Mechanochemical remediation of contaminated soil: A review

Mechanochemical techniques have been garnering growing attention in remediation of contaminated soil. This paper summarizes the performance, mechanism, influential factors, and environmental impacts of mechanochemical remediation (MCR) for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contaminated soil and heavy metal(loid) s (HMs) contaminated soil. Firstly, in contrast to other technologies, MCR can achieve desirable treatment of POPs, HMs, and co-contaminated soil, especially with high-concentration pollutants. Secondly, POPs undergo mineralization via interaction with mechanically activated substances, where aromatic and aliphatic pollutants in soil may go through varied degradation routes; inorganic pollutants can be firmly combined with soil particles by fragmentation and agglomeration induced by mechanical power, during which additives may enhance the combination but their contact with anionic metal(loid)s may be partially suppressed. Thirdly, the effect of MCR primarily hinges on types of milling systems, the accumulation of mechanical energy, and the use of reagents, which is basically regulated through operating parameters: rotation speed, ball-to-powder ratio, reagent-to-soil ratio, milling time, and soil treatment capacity; minerals like clay, metal oxides, and sand in soil itself are feasible reagents for remediation, and alien additives play a crucial role in synergist and detoxification; additionally, various physicochemical properties of soil might influence the mechanochemical effect to varying degrees, yet the key influential performance and mechanism remain unclear and require further investigation. Concerning the assessment of soil after treatment, attention needs to be paid to soil properties, toxicity of POPs' intermediates and leaching HMs, and long-term appraisement, particularly with the introduction of aggressive additives into the system. Finally, proposals for current issues and forthcoming advancements in this domain are enumerated in items. This review provides valuable insight into mechanochemical approaches for performing more effective and eco-friendly remediation on contaminated soil.

Mechanochemical Polyoxometalate Super-Reduction with Lithium Metal

In this first systematic investigation of mechanochemical polyoxometalate (POM) reduction, (TBA)3[PMo12O40] was reacted with n equiv of lithium metal (n = 1-24) to generate PMo12/n products which were shown to be mixtures of electron-rich PMo12Lix species. FTIR analysis revealed the lengthening/weakening of terminal Mo═O bonds with increasing levels of reduction, while EXAFS spectra indicated the onset of Mo-Mo bond formation at n ∼ 8 and a significant structural change at n > 12. Successive MoVI reductions were monitored by XANES and XPS, and at n = 24, results were consistent with the formation of at least one MoIV-MoIV bonded {MoIV3} triad together with MoV. Upon dissolution, the PMo12Lix species present in the solid PMo12/n products undergo electron exchange and single-peak 31P NMR spectra were observed for n = 1-12. For n ≥ 16, changes in solid state and solution 31P NMR spectra coincided with the emergence of features in the UV-vis spectra associated with MoV-MoV and {MoIV3} bonding in an ε-Keggin structure. Bonding between {Li(NCMe)}+ and 2-electron-reduced PMo12 in (TBA)4[PMo12O40{Li(NCMe)}] suggests that super-reduction gives rise to more extensive Li-O bonding that ultimately causes lithium-oxide-promoted TBA cation decomposition and POM degradation, which might explain the appearance of XPS peaks for Mo2C at n ≥ 16. This work has revealed some of the complex, unexplored chemistry of super-reduced POMs and establishes a new, solvent-free approach in the search for a better fundamental understanding of the electronic properties and reactivity of electron-rich nanoscale metal oxides.

Mechanochemistry in Glycation Research

Mechanochemistry by milling has recently attracted considerable interest for its ability to drive solvent-free chemical transformations exclusively through mechanical energy and at ambient temperatures. Despite its popularity and expanding applications in different fields of chemistry, its impact on Food Science remains limited. This review aims to demonstrate the specific benefits that mechanochemistry can provide in performing controlled glycation, and in "activating" sugar and amino acid mixtures, thereby allowing for continued generation of colors and aromas even after termination of milling. The generated mechanical energy can be tuned under specific conditions either to form only the corresponding Schiff bases and Amadori compounds or to generate their degradation products, as a function of the frequency of the oscillations in combination with the reactivity of the selected substrates. Similarly, its ability to initiate the Strecker degradation and generate pyrazines and Strecker aldehydes was also demonstrated when proteogenic amino acids were milled with glyoxal.

Mechanochemistry Drives Alkene Difunctionalization via Radical Ligand Transfer and Electron Catalysis

A general and modular protocol is reported for olefin difunctionalization through mechanochemistry, facilitated by cooperative radical ligand transfer (RLT) and electron catalysis. Utilizing mechanochemical force and catalytic amounts of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl (TEMPO), ferric nitrate can leverage nitryl radicals, transfer nitrooxy-functional group via RLT, and mediate an electron catalysis cycle under room temperature. A diverse range of activated and unactivated alkenes exhibited chemo- and regioselective 1,2-nitronitrooxylation under solvent-free or solvent-less conditions, showcasing excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies indicated a significant impact of mechanochemistry and highlighted the radical nature of this nitrative difunctionalization process.

Biomimetic Mechanical Robust Cement-Resin Composites with Machine Learning-Assisted Gradient Hierarchical Structures

Biological materials relying on hierarchically ordered architectures inspire the emergence of advanced composites with mutually exclusive mechanical properties, but the efficient topology optimization and large-scale manufacturing remain challenging. Herein, this work proposes a scalable bottom-up approach to fabricate a novel nacre-like cement-resin composite with gradient brick-and-mortar (BM) structure, and demonstrates a machine learning-assisted method to optimize the gradient structure. The fabricated gradient composite exhibits an extraordinary combination of high flexural strength, toughness, and impact resistance. Particularly, the toughness and impact resistance of such composite attractively surpass the cement counterparts by factors of approximately 700 and 600 times, and even outperform natural rocks, fiber-reinforced cement-based materials and even some alloys. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms are clarified as the regional-matrix densifying and crack-tip shielding effects caused by the gradient BM structure. The developed gradient composite not only endows a promising structural material for protective applications in harsh scenarios, but also paves a new way for biomimetic metamaterials designing.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Cross-Linked Chitosan and Its Application as Adsorbent for Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Simulated Electroplating Wastewater

