Abstract
Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are gaining much attention in nanoscale materials research because they exhibit size-specific physicochemical properties that are not observed in the corresponding bulk metals. Among them, silver (Ag) NCs can be precisely synthesized not only as pure Ag NCs but also as anion-templated Ag NCs. For anion-templated Ag NCs, we can expect the following capabilities: 1) size and shape control by regulating the central anion (anion template); 2) stabilization by adjusting the charge interaction between the central anion and surrounding Ag atoms; and 3) functionalization by selecting the type of central anion. In this review, we summarize the synthesis methods and influences of the central anion on the geometric structure of anion-templated Ag NCs, which include halide ions, chalcogenide ions, oxoanions, polyoxometalate, or hydride/deuteride as the central anion. This summary provides a reference for the current state of anion-templated Ag NCs, which may promote the development of anion-templated Ag NCs with novel geometric structures and physicochemical properties.

Abstract
Owing to the quantized size and associated discrete energy levels, atomically precise silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) hold great potential for designing functional luminescent materials. However, the thermally activated non-radiative transition of Ag(I)-based NCs has faded the opportunities. To acquire the structurally rigid architecture of cluster nodes for constraining such transitions, a new synthetic approach is unveiled here that utilizes a neutral template as a cluster-directing agent to assemble twenty Ag(I) atoms that ensure the maximum number of surface-protecting ligand attachment possibilities in a particular solvent medium. The solvent polarity triggers the precise structural design to circumvent the over-reliance of the templates, which results in the formation of [CO2@Ag20(SAdm)10(CF3COO)10(DMA)2] NC (where SAdm = 1-adamantanethiolate and DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) exhibiting an unprecedented room-temperature photoluminescence emission. The high quantum yield of the generated blue emission ensures its candidature as an ideal donor for artificial light-harvesting system design, and it is utilized with the two-step sequential energy transfer process, which finally results in the generation of ideal white light. For implementing perfect white light emission, the required chromophores in the green and red emission regions were chosen based on their effective spectral overlap with the donor components. Due to their favorable energy-level distribution, excited state energy transfers occurred from the NC to β-carotene at the initial step, then from the conjugate of the NC and β-carotene to another chromophore, Nile Blue, at the second step via a sequential Förster resonance energy transfer pathway.

Abstract
The synthesis of nanoclusters from simple structural units is usually a challenging process because of the complexity and unpredictability of the self-assembly process of these types of compounds. Herein, two new neutral 19-nuclearity silver nanoclusters based on alkynyl ligands with the formulas [(CrO4)@Ag19(C≡CtBu)8(Ph2PO2)6(tfa)3(CH3OH)2] (1) and [(SO4)@Ag19(C≡CtBu)8(Ph2PO2)6(tfa)3(CH3OH)2] (2), in which tfa = trifluoroacetate, were synthesized, and their structures were investigated by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, elemental analyses, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface ligands of Ph2PO2H and trifluoroacetate were assembled through hydrogen bonding, metal-aromatic interactions, and coordination bonding around 19 silver atoms as the metal skeletons of the nanoclusters. Sulfate and chromate anions, as a template within the metal skeleton of clusters through bonding with silver atoms, stabilized the structure. In addition, the UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, luminescence properties, and thermal stability of the nanoclusters were investigated.

Abstract
To acquire the atomic design of new functional Ag(i) nanoclusters (NCs), a new synthetic approach of site-specific alloying has been unveiled, by which the neutral CO2 templated Ag20 core is confined through Cu containing two peripheral motif units. The impact of surface charge, size and shape of the template on the self-assembly of Ag(i) has been precisely controlled here for the first time and as a result, a similar pentagonal gyrobicupola-like Ag20 core is formed while varying the templates (S2-, CO3 2- and CO2). However, the surface charge generated on the Ag(i) core due to the presence of a neutral template opens up the possibility of this novel alloying process. The introduction of strongly interacted peripheral motif units (DMA-CuS-) on the Ag20 core enforces more rigidity in the skeleton that reduces the probability of non-radiative transition in the excited state by lowering the intramolecular vibration. In addition to this, the incorporation of electron-donating peripheral motif units modulates the frontier molecular arrangement that helps in attaining the synergy which would ultimately turn on the room-temperature emission properties. The electron-donating effect of the peripheral motif units further leads to a sharp reduction of the bandgap and the symmetric position of the heterometal in the cluster minimizes the intercluster distances which further influences the intercluster charge carrier transport. So, the precise structure-property correlation with this novel synthetic approach will pave the way for a well-functioning NC design.

