Abstract
A new set of multi-donor [ferrocene (D) and methoxyphenyl (D')] conjugated D-D'-π-A based dyes [Fc-(OCH3-Ph)C[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CN-R{R[double bond, length as m-dash]COOH (1) and C6H4-COOH (2)}] were synthesized as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications. These dyes were characterized with the aid of analytical and spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, HR-Mass, and 1H and 13C NMR. The thermal stability of the dyes 1 and 2 were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and was found to be stable around 180 °C for dye 1 and 240 °C for dye 2. The electronic absorption spectra for sensitizers display major bands between 400 and 585 nm that could be ascribed to an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between the electron donor and acceptor to create an efficient charge separation. The redox behaviour of the dyes was determined by cyclic voltammetry, which revealed the one-electron transfer from the ferrocene to ferrocenium ion (Fe2+ ⇌ Fe3+), and potential was utilized to determine the band gap of the dyes (2.16 eV for 1 and 2.12 eV for 2). Further, the carboxylic anchor dyes 1 and 2 have been utilized as photosensitizers in TiO2-based DSSCs with and without co-adsorbance of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), and the photovoltaic performances were studied. The obtained photovoltaic parameters of dye 2 are open-circuit voltage (V oc) = 0.428 V, short-circuit current density (J sc) = 0.086 mA cm-2, the fill factor (FF) = 0.432 and the energy efficiencies (η) = 0.015%, the overall power conversion efficiencies were found to be increased in the presence of CDCA as a co-adsorbent. The photosensitizers with the addition of CDCA show higher efficiencies compared to those in the absence of CDCA, which can prevent the formation of aggregation and increased electron injection of the dyes. Among the dyes, the 4-(cyanomethyl) benzoic acid (2) anchor showed higher photovoltaic performance compared with the cyanoacrylic acid (1) anchor due to the introduction of additional π-linkers and acceptor unit, which enables the lowering of the energy barrier and charge recombination process. In addition, the experimentally observed HOMO and LUMO values were in good agreement with the theoretical calculation by the DFT-B3LYP/6-31+G**/LanL2TZf level of theory.

Abstract
Four new functionalized Ni(II) dithiocarbamate complexes of the formula [Ni(Lx)2] (1-4) (L1 = N-methylthiophene-N-3-pyridylmethyl dithiocarbamate, L2 = N-methylthiophene-N-4-pyridylmethyl dithiocarbamate, L3 = N-benzyl-N-3-pyridylmethyl dithiocarbamate, and L4 = N-benzyl-N-4-pyridylmethyl dithiocarbamate) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-vis, and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopic techniques. The solid-state structure of complex 1 has also been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed a monomeric centrosymmetric structure for complex 1 in which two dithiocarbamate ligands are bonded to the Ni(II) metal ion in a S^S chelating mode resulting in a square planar geometry around the nickel center. These complexes are immobilized on activated carbon cloth (CC) and their electrocatalytic performances for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been investigated in aqueous alkaline solution. All the complexes act as pre-catalysts for the OER and undergo electrochemical anodic activation to form Ni(O)OH active catalysts. Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization revealed the existence of the interface of molecular complex/Ni(O)OH, which acts as the real catalyst for the OER. The active catalyst obtained from complex 2 showed the best OER activity achieving 10 mA cm-2 current density at an overpotential of 330 mV in 1.0 M aqueous KOH solution.

Abstract
A square-planar [CuIIL] complex 1, based on the redox-active phenalenyl unit LH2 = 9,9'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(1H-phenalen-1-one), is prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 crystallizes at room temperature with the P1 space group. The molecular structure of 1 reveals the presence of intriguing C-H···Cu intermolecular anagostic interactions of the order ∼2.7715 Å. Utilizing the presence of anagostic interactions and the free nonbonding molecular orbitals (NBMOs) of the closed-shell phenalenyl unit in 1, the oxidation reactions of some industrially important polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the presence of the [CuIIL] complex under very mild conditions have been reported. The direct conversion of anthracene-9-carbaldehyde to 9,10-anthraquinone in one step concludes that the catalyst shows dual activity in the chemical transformations. This also includes the first report of a "single-step" catalytic transformation of pyrene-1-carbaldehyde to the synthetically difficult pyren-4-ol, a precursor for the synthesis of several novel fluorescent probes for cell imaging.