Chitosan is a promising adsorbent for removing a wide range of pollutants from wastewater. However, its practical application is hindered by instability in acidic environments, which significantly impairs its adsorption capacity and limits its utilization in water purification. While cross-linking can enhance the acid stability of chitosan, current solvent-based methods are often costly and environmentally unfriendly. In this study, a solvent-free mechanochemical process was developed using high-energy ball milling to cross-link chitosan with various polyanionic linkers, including dextran sulfate (DS), poly[4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid] (PSSM), and tripolyphosphate (TPP). The mechanochemically cross-linked (MCCL) chitosan products exhibited superior adsorption capacity and stability in acidic solutions compared to pristine chitosan. Chitosan cross-linked with DS (Cht-DS) showed the highest Reactive Red 2 (RR2) adsorption capacity, reaching 1559 mg·g-1 at pH 3, followed by Cht-PSSM (1352 mg·g-1) and Cht-TPP (1074 mg·g-1). The stability of MCCL chitosan was visually confirmed by the negligible mass loss of Cht-DS and Cht-PSSM tablets in pH 3 solution, unlike the complete dissolution of the pristine chitosan tablet. The MCCL significantly increased the microhardness of chitosan, with the order Cht-DS > Cht-PSSM > Cht-TPP, consistent with the RR2 adsorption capacity. When tested on simulated rinsing wastewater from chromium electroplating, Cht-DS effectively removed Cr(VI) (98.75% removal) and three per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (87.40-95.87% removal), following pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. This study demonstrates the potential of the cost-effective and scalable MCCL approach to produce chitosan-based adsorbents with enhanced stability, mechanical strength, and adsorption performance for treating highly acidic industrial wastewater containing a mixture of toxic pollutants.

Mechanical activation induced treatment for the synergistic recovery of valuable elements from spent NdFeB magnets

The efficient and sustainable recovery of rare earth resources from spent NdFeB magnets has received considerable and increasing attention. However, the currently prevalent NdFeB magnets recovery techniques focus only on the recovery for rare earth elements (REEs), some of which also recover cobalt (Co) or boron (B). Herein, a simple mechanochemical strategy was proposed to recover REE, Co, and B from spent NdFeB magnets by mixing the NdFeB magnets powder and FeCl3 6H2O through the grinding-roasting-water leaching technological route. The results indicated high leaching efficiencies of 98.94 % for REEs, 99.99 % for Co, and 93.36 % for B from the NdFeB magnets. Additionally, iron remains in the leaching residue as iron oxide (96.73 wt %), achieving the complete separation of REEs, Co, B, and Fe. This mechanochemical based technology offers a green and efficient recovery process, facilitating more effective synergistic recovery of valuable elements from spent NdFeB magnets.

Mechanocatalytic Synthesis of Ammonia: State of the Catalyst During Reaction and Deactivation Pathway

Ammonia synthesis holds significant importance for both agricultural fertilizer production and emerging green energy applications. Here, we present a comprehensive characterization of a catalyst for mechanochemical ammonia synthesis, based on Cs-promoted Fe. The study sheds light on the catalyst's dynamic evolution under reaction conditions and the origin of deactivation. Initially, elemental Cs converts to CsH, followed by partial CsOH formation due to trace oxygen impurities on the surface of the Fe metal and the equipment. Concurrently, the mechanical milling process comminutes Fe, exposing fresh metallic Fe surfaces. This comminution correlates with an induction period observed during ammonia formation. Critical to the study, degradation of active Cs promoter species (CsH and CsNH2) into inactive CsOH emerged as the primary deactivation mechanism. By increasing the Cs content from 2.2 mol % to 4.2 mol %, we achieved stable, continuous ammonia synthesis for nearly 90 hours, showcasing one of the longest-running mechanocatalytic gas phase reactions. Studies of the temperature dependence of the reaction revealed negligible bulk temperature influence in the range of -10 °C to 100 °C, highlighting the dominance of mechanical action over bulk thermal effects. This study offers insights into the complex interplay between mechanical processing, reactive species, and deactivation mechanisms in mechanocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

Definitive Review of Nanobiochar

Nanobiochar is an advanced nanosized biochar with enhanced properties and wide applicability for a variety of modern-day applications. Nanobiochar can be developed easily from bulk biochar through top-down approaches including ball-milling, centrifugation, sonication, and hydrothermal synthesis. Nanobiochar can also be modified or engineered to obtain "engineered nanobiochar" or biochar nanocomposites with enhanced properties and applications. Nanobiochar provides many fold enhancements in surface area (0.4-97-times), pore size (0.1-5.3-times), total pore volume (0.5-48.5-times), and surface functionalities over bulk biochars. These enhancements have given increased contaminant sorption in both aqueous and soil media. Further, nanobiochar has also shown catalytic properties and applications in sensors, additive/fillers, targeted drug delivery, enzyme immobilization, polymer production, etc. The advantages and disadvantages of nanobiochar over bulk biochar are summarized herein, in detail. The processes and mechanisms involved in nanobiochar synthesis and contaminants sorption over nanobiochar are summarized. Finally, future directions and recommendations are suggested.