Abstract
Designing an artificial light-harvesting system (LHS) with high energy transfer efficiency has been a challenging task. Herein, we report an atom-precise silver nanocluster (Ag NC) as a unique platform to fabricate the artificial LHS. A facile one-pot synthesis of [Cl@Ag16S(S-Adm)8(CF3COO)5(DMF)3(H2O)2]·DMF (Ag16) NC by using a bulky adamantanethiolate ligand is portrayed here which, in turn, alleviates the issues related to the smaller NC core designed from a highly steric environment. The surface molecular motion of this NC extends the non-radiative relaxation rate which is strategically restricted by a recognition site-specific supramolecular adduct with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) that results in the generation of a blue emission. This emission property is further controlled by the number of attached β-CD which eventually imposes more rigidity. The higher emission quantum yield and the larger emission lifetime relative to the lesser numbered β-CD conjugation signify Ag16 ∩ β-CD2 as a good LHS donor component. In the presence of an organic dye (β-carotene) as an energy acceptor, an LHS is fabricated here via the Förster resonance energy transfer pathway. The opposite charges on the surfaces and the matched electronic energy distribution result in a 93% energy transfer efficiency with a great antenna effect from the UV-to-visible region. Finally, the harvested energy is utilized successfully for efficient photocurrent generation with much-enhanced yields compared to the individual components. This fundamental investigation into highly-efficient energy transfer through atom-precise NC-based systems will inspire additional opportunities for designing new LHSs in the near future.

Abstract
Screening of AgNO3/AgStBu solutions in DMF, DMSO and NMP resulted in the isolation of three novel nanosized silver/thiolate complexes with a torus-like {Ag20(StBu)10} core. The structures of [NO3@Ag20(StBu)10(NO3)9(DMF)6] (1) and [NO3@Ag20(tBuS)10(NO3)8(NMP)8][NO3@Ag19(tBuS)10(NO3)8(NMP)6]2(NO3) (2) were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The self-assembly process leading to 1 can be switched to a different outcome using Br-, resulting in [Br@Ag16(StBu)8(NO3)5(DMF)3](NO3)2 (3), which is the one of the few genuine host-guest complexes in the silver/thiolate systems. Solutions of the individual complexes in CH3CN were studied by HR-ESI-MS techniques, which revealed a dynamic behavior for each complex, driven by a redistribution of the {AgNO3} units. This dynamics results in the appearance of both cationic and anionic species, based on unchanged silver-thiolate cores. Daylight causes degradation of 3 with the formation of a composite material based on defective orthorhombic Ag2S with a porous morphology, as observed using the SEM technique. The electrocatalytic HER activity of such a material was studied.

Abstract
Three new coordination polymers, [Cu2(CN)(L)(OCH3)]·CH3OH·3H2O (1), [Cu3(Br)3(L)] (2) and [Cu(I)(L)]·1.5H2O (3), have been solvothermally prepared by reacting L (5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetra[(3-pyridylmethyl)oxy]-2,8,14,20-tetrathiacalix[4]arene) with Cu(i) halide. 1 and 2 exhibit layers. 3 displays a chain, a supramolecular layer constructed by hydrogen bonds. The performance of 1-3 was examined as heterogeneous catalysts for azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions. Most strikingly, 1 and 2 show predominant efficiency with high regioselectivity and excellent recyclability. Remarkably, solids 1-3 all have luminescence characteristics under irradiation with a UV lamp.

Abstract
Most of polyoxometallates (POMs) templated silver nanoclusters recorded so far are polyoxomolybdates and polyoxotungstates; however, as congeneric polyoxochromates, they are rarely observed in silver nanoclusters. Herein, a high-nuclearity polyoxochromate, (CrIII4CrVI8O36)12-, is uncovered in a novel silver nanocluster (SD/Ag56a) as an anion template. The mixed-valent (CrIII4CrVI8O36)12- consists of four edge-sharing CrIIIO6 octahedra and eight CrVIO4 tetrahedra, which are fused together by sharing one or two vertexes. The (CrIII4CrVI8O36)12- is the by far highest nuclearity polyoxochromate and is trapped by outer Ag56 bracelet-like shell coprotected by quaternary ligands including iPrS-, NapCOO- (2-naphthalenecarboxylate), CF3COO-, and CH3CN. The antiferromagnetic property and solution behavior of SD/Ag56a are discussed in detail.

