Buckybowl Molecular Tweezers for Recognition of Fullerenes

Buckybowl tweezers are a relatively young research area closely associated with the development of non-planar polycyclic aromatic systems and supramolecular chemistry. Since the appearance of the first prototypes in the early 2000s, the tweezers have undergone evolutionary changes. Nowadays they are able to effectively interact with fullerenes and the results opened up prospects for development in the field of sensing, nonlinear optics, and molecular switchers. In the present study, examples of corannulene-based and other buckybowl tweezers for the recognition of C60 and C70 fullerenes were summarized and analyzed. The main structural components of the tweezers were also reviewed in detail and their role in the formation of complexes with fullerenes was evaluated. The revealed structural patterns should trigger the development of novel recognition systems and materials with a wide range of applications.

A corannulene-based metallobox for the encapsulation of fullerenes

A corannulene-bis-N-imidazolium salt was used for the synthesis of two corannulene-bis-N-heterocyclic carbenes of dirhodium(i) complexes of formula (corannulene-di-NHC)[RhCl(COD)]2 and (corannulene-di-NHC)[RhCl(CO)2]2. Both complexes were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, and the electron-donating properties of the corannulene-di-NHC ligand were studied by means of infrared spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The complex (corannulene-di-NHC)[RhCl(COD)]2 was used for the encapsulation of fullerenes C60 and C70, generating host-guest complexes with 2 : 1 stoichiometry, as evidenced by 1H NMR and ITC titrations. Then, a tetra-rhodium(i) metallo-rectangle supported by two corannulene-bis-imidazolylidene ligands and two cofacial 4,4'-bipyridine ligands was prepared and characterized. This metallobox is capable of quantitatively encapsulating fullerenes C60 and C70, forming complexes that are highly stable even at high temperatures. The molecular structure of the metallobox with encapsulated C60 reveals a perfect size and shape complementarity that benefits from the concave-convex π-π interaction between the polyaromatic surfaces of the host and the guest.

Formation of a low-symmetry Pd8 molecular barrel employing a hetero donor tetradentate ligand, and its use in the binding and extraction of C70

The majority of reported metallo-supramolecules are highly symmetric homoleptic assemblies of M x L y type, with a few reports on assemblies that are obtained using multicomponent self-assembly or using ambidentate ligands. Herein, we report the use of an unsymmetrical tetratopic ligand (Lun) containing pyridyl and imidazole donor sites in combination with a cis-protected Pd(ii) acceptor for the formation of a low-symmetry M8Lun 4 molecular barrel (UNMB). Four potential orientational isomeric (HHHH, HHHT, HHTT, and HTHT) molecular barrels can be anticipated for the M8Lun 4 type metallo-assemblies. However, the formation of an orientational isomer (HHTT) of the barrel was suggested from single-crystal X-ray diffraction and 1H NMR analysis of UNMB. Two large open apertures at terminals and the hydrophobic confined space surrounded by four aromatic panels of Lun make UNMB a potential host for bigger guests. UNMB encapsulates fullerenes C70 and C60 favoured by non-covalent interactions between the fullerenes and aromatic panels of the ligand molecules. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that UNMB has the ability to bind C70 more strongly than its lower analogue C60. The stronger affinity of UNMB towards C70 was exploited to separate C70 from an equimolar mixture of C70 and C60. Moreover, C70 can be extracted from the C70⊂UNMB complex by toluene, and therefore, UNMB can be reused as a recyclable separating agent for C70 extraction.

Stereochemical Control of Redox CoII/CoIII-Cages with Switchable Cotton Effects Based on Labile-Static States

The structural dynamics of artificial assemblies, in aspects such as molecular recognition and structural transformation, provide us with a blueprint to achieve bioinspired applications. Here, we describe the assembly of redox-switchable chiral metal-organic cages Λ8/Δ8-[Pd6(CoIIL3)8]28+ and Λ8/Δ8-[Pd6(CoIIIL3)8]36+. These isomeric cages demonstrate an on-off chirality logic gate controlled by their chemical and stereostructural dynamics tunable through redox transitions between the labile CoII-state and static CoIII-state with a distinct Cotton effect. The transition between different states is enabled by a reversible redox process and chiral recognition originating in the tris-chelate Co-centers. All cages in two states are thoroughly characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, CV, CD, and X-ray crystallographic analysis, which clarify their redox-switching behaviors upon chemical reduction/oxidation. The stereochemical lability of the CoII-center endows the Λ8/Δ8-CoII-cages with efficient chiral-induction by enantiomeric guests, leading to enantiomeric isomerization to switch between Λ8/Δ8-CoII-cages, which can be stabilized by oxidation to their chemically inert forms of Λ8/Δ8-CoIII-cages. Kinetic studies reveal that the isomerization rate of the Δ8-CoIII-cage is at least an order of magnitude slower than that of the Δ8-CoII-cage even at an elevated temperature, while its activation energy is 16 kcal mol-1 higher than that of the CoII-cage.