Abstract
The use of renewable energy is essential for the future of the Earth, and solar photons are the ultimate source of energy to satisfy the ever-increasing global energy demands. Photoconversion using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is becoming an established technology to contribute to the sustainable energy market, and among state-of-the art DSCs are those which rely on ruthenium(ii) sensitizers and the triiodide/iodide (I3 -/I-) redox mediator. Ruthenium is a critical raw material, and in this review, we focus on the use of coordination complexes of the more abundant first row d-block metals, in particular copper, iron and zinc, as dyes in DSCs. A major challenge in these DSCs is an enhancement of their photoconversion efficiencies (PCEs) which currently lag significantly behind those containing ruthenium-based dyes. The redox mediator in a DSC is responsible for regenerating the ground state of the dye. Although the I3 -/I- couple has become an established redox shuttle, it has disadvantages: its redox potential limits the values of the open-circuit voltage (V OC) in the DSC and its use creates a corrosive chemical environment within the DSC which impacts upon the long-term stability of the cells. First row d-block metal coordination compounds, especially those containing cobalt, and copper, have come to the fore in the development of alternative redox mediators and we detail the progress in this field over the last decade, with particular attention to Cu2+/Cu+ redox mediators which, when coupled with appropriate dyes, have achieved V OC values in excess of 1000 mV. We also draw attention to aspects of the recyclability of DSCs.

Abstract
Dye sensitized solar cells represent promising alternative photovoltaic (PV) technologies with the advantages of low material cost, ease of production and high performance for indoor applications. Solid state DSCs (ssDSCs) have been developed to greatly diminish the problems of electrolyte leakage and electrode corrosion. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCEs) of ssDSCs generally was much lower than traditional liquid DSCs, resulting in low conductivity and poor pore infiltration of solid HTMs in mesoporous structures. To overcome these problems, in-situ photoelectrochemical polymerization (PEP) approach is developed to synthesize polymer HTMs in the porous electrodes, enabling enhancement of pore infiltration fraction and conductivity. The PEP method offers great opportunities for engineering the HTM interfaces, tuning the charge dynamics and improving the photovoltaic performance of ssDSCs. Here we aim to present a coherent review of the recent development of material engineering and interfacial optimization for ssDSCs. We also summarize the recent advances in the PEP, with special emphasis on how the influencing factors control the PEP kinetics, the polymer properties as well as the device performance. This review provides a deep understanding of the mechanism of photopolymerization across different conditions, which serves as a guidebook for further optimization of the PEP process for ssDSCs. Abstract
Pb(II) complexes of bis(N-1,4-phenyl-N-(4-morpholinedithiocarbamato)) as Pb(II)-S and bis(N-diisopropyl-N-octyldithiocarbamato) as Pb(II)-P were prepared and characterized by optical, structural, morphological, and electrochemical techniques. The scanning electron microscopy analysis of Pb(II)-P and Pb(II)-S complexes consists of cubic crystals. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy spectral studies revealed that the diameter increases in length for alkyl chain groups. This study demonstrates that the cubic shape of Pb(II) complexes can be synthesized from aromatic and aliphatic dithiocarbamate ligands. Photoluminescence analysis of both complexes fell within the blue shift region. The CV curve for Pb(II)-S revealed redox curves and the box-like shape as an indicative of a capacitive behavior, signifying limited catalytic redox activity. The J-V results for both sensitizers displayed satisfactory conversion efficiency (% η) between 3.77 and 3.96%.

Abstract
Copper dithiocarbamate complexes have been known for ca. 120 years and find relevance in biology and medicine, especially as anticancer agents and applications in materials science as a single-source precursor (SSPs) to nanoscale copper sulfides. Dithiocarbamates support Cu(I), Cu(II) and Cu(III) and show a rich and diverse coordination chemistry. Homoleptic [Cu(S2CNR2)2] are most common, being known for hundreds of substituents. All contain a Cu(II) centre, being either monomeric (distorted square planar) or dimeric (distorted trigonal bipyramidal) in the solid state, the latter being held together by intermolecular C···S interactions. Their d9 electronic configuration renders them paramagnetic and thus readily detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Reaction with a range of oxidants affords d8 Cu(III) complexes, [Cu(S2CNR2)2][X], in which copper remains in a square-planar geometry, but Cu–S bonds shorten by ca. 0.1 Å. These show a wide range of different structural motifs in the solid-state, varying with changes in anion and dithiocarbamate substituents. Cu(I) complexes, [Cu(S2CNR2)2]−, are (briefly) accessible in an electrochemical cell, and the only stable example is recently reported [Cu(S2CNH2)2][NH4]·H2O. Others readily lose a dithiocarbamate and the d10 centres can either be trapped with other coordinating ligands, especially phosphines, or form clusters with tetrahedral [Cu(μ3-S2CNR2)]4 being most common. Over the past decade, a wide range of Cu(I) dithiocarbamate clusters have been prepared and structurally characterised with nuclearities of 3–28, especially exciting being those with interstitial hydride and/or acetylide co-ligands. A range of mixed-valence Cu(I)–Cu(II) and Cu(II)–Cu(III) complexes are known, many of which show novel physical properties, and one Cu(I)–Cu(II)–Cu(III) species has been reported. Copper dithiocarbamates have been widely used as SSPs to nanoscale copper sulfides, allowing control over the phase, particle size and morphology of nanomaterials, and thus giving access to materials with tuneable physical properties. The identification of copper in a range of neurological diseases and the use of disulfiram as a drug for over 50 years makes understanding of the biological formation and action of [Cu(S2CNEt2)2] especially important. Furthermore, the finding that it and related Cu(II) dithiocarbamates are active anticancer agents has pushed them to the fore in studies of metal-based biomedicines.