Abstract
Hierarchical nano structures are hard to fabircate. Here, we present three novel hierarchical multi-shell 66-nuclei silver nanoclusters, trapping ultrasmall Ag64+ nano-fragments by nine MoO42- ions. This Ag6@(MoO4)9 core is further wrapped by an outer Ag60 shell. The Ag6 kernel evolves from reduction involving DMF solvent. Carboxylate ligands are very important in the modulation of the polygon patterns on the Ag60 shell.

Abstract
High-nuclearity silver clusters are appealing synthetic targets for their remarkable structures, but most are isolated serendipitously. We report here six giant silver-thiolate clusters mediated by solvents, which not only dictate the formation of an octahedral Ag64+ kernel, but also influence the in situ-generated Mo-based anion templates. The typical sevenfold symmetric silver nanowheels show a hierarchical cluster-in-cluster structure that comprises an outermost Ag56 shell and an inner Ag64+ kernel in the centre with seven MoO42- anion templates around it. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analyses reveal the underlying rule for the formation of such unique silver nanowheels. This work establishes a solvent-intervention approach to construct high-nuclearity silver clusters in which both the formation of octahedral Ag64+ kernel and in situ generation of various Mo-based anion templates can be simultaneously controlled.

Abstract
Sulfonates were incorporated into six novel high-nuclearity silver(I) thiolate clusters under the guidance of anion templates varied from S2- , SO42- , α-[Mo5 O18 ]6- , β-[Mo5 O18 ]6- , [Mo2 O8 ]4- , to [Mo4 O14 (SO4 )]6- . Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that SD/Ag1, SD/Ag3, SD/Ag5, and SD/Ag6 are discrete [S@Ag60 ], [α-Mo5 O18 @Ag36 ], [Mo2 O8 @Ag30 ]2 , and [Mo4 O14 (SO4 )@Ag73 ] clusters, respectively, whereas SD/Ag2 and SD/Ag4 are one-dimensional (1D) chains based on the [SO4 @Ag20 ] and [β-Mo5 O18 @Ag36 ] cluster subunits, respectively. Their silver skeletons are protected exteriorly by thiolates and sulfonates and interiorly supported by diverse anions as templates. Structurally, cluster SD/Ag1 is a typical core-shell structure comprised of an inner Ag12 cuboctahedron and an outer Ag48 shell. The sulfate-templated drum-like Ag20 cluster subunits are bridged by PhSO3- to give a 1D chain of SD/Ag2. Complex SD/Ag3 and SD/Ag4 are spindle-like Ag36 clusters with isomeric [Mo5 O18 ]6- inside, and the latter is further extended to a 1D chain through PhSO3- bridges. A pair of [Mo2 O8 ]4- templated gourd-like Ag30 clusters are dimerized in a head-to-head fashion to form SD/Ag5. Complex SD/Ag6 is the largest cluster in this family and doubly templated by unprecedented [Mo4 O14 (SO4 )]6- anions. Geometrically, the silver shells of SD/Ag1-SD/Ag5 show the polyhedral features of Johnson solids, instead of the usual Platonic or Archimedean solids. Solution behaviors and luminescent properties were also investigated in detail.

Abstract
Noble metal nanoclusters have attracted great attentions in the area of fluorescence related applications due to their special properties such as low toxicity, excellent photostability and bio-compatibility. However, they still describe disadvantages for low quantum yield compared to quantum dots and organic dyes though the brightness of the fluorescence play an important role for the efficiency of the applications. Attentions have been attracted for exploring strategies to enhance the fluorescence based on the optical fundamentals through various protocols. Some methods have already been successfully proposed for obtaining relative highly fluorescent nanoclusters, which will potentially describe advantages for the application. In this review, we summarize the approach for enhancement of the fluorescence of the nanoclusters based on the modification of the properties, improvement of the synthesis process and optimization of the environment. The limitation and directions for future development of the fabrication of highly fluorescent metal nanoclusters are demonstrated.

