High-Speed Schlieren Imaging of Vapor Formation in Electrospray Plume

Previous mechanistic descriptions of electrosprays mostly focused on the dynamics of Taylor cones, initial droplets, and progeny droplets. However, vapor formation during droplet desolvation in an electrospray plume has not been discussed to a great extent. Here, we implement a double-pass on-axis schlieren high-speed imaging system to observe generation and propagation of vapors in an offline electrospray source under different conditions. Switching between turbulent and laminar vapor flow was observed for all of the scanned conditions, which may be attributed to randomly occurring disturbances in the sample flow inside the electrospray emitter. Calculation of mean vapor flow velocity and analysis of vapor flow patterns were performed using in-house developed image processing programs. Experiments performed at different electrospray voltages (0-6 kV), solvent flow rates (100-600 μL min-1), and methanol concentrations (50-100%), indicate only a weak dependency between electrospray voltage and mean vapor velocity, implying that the vapor is mostly neutral; thus, the vapor is not accelerated by electric field. On the other hand, electrospraying solutions of analytes (with mass 151 Da or 12 kDa) did not remarkably increase the overall vapor flow velocity. The source of vapor's velocity is attributed to the inertia of the electrospray droplets. Although there are some differences between a modern electrospray ionization (ESI) setup and the setup used in our experiment (e.g., using a higher flow rate and larger emitter), we believe the findings of our study can be projected to a modern ESI setup.

Enhanced aerodynamic reach of vapor and aerosol sampling for real-time mass spectrometric detection using Venturi-assisted entrainment and ionization

Venturi-assisted ENTrainment and Ionization (VENTI) was developed, demonstrating efficient entrainment, collection, and transport of remotely sampled vapors, aerosols, and dust particulate for real-time mass spectrometry (MS) detection. Integrating the Venturi and Coandă effects at multiple locations generated flow and analyte transport from non-proximate locations and more importantly enhanced the aerodynamic reach at the point of collection. Transport through remote sampling probes up to 2.5 m in length was achieved with residence times on the order of 10^-2 s to 10^-1 s and Reynolds numbers on the order of 10³ to 10⁴. The Venturi-assisted entrainment successfully enhanced vapor collection and detection by greater than an order of magnitude at 20 cm stand-off (limit of simple suction). This enhancement is imperative, as simple suction restricts sampling to the immediate vicinity, requiring close proximity to the vapor source. In addition, the overall aerodynamic reach distance was increased by approximately 3-fold over simple suction under the investigated conditions. Enhanced aerodynamic reach was corroborated and observed with laser-light sheet flow visualization and schlieren imaging. Coupled with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), the detection of a range of volatile chemical vapors; explosive vapors; explosive, narcotic, and mustard gas surrogate (methyl salicylate) aerosols; and explosive dust particulate was demonstrated. Continuous real-time Venturi-assisted monitoring of a large room (approximately 90 m² area, 570 m³ volume) was demonstrated for a 60-min period without the remote sampling probe, exhibiting detection of chemical vapors and methyl salicylate at approximately 3 m stand-off distances within 2 min of exposure.

Nanoporous Silicon Combustion: Observation of Shock Wave and Flame Synthesis of Nanoparticle Silica

The persistent hydrogen termination present in nanoporous silicon (nPS) is unique compared to other forms of nanoscale silicon (Si) which typically readily form a silicon dioxide passivation layer. The hydrogen terminated surface combined with the extremely high surface area of nPS yields a material capable of powerful exothermic reactions when combined with strong oxidizers. Here, a galvanic etching mechanism is used to produce nPS both in bulk Si wafers as well as in patterned regions of Si wafers with microfabricated ignition wires. An explosive composite is generated by filling the pores with sodium perchlorate (NaClO4). Using high-speed video including Schlieren photography, a shock wave is observed to propagate through air at 1127 ± 116 m/s. Additionally, a fireball is observed above the region of nPS combustion which persists for nearly 3× as long when reacted in air compared to N2, indicating that highly reactive species are generated that can further combust with excess oxygen. Finally, reaction products from either nPS-NaClO4 composites or nPS alone combusted with only high pressure O2 (400 psig) gas as an oxidizer are captured in a calorimeter bomb. The products in both cases are similar and verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to include nano- to micrometer scale SiOx particles. This work highlights the complex oxidation mechanism of nPS composites and demonstrates the ability to use a solid state reaction to create a secondary gas phase combustion.

Visualizing mass transport in desorption electrospray ionization using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry: a look at the geometric configuration of the spray

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) was used to visualize the transport of analyte molecules desorbed onto a silicon wafer collection substrate by desorption electrospray ionization (DESI). The effect of spray incidence angle, tip height, and probe distance on the concentration and the spatial distribution of desorbed analyte molecules were investigated with the objective of identifying DESI operational parameters that provide more reproducible results by achieving steady ion transmission and minimized material loss. An incidence angle between 25° and 35° with respect to the plane of the surface provided the best compromise between maximizing ambient MS signal and achieving the best reliability. Glancing incidence angles provided higher ambient MS signals through a tighter dispersion of the secondary droplet plume, but run-to-run variability of as much as 40%. On the other hand, steeper incidence angles led to a widening of the lateral dispersion of the secondary droplets and decreased analyte desorption. For all incidence angles, shorter probe distances were preferred since the resulting tighter dispersion of the secondary droplets produced higher ion transmission and therefore higher ambient MS signals. Tip height was found to correlate with the spot size (footprint) of the spray on the surface; changing the tip height from (1 to 2 to 3) mm changed the diameter of the spray impact area from (1.3, 1.8, to 2.1) mm, respectively. For shorter probe to MS inlet distances, larger tip heights increased the ambient MS signal due to increased analyte desorption while maintaining a tighter dispersion of the secondary droplet plume. Equally important to optimizing instrument configuration was the understanding that the deposition of a sample onto the surface resulted in a coffee ring, where the diameter was larger than the spot size of the spray. Higher tip heights may be preferred for a more consistent analyte response since all or a large fraction of the analyte could be sampled to reduce variability in ambient MS response. The study showed that ToF-SIMS can be used as a unique tool for characterizing the transport of desorbed analyte molecules for DESI, and potentially offers insight into new interface designs for improved transmission of analyte into the mass spectrometer.