A New Look at the Mechanism of Cocrystal Formation and Coformers Exchange in Processes Forced by Mechanical and/or Thermal Stimuli - ex situ and in situ Studies of Low-Melting Eutectic Mixtures

Three different devices: ball mill, hot stage melting, and magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR rotor were used for the preparation of ethenzamide (ET) cocrystals with glutaric acid (GLU), ethylmalonic acid (EMA) and maleic acid (MAL) as coformers. In each case, well-defined binary systems (ET:EMA, ET:GLU, ET:MAL) were obtained. The common features of the two solvent free methods of cocrystal formation (grinding, melting) are presented on the basis of arguments obtained by solid state NMR spectroscopy. Thermal analysis (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) proved that the eutectic phase arises over a wide range of molar ratios of components for each of the binary systems. NMR techniques, supported by theoretical calculations, allowed to provide details about the pathway of the reaction mechanism with atomic accuracy. It was found that the formation of ET cocrystals is a complex process that requires five steps. Each step has been recognized and described. Variable temperature 1D and 2D MAS NMR experiments allowed to track physicochemical processes taking place in a molten state. Moreover, it was found that in a multicomponent mixture consisting of all four components, ET, EMA, GLU, and MAL, ET in the molten phase behaves as a specific selector choosing only one partner to form binary cocrystals according to energy preferences. The process of exchange of coformers in binary systems during grinding, melting, and NMR measurements is described. The stabilization energies (Estab ) and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps computed for the cocrystals under discussion and their individual components rationalize the selection rules and explain the relationships between individual species.

Investigation of Mechanochromic Luminescence of Pyrene-based Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens: Correlation between Molecular Packing and Luminescence Behavior

To better understand the correlation between molecular structure and optical properties such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) emission, two new pyrene-based derivatives with substitutions at the 4- and 5-positions (1HH) and at the 4-, 5-, 9-, and 10-positions (2HH) were designed and synthesized. Cyano groups were introduced at the periphery of the synthesized compounds (1HCN, 1OCN, 1BCN, 2HCN, 2OCN, and 2BCN) to investigate the influence of these groups on the emission properties of the pyrene derivatives both in solution and in the solid state. The fluorescence emission performance of these compounds in water/acetone mixtures was simultaneously studied, revealing outstanding aggregation-induced emission properties. The typical shift in emission maxima to higher values was attributed to J-aggregate formation in the aggregate state. Careful investigation of the crystal structures demonstrated abundant and intense intermolecular interactions, such as C-H…π and C-H…N hydrogen bonds, contributing to the remarkable mechanochromic luminescence performance of these compounds. The MCL properties of all the compounds were investigated using powder X-ray diffraction, and the remarkable mechanochromic properties were attributed to J-aggregate phenomena in the solid state. These results provide valuable insights into the structure-property relationship of organic MCL materials, guiding the design of efficient organic MCL materials.

Direct thermodynamic characterization of solid-state reactions by isothermal calorimetry

Despite the growing importance of solid-state reactions, their thermodynamic characterization has largely remained unexplored. This is in part due to the lack of methodology for measuring the heat effects related to reactions between solid reactants. We address here this gap and report on the first direct thermodynamic study of chemical reactions between solid reactants by isothermal calorimetry. Three reaction classes, cationic host-guest complex formation, molecular co-crystallization, and Baeyer-Villiger oxidation were investigated, showcasing the versatility of the devised methodology to provide detailed insight into the enthalpy changes related to various reactions. The reliability of the method was confirmed by correlation with the values obtained via solution calorimetry using Hess's law. The thermodynamic characterization of solid-state reactions described here will enable a deeper understanding of the factors governing solid-state processes.

The Origin of Delayed Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals Under Mechanochemical Conditions

We show that mechanochemically driven polymorphic transformations can require extremely long induction periods, which can be tuned from hours to days by changing ball milling energy. The robust design and interpretation of ball milling experiments must account for this unexpected kinetics that arises from energetic phenomena unique to the solid state. Detailed thermal analysis, combined with DFT simulations, indicates that these marked induction periods are associated with processes of mechanical activation. Correspondingly, we show that the pre-activation of reagents can also lead to marked changes in the length of induction periods. Our findings demonstrate a new dimension for exerting control over polymorphic transformations in organic crystals. We expect mechanical activation to have a much broader implication across organic solid-state mechanochemistry.

Opportunities and Challenges in Applying Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy in Organic Mechanochemistry

In recent years it is shown that mechanochemical strategies can be beneficial in directed conversions of organic compounds. Finding new reactions proved difficult, and due to the lack of mechanistic understanding of mechanochemical reaction events, respective efforts have mostly remained empirical. Spectroscopic techniques are crucial in shedding light on these questions. In this overview, the opportunities and challenges of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the field of organic mechanochemistry are discussed. After a brief discussion of the basics of high-resolution solid-state NMR under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions, seven opportunities for solid-state NMR in the field of organic mechanochemistry are presented, ranging from ex situ approaches to structurally elucidated reaction products obtained by milling to the potential and limitations of in situ solid-state NMR approaches. Particular strengths of solid-state NMR, for instance in differentiating polymorphs, in NMR-crystallographic structure-determination protocols, or in detecting weak noncovalent interactions in molecular-recognition events employing proton-detected solid-state NMR experiments at fast MAS frequencies, are discussed.

Illuminating milling mechanochemistry by tandem real-time fluorescence emission and Raman spectroscopy monitoring

In pursuit of accessible and interpretable methods for direct and real-time observation of mechanochemical reactions, we demonstrate a tandem spectroscopic method for monitoring of ball-milling transformations combining fluorescence emission and Raman spectroscopy, accompanied by high-level molecular and periodic density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, including periodic time-dependent (TD-DFT) modelling of solid-state fluorescence spectra. This proof-of-principle report presents this readily accessible dual-spectroscopy technique as capable of observing changes to the supramolecular structure of the model pharmaceutical system indometacin during mechanochemical polymorph transformation and cocrystallisation. The observed time-resolved in situ spectroscopic and kinetic data are supported by ex situ X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements. The application of first principles (ab initio) calculations enabled the elucidation of how changes in crystalline environment, that result from mechanochemical reactions, affect vibrational and electronic excited states of molecules. The herein explored interpretation of both real-time and ex situ spectroscopic data through ab initio calculations provides an entry into developing a detailed mechanistic understanding of mechanochemical milling processes and highlights the challenges of using real-time spectroscopy.

