Adsorption behavior and mechanism of modified Pinus massoniana pollen microcarriers for extremely efficient and rapid adsorption of cationic methylene blue dye

Herein, a novel biosorbent was successfully fabricated through a two-step process employing Pinus massoniana pollen as raw material. The efficacy of this biosorbent in eliminating methylene blue (MB), a typical organic cationic dye, from highly concentrated industrial wastewater was investigated. The results demonstrated that by adjusting the wettability of pollen microcarriers, it is possible to significantly increase their adsorption capacity for cationic dyes, resulting in a remarkable 25-fold improvement. The modified Pinus massoniana pollen microcarriers (MPPMC) exhibited an optimal adsorption capacity (585 mg/g) under specific conditions and a rapid equilibrium (97.6% in 5 min, uptake 487.8 mg/g) even at room temperature, showing excellent performance in removing MB efficiently and quickly. It is worth noting that the modified microcarriers could be regenerated via a simple pH-controlled adsorption-desorption cycle, maintaining their superior efficiency (> 99%) even after undergoing five cycles, indicating their excellent reproducibility. The MB adsorption process on MPPMC obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and followed the Langmuir model. Through the introduced modifications, the substantial deprotonation of carboxyl groups notably augmented electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between MPPMC and MB. Overall, this study offers a sustainable, eco-friendly biological adsorbent, and the MPPMC exhibit the considerable potential for efficient and rapid removal of organic cationic dyes in wastewater.

A new bodipy/pillar[5]arene functionalized magnetic sporopollenin for the detection of Cu(II) and Hg(II) ions in aqueous solution

In this study, a new bodipy/pillar[5]arene functionalized magnetic MS-Sp-P[5]-bodipy microcapsule sensor was prepared based on the use of environmentally friendly for the selective and sensitive detection of Cu(II) and Hg(II) ions in aqueous media. SEM results used in the characterization process of the materials synthesized at each stage confirmed the structural and morphological changes in the pore structure, while other characterization results (FT-IR and XRD) elucidated the role of pillar[5]arene compound and bodipy dye in the synthesis of magnetic microcapsule sensors. The colloidal solution of MS-Sp-P[5]-bodipy (water/ethanol)) showed two fluorescence bands centered at 402 and 540 nm. The detection limits of MS-Sp-P[5]-bodipy for Hg(II) and Cu(II) were calculated to be 0.06 µM and 2.27 µM, respectively (at 540 nm). The linear range of the magnetic sensor for Hg(II) and Cu(II) was found to be in the range of 1-150 µM and 10-150 µM, respectively. The experimental results (response time, pH, temperature, sensitivity and selectivity) demonstrated the applicability and potential of the prepared magnetic microcapsule sensor for the detection of Cu(II) and Hg(II) in water and tap water samples containing heavy metal ions.

Enhancement of adsorption efficiency of crystal violet and chlorpyrifos onto pectin hydrogel@Fe3O4-bentonite as a versatile nanoadsorbent

The magnetic mesoporous hydrogel-based nanoadsornet was prepared by adding the ex situ prepared Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and bentonite clay into the three-dimentional (3D) cross-linked pectin hydrogel substrate for the adsorption of organophosphorus chlorpyrifos (CPF) pesticide and crystal violet (CV) organic dye. Different analytical methods were utilized to confirm the structural features. Based on the obtained data, the zeta potential of the nanoadsorbent in deionized water with a pH of 7 was - 34.1 mV, and the surface area was measured to be 68.90 m²/g. The prepared hydrogel nanoadsorbent novelty owes to possessing a reactive functional group containing a heteroatom, a porous and cross-linked structure that aids convenient contaminants molecules diffusion and interactions between the nanoadsorbent and contaminants, viz., CPF and CV. The main driving forces in the adsorption by the Pectin hydrogel@Fe₃O₄-bentonite adsorbent are electrostatic and hydrogen-bond interactions, which resulted in a great adsorption capacity. To determine optimum adsorption conditions, effective factors on the adsorption capacity of the CV and CPF, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial concentration of pollutants, have been experimentally investigated. Thus, in optimum conditions, i.e., contact time (20 and 15 min), pH 7 and 8, adsorbent dosage (0.005 g), initial concentration (50 mg/L), T (298 K) for CPF and CV, respectively, the CPF and CV adsorption capacity were 833.333 mg/g and 909.091 mg/g. The prepared pectin hydrogel@Fe₃O₄-bentonite magnetic nanoadsorbent presented high porosity, enhanced surface area, and numerous reactive sites and was prepared using inexpensive and available materials. Moreover, the Freundlich isotherm has described the adsorption procedure, and the pseudo-second-order model explained the adsorption kinetics. The prepared novel nanoadsorbent was magnetically isolated and reused for three successive adsorption-desorption runs without a specific reduction in the adsorption efficiency. Therefore, the pectin hydrogel@Fe₃O₄-bentonite magnetic nanoadsorbent is a promising adsorption system for eliminating organophosphorus pesticides and organic dyes due to its remarkable adsorption capacity amounts.