Chiral Truxene-Based Self-Assembled Cages: Triple Interlocking and Supramolecular Chirogenesis

Incorporating chiral elements in host-guest systems currently attracts much attention because of the major impact such structures may have in a wide range of applications, from pharmaceuticals to materials science and beyond. Moreover, the development of multi-responsive and -functional systems is highly desirable since they offer numerous benefits. In this context, we describe herein the construction of a metal-driven self-assembled cage that associates a chiral truxene-based ligand and a bis-ruthenium complex. The maximum separation between both facing chiral units in the assembly is fixed by the intermetallic distance within the lateral bis-ruthenium complex (8.4 Å). The resulting chiral cavity was shown to encapsulate polyaromatic guest molecules, but also to afford a chiral triply interlocked [2]catenane structure. The formation of the latter occurs at high concentration, while its disassembly could be achieved by the addition of a planar achiral molecule. Interestingly the planar achiral molecule exhibits induced circular dichroism signature when trapped within the chiral cavity, thus demonstrating the ability of the cage to induce supramolecular chirogenesis.

Molecular imine cages with π-basic Au3(pyrazolate) faces

One tetrahedral and two trigonal prismatic cages with π-basic Au3(pyrazolate)3 faces were obtained by connection of pre-formed gold complexes via dynamic covalent imine chemistry. The parallel arrangement of the Au3(pyrazolate)3 complexes in the prismatic cages augments the interaction with π-acids, as demonstrated by the encapsulation of polyhalogenated aromatic compounds. The tetrahedral cage was found to act as a potent receptor for fullerenes. The structures of the three cages, as well as the structures of adducts with C60 and C70, could be established by X-ray crystallography.

Recent advances in supramolecular fullerene chemistry

Fullerene chemistry has come a long way since 1990, when the first bulk production of C60 was reported. In the past decade, progress in supramolecular chemistry has opened some remarkable and previously unexpected opportunities regarding the selective (multiple) functionalization of fullerenes and their (self)assembly into larger structures and frameworks. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of these recent developments. We describe how macrocycles and cages that bind strongly to C60 can be used to block undesired addition patterns and thus allow the selective preparation of single-isomer addition products. We also discuss how the emergence of highly shape-persistent macrocycles has opened opportunities for the study of photoactive fullerene dyads and triads as well as the preparation of mechanically interlocked compounds. The preparation of two- or three-dimensional fullerene materials is another research area that has seen remarkable progress over the past few years. Due to the rapidly decreasing price of C60 and C70, we believe that these achievements will translate into all fields where fullerenes have traditionally (third-generation solar cells) and more recently been applied (catalysis, spintronics).

Intermolecular hydrogen bonding in calix[5]arene derived cavitands regulates the molecular recognition of fullerenes

We present a readily available calix[5]arene derived cavitand receptor that is stabilized in the closed cone conformer through intermolecular hydrogen bonding with methanol molecules. The receptor features a highly spherical aromatic surface that binds C60 and C70 fullerenes effectively, and the binding event can be regulated allosterically by the addition of methanol.

Capture of Singlet Oxygen Modulates Host-Guest Behavior of Coordination Cages

The anthracene panels of two tetrahedral MII 4 L6 cages, where MII =CoII or FeII , were found to react with photogenerated singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) in a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. ESI-MS analysis showed the cobalt(II) cages to undergo complete transformation of all anthracene panels into endoperoxides, whereas the iron(II) congeners underwent incomplete conversion. The reaction was found to be partially reversible in the case of the 1-FeII cage. The dioxygen-cage cycloadducts were found to bind a set of guest molecules more weakly than the parent cages, with affinity dropping by more than two orders of magnitude in some cases. The light-driven cycloaddition reaction between cage and 1 O2 thus served as a stimulus for guest release and reuptake.