Mechanistic model for quantifying the effect of impact force on mechanochemical reactivity

Conventional mechanochemical synthetic tools, such as ball mills, offer no methodology to quantitatively link macroscale reaction parameters, such as shaking frequency or milling ball radius, to fundamental drivers of reactivity, namely the force vectors applied to the reactive molecules. As a result, although mechanochemistry has proven to be a valuable method to make a wide variety of products, the results are seldom reproduceable between reactors, difficult to rationally optimize, and hard to ascribe to a specific reaction pathway. Here we have developed a controlled force reactor, which is a mechanochemical ball mill reactor with integrated force measurement and control during each impact. We relate two macroscale reactor parameters-impact force and impact time-to thermodynamic and kinetic transition state theories of mechanochemistry utilizing continuum contact mechanics principles. We demonstrate force controlled particle fracture of NaCl to characterize particle size evolution during reactions, and force controlled reaction between anhydrous copper(II) chloride and (1, 10) phenanthroline. During the fracture of NaCl, we monitor the evolution of particle size as a function of impact force and find that particles quickly reach a particle size of ∼100 μm largely independent of impact force, and reach steady state 10-100× faster than reaction kinetics of typical mechanochemical reactions. We monitor the copper(II) chloride reactivity by measuring color change during reaction. Applying our transition state theory developed here to the reaction curves of copper(II) chloride and (1, 10) phenanthroline at multiple impact forces results in an activation energy barrier of 0.61 ± 0.07 eV, distinctly higher than barriers for hydrated metal salts and organic ligands and distinctly lower than the direct cleavage of the CuCl bond, indicating that the reaction may be mediated by the higher affinity of Fe in the stainless steel vessel to Cl. We further show that the results in the controlled force reactor match rudimentary estimations of impact force within a commercial ball mill reactor Retsch MM400. These results demonstrate the ability to quantitatively link macroscale reactor parameters to reaction properties, motivating further work to make mechanochemical synthesis quantitative, predictable, and fundamentally insightful.

Anionic ring-opening polymerization of functional epoxide monomers in the solid state

Despite recent advancements in mechanochemical polymerization, understanding the unique mechanochemical reactivity during the ball milling polymerization process still requires extensive investigations. Herein, solid-state anionic ring-opening polymerization is used to synthesize polyethers from various functional epoxide monomers. The critical parameters of the monomers are investigated to elucidate the unique reactivity of ball milling polymerization. The controllable syntheses of the desired polyethers are characterized via NMR, GPC, and MALDI-ToF analyses. Interestingly, bulky monomers exhibit faster conversions in the solid-state in clear contrast to that observed for solution polymerization. Particularly, a close linear correlation is observed between the conversion of the ball milling polymerization and melting point of the functional epoxide monomers, indicating melting point as a critical predictor of mechanochemical polymerization reactivity. This study provides insights into the efficient design and understanding of mechanochemical polymerization.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Stimuli Responsive Microgels

Mechanochemical approaches are widely used for the efficient, solvent-free synthesis of organic molecules, however their applicability to the synthesis of functional polymers has remained underexplored. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that mechanochemically triggered free-radical polymerization allows solvent- and initiator-free syntheses of structurally and morphologically well-defined complex functional macromolecular architectures, namely stimuliresponsive microgels. The developed mechanochemical polymerization approach is applicable to a variety of monomers and allows synthesizing microgels with tunable chemical structure, variable size, controlled number of crosslinks and reactive functional end-groups.

Mechanochemical debromination of allyl 2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (TBP-AE): optimization of the operational conditions

Allyl 2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (TBP-AE) is a flame retardant that is added to plastics to improve their fire resistance. This kind of additive is hazardous to both human health and the environment. As any other BFRs, TBP-AE resists photo-degradation in the environment and hence materials laden with TBP-AE are to be dibrominated to avoid environmental pollution. Mechanochemical degradation of TBP-AE is a promising approach with potential industrial applications since it does not require high temperatures nor it generates any secondary pollutants. A planetary ball milling simulation experiment was designed to study TBP-AE's mechanochemical debromination. To report products from the mechanochemical process, a variety of characterization techniques were used. The characterization methods included gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The effects of various co-milling reagent types, co-milling reagent concentrations with raw material, time, and revolution speed on mechanochemical debromination efficiency have been thoroughly investigated. The Fe/Al2O3 mixture entails the highest debromination efficiency of 23%. However, when using a Fe/Al2O3 mixture, neither the reagent concentration nor the revolution speed influenced the debromination efficiency. In case of using only Al2O3, the next viable reagent, it was revealed that while increasing the revolution, speed improved debromination efficiency to a certain point, and increasing it any further left the debromination efficiency unchanged. In addition, the results showed that an equal mass ratio of TBP-AE to Al2O3 promoted degradation more than an increase in the ratio of Al2O3 to TBP-AE. The addition of ABS polymer largely inhibits the reaction between Al2O3 and TBP-AE, which hindered alumina's ability to capture organic bromine, causing a significant decrease in the debromination efficiency when model of waste printed circuit board (WPCB) is considered.

Direct mechanocatalysis by resonant acoustic mixing (RAM)

We demonstrate the use of a metal surface to directly catalyse copper-catalysed alkyne-azide click-coupling (CuAAC) reactions under the conditions of Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) - a recently introduced and scalable mechanochemical methodology that uniquely eliminates the need for bulk solvent, as well as milling media. By using a simple copper coil as a catalyst, this work shows that direct mechanocatalysis can occur in an impact-free environment, relying solely on high-speed mixing of reagents against a metal surface, without the need for specially designed milling containers and media. By introducing an experimental setup that enables real-time Raman spectroscopy monitoring of RAM processes, we demonstrate 0th-order reaction kinetics for several selected CuAAC reactions, supporting surface-based catalysis. The herein presented RAM-based direct mechanocatalysis methodology is simple, enables the effective one-pot, two-step synthesis of triazoles via a combination of benzyl azide formation and CuAAC reactions on a wide scope of reagents, provides control over reaction stoichiometry that is herein shown to be superior to that seen in solution or by using more conventional CuCl catalyst, and is applied for simple gram-scale synthesis of the anticonvulsant drug Rufinamide.

