Abstract
The separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides is a key step in the sustainable development of nuclear energy, and it is currently mainly realized via liquid-liquid extraction techniques. The underlying mechanism is complicated and remains ambiguous, which hinders the further development of extraction. Herein, to better understand the mechanism of the extraction, the contributing factors for the extraction are discussed (specifically, the sulfur-donating ligand, Cyanex301) by combing molecular dynamics simulations and experiments. This work is expected to contribute to improve our systematic understanding on a molecular scale of the extraction of lanthanides and actinides, and to assist in the extensive studies on the design and optimization of novel ligands with improved performance.

Abstract
Designing ligands that can effectively separate actinide An(III)/lanthanide Ln(III) in the solvent extraction process remains one of the key issues in the treatment of accumulated spent nuclear fuel. Nitrogen donor ligands are considered as promising extractants for the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) due to their environmental friendliness. Four new macrocyclic N-donor hexadentate extractants were designed and their coordination with Am(III) and Eu(III), as well as their extraction selectivity and separation performance for Am(III) and Eu(III), were investigated by scalar relativistic density functional theory. A variety of theoretical methods have been used to evaluate the properties of the four ligands and the coordination structures, bonding properties, and thermodynamic properties of the complexes formed by the four ligands with Am(III) and Eu(III). The results of various wavefunction analysis methods including NBO analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis, and so on show that Am(III) has a stronger coordination ability with the ligands than Eu(III) due to the Am 5f orbitals more involved in bonding with the ligands than the Eu 4f orbitals, and the bonding environment of the N-donor in the ligand has a significant effect on its coordination ability of the metal ions. Thermodynamic analysis of the solvent extraction process shows that all of the four N-containing macrocyclic ligands have good extraction selectivity and separation performance for Am(III) and Eu(III). This study provides theoretical support for designing potential nitrogen-containing macrocyclic extractants with excellent separation performance.

Abstract
Separation of trivalent actinides (An(III)) and lanthanides (Ln(III)) poses a huge challenge in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel due to their similar chemical properties. N,N'-Diethyl-N,N'-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-DAPhen) is a potential ligand for the extraction of An(III) from Ln(III), while there are still few reports on the effect of its substituent including electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on An(III)/Ln(III) separation. Herein, the interaction of Et-Tol-DAPhen ligands modified by the electron-withdrawing groups (CF3, Br) and electron-donating groups (OH) with Am(III)/Eu(III) ions was investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The analyses of bond order, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and molecular orbital (MO) indicate that the substitution groups have a slight effect on the electronic structures of the [M(L-X)(NO3)3] (X = CF3, Br, OH) complexes. However, the thermodynamic results suggest that a ligand with the electron-donating group (L-OH) improves the extraction ability of metal ions, and the ligand modified by the electron-withdrawing group (L-Br) has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. This work could render new insights into understanding the effect of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups in tuning the selectivity of Et-Tol-DAPhen derivatives and pave the way for designing new ligands modified by substituted groups with better extraction ability and An(III)/Ln(III) selectivity.

Abstract
By means of molecular dynamics simulations, this work addresses the conformational flexibility and migration of trivalent neodymium (Nd3+) coordinated with three or six titled (thio)phosphinic ligands and shows that the fluxionality of the complexes enables them to adapt to the solvent environment during the migration. Cyanex272 forms a more compact complex than the other two types of ligands and screens more significantly the interaction between the water solvent and the metal ion in the complex, which weakens the detainment of the aqueous environment. This results in faster motion of the Nd(C272)3 complex both in its translation and rotation than the other complexes when migrating to the organic phase and wins over the other two ligands in transporting the metal ions from the aqueous phase to the organic phase. Depending on the solvent environment, these complexes may take two types of conformations to balance the forces from the environment benefited from their fluxionality. The migration of the M:L = 1:6 complexes, Nd[H(C272)2]3 and Nd[H(C301)2]3, was also investigated. The rich presence of the alkyl groups in the complexes screens the influence of the aqueous environment and benefits the transportation of metal ions to the interface. This work is expected to contribute to the community of inorganic chemistry interested in the coordination chemistry of metal ions and their behaviors in the condensed phase.