Regulating supramolecular interactions in dimeric macrocycles

Supramolecular behavior is highly dependent on many factors, including complicated microenvironments and weak interactions. Herein, we describe tuning supramolecular architectures of rigid macrocycles by synergistic effects of their geometric configurations, sizes, and guests. Two paraphenylene-based macrocycles are anchored onto different positions in a triphenylene derivative, resulting in dimeric macrocycles with different shapes and configurations. Interestingly, these dimeric macrocycles show tunable supramolecular interactions with guests. In solid state, a 2 : 1 host-guest complex was observed between 1a and C₆₀/C₇₀, while an unusual 2 : 3 host-guest complex 3C₆₀@(1b)₂ can be observed between 1b and C₆₀. This work expands the scope of the synthesis of novel rigid bismacrocycles and provides a new strategy to construct different supramolecular systems.

Encapsulating Semiconductor Quantum Dots in Supramolecular Cages Enables Ultrafast Guest-Host Electron and Vibrational Energy Transfer

In the field of supramolecular chemistry, host-guest systems have been extensively explored to encapsulate a wide range of substrates, owing to emerging functionalities in nanoconfined space that cannot be achieved in dilute solutions. However, host-guest chemistry is still limited to encapsulation of small guests. Herein, we construct a water-soluble metallo-supramolecular hexagonal prism with a large hydrophobic cavity by anchoring multiple polyethylene glycol chains onto the building blocks. Then, assembled prisms are able to encapsulate quantum dots (QDs) with diameters of less than 5.0 nm. Furthermore, we find that the supramolecular cage around each QD strongly modifies the photophysics of the QD by universally increasing the rates of QD relaxation processes via ultrafast electron and vibrational energy transfer. Taken together, these efforts expand the scope of substrates in host-guest systems and provide a new approach to tune the optical properties of QDs.

Subtle Stereochemical Effects Influence Binding and Purification Abilities of an FeII4L4 Cage

A tetrahedral Fe^II₄L₄ cage assembled from the coordination of triangular chiral, face-capping ligands to iron(II). This cage exists as two diastereomers in solution, which differ in the stereochemistry of their metal vertices, but share the same point chirality of the ligand. The equilibrium between these cage diastereomers was subtly perturbed by guest binding. This perturbation from equilibrium correlated with the size and shape fit of the guest within the host; insight as to the interplay between stereochemistry and fit was provided by atomistic well-tempered metadynamics simulations. The understanding thus gained as to the stereochemical impact on guest binding enabled the design of a straightforward process for the resolution of the enantiomers of a racemic guest.

Porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers

Porphyrin derivatives are ubiquitous in bio-organisms and are associated with proteins that play important biological roles, such as oxygen transport, photosynthesis, and catalysis. Porphyrins are very fascinating research objects for chemists, physicists, and biologists owing to their versatile chemical and physical properties. Porphyrin derivatives are actively used in various fields, such as molecular recognition, energy conversion, sensors, biomedicine, and catalysts. Porphyrin derivatives can be used as building blocks for supramolecular polymers because their primitive structures have C₄ symmetry, which allows for the symmetrical introduction of self-assembling motifs. This review describes the fabrication of porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers and novel discoveries in supramolecular polymer growth. First, we summarise the (i) design concepts, (ii) growth mechanism and (iii) analytical methods of porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers. Then, the examples of porphyrin-based supramolecular polymers formed by (iv) hydrogen bonding, (v) metal coordination-based interaction, (vi) host-guest complex formation, and (vii) others are summarised. Finally, (viii) applications and perspectives are discussed. Although supramolecular polymers, in a broad sense, can include either two-dimensional (2D) networks or three-dimensional (3D) porous polymer structures; this review mainly focuses on one-dimensional (1D) fibrous supramolecular polymer structures.

