An ytterbium complex with unique luminescence properties: detecting the temperature based on a luminescence spectrum without the interference of oxygen

Two pairs of chiral YbIII enantiomers presenting distinct NIR luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence performances with giant differences in second-harmonic generation responses

By introducing enantiomerically pure mono-bidentate N-donor ligands (LR/LS) into Yb(btfa)3(H2O)2 and Yb(dbm)3(H2O), respectively, two pairs of chiral YbIII enantiomers, namely Yb(btfa)3LR/Yb(btfa)3LS (D-1/L-1) and [Yb(dbm)3LR]·[Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH)]/[Yb(dbm)3LS]·[Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH)] (D-2/L-2) were isolated, where btfa- = 3-benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetonate, dbm- = dibenzoylmethanate, and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinenepyridyl-2-pyrazine. D-1/L-1 possess mononuclear structures in which the YbIII ions are eight-coordinated, while D-2/L-2 show cocrystal structures containing Yb(dbm)3(LR/LS) and Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH) moieties in which the two YbIII ions are eight and seven-coordinated, respectively. They not only feature different molecular structures but also present distinct linear and nonlinear optical performances. Chiral mononuclear D-1 has better near infrared photo-luminescence (NIR-PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances than chiral cocrystal D-2. More remarkably, D-1/L-1 show large second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses (up to 1.25/1.28 × KDP) 18/16 times those of D-2/L-2 (0.07/0.08 × KDP). In addition, D-2/L-2 represent the first examples of lanthanide cocrystal complexes with NIR-PL, NIR-CPL and SHG properties.

Two Chiral YbIII Enantiomeric Pairs with Distinct Enantiomerically Pure N-Donor Ligands Presenting Significant Differences in Photoluminescence, Circularly Polarized Luminescence, and Second-Harmonic Generation

Using enantiomerically pure bidentate and tridentate N-donor ligands (¹L_R/¹L_S and ²L_R/²L_S) to replace two coordinated H₂O molecules of Yb(tta)₃(H₂O)₂, respectively, two eight- and nine-coordinated Yb^III enantiomeric pairs, namely, Yb(tta)₃¹L_R/Yb(tta)₃¹L_S (Yb-R-1/Yb-S-1) and [Yb(tta)₃²L_R]·CH₃CN/[Yb(tta)₃²L_S]·CH₃CN (Yb-R-2/Yb-S-2), were isolated, in which Htta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone, ¹L_R/¹L_S = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinene-2,2'-bipyridine, and ²L_R/²L_S = (-)/(+)-2,6-bis(4',5'-pinene-2'-pyridyl)pyridine. Interestingly, they not only present distinct degrees of chirality but also show large differences in near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL), circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and second-harmonic generation (SHG). Eight-coordinated Yb-R-1 with an asymmetric bidentate ¹L_R ligand has a high NIR-PL quantum yield (1.26%) and a long decay lifetime (20 μs) at room temperature, being more than two times those (0.48%, 8 μs) of nine-coordinated Yb-R-2 with a C₂-symmetric tridentate ²L_R ligand. In addition, Yb-R-1 displays an efficient CPL with a luminescence dissymmetry factor g_lum = 0.077, being 4 × Yb-R-2 (0.018). In particular, Yb-R-1 presents a strong SHG response (0.8 × KDP), which is 8 × Yb-R-2 (0.1 × KDP). More remarkably, the precursor Yb(tta)₃(H₂O)₂ exhibits a strong third-harmonic generation (THG) response (41 × α-SiO₂), while the introduction of chiral N-donors results in the switching of THG to SHG. Our interesting findings provide new insights into both the functional regulation and switching in multifunctional lanthanide molecular materials.

Stereocontrolled Self-Assembly of Ln(III)-Pt(II) Heterometallic Cages with Temperature-Dependent Luminescence

Structurally well-defined discrete d/f heterometallic complexes show diverse application potential in electrooptic and magnetic materials. However, precise control of the component and topology of such heterometallic compounds with fine-tuned photophysical properties is still challenging. Herein, we report the stereocontrolled syntheses of a series of Ln^III-Pt^II heterometallic cages through coordination-driven self-assembly of enantiopure alkynylplatinum-based metalloligands (L₁^R/S, L₂^R/S) with lanthanide ions (Ln = Eu^III, Yb^III, Nd^III, Lu^III). Taking advantage of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state on the designed alkynylplatinum ligands, the excitation window for the sensitized near-infrared (NIR) luminescence on the Yb^III- and Nd^III-containing cages can be extended to the visible region (up to 500 nm). Linear temperature-dependent red and NIR emissions observed on the Ln₄(L₂^R/S)₆ (Ln^III = Eu^III and Yb^III, respectively) complexes suggest their potential applications as luminescent temperature sensors, with sensitivities of -0.54% (Ln^III = Eu^III, 77-250 K) and -0.17% (Ln^III = Yb^III, 77-300 K) per K achieved. This work not only offers a good strategy to prepare new d/f heterometallic supramolecular cages but also paves the way for the design of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials.