Abstract
Designing ligands with efficient actinide (An(III))/lanthanide (Ln(III)) separation performance is still one of the key issues for the disposal of accumulated radioactive waste and the recovery of minor actinides. Recently, the hydrophilic ligands as promising extractants in the innovative Selective ActiNide Extraction (i-SANEX) process show excellent selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III), such as hydroxylated-based ligands. In this work, we investigated the selective back-extraction toward Am(III) over Eu(III) with three hydrophilic hydroxylated triazolyl-based ligands (the skeleton of pyridine La, bipyridine Lb, and phenanthroline Lc) using scalar-relativistic density functional theory. The properties of three hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands and the coordination structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic properties of the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with three ligands have been evaluated using multiple theoretical methods. The results of molecular orbitals (MOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIMs), and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal that Am-N bonds possess more covalent character compared to Eu-N bonds. The thermodynamic results indicate that the complexing ability of Lb and Lc with metal ions is almost the same, which is stronger than that of La. However, La has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among three ligands, which is attributed to the largest difference in covalency between Am-Ntrzl and Eu-Ntrzl bonds in MLa(NO3)3. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the preferential selectivity of the hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands with An(III) over Ln(III) and also provides theoretical support for designing potential hydrophilic ligands with excellent separation performance of Am(III)/Eu(III).

Abstract
The efficient separation of trivalent lanthanides from minor actinides with soft-donor ligands, while showing experimental promise, has theorists continuing to search for suitable approaches for describing and interpreting selectivity. To remedy this, we employ several computational methods in describing the structure of model M(H2PX2)3 complexes, with M = Eu and Am, and X = O, S, Se, and Te, and predicting the selectivity of model phosphinic acid ligands in Eu(III)/Am(III) separation. After first establishing a set of MP2 and CCSD(T)-DKH3 results as benchmarks, we evaluate several density functionals and descriptions of valence shells for their accuracy with respect to metal-ligand bonding and selectivity. We find that commonly employed functionals with a 0-27% range of exact exchange used with small-core effective core potentials or with an explicit treatment of the relativistic effects (DKH2) incorrectly predict a decrease in the metal-ligand bond distance in going from Eu(III) to Am(III) and completely fail to track a selectivity trend, even giving a wrong sign for some or all ligands. Surprisingly, when these functionals are used in conjunction with an f-in-core description of metal ions, the correct trend in selectivity is recovered, though Am-X distances are overestimated in relation to Eu-X. Functionals with high components of exact exchange (50%) and double-hybrid functionals are reasonably aligned with benchmark results, pointing to the problems of DFT with small exact exchange fractions to handle f-electrons. Natural bond orbital analyses reveal that these poorly performing functionals disproportionately overpopulate outer f orbitals in the model complexes. We anticipate that recommendations resulting from this work will lead to more accurate theoretical descriptions of lanthanide/actinide selectivity with soft-donor chalcogen-based ligands in the future.

Abstract
To resolve the fleeting structures of lanthanide Ln3+ aqua ions in solution, we (i) performed the first ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the entire series of Ln3+ aqua ions in explicit water solvent using pseudopotentials and basis sets recently optimized for lanthanides and (ii) measured the symmetry of the hydrating waters about Ln3+ ions (Nd3+, Dy3+, Er3+, Lu3+) for the first time with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). EXAFS spectra were measured experimentally and generated from AIMD trajectories to directly compare simulation, which concurrently considers the electronic structure and the atomic dynamics in solution, with experiment. We performed a comprehensive evaluation of EXAFS multiple-scattering analysis (up to 6.5 Å) to measure Ln-O distances and angular correlations (i.e., symmetry) and elucidate the molecular geometry of the first hydration shell. This evaluation, in combination with symmetry-dependent L3- and L1-edge spectral analysis, shows that the AIMD simulations remarkably reproduces the experimental EXAFS data. The error in the predicted Ln-O distances is less than 0.07 Å for the later lanthanides, while we observed excellent agreement with predicted distances within experimental uncertainty for the early lanthanides. Our analysis revealed a dynamic, symmetrically disordered first coordination shell, which does not conform to a single molecular geometry for most lanthanides. This work sheds critical light on the highly elusive coordination geometry of the Ln3+ aqua ions.

Abstract
To provide feasible methods for the extraction of valuable metals from spent batteries or low-grade primary ores, the extraction behavior of some representative acidic phosphorus-containing compounds (APCCs) as extractants is evaluated from the perspective of experimental and theoretical investigations in this work. Aqueous solutions containing five metal ions, Ca(II), Co(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II), were made to simulate leaching liquids, and the extraction of these metals was investigated. A simplified calculated model was used to evaluate the interaction between each extractant and metal ions. The calculation results agree well with the experimental tests in trend. This work not only provides potential extractants for the extraction of valuable metals from spent batteries or low-grade primary ores but also demonstrates the practicability of the simplified calculation model.