Rationalizing the formation of porosity in mechanochemically-synthesized polymers

In this study, we present a matrix of 144 mechanochemically-synthesized polymers. All polymers were constructed by the solvent-free Friedel-Crafts polymerization approach, employing 16 aryl-containing monomers and 9 halide-containing linkers, which were processed in a high-speed ball mill. This Polymer Matrix was utilized to investigate the origin of porosity in Friedel-Crafts polymerizations in detail. By examining the physical state, molecular size, geometry, flexibility, and electronic structure of the utilized monomers and linkers, we identified the most important factors influencing the formation of porous polymers. We analyzed the significance of these factors for both monomers and linkers based on the yield and specific surface area of the generated polymers. Our in-depth evaluation serves as a benchmark study for future targeted design of porous polymers by the facile and sustainable concept of mechanochemistry.

Fast and Cost-Efficient 17 O-Isotopic Labeling of Carboxylic Groups in Biomolecules: From Free Amino Acids to Peptide Chains

¹⁷ O NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique, which can provide unique information regarding the structure and reactivity of biomolecules. However, the low natural abundance of ¹⁷ O (0.04 %) generally requires working with enriched samples, which are not easily accessible. Here, we present simple, fast and cost-efficient ¹⁷ O-enrichment strategies for amino acids and peptides by using mechanochemistry. First, five unprotected amino acids were enriched under ambient conditions, consuming only microliter amounts of costly labeled water, and producing pure molecules with enrichment levels up to ∼40 %, yields ∼60-85 %, and no loss of optical purity. Subsequently, ¹⁷ O-enriched Fmoc/tBu-protected amino acids were produced on a 1 g/day scale with high enrichment levels. Lastly, a site-selective ¹⁷ O-labeling of carboxylic functions in peptide side-chains was achieved for RGD and GRGDS peptides, with ∼28 % enrichment level. For all molecules, ¹⁷ O ssNMR spectra were recorded at 14.1 T in reasonable times, making this an important step forward for future NMR studies of biomolecules.

Mechanochemical effects underlying the mechanically activated catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide

In this work, we highlight and measure the intensity of mechanochemical effects at work in the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide by comparing the activity of a supported Co-Fe catalyst subjected, respectively, to ball milling and simple powder agitation. Paying due regard to the discontinuous nature of ball milling, we show that mechanochemical hydrogenation proceeds at significantly higher rate and disclose its connection with individual impacts. Experimental evidence suggests that the enhanced catalytic activity we observe can be ascribed to local processes affecting the amount of powder that gets involved in individual impacts.

Shaking Things from the Ground-Up: A Systematic Overview of the Mechanochemistry of Hard and High-Melting Inorganic Materials

We provide a systematic overview of the mechanochemical reactions of inorganic solids, notably simple binary compounds, such as oxides, nitrides, carbides, sulphides, phosphides, hydrides, borides, borane derivatives, and related systems. Whereas the solid state has been traditionally considered to be of little synthetic value by the broader community of synthetic chemists, the solid-state community, and in particular researchers focusing on the reactions of inorganic materials, have thrived in building a rich and dynamic research field based on mechanically-driven transformations of inorganic substances typically seen as inert and high-melting. This review provides an insight into the chemical richness of such mechanochemical reactions and, at the same time, offers their tentative categorisation based on transformation type, resulting in seven distinct groupings: (i) the formation of adducts, (ii) the reactions of dehydration; (iii) oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions; (iv) metathesis (or exchange) reactions; (v) doping and structural rearrangements, including reactions involving the reaction vessel (the milling jar); (vi) acid-base reactions, and (vii) other, mixed type reactions. At the same time, we offer a parallel description of inorganic mechanochemical reactions depending on the reaction conditions, as those that: (i) take place under mild conditions (e.g., manual grinding using a mortar and a pestle); (ii) proceed gradually under mechanical milling; (iii) are self-sustained and initiated by mechanical milling, i.e., mechanically induced self-propagating reactions (MSRs); and (iv) proceed only via harsh grinding and are a result of chemical reactivity under strongly non-equilibrium conditions. By elaborating on typical examples and general principles in the mechanochemistry of hard and high-melting substances, this review provides a suitable complement to the existing literature, focusing on the properties and mechanochemical reactions of inorganic solids, such as nanomaterials and catalysts.

Mechanoredox Catalysis Enables a Sustainable and Versatile Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization Process

The sustainable synthesis of macromolecules with control over sequence and molar mass remains a challenge in polymer chemistry. By coupling mechanochemistry and electron-transfer processes (i.e., mechanoredox catalysis), an energy-conscious controlled radical polymerization methodology is realized. This work explores an efficient mechanoredox reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization process using mechanical stimuli by implementing piezoelectric barium titanate and a diaryliodonium initiator with minimal solvent usage. This mechanoredox RAFT process demonstrates exquisite control over poly(meth)acrylate dispersity and chain length while also showcasing an alternative to the solution-state synthesis of semifluorinated polymers that typically utilize exotic solvents and/or reagents. This chemistry will find utility in the sustainable development of materials across the energy, biomedical, and engineering communities.

The mechanochemical excitation of crystalline LiN3

Mechanochemical reactions are driven by the direct absorption of mechanical energy by a solid (often crystalline) material. Understanding how this energy is absorbed and ultimately causes a chemical transformation is essential for understanding the elementary stages of mechanochemical transformations. Using as a model system the energetic material LiN₃ we here consider how vibrational energy flows through the crystal structure. By considering the compression response of the crystalline material we identify the partitioning of energy into an initial vibrational excitation. Subsequent energy flow is based on concepts of phonon-phonon scattering, which we calculate within a quasi-equilibrium model facilitated by phonon scattering data obtained from Density Functional Theory (DFT). Using this model we demonstrate how the moments (picoseconds) immediately following mechanical impact lead to significant thermal excitation of crystalline LiN₃, sufficient to drive marked changes in its electronic structure and hence chemical reactivity. This work paves the way towards an ab initio approach to studying elementary processes in mechanochemical reactions involving crystalline solids.