An Organic Molecular Nanobarrel that Hosts and Solubilizes C60

Organic cages have gained increasing attention in recent years as molecular hosts and porous materials. Among these, barrel-shaped cages or molecular nanobarrels are promising systems to encapsulate large hosts as they possess windows of the same size as their internal cavity. However, these systems have received little attention and remain practically unexplored despite their potential. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new trigonal prismatic organic nanobarrel with two large triangular windows with a diameter of 12.7 Å optimal for the encapsulation of C60 . Remarkably, this organic nanobarrel shows a high affinity for C60 in solvents in which C60 is virtually insoluble, providing stable solutions of C60 .

Megalo-Cavitands: Synthesis of Acridane[4]arenes and Formation of Large, Deep Cavitands for Selective C70 Uptake

Deep cavitands, concave molecular containers, represent an important supramolecular host class that has been explored for a variety of applications ranging from sensing, switching, purification and adsorption to catalysis. A major limitation in the field has been the cavitand volume that is restricted by the size of the structural platform utilized (diameter approx. 7 Å). We here report the synthesis of a novel, unprecedentedly large structural platform, named acridane[4]arene (diameter approx. 14 Å), suitable for the construction of cavitands with volumes of up to 814 Å3 . These megalo-cavitands serve as size-selective hosts for fullerenes with mM to sub-μM binding affinity for C60 and C70 . Furthermore, the selective binding of fullerene C70 in the presence of C60 was demonstrated.

M6L12 Nanospheres with Multiple C70 Binding Sites for 1O2 Formation in Organic and Aqueous Media

Singlet oxygen is a potent oxidant with major applications in organic synthesis and medicinal treatment. An efficient way to produce singlet oxygen is the photochemical generation by fullerenes which exhibit ideal thermal and photochemical stability. In this contribution we describe readily accessible M₆L₁₂ nanospheres with unique binding sites for fullerenes located at the windows of the nanospheres. Up to four C₇₀ can be associated with a single nanosphere, presenting an efficient method for fullerene extraction and application. Depending on the functionality located on the outside of the sphere, they act as vehicles for ¹O₂ generation in organic or in aqueous media using white LED light. Excellent productivity in ¹O₂ generation and consecutive oxidation of ¹O₂ acceptors using C₇₀⊂[Pd₆L₁₂], C₆₀⊂[Pd₆L₁₂] or fullerene soot extract was observed. The methodological design principles allow preparation and application of highly effective multifullerene binding spheres.

Supramolecular Ensembles Formed via Calix[5]arene-Fullerene Host-Guest Interactions

This minireview introduces the research directions for the synthesis of supramolecular fullerene polymers. First, the discovery of host-guest complexes of pristine fullerenes is briefed. We focus on progress in supramolecular fullerene polymers directed by the use of calix[5]arene-fullerene interactions, which comprise linear, networked, helical arrays of fullerenes in supramolecular ensembles. The unique self-sorting behavior of right-handed and left-handed helical supramolecular fullerene arrays is discussed. Thereafter, an extensive investigation of the calix[5]arene-fullerene interaction for control over the chain structures of covalent polymers is introduced.

Solvent Drives Switching between Λ and Δ Metal Center Stereochemistry of M8L6 Cubic Cages

An enantiopure ligand with four bidentate metal-binding sites and four (S)-carbon stereocenters self-assembles with octahedral Zn^II or Co^II to produce O-symmetric M₈L₆ coordination cages. The Λ- or Δ-handedness of the metal centers forming the corners of these cages is determined by the solvent environment: the same (S)-ligand produces one diastereomer, (S)₂₄-Λ₈-M₈L₆, in acetonitrile but another with opposite metal-center handedness, (S)₂₄-Δ₈-M₈L₆, in nitromethane. Van ’t Hoff analysis revealed the Δ stereochemical configuration to be entropically favored but enthalpically disfavored, consistent with a loosening of the coordination sphere and an increase in conformational freedom following Λ-to-Δ transition. The binding of 4,4′-dipyridyl naphthalenediimide and tetrapyridyl Zn-porphyrin guests did not interfere with the solvent-driven stereoselectivity of self-assembly, suggesting applications where either a Λ- or Δ-handed framework may enable chiral separations or catalysis.