Removal of lead ions from wastewater using magnesium sulfide nanoparticles caged alginate microbeads

In this study, an adsorbent made of alginate (Alg) caged magnesium sulfide nanoparticles (MgS) microbeads were used to treat lead ions (Pb²⁺ ions). The MgS nanoparticles were synthesized at low temperatures, and Alg@MgS hydrogel microbeads were made by the ion exchange process of the composite materials. The newly fabricated Alg@MgS was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FT-IR. The adsorption conditions were optimized for the maximum removal of Pb²⁺ ions by adjusting several physicochemical parameters, including pH, initial concentration of lead ions, Alg/MgS dosage, reaction temperature, equilibration time, and the presence of co-ions. This is accomplished by removing the maximum amount of Pb²⁺ ions. Moreover, the adsorbent utilized more than six times with a substantial amount (not less than 60%) of Pb²⁺ ions was eliminated. Considering the ability of sodium alginate (SA) for excellent metal chelation and controlled nanosized pore structure, the adsorption equilibrium of Alg@MgS can be reached in 60 min, and the highest adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺ was 84.7 mg/g. The sorption mechanism was explored by employing several isotherms. It was found that the Freundlich model fits the adsorption process quite accurately. The pseudo-second-order model adequately described the adsorption kinetics.

Construction of a magnetic solid-phase extraction method for the analysis of azole pesticides residue in medicinal plants

In this work, a sensitive and cost-effective method for the quantitative analysis of azole pesticides residues in six medicinal plants was established based on magnetic cyclodextrin crosslinked with tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (Fe₃O₄@TFN-CDPs) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Through characterization analysis, the outer shell of Fe₃O₄@TFN-CDPs has observed coating with a network of the polymer and forming a core-shell structure. Under the optimum conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) and limits of qualification (LOQs) of target pesticides were ranged from 0.011 to 0.106 µg Kg^-1 and from 0.036 to 0.354 µg Kg^-1, respectively. Finally, the achieved recoveries of pesticides in six medicinal samples fluctuated from 60.1% to 102.3%. Altogether, this method based on Fe₃O₄@TFN-CDPs composites provided a new idea for the analysis of trace pesticides in complicated matrices.

Magnetic sporopollenin supported polyaniline developed for removal of lead ions from wastewater: Kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic studies

This study evaluated the synthesis of novel binary functionaladsorbent based on sporopollenin, magnetic nanoparticles, and polyaniline to produce MSP-PANI. The MSP-PANI was applied to enhance uptake of lead ions (Pb²⁺) from wastewater samples. The functionalities, surface morphology, magnetic properties, and elemental composition of the newly synthesized nanocomposite were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), vibration sample magnetometer (VSM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. The experimental condition for the adsorption process was MSP/PANI ratio 1:1, pH ∼6, adsorbent dosage 40 mg, and contact time 90 min at room temperature. Under the proposed condition, lead ions removal were obtained as 83%, 88% and 95% for MSPE, PANI, and MSP/PANI, respectively. Based on the experimental and predicted data, the adsorption was corresponded to the psudo-second-order (R² = 0.999) kinetics model, and the adsorption equilibrium corresponded to the Langmuir model (R² = 0.996). Langmuir isotherm showed the maximum adsorption capacity of MSP-PANI for lead ions was 163 mg/g and followed the monolayer pattern. Hence, thermodynamic model under Van't Hoff equation suggested that the adsorption mechanism was physio-sorption with endothermic nature. Therefore, this research can help the researchers to use magnetic nanoparticles for lead removal in highly polluted areas.

