From cubane-assembled Mn-oxo clusters to monodispersed manganese oxide colloidal nanocrystals

The assemblies of [M4O4] (M = metal) cubanes represent a fascinating class of materials for a variety of application fields. Although such a structural characteristic is relatively common in small molecules and in extended bulk solids, high nuclearity clusters composed of multiple [M4O4] units as their backbones are rare. In this work, we report two new Mn-oxo clusters, MnII 8MnIII 10O10(OOCMe)12(OMe)14(py)2 ([Mn18-Ac]) and MnII 4MnIII 14O14(OOCCMe3)8(OMe)14(MeOH)5(py) ([Mn18-Piv]), whose core structures are assemblies of either 6- or 7-cubanes in different packing patterns, which have been unambiguously revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The cubane-assembled structural features can be deemed as the embryonic structures of the bulk manganese oxide. Herein, this report demonstrates the first case study of utilizing Mn-oxo clusters as precursors for the preparation of manganese oxide nanocrystals, which has never been explored before. Through a simple colloidal synthetic approach, high-quality, monodisperse Mn3O4 nanocrystals can be readily prepared by employing both precursors, while their morphologies were found to be quite different. This work confirms that the structural similarity between precursors and nanomaterials is instrumental in affording more kinetically efficient pathways for materials formation, and the structure of the precursor has a significant impact on the morphology of final nanocrystal products.

Evaluation of Manganese Cubanoid Clusters for Water Oxidation Catalysis: From Well-Defined Molecular Coordination Complexes to Catalytically Active Amorphous Films

With a view to developing multimetallic molecular catalysts that mimic the oxygen-evolving catalyst (OEC) in Nature's photosystem II, the synthesis of various dicubanoid manganese clusters is described and their catalytic activity investigated for water oxidation in basic, aqueous solution. Pyridinemethanol-based ligands are known to support polynuclear and cubanoid structures in manganese coordination chemistry. The chelators 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (H₂ L¹ ) and 6-methyl-2-pyridinemethanol (HL² ) were chosen to yield polynuclear manganese complexes; namely, the tetranuclear defective dicubanes [Mn^II ₂ Mn^III ₂ (HL¹ )₄ (OAc)₄ (OMe)₂ ] and [Mn^II ₂ Mn^III ₂ (HL¹ )₆ (OAc)₂ ] (OAc)₂ ⋅2 H₂ O, as well as the octanuclear-dicubanoid [Mn^II ₆ Mn^III ₂ (L² )₄ (O)₂ (OAc)₁₀ (HOMe/OH₂ )₂ ]⋅3MeOH⋅MeCN. In freshly prepared solutions, polynuclear species were detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, whereas X-band electron paramagnetic resonance studies in dilute, liquid solution suggested the presence of divalent mononuclear Mn species with g values of 2. However, the magnetochemical investigation of the complexes' solutions by the Evans technique confirmed a haphazard combination of manganese coordination complexes, from mononuclear to polynuclear species. Subsequently, the newly synthesized and characterized manganese molecular complexes were employed as precursors to prepare electrode-deposited films in a buffer-free solution to evaluate and compare their stability and catalytic activity for water oxidation electrocatalysis.

Embedding MnO@Mn3 O4 Nanoparticles in an N-Doped-Carbon Framework Derived from Mn-Organic Clusters for Efficient Lithium Storage

The first synthesis of MnO@Mn₃ O₄ nanoparticles embedded in an N-doped porous carbon framework (MnO@Mn₃ O₄ /NPCF) through pyrolysis of mixed-valent Mn₈ clusters is reported. The unique features of MnO@Mn₃ O₄ /NPCF are derived from the distinct interfacial structure of the Mn₈ clusters, implying a new methodological strategy for hybrids. The characteristics of MnO@Mn₃ O₄ are determined by conducting high angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) valence-state analyses. Due to the combined advantages of MnO@Mn₃ O₄ , the uniform distribution, and the NPCF, MnO@Mn₃ O₄ /NPCF displays unprecedented lithium-storage performance (1500 mA h g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1 over 270 cycles). Quantitative analysis reveals that capacitance and diffusion mechanisms account for Li⁺ storage, wherein the former dominates. First-principles calculations highlight the strong affiliation of MnO@Mn₃ O₄ and the NPCF, which favor structural stability. Meanwhile, defects of the NPCF decrease the diffusion energy barrier, thus enhancing the Li⁺ pseudocapacitive process, reversible capacity, and long cycling performance. This work presents a new methodology to construct composites for energy storage and conversion.

Manganese clusters of aromatic oximes: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

With the aim of tuning the structures by using oxime ligands with different non-coordinating groups, three aromatic oxime ligands were designed by fusing oxime groups ([double bond, length as m-dash]N-OH) onto different non-coordinating groups. Their reactions with the corresponding Mn(ii) salts gave five manganese clusters [Mn(μ₃-O)(L¹)₃(DMF)(H₂O)₃Cl]·2DMF·CH₃OH (1), [Mn(μ₃-O)(L²)₃(OAc)(CH₃OH)₂] (2), [Mn(μ₃-O)₂(L²)₆(H₂O)(py)₇](ClO₄)₂·py·0.5CH₃OH·2H₂O (3), [MnO₄(L²)₈(DMF)₄]·DMF·6CH₃CN (4), and [MnMnO₄(L³)₁₂]·3DMF·6H₂O (5), in which H₂L¹, H₂L² and HL³ represent indane-1,2,3-trione-1,2-dioxime, acenaphthenequinone dioxime, and 9,10-phenanthrenedione-9-oxime, respectively. Their structures were determined and studied in detail. 1 and 2 show planar triangular trinuclear Mn structures. 3 has a hexanuclear Mn skeleton formed from two Mn triangular units through inter-trinuclear mutual coordination. 4 and 5 present octanuclear skeletons constructed from planar triangular Mn₃O and tetrahedral Mn₄O secondary building units, respectively, with different symmetries and different oxidation states of the manganese ions. Their structural studies reveal a significant contribution of the parent rings for fusing oxime groups, different non-coordinating groups and anions to the formation of different cluster skeletons. Their magnetic properties were investigated and simulated, which revealed the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between the metal ions in these compounds.