Abstract
Four new mononuclear/coordination polymeric (CP) zinc(II) complexes (1-4) of ferrocenyl/pyridyl-functionalized dithiocarbamate ligands, N-ferrocenylmethyl-N-butyl dithiocarbamate (L1), N-ferrocenylmethyl-N-ethylmorpholine dithiocarbamate (L2), N-ferrocenylmethyl-N-2-(diethylamino)ethylamine dithiocarbamate (L3), and N-4-methoxybenzyl-N-3-methylpyridyl dithiocarbamate (L4), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-vis, and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopic techniques. The solid-state structures of complexes 1, 3, and 4 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography as well as powder X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed a monomeric structure for complex 1 but 1D polymeric structures for complexes 3 and 4. In all complexes, dithiocarbamate ligands are bonded to the Zn(II) metal ion in a S^S chelating mode, and in the CPs, N atoms on the 2-(diethylamino)ethylamine and 3-pyridyl functionalities in the ligands on the neighboring molecules are also bonded to metal centers, leading to the formation of either a discrete tetrahedral molecule in 1 or 1D CP structures in 3 and 4. The Zn(II) metal centers in the polymeric structures exhibited either square-pyramidal or octahedral geometries. The supramolecular structures in these complexes are sustained via C-H···π (ZnCS2, chelate; 3 and 4), C-H···π, and H···H interactions. The catalytic performances of complexes have also been assessed in the Knoevenagel condensation and one-pot multicomponent reactions. Catalysis results showed that the CP 3 acts as a heterogeneous bifunctional catalyst with excellent transformation efficiency at low catalyst loading.

Abstract
Detailed theoretical studies of Ni(II) complexes in a distorted square planar form and containing dithio and (P, P) chelating ligands were performed. These Ni(II) complexes are investigated for their use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Structures and UV–vis spectra are calculated at density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) theories using B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP functionals and 6-31G(d,p) and 6-31G+(d) basis sets. Geometry optimizations result in excellent agreement with the experimental results. Moreover, the analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) allowed a detailed assignment and a clear analysis of the electronic transitions. The TD-DFT calculations reproduce the main spectroscopic properties observed and substituent effects. The results reveal that all absorption spectra are characterized by mixed character mainly dominated by metal to ligand and ligand to ligand charge transfers (MLCT and LLCT). We unveil how the substituent variations affect the DSSCs features of the complexes.

Abstract
Four new heteroleptic Ni(ii) complexes with general formula [Ni(ii)(LL')] (L = 2-(methylene-1,1'-dithiolato)-5-phenylcyclohexane-1,3-dione (L1) and 2-(methylene-1,1'-dithiolato)-5,5'-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione (L2); L' = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) and bis(diphenylphosphino)monosulphide methane (dppms) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopy (IR, UV-Vis, 1H, 13C{1H} and 31P{1H} NMR). All complexes 1-4 have also been characterized by PXRD and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The solid state molecular structures revealed distorted square planar geometry about the four-coordinate Ni(ii) metal centre together with rare NiH-C intra/intermolecular anagostic interactions in axial positions. In these complexes supramolecular structures have been sustained by non-covalent C-HO, C-OH-O, C-Hπ, C-Hπ (NiCS2, chelate), ππ and HH interactions. Their electrocatalytic properties have been investigated for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in which complex 2 showed the highest activity with 10 mA cm-2 at the potential of 1.58 V vs. RHE. In addition, complex 2 also exhibits an OER onset potential at 1.52 V vs. RHE.