Sporopollenin based materials as a versatile choice for the detoxification of environmental pollutants - A review

Before making the transfer to land, plants survive in water for millions of years to avoid the severe circumstances that prevail on lands, such as drought and UV radiation. All land plant spores are coated in sporopollenin, a substance that has developed to endow pollen and spore shells with exceptional, one-of-a-kind qualities. In a nutshell, sporopollenin-coated spores are a unique invention only seen in land plants. Sporopollenin, discovered in the outer exine layer of pollen walls, is a lipid and phenolic-based polymer with high carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen cross-linking. Products based on sporopollenin can remediate toxic pollutant contamination in the aquatic environment. This research and development are now underway. In this review, we show how sporopollenin-based adsorbents act in environmental challenges and their immense promise for this application via remarkable physical and chemical characteristics. A comparison is made of the benefits of various sporopollenin-modified structures. This strategy will further our understanding of how a biopolymer's structure can be accommodated to address emerging environmental challenges, revealing more about sporopollenin's dynamical nature.

Efficient remediation of chlorpyrifos pesticide from contaminated water by superparamagnetic adsorbent based on Arabic gum-grafted-polyamidoxime

A novel organic/inorganic biosorbent hydrogel nanocomposite based on Arabic Gum-grafted-polyamidoxime and CuFe₂O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (AG-g-PAO/CuFe₂O₄) was prepared in three steps. The prepared hydrogel nanocomposite was well characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), CHN, zeta potential, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. The adsorption efficiency of the AG-g-PAO/CuFe₂O₄ for removing an organophosphorus pesticide (OPP) (chlorpyrifos) from aqueous solutions was studied. Effect of different experimental conditions such as the pH of the solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration on adsorption efficiency was evaluated. The experimental adsorption data described well by the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacity (Q_max) of the prepared biosorbent for chlorpyrifos was found 769.23 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic data were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. It was suggested that the chlorpyrifos was adsorbed onto AG-g-PAO/CuFe₂O₄ hydrogel biosorbent mainly through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The result of adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the AG-g-PAO/CuFe₂O₄ can be excellently regenerated and reused after three sequential runs without a considerable decline in its adsorption performance.

Synthesis of new Zn-decorated metal-organic frameworks for enhanced removal of carcinogenic textile dye: equilibrium and kinetic modeling studies

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of Zn²⁺ decorated (adipic and terephthalic acid as linkers) piperazine-based metal-organic framework (P-MOFs) and their extraction behavior toward the Chicago sky blue (CSB) dye. The formation of Zn²⁺-decorated P-MOFs was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, BET surface area analysis and TGA. Adsorption behavior of the synthesized P-MOFs was explored through solid-phase adsorption (batch method) prior to UV-Vis spectrophotometric determination. Adsorption parameters, including adsorbent dosage, pH of solution, dye concentration, and time, were optimized. Excellent percentage removal of 94% and 95% for AP-Zn-MOF and TP-Zn-MOF, respectively, was achieved at pH 7.5. Kinetics studies indicated that the synthesized adsorbents AP-Zn-MOF and TP-Zn-MOF followed the pseudo-second-order rate model with R² value 0.9989. The Freundlich isotherm with high R² value as compared to Langmuir isotherm indicated that CSB adsorption for the synthesized MOFs follows multilayer adsorption.