Abstract
Nitrogen-donor ligands have been considered to be promising agents for separating trivalent actinides (An(III)) from lanthanides (Ln(III)). Thereinto, how to decorate these ligands for better extraction performance is urgent to design "perfect" separating extractants. In this work, we systematically explored a series of heterocyclic N-donor ligands (L1 = dipyridazino[4,3-c:3',4'-h]acridine, L2 = dipyridazino[3,4-a:4',3'-j]phenazine, L3 = 2,6-di(cinnolin-3-yl)pyridine)), as well as their substituted derivatives, and compared their extraction and complexation ability toward An(III) and Ln(III) ions by using quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). We found that the pyridazine N atoms probably play a notable role in electron donation to metal cations by molecular orbital (MO) and bond order analyses. Besides, the calculated results clearly verified that these N-donor ligands possess higher coordination affinity toward Am(III) over Eu(III). The rigid ligands (L1 and L2) exhibit higher selective abilities for the Am(III)/Eu(III) separation compared with that of the flexible ligand (L3). For each ligand, the 1:2 (metal/ligand) extraction reaction is predicted to be most probable in the separation process. The introduction of an alkyl group on the lateral chain or an electron-donating group on the main chain gives rise to a better extraction performance of the ligands, and the CyMe4 or MeO substituted ligands show higher extraction and separation ability. Simultaneous introduction of CyMe4 and MeO groups can enhance the extraction ability of the ligand to metal ions, but the separating ability depends on the differences of the extraction capacity of An(III) and Ln(III). This work can help to gain a more in-depth understanding the selectivity differences of similar N-donor ligands and provide more theoretical insights into the design of novel extractants for An(III)/Ln(III) separation.

Abstract
The feed wastes and waste water treatment plants are the major sources for the entry of N-oxides into the soils then to aquatic life. The complexation of actinides with potentially stable anthropogenic ligands facilitate the transportation and migration of the actinides from the source confinement. The present study describes the determination of thermodynamic parameters for the complexation of Th(IV) with the three isomeric pyridine monocarboxylates (PCNO) namely picolinic acid-N-oxide (PANO), nicotinic acid-N-oxide (NANO) and isonicotinic acid-N-oxide (IANO). The potentiometric and isothermal calorimetric titrations were carried out to determine the stability and enthalpy of the formations for all the Th(IV)-PCNO complexes. Th-PANO complexes are more stable than Th-NANO and Th-IANO complexes which can be attributed to chelate formation in the former complexes. Formation of all the Th-PCNO complexes are endothermic and are entropy driven. The geometries for all the predicted complexes are optimized the energies, bond distances and charges on individual atoms are obtained using TURBOMOLE software. The theoretical calculation corroborated the experimental determinations.

Abstract
The extraction of lanthanide series by Cyanex301, i.e., bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid (HC301), has been modeled by density functional theory calculation, taking into account the formation of both inner- and outer-sphere complexes. The inner-sphere complex Ln(C301)3 and the outer-sphere complex Ln(H2O)9(C301)3 are optimized, followed by the analysis of interaction energy, bond length, Laplacian bond orders, and Mulliken populations. The covalency degree increases in Ln-S and Ln-O bonds in the inner- and outer-sphere complexes, respectively, as the lanthanide series is traversed. Mulliken population analysis indicates the important role of the 5d-orbital participation in bonding in the formation of inner- and outer-sphere complexes. Two thermodynamic cycles regarding the formation of inner- and outer-sphere complexes are established to calculate the extraction Gibbs free energies (ΔG extr), and relaxed potential energy surface scan is utilized to model the kinetic complexation of C301 anion with hydrated metal ions. Light lanthanides can form both inner- and outer-sphere complexes, whereas heavy lanthanides only form outer-sphere complexes in biphasic extraction. After adopting the data of forming inner-sphere complex for light Ln(III) and that of forming outer-sphere complexes for heavy Ln(III), the trend of the calculated -ΔG extr agrees very well with that of the experimental distribution ratios on crossing the Ln(III) series. Results from this work help to theoretically understand the extraction behavior of Cyanex301 with respect to different Ln(III).
