Generalized Muller-Kern formula for equilibrium thickness of a wetting layer with respect to the dependence of the surface energy of island facets on the thickness of the 2D layer

Design of effective self-powered SnS2/halide perovskite photo-detection system based on triboelectric nanogenerator by regarding circuit impedance

Self-powered detectors based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) have been considered because of their capability to convert ambient mechanical energy to electrical out-put signal, instead of conventional usage of electrochemical batteries as power sources. In this regard, the self-powered photodetectors have been designed through totally two lay out called passive and active circuit. in former model, impedance matching between the TENG and the resistance of the circuit's elements is crucial, which is not investigated systematically till now. In this paper, a cost effective novel planar photodetector (PD) based on heterojunction of SnS2 sheets and Cs0.05(FA0.83 MA0.17)0.95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 three cationic lead iodide based perovskite (PVK) layer fabricated which powered by graphene oxide (GO) paper and Kapton based contact-separated TENG (CS-TENG). To achieve the high performance of this device, the proper range of the load resistances in the circuit regards to TENG's characterization has been studied. In the next steps, the integrated self-powered photo-detection system was designed by applying Kapton/FTO and hand/FTO TENG, separately, in the proposed impedance matching circuit. The calculated D* of integrated self-powered SnS2/PVK supplied by tapping the Kapton and hand on FTO is 2.83 × 1010 and 1.10 × 1013 Jones under the 10 mW/cm2 of white light intensity, the investigations determine that for designing significate performance of self-powered PD supplied by TENG, the existence of the load resistance with the well match amount to the utilized TENG is crucial. Our results which can be generalized to other types of passive self-powered sensors, are substantial to both academia and industry concepts.

Thickness-dependent elastic strain in Stranski-Krastanow growth

In this paper, we comprehensively consider the effect of the dependence of elastic strain on the thickness of deposited material on the formation of two-dimensional layers and quantum dots by the Stranski-Krastanow mechanism. The nucleation and growth of germanium quantum dots on silicon surface (100) are used as a model system for conducting experimental studies and theoretical calculations. A detailed dependence of the value of elastic strains on the effective thickness of deposited germanium is obtained. It is also shown that the magnitude of the 1/N superstructural periodicity in this system reaches 12.5%. Based on the obtained thickness dependence of lattice mismatch, a new theory is constructed for calculating the parameters of the formed islands, generalizing previously used thermodynamic models. The equilibrium and critical thicknesses of the wetting layer are determined for the first time under the assumption that lattice mismatch depends on the thickness of the deposited material. In this approximation, some unexpected results are obtained that refine traditional thermodynamic models and confirmed by experimental data. The results of this work and proposed theoretical model may be applied for strain engineering in other material systems where growth of two-dimensional materials and quantum-sized islands by the Stranski-Krastanow mechanism is realized.

Capillary-driven elastic attraction between quantum dots

We present a novel self-assembly route to align SiGe quantum dots. By a combination of theoretical analyses and experimental investigation, we show that epitaxial SiGe quantum dots can cluster in ordered closely packed assemblies, revealing an attractive phenomenon. We compute nucleation energy barriers, accounting for elastic effects between quantum dots through both elastic energy and strain-dependent surface energy. If the former is mostly repulsive, we show that the decrease in the surface energy close to an existing island reduces the nucleation barrier. It subsequently increases the probability of nucleation close to an existing island, and turns out to be equivalent to an effective attraction between dots. We show by Monte-Carlo simulations that this effect describes well the experimental results, revealing a new mechanism ruling self-organisation of quantum dots. Such a generic process could be observed in various heterogeneous systems and could pave the way for a wide range of applications.

Comparative analysis of germanium-silicon quantum dots formation on Si(100), Si(111) and Sn/Si(100) surfaces

In this paper theoretical modeling of formation and growth of germanium-silicon quantum dots in the method of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on different surfaces is carried out. Silicon substrates with crystallographic orientations (100) and (111) are considered. Special attention is paid to the question of growth of quantum dots on the silicon surface covered by tin, since germanium-silicon-tin system is extremely important for contemporary nano- and optoelectronics: for creation of photodetectors, solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and fast-speed transistors. A theoretical approach for modeling growth processes of such semiconductor compounds during the MBE is presented. Both layer-by-layer and island nucleation stages in the Stranski-Krastanow growth mode are described. A change in free energy during transition of atoms from the wetting layer to an island, activation barrier of the nucleation, critical thickness of 2D to 3D transition, as well as surface density and size distribution function of quantum dots in these systems are calculated with the help of the established model. All the theoretical speculations are carried out keeping in mind possible device applications of these materials. In particular, it is theoretically shown that using of the Si(100) surface covered by tin as a substrate for Ge deposition may be very promising for increasing size homogeneity of quantum dot array for possible applications in low-noise selective quantum dot infrared photodetectors.