The "η-sweet-spot" (ηmax) in liquid-assisted mechanochemistry: polymorph control and the role of a liquid additive as either a catalyst or an inhibitor in resonant acoustic mixing (RAM)

Resonant acoustic mixing (RAM) offers a simple, efficient route for mechanochemical synthesis in the absence of milling media or bulk solvents. Here, we show the use of RAM to conduct the copper-catalysed coupling of sulfonamides and carbodiimides. This coupling was previously reported to take place only by mechanochemical ball milling, while in conventional solution environments it is not efficient, or does not take place at all. The results demonstrate RAM as a suitable methodology to conduct reactions previously accessed only by ball milling and provide a detailed, systematic overview of how the amount of liquid additive, measured by the ratio of liquid volume to weight of reactants (η, in μL mg^-1), can affect the course of a mechanochemical reaction and the polymorphic composition of its product. Switching from ball milling to RAM allowed for the discovery of a new polymorph of the model sulfonylguanidine obtained by catalytic coupling of di(cyclohexyl)carbodiimide (DCC) and p-toluenesulfonamide, and the ability to control reaction temperature in RAM enabled in situ control of the polymorphic behaviour of this nascent product. We show that the reaction conversion for a given reaction time does not change monotonically but, instead, achieves a maximum for a well-defined η-value. This "η-sweet-spot" of conversion is herein designated η_max. The herein explored reactions demonstrate sensitivity to η on the order of 0.01 μL mg^-1, which corresponds to an amount of liquid additive below 5 mol% compared to the reactants, and is at least one to two orders of magnitude lower than the η-value typically considered in the design of liquid-assisted ball milling mechanochemical reactions. Such sensitivity suggests that strategies to optimise liquid-assisted mechanochemical reactions should systematically evaluate η-values at increments of 0.01 μL mg^-1, or even finer. At η-values other than η_max the reaction conversion drops off, demonstrating that the same liquid additive can act either as a catalyst or an inhibitor of a mechanochemical reaction, depending on the amount.

Polymorphs and solid solutions: materials with new luminescent properties obtained through mechanochemical transformation of dicyanoaurate(I) salts

We report the use of mechano- and thermochemical methods to create new solid-state luminescent materials from well-known inorganic salts, potassium dicyanoaurate(I) KAu(CN)₂, and potassium dicyanocuprate(I) KCu(CN)₂. In particular, manual grinding or ball milling of commercial samples of KAu(CN)₂ led to the formation of a novel polymorph of the salt, herein termed m-KAu(CN)₂, evident by a significant change in color of the fluorescence emission of the solid material from orange to violet. The formation of m-KAu(CN)₂ is reversible upon addition of small amounts of solvents, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the structure of m-KAu(CN)₂ might be related to that of pristine KAu(CN)₂ through a change in ordering of Au(CN)₂^- ions in a layered structure. Thermal treatment of KAu(CN)₂ led to the discovery of another polymorph of this well-known salt, herein termed t-KAu(CN)₂, making KAu(CN)₂ a rare example of a system in which thermochemical and mechanochemical treatments lead to the formation of different, in each case previously not reported, polymorphic forms. The thermally-induced transformation from KAu(CN)₂ to t-KAu(CN)₂ takes place around 250 °C and proceeds in a crystal-to-crystal fashion, which enabled the preliminary structural characterisation through single crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the retention of the layered structure and a change in ordering of Au(CN)₂^- ions. Milling of the simple salt KAu(CN)₂ in the presence of equimolar amounts or less of its copper(I)-based analogue coordination polymer KCu(CN)₂ leads to the formation of a series of solid solution materials, isostructural to m-KAu(CN)₂ and with visible fluorescence emission distinct from KCu(CN)₂ or any herein investigated forms of KAu(CN)₂.

Mechanochemical solid-state vinyl polymerization with anionic initiator

Mechanochemistry has been extended to various polymer syntheses to achieve efficiency, greenness, and new products. However, many fundamental polymerization reactions have not been explored, although anionic polymerization of vinyl compounds has been pursued under mechanochemical conditions. Two solid monomers, 4-biphenyl methacrylate and 4-vinyl biphenyl, representing methacrylate and styrenic classes, respectively, were reacted with secondary butyl lithium under high-speed ball-milling. The alkyl-anion-promoted polymerization process was established by excluding radical initiation and producing the expected polymers with good efficiency. However, the generally expected features of anionic polymerization, such as molecular weight control and narrow dispersity, were not observed. Analysis of the milling parameters, reaction monitoring, and microstructural analysis revealed that the mechanism of the mechanochemical process differs from that of conventional anionic polymerizations. The mechanical force fractured the newly formed polymer chains via anionic initiation and generated macroradicals, which participated in the polymerization process. The anionic process governs the initiation step and the radical process becomes dominant during the propagation step.

Comparison of the Conventional and Mechanochemical Syntheses of Cyclodextrin Derivatives

Many scientists are working hard to find green alternatives to classical synthetic methods. Today, state-of-the-art ultrasonic and grinding techniques already drive the production of organic compounds on an industrial scale. The physicochemical and chemical behavior of cyclodextrins often differs from the typical properties of classic organic compounds and carbohydrates. The usually poor solubility and complexing properties of cyclodextrins can require special techniques. By eliminating or reducing the amount of solvent needed, green alternatives can reform classical synthetic methods, making them attractive for environmentally friendly production and the circular economy. The lack of energy-intensive synthetic and purification steps could transform currently inefficient processes into feasible methods. Mechanochemical reaction mechanisms are generally different from normal solution-chemistry mechanisms. The absence of a solvent and the presence of very high local temperatures for microseconds facilitate the synthesis of cyclodextrin derivatives that are impossible or difficult to produce under classical solution-chemistry conditions. Although mechanochemistry does not provide a general solution to all problems, several good examples show that this new technology can open up efficient synthetic pathways.