Green sporopollenin supported cyanocalixarene based magnetic adsorbent for pesticides removal from water: Kinetic and equilibrium studies

In this study, magnetic sporopollenin supported cyanocalixarene (MSP-CyCalix) nanocomposite was synthesized and introduced as an adsorbent material for the removal of pesticides from aqueous media. MSP-CyCalix was characterized by different analytical techniques FTIR, SEM, EDX, BET, VSMand TEM. Chlorpyrifos and hexaconazole pesticides were chosen as model analytes solutions for testing the adsorption efficiency of MSP-CyCalix adsorbent. The adsorption results showed that the incorporated cyano functional groups significantly increased the chemical reactivity and adsorption capacity for pesticides. To obtain the highest possible performance, experimental parameters such as pH, salt, dosage and time were optimized. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms models showed that pesticide adsorption process was well fitted with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.88 mg g^-1 and 12.34 mg g^-1 and a removal efficiency of >90% for both pesticides. Lastly, MSP-CyCalix maintained a removal efficiency of >80% for ten cycles and 60% after the eleventh cycles of usage. The results proved that MSP-CyCalix nanocomposite can be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of pesticide residues from water.

Determination of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in bovine milk by dispersive micro-solid phase extraction based on the magnetic three-dimensional graphene-sporopollenin sorbent

In this research, a new magnetic sorbent material composed of three-dimensional graphene aerogel decorated with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles attached to hollow sporopollenin exine capsules was synthesized and applied for extraction of vitamin D₃ before HPLC-UV analysis. The adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, VSM, and zeta potential techniques. The important parameters of the extraction process, including adsorbent dosage, desorption conditions, adsorption time, pH, and salt concentration, were investigated. Under the optimized condition, the method analytical figures of merit were evaluated as follows: linear dynamic range, 10-500 μg L^-1; limit of detection, 3.01 μg L^-1; determination coefficient (R²), 0.9960; intra-day RSD, 5.28%; and inter-day RSD, 8.17%. The applicability of the method was assessed for the determination of vitamin D3 in different unfortified and fortified bovine milk samples, and the recoveries in the 71.8-113.3% range with the RSDs within 1.4-7.0% were obtained.

Chemical Vapour Deposition of MWCNT on Silica Coated Fe3O4 and Use of Response Surface Methodology for Optimizing the Extraction of Organophosphorus Pesticides from Water

Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was fixed onto the surface of a magnetic silica (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂) substrate via chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Acetylene gas was used as the carbon source and cobalt oxide as the catalyst. The chemical and physical characteristics of the materials were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy (RS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm. The synthesized Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-MWCNT nanocomposite was used as a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the preconcentration of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), specifically, azinphos methyl, chlorpyrifos, parathion, and malathion. The factors influencing the extraction efficiency such as pH, contact time, and adsorbent dosage were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) and desirability function. Linear response was obtained in the concentration range of 10–200 μg/L for the analytes with determination coefficients ranging between 0.9955 and 0.9977. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) were in the range of 0.004-0.150 μg/L and 0.013-0.499 μg/L, respectively. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-MWCNT was applied in the extraction and subsequent determination of OPPs in water samples from Vaal River and Vaal Dam with recoveries ranging from 84.0 to 101.4% (RSDs = 3.8–9.6%, n = 3) in Vaal River and 86.2 to 93.8% (RSDs = 2.9–10.4%, n = 3) in Vaal Dam. The obtained results showed that the newly synthesized Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-MWCNT nanocomposite can be an efficient adsorbent with good potential for the preconcentration and extraction of selected OPPs from aqueous media.

Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic study of pesticides removal from water using novel glucamine-calix[4]arene functionalized magnetic graphene oxide

A novel nanocomposite of MGO-NGC, composed of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (M), graphene oxide (GO), and N-methyl-d-glucamine functionalized calix[4]arene (NGC), was synthesized and applied as an effective adsorbent for the removal of two selected pesticides, namely hexaconazole and chlorpyrifos from water samples. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XRD. The main parameters affecting the adsorption process such as adsorbent dosage, pH of sample solution, salt effect, pesticide concentration, and adsorption time were investigated. The data from kinetic studies fitted well to the pseudo-second order kinetic model with R2 > 0.99. Among the isotherm models of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich, the Langmuir isotherm fitted well to the adsorption process and demonstrated the monolayer adsorption pattern of the pesticides. Moreover, high adsorption capacities of 78.74 and 93.46 mg g-1 were obtained for chlorpyrifos and hexaconazole, respectively. Thermodynamic and free energy data indicated the physisorption mechanism for the adsorption process. The new adsorbent can be employed as an efficient, environment friendly, and highly reusable alternative for the removal of chlorinated pesticides from aqueous media.