Abstract
Decoding the principles of cluster-based framework assembly at the molecular level remains a persistent challenge. Herein, we isolated and characterized a novel water-stable three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic open framework [Cl@Ag14(cPrC≡C)10Cl2·(p-TOS)·1/3H2O]n (SD/Ag14, cPrC≡CH = cyclopropylacetylene; p-TOS = p-toluenesulfonate), which contains a chloride-templated Ag14 cluster as building block. For SD/Ag14, one chloride acts as the template to shape the Ag14 cluster and the other bridges the clusters to a 3D pcu-h open framework. As revealed by high resolution electrospray mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS), the Ag12-Ag14 species are potential cluster-based intermediates to the 3D pcu-h framework, which authenticates a preconceived idea that the 3D framework is hierarchically assembled from the silver clusters as observed in solid state. Interestingly, SD/Ag14 can be used effectively to remove the environmental pollutant Cr2O72- from wastewater through anion exchange in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation fashion. Furthermore, SD/Ag14 exhibits excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, thus making it a potential antibacterial agent.

Abstract
Metal clusters have been very attractive due to their aesthetic structures and fascinating properties. Different from nanoparticles, each cluster of a macroscopic sample has a well-defined structure with identical composition, size, and shape. As the disadvantages of polydispersity are ruled out, informative structure-property relationships of metal clusters can be established. The formation of a high-nuclearity metal cluster involves the organization of metal ions into a complex entity in an ordered way. To achieve controllable preparation of metal clusters, it is helpful to introduce a directing agent in the formation process of a cluster. To this end, anion templates have been used to direct the formation of high nuclearity clusters. In this Account, the role of anions played in the formation of a variety of silver clusters has been reviewed. Silver ions are positively charged, so anionic species could be utilized to control the formation of silver clusters on the basis of electrostatic interactions, and the size and shape of the resulted clusters can be dictated by the templating anions. In addition, since the anion is an integral component in the silver clusters described, the physical properties of the clusters can be modulated by functional anions. The templating effects of simple inorganic anions and polyoxometales are shown in silver alkynyl clusters and silver thiolate clusters. Intercluster compounds are also described regarding the importance of anions in determining the packing of the ion pairs and making contribution to electron communications between the positive and negative counterparts. The role of the anions is threefold: (a) an anion is advantageous in stabilizing a cluster via balancing local positive charges of the metal cations; (b) an anion template could help control the size and shape of a cluster product; (c) an anion can be a key factor in influencing the function of a cluster through bringing in its intrinsic properties. Properties including electron communication, luminescent thermochromism, single-molecule magnet, and intercluster charge transfer associated with anion-directed silver clusters have been discussed. We intend to attract chemists' attention to the role that anions could play in determining the structures and properties of metal complexes, especially clusters. We hope that this Account will stimulate more efforts in exploiting new role of anions in various metal cluster systems. Anions can do much more than counterions for charge balance, and they should be considered in the design and synthesis of cluster-based functional materials.

Abstract
The spontaneous formation of discrete spherical nanosized molecules is prevalent in nature, but the authentic structural mimicry of such highly symmetric polyhedra from edge sharing of regular polygons has remained elusive. Here we present a novel ball-shaped {(HNEt3)[Ag37S4(SC6H4(t)Bu)24(CF3COO)6(H2O)12]} cluster () that is assembled via a one-pot process from polymeric {(HNEt3)2[Ag10(SC6H4(t)Bu)12]}n and CF3COOAg. Single crystal X-ray analysis confirmed that is a Td symmetric spherical molecule with a [Ag36(SC6H4(t)Bu)24] anion shell enwrapping a AgS4 tetrahedron. The shell topology of belongs to one of 13 Archimedean solids, a truncated tetrahedron with four edge-shared hexagons and trigons, which are supported by a AgS4 Platonic solid in the core. Interestingly, the cluster emits green luminescence centered at 515 nm at room temperature. Our investigations have provided a promising synthetic protocol for a high-nuclearity silver cluster based on underlying geometrical principles.

Abstract
A polyoxometalate-templated silver thiolate nanocluster, [Ag62(S(t)Bu)40(Mo20O66)(Mo6O19)3(CH3CN)2]·(CF3SO3)4 (1), has been isolated, in which a giant peanut-like silver(i)-thiolate cluster [Ag62(S(t)Bu)40](22+) encapsulates an unprecedented [Mo20O66](12-) polyoxoanion core. It opens a new approach for the synthesis of both elusive polyoxometalates and high-nuclearity silver(i)-thiolate nanoclusters.