Highly Efficient Flexocatalysis of Two-Dimensional Semiconductors

Catalysis is vitally important for chemical engineering, energy, and environment. It is critical to discover new mechanisms for efficient catalysis. For piezoelectric/pyroelectric/ferroelectric materials that have a non-centrosymmetric structure, interfacial polarization-induced redox reactions at surfaces leads to advanced mechanocatalysis. Here, the first flexocatalysis for 2D centrosymmetric semiconductors, such as MnO₂  nanosheets, is demonstrated largely expanding the polarization-based-mechanocatalysis to 2D centrosymmetric materials. Under ultrasonic excitation, the reactive species are created due to the strain-gradient-induced flexoelectric polarization in MnO₂  nanosheets composed nanoflowers. The organic pollutants (Methylene Blue et al.) can be effectively degraded within 5 min; the performance of the flexocatalysis is comparable to that of state-of-the-art piezocatalysis, with excellent stability and reproducibility. Moreover, the factors related to flexocatalysis such as material morphology, adsorption, mechanical vibration intensity, and temperature are explored, which give deep insights into the mechanocatalysis. This study opens the field of flexoelectric effect-based mechanochemistry in 2D centrosymmetric semiconductors.

Advancing mechanochemical synthesis by combining milling with different energy sources

Owing to its efficiency and unique reactivity, mechanochemical processing of bulk solids has developed into a powerful tool for the synthesis and transformation of various classes of materials. Nevertheless, mechanochemistry is primarily based on simple techniques, such as milling in comminution devices. Recently, mechanochemical reactivity has started being combined with other energy sources commonly used in solution-based chemistry. Milling under controlled temperature, light irradiation, sound agitation or electrical impulses in newly developed experimental setups has led to reactions not achievable by conventional mechanochemical processing. This Perspective describes these unique reactivities and the advances in equipment tailored to synthetic mechanochemistry. These techniques - thermo-mechanochemistry, sono-mechanochemistry, electro-mechanochemistry and photo-mechanochemistry - represent a notable advance in modern mechanochemistry and herald a new level of solid-state reactivity: mechanochemistry 2.0.

From amines to (form)amides: a simple and successful mechanochemical approach

Two easily accessible routes for preparing an array of formylated and acetylated amines under mechanochemical conditions are presented. The two methodologies exhibit complementary features as they enable the derivatization of aliphatic and aromatic amines.

Controlling Nonlinear Dynamics of Milling Bodies in Mechanochemical Devices Driven by Pendular Forcing

Understanding the dynamics of milling bodies is key to optimize the mixing and the transfer of mechanical energy in mechanochemical processing. In this work, we present a comparative study of mechanochemical reactors driven by harmonic pendular forcing and characterized by different geometries of the lateral borders. We show that the shape of the reactor bases, either flat or curved, along with the size of the milling body and the elasticity of the collisions, represents relevant parameters that govern the dynamical regimes within the system and can control the transition from periodic to chaotic behaviors. We single out possible criteria to preserve target dynamical scenarios when the size of the milling body is changed, by adapting the relative extent of the spatial domain. This allows us to modulate the average energy of the collisions while maintaining the same dynamics and paves the way for a unifying framework to control the dynamical response in different experimental conditions. We finally explore the dynamical and energetic impact of an increasingly asymmetric mechanical force.

Mechanical Activation as a Method to Regulate Morphology, Texture and Surface Functional Composition of Carbon-Mineral Materials Derived from Sapropel

Data on the synthesis of carbon-mineral materials (CMM) through carbonization of native sapropel after preliminary mechanical activation (MA) in the air environment are presented. The effect of MA parameters (time, the size and acceleration of milling bodies) on the fractional composition and morphology of sapropel is investigated. MA for 5‒10 min promotes the dispersion of sapropel particles, while a further increase in treatment time causes their partial agglomeration. It is demonstrated that preliminary MA of native sapropel leads to changes in the texture parameters and acidity of the surface of CMM obtained after the carbonization stage. An increase in specific surface area from 90 to 560 m2g-1 is observed, with an increase in the adsorption pore volume from 0.16 to 0.52 cm3g-1 as a result of an increase in the fraction of micropores in the formed CMM. Despite this fact, CMM samples still contain large pores, and the fraction of meso- and macropores is 70%. In addition, a decrease in pH of the point of zero charge occurs as a consequence of an increase in the content of acidic oxygen-containing groups. The discovered effect is essential for the formation of sapropel-based materials with required properties and for broadening their application area.

Mechanochemical Enhancement of the Structural Stability of Pseudorotaxane Intermediates in the Synthesis of Rotaxanes

Mechanochemical syntheses of rotaxanes have attracted considerable attention of late because of the superior reaction rates and higher yields associated with their production compared with analogous reactions carried out in solution. Previous investigators, however, have focused on the demonstration of the mechanochemical syntheses of rotaxanes per se, rather than on studying the solid-phase host-guest molecular interplay related to their rapid formation and high yields. In this investigation, we attribute the lower yields of rotaxanes prepared in solution to the limited concentration and a desolvation energy penalty that must be compensated for by host-guest interactions during complexation that precedes the templation leading to rotaxane formation. It follows that, if the desolvation energy can be removed and higher concentrations can be attained, even weak host-guest interactions can drive the complexation of host and guest molecules efficiently. In order to test this hypothesis, we chose two host-guest pairs of permethylated pillar[5]arene/1,6-diaminohexane and permethylated pillar[5]arene/2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) for the simple reason that they exhibit extremely low binding constants (2.7 ± 0.4 M^-1 when 1,6-diaminohexane is the guest and <0.1 M^-1 when 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) is the guest in CDCl₃; i.e., ostensibly no pseudorotaxane formation is observed). We argue that the amount of pseudorotaxanes formed in the solid state is responsive to mechanical treatments or otherwise and changes in temperature during stoppering reactions. Compared to the amount of pseudorotaxanes that can be obtained in solution, large quantities of pseudorotaxanes are formed in the solid state because of concentration and desolvation effects. This mechanochemical enhancement of pseudorotaxane formation is referred to as a self-correction in the current investigation. Rotaxanes based on permethylated pillar[5]arene/1,6-diaminohexane and permethylated pillar[5]arene/2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) have been synthesized in much higher yields compared to those obtained in solution, aided and abetted by self-correction effects during mechanical treatments and heating at a mild temperature of 50 °C.