Magnetite-sporopollenin/graphene oxide as new preconcentration adsorbent for removal of polar organophosphorus pesticides in vegetables

In this study, a new magnetic adsorbent based on magnetite-sporopollenin/graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄-SP/GO) was successfully developed. The adsorbent was applied for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of three selected polar organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), namely, dimethoate, phenthoate, and phosphamidon, prior to gas chromatography analysis with electron capture detection (GC-μECD). The Fe₃O₄-SP/GO adsorbent combines the advantages of superior adsorption capability of the modified sporopollenin (SP) with graphene oxide (GO) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄) for easy isolation from sample solution. Several MSPE parameters were optimized. Under optimized conditions, excellent linearity (R² ≥ 0.9994) was achieved using matrix match calibration in the range of 0.1 to 500 ng mL^-1. The limit of detection (LOD) method (S/N = 3) was from 0.02 to 0.05 ng mL^-1. The developed Fe₃O₄-SP/GO MSPE method was successfully applied for the determination of these three polar OPPs in cucumber, long beans, bell pepper, and tomato samples. Good recoveries (81.0-120.0%) and good relative standard deviation (RSD) (1.4-7.8%, n = 3) were obtained for the spiked OPPs (1 ng mL^-1) from real samples. This study is beneficial for adsorptive removal of toxic pesticide compounds from vegetable samples.

Fe(III)-oxalate complex mediated phosphate released from diazinon photodegradation: Pathway signatures based on oxygen isotopes

The photodegradation of organophosphorus pesticides has an important influence on their fate and bioavailability in the water environment. In this study, the kinetics and mechanisms of diazinon photodegradation by Fe(III)-oxalate complex have been determined. Special attention was given to the pathway by which phosphate is released following diazinon photodegradation, as assessed by HPLC-ESI-Q/TOF-MS coupled with oxygen isotope. The results showed that diazinon was stable under dark treatment. However, the degradation of diazinon was observed in the UV-only, UV-Fe(III), and UV-Fe(III)-oxalate treatments. The degradation rate constant is the largest in the UV-Fe(III)-oxalate treatment and clearly influenced by the pH and Fe(III) / oxalate ratio. The hydroxyl radical (OH) was the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the UV-Fe(III)-oxalate complex treatment and the steady-state concentration of OH was 5.75 × 10^-14 M. The products analysis revealed that phosphate could be released during the photodegradation of diazinon; the intermediate products were diazonon, 2-hydroxydiazonon, hydroxydiazonon, hydrogen phosphorothioate, O,O-diethyl thiophosphate (DETP), diethyl phosphate (DEP) and pyrimidinol (IMP). Compound stable oxygen isotope analysis coupled to Q-TOF/MS revealed that the degradation of diazinon initiated by the P-O bond cleavage.

Fabrication of calixarene-grafted bio-polymeric magnetic composites for magnetic solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in water samples