Cooperativity of steric bulk and H-bonding in coordination sphere engineering: heteroleptic PdII cages and bowls by design

Recently developed self-assembly strategies allow to rationally reduce the symmetry of metallosupramolecular architectures. In addition, the combination of multiple ligand types without creating compound mixtures has become possible. Among several approaches to realize non-statistical heteroleptic assembly, Coordination Sphere Engineering (CSE) makes use of secondary repulsive or attractive interactions in direct vicinity of the metal nodes. Previously, we used steric congestion to turn dinuclear [Pd2L4] cages with fourfold symmetry into [Pd2L3X2] (X = solvent, halide) bowl structures. Here, we introduce a new subtype of this strategy based on balancing hydrogen bonding and repulsive interactions between ligands carrying quinoline (LQu) and 1,8-naphthyridine (LNa) donors to generate trans-[Pd2L2] and [Pd2L3L'] cages, assisted by templation of encapsulated fullerenes. Combined with steric congestion caused by acridine (LAc) donors, we further report the first example of a heteroleptic [Pd2L2L'X2] bowl. Formation, structure and fullerene binding ability of these metallo-supramolecular hosts were studied by NMR, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Multifunctional Anthracene-Based Ni-MOF with Encapsulated Fullerenes: Polarized Fluorescence Emission and Selective Separation of C70 from C60

We report an anthracene-based Ni-MOF [Ni(II) metal-organic framework, {[Ni(μ₂-L)₂Cl₂]·x(C₆H₆)·y(MeOH)}_n (1), L = anthracene-9,10-diylbis(methylene)diisonicotinate] whose crystal structure reveals the presence of hexagonal channels with a pore size of 1.4 nm that can accommodate guests such as C₆₀ and C₇₀. Both confocal fluorescence and Raman microscopy results are in agreement with a homogeneous distribution of fullerenes throughout the single crystals of 1. Efficient energy transfer from 1 to the fullerenes was observed, which emitted partially polarized fluorescence emission. Stronger binding between 1 and C₇₀ versus C₆₀ was confirmed from HPLC analysis of the dissolved material and provides a basis for the selective retention of C₇₀ in liquid chromatography columns packed with 1.

Third-order nonlinear optical property contrast as self-assembly recognition for nanorings⊃C60

High third-order NLO contrasts tuned by self-assembly can be applied for the recognition of host–guest nanorings⊃C60.

A self-assembled M2L2 truncated square and its application as a container for fullerenes

An unprecedented bisthianthrene dipyridyl ligand was designed and synthesized for coordination driven self-assembly. The combination of this conformationally dynamic linker with a 90° convergent metal corner exclusively afforded a novel M₂L₂ truncated square-like metallamacrocycle. The single crystal X-ray structure reveals a belt-shaped geometry with a cavity diameter of ca. 13.7 Å. The breathable cavity and electron-rich thianthreno panels enable the highly efficient binding of the fullerenes C₆₀ (K_a = 5.1 × 10⁶ M^-1) and C₇₀ (K_a = 3.7 × 10⁶ M^-1). The encapsulation of C₆₀ is fully confirmed by NMR, mass spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The cyclic voltammograms further reveal that the truncated square is redox active. The strong binding affinity, adaptive complexation, and redox activity of the thianthrene-incorporated metallamacrocycle provide new insights into the design of supramolecular hosts.

Exploring the Assembly of Resorc[4]arenes for the Construction of Supramolecular Nano-Aggregates

Many biologically active compounds feature low solubility in aqueous media and, thus, poor bioavailability. The formation of the host-guest complex by using calixarene-based macrocycles (i.e., resorcinol-derived cyclic oligomers) with a good solubility profile can improve solubilization of hydrophobic drugs. Herein, we explore the ability of resorc[4]arenes to self-assemble in polar solutions, to form supramolecular aggregates, and to promote water-solubility of an isoflavone endowed with anti-cancer activity, namely Glabrescione B (GlaB). Accordingly, we synthesized several architectures featuring a different pattern of substitution on the upper rim including functional groups able to undergo acid dissociation (i.e., carboxyl and hydroxyl groups). The aggregation phenomenon of the amphiphilic resorc[4]arenes has been investigated in a THF/water solution by UV–visible spectroscopy, at different pH values. Based on their ionization properties, we demonstrated that the supramolecular assembly of resorc[4]arene-based systems can be modulated at given pH values, and thus promoting the solubility of GlaB.