Lanthanide porphyrinoids as molecular theranostics

In recent years, lanthanide (Ln) porphyrinoids have received increasing attention as theranostics. Broadly speaking, the term 'theranostics' refers to agents designed to allow both disease diagnosis and therapeutic intervention. This Review summarises the history and the 'state-of-the-art' development of Ln porphyrinoids as theranostic agents. The emphasis is on the progress made within the past decade. Applications of Ln porphyrinoids in near-infrared (NIR, 650-1700 nm) fluorescence imaging (FL), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiotherapy, and chemotherapy will be discussed. The use of Ln porphyrinoids as photo-activated agents ('phototheranostics') will also be highlighted in the context of three promising strategies for regulation of porphyrinic triplet energy dissipation pathways, namely: regioisomeric effects, metal regulation, and the use of expanded porphyrinoids. The goal of this Review is to showcase some of the ongoing efforts being made to optimise Ln porphyrinoids as theranostics and as phototheranostics, in order to provide a platform for understanding likely future developments in the area, including those associated with structure-based innovations, functional improvements, and emerging biological activation strategies.

Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence at 1550 nm from Enantiopure Molecular Erbium Complexes

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in two subregions of the near-infrared (NIR) has been achieved. By leveraging the rigidity and diminishing detrimental vibrations of the heterobimetallic binolate complexes of erbium [(Binol)₃ErNa₃], species exhibiting an exceptionally high dissymmetry factor (|g_lum |) of 0.47 at 1550 nm were obtained. These erbium complexes are the first reported examples of CPL observed beyond 1200 nm. Analogous complexes of ytterbium and neodymium also exhibited strong CPL (|g_lum| = 0.17, 0.05, respectively) in a higher energy NIR window (800-1200 nm). All complexes exhibit high quantum yields (Er: 0.58%, Yb: 17%, Nd: 9.3%) and high B_CPL values (Er: 57 M^-1 cm^-1, Yb: 379 M^-1 cm^-1, Nd: 29 M^-1 cm^-1). Because of their strong CPL emission in the telecom band (1550 nm), biologically relevant NIR emission window (800-1100 nm), and synthetic versatility, the complexes reported here could permit further promising developments in quantum communication technologies and biologically relevant sensors.

Proton Conductive Luminescent Thermometer Based on Near-Infrared Emissive {YbCo2} Molecular Nanomagnets

Lanthanide(III)-based coordination complexes have been explored as a source of bifunctional molecular materials combining Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior with visible-to-near-infrared photoluminescence. In pursuit of more advanced multifunctionality, the next target is to functionalize crystalline solids based on emissive molecular nanomagnets toward high proton conductivity and an efficient luminescent thermometric effect. Here, a unique multifunctional molecule-based material, (H₅O₂)₂(H)[Yb^III(hmpa)₄][Co^III(CN)₆]₂·0.2H₂O (1, hmpa = hexamethylphosphoramide), composed of molecular {YbCo₂}^3- anions noncovalently bonded to acidic H₅O₂⁺ and H⁺ ions, is reported. The resulting Yb^III complexes present a slow magnetic relaxation below 6 K and room temperature NIR 4f-centered photoluminescence sensitized by [Co(CN)₆]^3- ions. The microporous framework, built on these emissive magnetic molecules, exhibits a high proton conductivity of the H-hopping mechanism reaching σ of 1.7 × 10^-4 S·cm^-1 at 97% relative humidity, which classifies 1 as a superionic conductor. Moreover, the emission pattern is strongly temperature-dependent which was utilized in achieving a highly sensitive single-center luminescent thermometer with a relative thermal sensitivity, S_r > 1% K^-1 in the 50-175 K range. This work shows an unprecedented combination of magnetic, optical, and electrical functionalities in a single phase working as a proton conductive NIR-emissive thermometer based on Single-Molecule Magnets.

This review discusses the fundamentals and design strategies for the development of thermo-responsive metal–ligand coordination materials and the applications of these materials in temperature sensing, bioimaging, information security, etc.

