Investigating the Mobility-Compressibility Properties of Conjugated Polymers by the Contact Film Transfer Method with Prestrain

Up to now, researches on the mobility-stretchability of semiconducting polymers are extensively investigated, but little attention was  paid to their morphology and field-effect transistor characteristics under compressive strains, which is equally crucial in wearable electronic applications. In this work, a contact film transfer method is applied to evaluate the mobility-compressibility properties of conjugated polymers. A series of isoindigo-bithiophene conjugated polymers with symmetric carbosilane side chains (P(SiSi)), siloxane-terminated alkyl side chains (P(SiOSiO)), and combined asymmetric side chains (P(SiOSi)) are investigated. Accordingly, a compressed elastomer slab is used to transfer and compress the polymer films by releasing prestrain, and the morphology and mobility evolutions of these polymers are tracked. It is found that P(SiOSi) outperforms the other symmetric polymers including P(Si─Si) and P(SiO─SiO), having the ability to dissipate strain with its shortened lamellar spacing and orthogonal chain alignment. Notably, the mechanical durability of P(SiOSi) is also enhanced after consecutive compress-release cycles. In addition, the contact film transfer technique is demonstrated to be applicable to investigate the compressibility of different semiconducting polymers. These results demonstrate a comprehensive approach to understand the mobility-compressibility properties of semiconducting polymers under tensile and compressive strains.

Advantages of aggregation-induced luminescence microspheres compared with fluorescent microspheres in immunochromatography assay with sandwich format

Organic fluorescein dye-embedded fluorescent microspheres (FMs) are currently the most established commercially fluorescent markers, and they have been widely used to improve the sensitivity of immunochromatography assay (ICA). However, these FMs have natural defects, such as the aggregation-caused quenching effect and small Stokes shift, which are not conducive to improving the detection performance of ICA. Herein, two green emitted FMs, namely aggregation-induced emission FMs (AIEFMs) and fluorescein isothiocyanate FMs (FITCFMs), were prepared by swelling the AIE luminogens and FITC dyes into the carboxyl group-modified polystyrene microspheres. The average diameters of AIEFMs and FITCFMs were 350 and 450 nm, respectively. Compared with FITCFMs, the AIEFMs exhibited stronger fluorescence intensity and a larger Stokes shift. These two FMs were used as the labeling markers of ICA for procalcitonin (PCT) detection with the sandwich format. Among them, AIEFM-ICA showed dynamic linear detection of PCT from 7.6 pg mL^-1 to 125 ng mL^-1 with the limit of detection (LOD) at 3.8 pg mL^-1. These values were remarkably superior to those of FITCFM-ICA (linear range from 61 pg mL^-1 to 62.5 ng mL^-1 and LOD value at 60 pg mL^-1). Furthermore, the average recoveries of the intra- and inter-assays of AIEFM-ICA ranged from 86% to 112%, with coefficients of variation ranging from 1.2% to 8.8%, indicating accuracy and precision for PCT quantitative detection. Additionally, the reliability of the developed AIEFM-ICA was further assessed by analyzing 30 real serum samples from systemic inflammatory response by infectious diseases, and the results showed good agreement with the chemiluminescence immunoassay. In conclusion, compared with traditional FITCFMs, green emitted AIEFMs as a novel fluorescent label, exhibits greater potential to enhance the detection performance of the ICA platform.

An oroxylin A-loaded aggregation-induced emission active polymeric system greatly increased the antitumor efficacy against squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a usually responds poorly to treatment suffers from poor therapeutic benefits while oroxylin A (OA) is a promising flavonoid with high anticancer efficacy against various cancer types. Here in our study, in order to reveal the potential of OA based drug delivery systems (DDSs) in the treatment of SCC, we firstly revealed that OA had a certain pharmacodynamic effect on skin SCC (A431 cells). Afterwards, OA was loaded into a newly synthesized aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polymer to construct OA-loaded PDots for the first time. Our results revealed that OA-loaded PDots showed preferable drug loading and enhanced stability. Moreover, the DDS was also capable of self-illumination in the aggregate state to reveal the uptake profile. Most importantly, the DDS showed much more elevated anticancer benefits than free OA in vitro and advanced tumor targetability in vivo, suggesting that it might be a promising system against SCC.