Long-Lived C60 Radical Anion Stabilized Inside an Electron-Deficient Coordination Cage

Fullerene C₆₀ and its derivatives are widely used in molecular electronics, photovoltaics, and battery materials, because of their exceptional suitability as electron acceptors. In this context, single-electron transfer on C₆₀ generates the C₆₀^• - radical anion. However, the short lifetime of free C₆₀^• - hampers its investigation and application. In this work, we dramatically stabilize the usually short-lived C₆₀^• - species within a self-assembled M₂L₄ coordination cage consisting of a triptycene-based ligand and Pd(II) cations. The electron-deficient cage strongly binds C₆₀ by providing a curved inner π-surface complementary to the fullerene's globular shape. Cyclic voltammetry revealed a positive potential shift for the first reduction of encapsulated C₆₀, which is indicative of a strong interaction between confined C₆₀^• - and the cationic cage. Photochemical one-electron reduction with 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide allows selective and quantitative conversion of the confined C₆₀ molecule in millimolar acetonitrile solution at room temperature. Radical generation was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The lifetime of C₆₀^• - within the cage was determined to be so large that it could still be detected after one month under an inert atmosphere.

Capture of Fullerenes in Cages and Rings by Forming Metal-π Bond Arene Interactions

Nowadays, the task of the selectively capture of fullerene molecules from soot is the subject of several studies. The low solubility of fullerenes represents a drawback when the goal is to purify them and to carry out chemical procedures where they participate. There are different molecules that can act as a kind of cocoon, giving shelter to the fullerene cages in such a way that they can be included in a solution or can be extracted from a mix. In this work, a theoretical study of some known and new proposed organic molecules of this kind is presented. In all cases, the interaction occurs with the help of a metallic atom or ion which plays the role of a bridge, providing a place for a metallocene like interaction to occur. The thermodynamic arguments favoring the formation of this adduct species are addressed as well as the nature of the bond by means QTAIM parameters and frontier molecular orbitals analysis.

Recent advances in heteroleptic multiple-stranded metallosupramolecules

Well-ordered combination of defined coordination spheres and multiple types of ligands (heteroleptic) in a given structure can expand the structural complexity and functional diversity of the resulting metallosupramolecules. Such heteroleptic metallosupramolecular architectures are expected to afford advanced utility in a variety of applications. In this concise review article, recent advances in the development of multi-nuclear-cluster-based heteroleptic multiple-stranded (HLMS) metallosupramolecules are summarized and demonstrated. To construct HLMS metallosupramolecules, one type of multitopic ligands can be employed for building up multiple strands, while another type of ligands can be utilized to construct multi-nuclear clusters. Most HLMS metallosupramolecules adopt helical geometries and have high molecular symmetry, which can be key factors for the structural completion. HLMS metallosupramolecules can be used as basic building blocks for the fabrication of higher-order polymeric or discrete assembly architectures with well-defined geometries.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of a series of dinuclear M2L2 mesocates with a bis-bidentate pyridylimine ligand

Four isostructural dinuclear M2L2 mesocates of the general formula [M2(NCS)4(L)2]·4.5MeOH (1M; M = Mn, Fe, Co, Zn) were constructed by using the coordination-driven self-assembly of the [M(NCS)2] precursor and the flexible bis-bidentate pyridylimine Schiff base ligand L (L = 4,4'-(1,4-phenylenebis(oxy))bis(N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)aniline). The centrosymmetric M2L2 mesocate forms through the side-by-side coordination of two L ligands to a pair of M(ii) ions. The mesocates exhibit a reversible temperature induced desolvation-solvation behavior without losing their structural integrity. The activated 1Co, as the representative M2L2 mesocate, shows an exceptionally high MeOH vapour uptake capacity of 481.9 cm3 g-1 (68.8 wt%) at STP with good recyclability. Notably, it also exhibits CO2 adsorption with an uptake capacity of 20.2 cm3 g-1 (3.6 wt%) at room temperature and 1 bar.