Near-IR Luminescent YbIII Coordination Polymers Composed of Pyrene Derivatives for Thermostable Oxygen Sensors

Oxygen-sensitive and near-infrared (NIR) luminescent Yb^III coordination polymers incorporating ligands based on pyrene derivatives were synthesized: Yb^III -TBAPy and Yb^III -TIAPy (TBAPy: 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoate)pyrene; TIAPy: 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(3,5-isophthalic acid)pyrene). The coordination structures of these materials have been characterized by means of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. Moreover, the porous structure of Yb^III -TIAPy has been evaluated by measuring its N₂ adsorption isotherm. The NIR luminescence properties of Yb^III -TBAPy and Yb^III -TIAPy have been examined by acquiring emission spectra and determining emission lifetimes under air or argon and in vacuo. Yb^III -TIAPy exhibited high thermal stability (with a decomposition temperature of 400 °C), intense luminescence (with an emission quantum yield under argon of 6.6 %), and effective oxygen-sensing characteristics. These results suggest that NIR luminescent Yb^III coordination polymers prepared using pyrene derivatives could have applications in novel thermo-stable oxygen sensors.

Exploring the dual functionality of an ytterbium complex for luminescence thermometry and slow magnetic relaxation

We present a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic and optical properties of an ytterbium complex, which combines two desirable and practical features into a single molecular system. Based upon YbIII ions that promote near-infrared optical activity and a chemical backbone that is ideal for an in-depth understanding of the magnetic behaviour, we have designed a multifunctional opto-magnetic species that operates as a luminescent thermometer and as a single-molecule magnet (SMM). Our magnetic investigations, in conjunction with ab initio calculations, reveal one of the highest energy barriers reported for an YbIII-based complex. Moreover, we correlate this anisotropic barrier with the emission spectrum of the compound, wherein we provide a complete assignment of the energetic profile of the complex. Such studies lay the foundation for the design of exciting multi-faceted materials that are able to retain information at the single-molecule level and possess built-in thermal self-monitoring capabilities.

Monometallic lanthanide salicylhydrazone complexes exhibiting strong near-infrared luminescence

We report the synthesis of monometallic lanthanide complexes supported by one salicylhydrazone ligand. Complexes of neodymium, erbium, and ytterbium have been synthesized, and exhibit near infrared luminescence with modest to high quantum yields. The luminescence of ytterbium is increased by a factor of five when comparing our complex to other salicylhydrazone-supported complexes.

Silver(i) complexes of bis- and tris-(pyrazolyl)azine derivatives - dimers, coordination polymers and a pentametallic assembly

Silver(i) complexes of 2,4,6-tri(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (tpp), 2,4,6-tri(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrimidine (tpym), 2,4,6-tri(pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpt) and 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (bpt) are reported. Dinuclear [Ag2(μ-tpp)2(MeCN)2][BF4]2·2MeCN and [Ag2(μ-tpym)2(MeCN)2][BF4]2 are formed from approximately planar [AgL(NCMe)]+ (L = tpp or bpym) centres, which dimerise via apical interactions to the pendant pyrazolyl donor on each ligand. Two polymeric solvatomorph phases [Ag2(μ-tpp)2][BF4]2·nMeNO2 were obtained by crystallising AgBF4 and tpp from nitromethane solution. One is composed of the same dimeric [Ag2(μ-tpp)2]2+ motif as the MeCN solvates, but with semibridging pyrazolyl substitutents replacing the solvent ligands. The other form has helicate [Ag2(μ-tpp)2]2+ dimers linked into chains by unsupported AgAg interactions. In contrast, [Ag5(μ3-tpym)4][BF4]5·2MeNO2 contains discrete pentametallic assemblies, of a flattened [Ag4(μ-tpym)4]4+ molecular square centred by the fifth silver ion. Three helical or linear 1D coordination polymer topologies are described for [Ag(μ-tpt)]X (X- = BF4- or ClO4-), where ditopic tpt ligands bind one silver ion in a [2 + 1] geometry and the other in bidentate, [1 + 1] or monodentate fashion. Finally, [Ag(bpt)]BF4 is a polymer of square planar silver ions linked by bis-bidentate bpt ligands. Most of the tpt and bpt structures include short anionπ contacts to the ligand triazinyl rings. Electrospray mass spectra confirm the oligomeric nature of the Ag/tpym and tpt complexes in MeNO2 solution.