Calixarene framework functionalized bio-polymeric magnetic composites (MSp-TDI-calix) were synthesized and utilized as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for the extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely indoprofen (INP), ketoprofen (KTP), ibuprofen (IBP) and fenoprofen (FNP), from environmental water samples. MSp-TDI-calix was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, EDX, VSM and BET analysis, and the results were compared with Sp-TDI and Sp-TDI-calix. To maximize the extraction performance of MSp-TDI-calix decisive MSPE affective parameters such as sorbent amount, extraction time, sample volume, type of organic eluent, volume of organic eluent, desorption time and pH were comprehensively optimized prior to HPLC-DAD determination. The analytical validity of the proposed MSPE method was evaluated under optimized conditions and the following figures of merit were acquired: linearity with good determination coefficient (R² ≥ 0.991) over the concentration range of 0.5–500 µg/L, limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.06–0.26 µg/L and limits of quantitation (LOQ) between 0.20–0.89 µg/L. Excellent reproducibility and repeatability under harsh environment with inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviations were obtained in the range of 2.5–3.2% and 2.4–3.9% respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for analysis of NSAIDs in tap water, drinking water and river water with recovery efficiency ranging from 88.1–115.8% with %RSD of 1.6–4.6%.

New sporopollenin-based β-cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic hybrid adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from water samples

A magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) procedure on the newly synthesized magnetic β-cyclodextrin functionalized with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) as a linker and further modified with bio-polymeric spores of sporopollenin (MSp-TDI-βCD), was developed for the extraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely, indoprofen (INP), ketoprofen (KTP), ibuprofen (IBP) and fenoprofen (FNP) from water samples prior to their HPLC-DAD determination. The newly synthesized MSp-TDI-βCD was comprehensibly characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, BET and VSM analyses. The separation of selected NSAIDs on MSp-TDI-βCD from aqueous solution was simply achieved by applying an external magnetic field via a permanent magnet. The MSPE parameters affecting extraction performance, i.e. sorbent dosage, sample volume, extraction and desorption time, type of organic eluent and volume and solution pH were investigated and optimized. The proposed method showed linear range between 0.5 and 500 ng ml-1, low limit of detection at S/N = 3 (0.16-0.37 ng ml-1) and limit of quantification at S/N = 10 (0.53-1.22 ng ml-1). The inter-day (n = 15) and intra-day (n = 5) precision for the proposed methods given by relative standard deviation (RSD%) was in the range of 2.5-4.0 and 2.1-5.5, respectively. The extraction recoveries of NSAIDs from environmental samples (tap, drinking and river water) ranged from 92.5% to 123.6%, with satisfactory precision (RSD% less than 12.4%).

Determination of three tetracyclines in bovine milk using magnetic solid phase extraction in tandem with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with HPLC

A novel analytical method namely magnetic solid phase extraction in tandem with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was developed and used for the extraction/preconcentration of tetracycline (TCN), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DC) from bovine milk sample before HPLC-UV analysis. The β-cyclodextrin functionalized silica-coated magnetic graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@GO-β-CD) was used as an adsorbent. The adsorbent was fully characterized using FT-IR, SEM, EDX and Zeta potential techniques. The effective parameters on the performance of the method such as extraction solvent type and volume, adsorbent amount, desorption solvent type and volume, disperser solvent type, desorption time, ionic strength and pH value were investigated. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were obtained in the ranges of 1.8-2.9 μg L^-1 and 6.1-9.7 μg L^-1, respectively. The linearity was in the range of 10.0-200.0 μg L^-1 with satisfactory determination coefficients (R²) higher than 0.9929 and a good precision (RSD < 8.8%). The recovery percentages for the analytes in real samples (bovine milk and water) were achieved in a range from 70.6 to 121.5%.

Synthesis of piperazine functionalized magnetic sporopollenin: a new organic-inorganic hybrid material for the removal of lead(II) and arsenic(III) from aqueous solution

The present work describes the successful functionalization/magnetization of bio-polymeric spores of Lycopodium clavatum (sporopollenin) with 1-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperazine. Analytical techniques, i.e., Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), were used to confirm the formation of 1-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperazine-functionalized magnetic sporopollenin (MNPs-Sp-HEP). The proposed adsorbent (MNPs-Sp-HEP) was used for the removal of noxious Pb(II) and As(III) metal ions from aqueous media through a batch-wise method. Different experimental parameters were optimized for the effective removal of selected noxious metal ions. Maximum adsorption capacity (q _m ) 13.36 and 69.85 mg g^-1 for Pb(II) and As(III), respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (ΔG°), entropy (ΔS°), and enthalpy (ΔH°) were also studied from the adsorption results and were used to elaborate the mechanism of their confiscation. The obtained results indicated that newly adsorbent can be successfully applied for the decontamination of noxious Pb(II) and As(III) from the aqueous environment.