A Self-Assembled Palladium(II) Barrel for Binding of Fullerenes and Photosensitization Ability of the Fullerene-Encapsulated Barrel

Fullerene extracts obtained from fullerene soot lack their real application due to their poor solubility in common solvents and difficulty in purification. Encapsulation of these extracts in a suitable host is an important approach to address these issues. We present a new Pd₆ barrel (1), which is composed of three 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole panels, clipped through six cis-Pd^II acceptors. Large open windows and cavity make it an efficient host for a large guest. Favorable interactions between the ligand and fullerene (C₆₀ and C₇₀ ) allows the barrel to encapsulate fullerene efficiently. Thorough investigation reveals that barrel 1 has a stronger binding affinity towards C₇₀ over C₆₀ , resulting in the predominant extraction of C₇₀ from a mixture of the two. Finally, the fullerene encapsulated barrels C₆₀ ⊂1 and C₇₀ ⊂1 were found to be efficient for visible-light-induced singlet oxygen generation. Such preferential binding of C₇₀ and photosensitizing ability of C₆₀ ⊂1 and C₇₀ ⊂1 are noteworthy.

Control of guest binding behavior of metal-containing host molecules by ligand exchange

This review describes the control of guest binding behavior of metal-containing host molecules that is driven by ligand exchange reactions at the metal centers. Recently, a vast number of metal-containing host molecules including metal-assisted self-assembled structures have been developed, and the structural transformation after construction of the host framework has now been of interest from the viewpoint of functional switching and tuning. Among the various kinds of chemical transformations, ligand exchange has a great advantage in the structural conversions of metal-containing hosts, because ligand exchange usually proceeds under mild conditions that do not affect the host framework. In this review, the structural transformations are classified into three types: (1) weak-link approach, (2) subcomponent substitution, and (3) post-metalation modification, according to the type of coordination motif. The control of their guest binding behavior by the structural transformations is discussed in detail.

Effective Encapsulation of C60 by Metal-Organic Frameworks with Polyamide Macrocyclic Linkers

A flexible benzylic amide macrocycle, functionalized with two carboxylic acid groups, was employed as the organic ligand for the preparation of robust copper(II)- and zinc(II)-based metal-organic frameworks. These polymers crystallized in the C2/m space group of the monoclinic crystal system, creating non-interpenetrated channels in one direction with an extraordinary solvent-accessible volume of 46 %. Unlike metal-organic rotaxane frameworks having benzylic amide macrocycles as linkers, the absence of the thread in these novel reticular materials causes a decrease of dimensionality and an improvement of pore size and dynamic guest adaptability. We studied the incorporation of fullerene C₆₀ inside the adjustable pocket generated between two macrocycles connected to the same dinuclear clusters, occupying a remarkable 98 % of the cavities inside the network. The use of these materials as hosts for the selective recognition of different fullerenes was evaluated, mainly encapsulating the smaller size fullerene derivative in several mixtures of C₆₀ and C₇₀ .

Porphyrin-based systems containing polyaromatic fragments: decoupling the synergistic effects in aromatic-porphyrin-fullerene systems

In this work, we report a two-step synthesis that allows the introduction of four pyrene or corannulene fragments at the para position of meso-tetraarylporphyrins using a microwave-assisted quadruple Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. Placing the PAHs at this position, further from the porphyrin core, avoids the participation of the porphyrin core in binding with fullerenes. The fullerene hosting ability of the four new molecular receptors was investigated by NMR titrations and DFT studies. Despite having two potential binding sites, the pyrene derivatives did not associate with C60 or C70. In contrast, the tetracorannulene derivatives bound C60 and C70, although with modest binding constants. In these novel para-substituted systems, the porphyrin core acts as a simple linker that does not participate in the binding process, which allows the system to be considered as two independent molecular tweezers; i.e., the first binding event is not transmitted to the second binding site. This behavior can be considered a direct consequence of the decoupling of the porphyrin core from the binding event.

An atropisomeric M2L4 cage mixture displaying guest-induced convergence and strong guest emission in water

Introduction of atropisomeric axes into a bent bispyridine ligand leads to the quantitative formation of a complex mixture of atropisomeric M2L4 cages upon treatment with metal ions. Whereas the isomer ratio of the obtained cage mixture, consisting of up to 42 isomers, is insensitive to temperature and solvent, the quantitative convergence from the mixture to a single isomer is accomplished upon encapsulation of a large spherical guest, namely fullerene C60. The observed isomerization with other guests depends largely on their size and shape (e.g., <10 and 82% convergence with planar triphenylene and bowl-shaped corannulene guests, respectively). Besides the unusual guest-induced convergence, the present cage mixture displays the strongest guest emission (Φ F = 68%) among previously reported M n L m cages and capsules, upon encapsulation of a BODIPY dye in water.