Design of Near-Infrared Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes Sensitive to Environmental Stimulus through Rationally Tuning the Secondary Coordination Sphere

The design of near-infrared (NIR) emissive lanthanide (Ln) complexes sensitive to external stimulus is fundamentally important for the practical application of Ln materials. Because NIR emission from Ln is extremely sensitive to X-H (X = C, N and O) bond vibration, we herein report to harness the secondary coordination sphere to design NIR luminescent lanthanide sensors. Toward this goal, we designed and synthesized two isomeric [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Co{(D₃CO)₂P = O}₃]-Yb(III)-7,8,12,13,17,18-hexafluoro-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porpholactol NIR emitters, Yb-up and Yb-down, based on the stereoisomerism of porphyrin peripheral β-hydroxyl group. Yb-up, in which β-OH is at the same side of Yb(III) center, can form an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the axial Kläui ligand, whereas Yb-down cannot because its β-OH is opposite to Yb(III) center. X-ray crystal structures and photophysical studies suggested that the intramolecular hydrogen bond plays important roles on the NIR luminescence of ytterbium(III), which shortens the distance between β-OH and Yb(III) and facilitates the nonradiative deactivation of Ln excited state. Importantly, Yb-up/down were demonstrated to be highly sensitive toward temperature and viscosity. The PMMA polymer using Yb-up as the dopant NIR emitter showed thermosensitivity up to 6.0% °C^-1 in the wide temperature range of 77-400 K, higher than that of Yb-down (3.8% °C^-1). These complexes were also explored as the first NIR viscosity sensor, revealing their potential applications as optical sensors without visible light interference. This work demonstrates the importance of secondary coordination sphere on designing NIR Ln luminescent functional materials.

Iron(II) Complexes of 2,4-Dipyrazolyl-1,3,5-triazine Derivatives-The Influence of Ligand Geometry on Metal Ion Spin State

Seven [FeL₂][BF₄]₂ complex salts were prepared, where L is a 6-substituted 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (bpt) derivative. The complexes are all crystallographically high-spin, and exhibit significant distortions from an ideal D_2d-symmetric coordination geometry. In one case, an unusual type of metal ion disorder was observed among a cubic array of ligands in the crystal lattice. The complexes are also high-spin between 3 and 300 K in the solid state and, where measured, between 239 and 333 K in CD₃CN solution. This result is unexpected, since homoleptic iron(II) complexes of related 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine, 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrazine, and 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrimidine derivatives often exhibit thermal spin-crossover behavior. Gas-phase density functional theory calculations confirm the high-spin form of [Fe(bpt)₂]²⁺ and its derivatives is stabilized relative to iron(II) complexes of the other ligand types. This reflects a weaker Fe/pyrazolyl σ-bonding interaction, which we attribute to a small narrowing of the chelate ligand bite angle associated with the geometry of the 1,3,5-triazinyl ring. Hence, the high-spin state of [Fe(bpt)₂]²⁺ centers does not reflect the electronic properties of its heterocyclic ligand donors but is imposed by the bpt ligand conformation. A high-spin homoleptic iron(III) complex of one of the bpt derivatives was also synthesized.

Photothermal-enhanced catalysis in core-shell plasmonic hierarchical Cu7S4 microsphere@zeolitic imidazole framework-8

A strategy to improve reaction activity via the photothermal effect of plasmonic semiconductor nanomaterials is demonstrated in a core–shell structured catalyst.

Conventional semiconductor photocatalysis based on band-edge absorption remains inefficient due to the limited harvesting of solar irradiation and the complicated surface/interface chemistry. Herein, novel photothermal-enhanced catalysis was achieved in a core–shell hierarchical Cu₇S₄ nano-heater@ZIF-8 heterostructures via near-infrared localized surface plasmon resonance. Our results demonstrated that both the high surface temperature of the photothermal Cu₇S₄ core and the close-adjacency of catalytic ZIF-8 shell contributed to the extremely enhanced catalytic activity. Under laser irradiation (1450 nm, 500 mW), the cyclocondensation reaction rate increased 4.5–5.4 fold compared to that of the process at room temperature, in which the 1.6–1.8 fold enhancement was due to the localized heating effect. The simulated sunlight experiments showed a photothermal activation efficiency (PTAE) of 0.07%, further indicating the validity of photothermal catalysis based on the plasmonic semiconductor nanomaterials. More generally, this approach provides a platform to improve reaction activity with efficient utilization of solar energy, which can be readily extended to other green-chemistry processes.

Simple Approach to Synthesize Amino-Functionalized Carbon Dots by Carbonization of Chitosan

Carbon dots (CDs) as a new series of fluorescent nanomaterials have drawn great attention in recent years owning to their unique properties. In this paper, a simple carbonization approach to synthesize amino-functionalized CDs was developed by using chitosan as the carbon precursor. The as-prepared CDs possessed desirable amino function group on their surface and exhibited bright luminescence with absolute quantum yield (QY) of 4.34%, excitation-, pH-dependent and up-conversion fluorescence behaviors. Furthermore, we have investigated the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of the as-prepared CDs, which demonstrated that the as-prepared CDs have the potential applications in biosensing, cellular imaging and drug delivery.

An amphidynamic inorganic–organic hybrid crystal of bromoplumbate with 1,5-bis(1-methylimidazolium)pentane exhibiting multi-functionality of a dielectric anomaly and temperature-dependent dual band emissions
