polymers are designed with rigid aromatic oligophenylenevinylene π-core and flexible alkyl chain along the polymer backbone. These polymers are found to be self-assembled as semicrystalline or amorphous with respect to the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl units. These semicrystalline polymers produce organogels having nanofibrous morphology of 20 nm thickness with length up to 5 μm. The polymer organogel is aligned in a narrow glass capillary, and this anisotropic gel device is further demonstrated as photonic switches. The glass capillary device behaves as typical λ/4 photonic wave plates upon the illumination of the plane polarized light. The λ/4 photonic switching ability is found to be maximum at θ = 45° angle under the cross polarizers. The orthogonal arrangements of the gel capillaries produce dark and bright spots as on-and-off optical switches. Thermoreversibility of the polymer organogel (also its xerogel) was exploited to construct thermoresponsive photonic switches for the temperature window starting from 25 to 160 °C. The organic photonic switch concept can be adapted to large number of other π-conjugated materials for optical communication and storage.