Pyrene-Based Nonwoven Fabric with Tunable Fluorescence Properties by Employing the Aggregation-Caused Quenching Effect

Conventional aromatic compounds tend to exhibit the formation of sandwich-shaped excimers and exciplexes between their excited and ground states at high concentrations or in their aggregated states, causing their fluorescence to weaken or disappear due to the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. This limits their applications in concentrated solutions or solid materials. Herein, for the first time, ACQ-based pyrene (Py) units are covalently connected to the surface of polyethylene/polypropylene nonwoven fabric (PE/PP NWF) via electron beam preradiation-induced graft polymerization followed by chemical modification. The matrix can be considered a solid solvent and Py units as a solid solute, such that the amount of Py units can be controlled by varying the reaction time. The obtained fluorescent fabric not only exhibits remarkable fluorescence properties with high fluorescence intensity, high quantum yield (>90%), and excellent fluorescence stability after laundering or in harsh chemical environments, but the fluorescence color and intensity, quantum yield, and lifetime can also be regulated by employing the ACQ effect. Additionally, the as-prepared fluorescent fabric can effectively distinguish common monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via a simple fluorescence response test.

Dual resonance energy transfer in triple-component polymer dots to enhance electrochemiluminescence for highly sensitive bioanalysis

Polymer dots (Pdots) have become a type of attractive illuminant for electrochemiluminescence (ECL). However, the low ECL efficiency severely limits their practicability. Here, we design a dual intramolecular resonance energy transfer (RET) mechanism with newly synthesized triple-component Pdots to achieve great ECL enhancement. This mechanism efficiently shortens the path of energy transmission, thus greatly promoting the ECL amplification by 380 and 31 times compared to systems with no and single RET, and results in a relative ECL efficiency of 23.1% (vs. 1 mM Ru(bpy)32+). Using metal-organic frameworks to carry the triple-component Pdots, a highly luminescent probe is proposed. By integrating the probe with target-mediated enzymatic circulation amplification and DNA arrays, a highly sensitive ECL imaging method is designed for simultaneous visual analysis of two kinds of proteins, mucin 1 and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, on living cells, which exhibited linear ranges of 1 pg mL-1 to 5 ng mL-1 and 5 pg mL-1 to 10 ng mL-1 with limits of detection of 1 pg mL-1 and 5 pg mL-1, respectively. The proposed strategy showed promising application in bioanalysis.

Core-shell-shell cytocompatible polymer dot-based particles with near-infrared emission and enhanced dispersion stability

Polymer dots (PDs) are promising fluorescent probes for biomaterials applications. Here, novel cytocompatible composite PD particles have been synthesised with a core-shell-shell morphology. The particles show near-infrared emission, improved fluorescent brightness and enhanced colloidal stability compared to pure PDs. The particles also show non-radiative resonance energy transfer (NRET) with a model dye.

Electrochemiluminescent resonance energy transfer of polymer dots for aptasensing

This work designed a three-component polymer for the preparation of polymer dots (Pdots). The polymer contained 9-(diphenylmethylene)-9H-fluorene (DPF), 9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene (DOF) and 1,1'-binaphthyl moieties, and was synthesized via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki reaction. It exhibited obvious yellow-colored aggregation-induced emission (AIE) for fluorescence enhancement at 543nm via an intramolecular fluorescence resonance energy transfer from DOF moiety to DPF moiety. The Pdots prepared by nanoprecipitation could be conveniently cast on electrode surface and showed a stable anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emission in the presence of triethylamine as a co-reactant. The ECL emission could be effectively quenched by rhodamine B via resonance energy transfer, which led to an "off-on" switch for the design of ECL sensing methodology. Using Pb²⁺ as a target model, an ECL aptasensor for the detection of trace Pb²⁺ was proposed, which showed a linear range of 100pM to 1.0μM with a detection limit down to 38.0pM This work demonstrated the first Pdots prepared with AIE-active polymer for highly efficient ECL sensing.