Enhanced removal of phosphate and nitrate ions from aqueous media using nanosized lanthanum hydrous doped on magnetic graphene nanocomposite

A novel nanocomposite adsorbent based on nanosized lanthanum hydroxide doped onto magnetic reduced graphene oxide (MG@La) was synthesized and used for removal of phosphate and nitrate ions from river and sewage media. The composition, surface properties and morphology of the as prepared adsorbent were studied using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The influence of main parameters on the efficiency of removal process including adsorbent dosage, salt addition, solution pH, contact time, and concentration of the analytes were thoroughly investigated. The validity of the experimental process was checked by the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics models. The obtained data were well fitted to Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The developed adsorbent showed high adsorption capacities of 116.28 mg g^-1 and 138.88 mg g^-1 for phosphate and nitrate ions, respectively. Additionally, Langmuir isotherm and free energy were suggested monolayer pattern and physisorption mechanism for adsorption process, respectively. Finally, the field application of newly synthesized MG@La provided high removal efficiencies (74%-90%) for phosphate and nitrate ions in real river and sewage water samples.

Magnetic graphene coated inorganic-organic hybrid nanocomposite for enhanced preconcentration of selected pesticides in tomato and grape

The new magnetic graphene based hybrid silica-N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (MG@SiO₂-TMSPED) nanocomposite was synthesized via sol-gel process, and used as an effective adsorbent in magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of three selected pesticides followed by gas chromatography micro-electron capture detection (GC-μECD). The adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) techniques. The analytical validity of the developed method was evaluated under optimized conditions and the following figures of merit were obtained: linearity, 1-20μgkg^-1 with good determination coefficients (R²=0.995-0.999); limits of detection (LODs), 0.23-0.30μgkg^-1 (3×SD/m, n=3); and limits of quantitation (LOQ), 0.76-1.0μgkg^-1 (10×SD/m, n=3). The precision (RSD%) of the proposed MSPE method was studied based on intra-day (3.43-8.83%, n=3) and inter-day (6.68-8.37%, n=12) precisions. Finally, the adsorbent was applied to determination of pesticides in tomato and grape samples and good recoveries were obtained in the range from 82 to 113% (RSDs 5.1-8.1%, n=3).

New magnetic graphene-based inorganic-organic sol-gel hybrid nanocomposite for simultaneous analysis of polar and non-polar organophosphorus pesticides from water samples using solid-phase extraction

A new graphene-based tetraethoxysilane-methyltrimethoxysilane sol-gel hybrid magnetic nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS) was synthesised, characterized and successfully applied in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for simultaneous analysis of polar and non-polar organophosphorus pesticides from several water samples. The Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS nanocomposite was characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Separation, determination and quantification were achieved using gas chromatography coupled with micro electron capture detector. Adsorption capacity of the sorbent was calculated using Langmuir equation. MSPE was linear in the range 100-1000 pg mL^-1 for phosphamidon and dimethoate, and 10-100 pg mL^-1 for chlorpyrifos and diazinon, with limit of detection (S/N = 3) of 19.8, 23.7, 1.4 and 2.9 pg mL^-1 for phosphamidon, dimethoate, diazinon and chlorpyrifos, respectively. The LODs obtained is well below the maximum residual level (100 pg mL^-1) as set by European Union for pesticides in drinking water. Acceptable precision (%RSD) was achieved for intra-day (1.3-8.7%, n = 3) and inter-day (7.6-17.8%, n = 15) analyses. Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS showed high adsorption capacity (54.4-76.3 mg g^-1) for the selected OPPs. No pesticide residues were detected in the water samples analysed. Excellent extraction recoveries (83-105%) were obtained for the spiked OPPs from tap, river, lake and sea water samples. The newly synthesised Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS showed high potential as adsorbent for OPPs analysis.