Adsorption and Desorption of Coal Gangue toward Available Phosphorus through Calcium-Modification with Different pH

The chemical reaction between calcium ions (Ca2+) and phosphate in the soil is the main way to maintain the availability of soil phosphorus. Thus, we believe stimulating coal gangue with Ca2+ solution would be an effective way to improve its adsorption and desorption capacity toward phosphate. In order to explore the effects of different pH of Ca2+ solution on the modified effect of coal gangue, we conducted mechanical grinding (<1 mm), high temperature calcination (800 °C), and the stimulation of Ca2+ solution with different pH (2, 7, 13), to prepare acidic calcium-modified coal gangue (Ac-CG) (Ac-CG, acidic calcium-modified coal gangue; Ne-CG, neutral calcium-modified coal gangue; Al-CG, alkali calcium-modified coal gangue; RCG, raw coal gangue), neutral calcium-modified coal gangue (Ne-CG), and alkali calcium-modified coal gangue (Al-CG); raw coal gangue (RCG) was regarded as the control. The results indicated that Al-CG had better phosphate adsorption (3.599 mg g−1); this favorable adsorption performance of Al-CG was related to the formation of hydrated calcium silicate gel and ettringite, which provided more Ca2+, Al3+, and hydroxyl groups, and a larger specific surface area (9.497 m2 g−1). Moreover, Al-CG not only held more phosphate but also maintained its availability longer for plants. It is suggested that stimulating coal gangue with Ca2+ solution under alkaline conditions is a perfect way to enhance its adsorption and desorption capacity toward phosphate; the Al-CG we prepared could be used as filling material and soil conditioner in the reclamation area.

Mechanochemical Conversion of Aromatic Amines to Aryl Trifluoromethyl Ethers

Increased interest in the trifluoromethoxy group in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry has induced a demand for new, selective, general, and faster methods applicable to natural products and highly functionalized compounds at a later stage of hit-to-lead campaigns. Applying pyrylium tetrafluoroborate, we have developed a mechanochemical protocol to selectively substitute the aromatic amino group with the OCF₃ functionality. The scope of our method includes 31 examples of ring-substituted anilines, including amides and sulfonamides. Expected S_NAr products were obtained in excellent yields. The presented concise method opens a pathway to new chemical spaces for the pharmaceutical industry.

Operando acoustic analysis: a valuable method for investigating reaction mechanisms in mechanochemistry

We present a new operando approach for following reactions taking place in mechanochemistry, relying on the analysis of the evolution of the sound during milling. We show that differences in sound can be directly correlated to (physico)chemical changes in the reactor, making this technique highly attractive and complementary to others for monitoring mechanochemical reactions. Most notably, it can provide unique information on the actual movements of the beads within the milling jars, which opens new avenues for helping rationalize mechanochemical processes.

Surface and Bulk Chemistry of Mechanochemically Synthesized Tohdite Nanoparticles

Aluminum oxides, oxyhydroxides, and hydroxides are important in different fields of application due to their many attractive properties. However, among these materials, tohdite (5Al2O3·H2O) is probably the least known because of the harsh conditions required for its synthesis. Herein, we report a straightforward methodology to synthesize tohdite nanopowders (particle diameter ∼13 nm, specific surface area ∼102 m2 g-1) via the mechanochemically induced dehydration of boehmite (γ-AlOOH). High tohdite content (about 80%) is achieved upon mild ball milling (400 rpm for 48 h in a planetary ball mill) without process control agents. The addition of AlF3 can promote the crystallization of tohdite by preventing the formation of the most stable α-Al2O3, resulting in the formation of almost phase-pure tohdite. The availability of easily accessible tohdite samples allowed comprehensive characterization by powder X-ray diffraction, total scattering analysis, solid-state NMR (1H and 27Al), N2-sorption, electron microscopy, and simultaneous thermal analysis (TG-DSC). Thermal stability evaluation of the samples combined with structural characterization evidenced a low-temperature transformation sequence: 5Al2O3·H2O → κ-Al2O3 → α-Al2O3. Surface characterization via DRIFTS, ATR-FTIR, D/H exchange experiments, pyridine-FTIR, and NH3-TPD provided further insights into the material properties.

Mechanochemical vs Wet Approach for Directing CO2 Capture toward Various Carbonate and Bicarbonate Networks

The distinct research areas related to CO₂ capture and mechanochemistry are both highly attractive in the context of green chemistry. However, merger of these two areas, i.e., mechanochemical CO₂ capture, is still in an early stage of development. Here, the application of biguanidine as an active species for CO₂ capture is investigated using both solution-based and liquid-assisted mechanochemical approaches, which lead to a variety of biguanidinium carbonate and bicarbonate hydrogen-bonded networks. We demonstrate that in solution, the formation of the carbonate vs bicarbonate networks can be directed by the organic solvent, while, remarkably, in the liquid-assisted mechanochemical synthesis employing the same solvents as additives, the selectivity in network formation is inversed. In general, our findings support the view of mechanochemistry not only as a sustainable alternative but rather as a complementary strategy to solution-based synthesis.
