Recent advances of magnetic chitosan hydrogel: Preparation, properties and applications

Magnetic chitosan hydrogels are organic-inorganic composite material with the characteristics of both magnetic materials and natural polysaccharides. Due to its biocompatibility, low toxicity and biodegradability, chitosan, a natural polymer has been widely used for preparing magnetic hydrogels. The addition of magnetic nanoparticles to chitosan hydrogels not only improves their mechanical strength, but also endows them with magnetic thermal effects, targeting capabilities, magnetically-sensitive release characteristics, easy separation and recovery, thus enabling them to be used in various applications including drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetothermal therapy, and adsorption of heavy metals and dyes. In this review, the physical and chemical crosslinking methods of chitosan hydrogels and the methods for binding magnetic nanoparticles in hydrogel networks are first introduced. Subsequently, the properties of magnetic chitosan hydrogels were summarized including mechanical properties, self-healing, pH responsiveness and properties in magnetic fields. Finally, the potential for further technological and applicative advancements of magnetic chitosan hydrogels is discussed.

Tuning Protein Hydrogel Mechanics through Modulation of Nanoscale Unfolding and Entanglement in Postgelation Relaxation

Globular folded proteins are versatile nanoscale building blocks to create biomaterials with mechanical robustness and inherent biological functionality due to their specific and well-defined folded structures. Modulating the nanoscale unfolding of protein building blocks during network formation (in situ protein unfolding) provides potent opportunities to control the protein network structure and mechanics. Here, we control protein unfolding during the formation of hydrogels constructed from chemically cross-linked maltose binding protein using ligand binding and the addition of cosolutes to modulate protein kinetic and thermodynamic stability. Bulk shear rheology characterizes the storage moduli of the bound and unbound protein hydrogels and reveals a correlation between network rigidity, characterized as an increase in the storage modulus, and protein thermodynamic stability. Furthermore, analysis of the network relaxation behavior identifies a crossover from an unfolding dominated regime to an entanglement dominated regime. Control of in situ protein unfolding and entanglement provides an important route to finely tune the architecture, mechanics, and dynamic relaxation of protein hydrogels. Such predictive control will be advantageous for future smart biomaterials for applications which require responsive and dynamic modulation of mechanical properties and biological function.

Influence of Centrifugation Cycles of Natural Rubber Latex on Final Properties of Uncrosslinked Deproteinized Natural Rubber

Natural rubber latex (NRL) is a polymer (blend) extracted from the milky sap of para rubber trees. Due to being a natural biopolymer, NRL contains various proteins that may be allergenic to humans when in skin contact. Attempts have been made to use deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) instead of impure NRL, and the final properties of these two types of rubber tend to differ. Thus, the correlations between their chemistry and properties are of focal interest in this work. DPNR was prepared by incubating NRL with urea, followed by aqueous washing/centrifugation. The physical, mechanical, and dynamic properties of incubated NRL before and after washing/centrifugation were examined to distinguish its influences from those of incubation with urea. According to the findings, the proteins, phospholipids, and chain entanglements were responsible for natural polymer networks formed in the NR. Although the proteins were largely removed from the latex by incubation, the properties of high ammonia natural rubber (HANR) were still maintained in its DPNR form, showing that other network linkages dominated over those contributed by the proteins. In the incubated latex, the naturally occurring linkages were consistently reduced with the number of wash cycles.

Influence of ionic liquids on the chain dynamics and enthalpy relaxation of poly(methyl methacrylate)

Imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with various alkyl chain lengths on the cations ([C_nmim]⁺, n = 2, 4 and 8) and different combined anions ([TFSI]^- and [PF₆]^-) were blended with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the effects of the IL structure on the chain dynamics of PMMA were experimentally investigated by rheology and DSC measurements combined with a simulation method. The results indicate that the interaction between PMMA and ILs becomes stronger as the alkyl chain length on the imidazolium ring increases or the anion changes from [PF₆]^- to [TFSI]^-. As a result, a higher critical entanglement concentration and a larger entanglement molecular weight of PMMA were found in [C₈mim][TFSI] due to the stiffer conformation. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations further demonstrated stronger interactions between PMMA and ILs with longer cationic alkyl chain lengths or [TFSI]^- anions, which showed smaller Flory-Huggins interaction parameters and larger radii of gyration, R_g. However, the larger size of alkyl chains or [TFSI]^- anions produced a larger free volume in the system as evidenced by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), which competed with the molecular interaction and dominated the segmental motion. Therefore, a lower T_g and accelerated segmental relaxation were observed. Compared to alkyl chain length, the effect of anions on the interactions between ILs and PMMA is more prominent.

Optimization of Anisotropic Crystalline Structure of Molecular Necklace-like Polyrotaxane for Tough Piezoelectric Elastomer

While piezoelectric materials are applied in various fields, they generally exhibit poor mechanical toughness. To increase the applicability of these, their mechanical properties need to be improved. In this study, a tough piezoelectric polyrotaxane (PRX) elastomer was developed by blending PRX samples of two different lengths, formed using 10K and 35K poly(ethylene glycol), to align dipole moments for optimization of the piezoelectricity characteristics. The effects of the blending ratio on the crystalline structure of the obtained PRX elastomer were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the PRX elastomer were evaluated based on its polarization hysteresis loop and voltage generation characteristics, respectively. The PRX elastomer formed by using a ratio of 3:1 (ePR10k₇₅35k₂₅) exhibited a long-range-ordered anisotropic crystalline structure, resulting in a large polarization (P_r) value. As a result, ePR10k₇₅35k₂₅ showed greatly enhanced piezosensitivity against the mechanical vibrations generated by respiratory signals.

Insights into the Role of Polymer Conformation on the Cutoff Size of Carbon Molecular Sieving Membranes for Hydrogen Separation and Its Novel Pore Size Detection Technology

In this study, three polymer precursor conformations, dilute, semi-dilute, and concentrated, were used to fabricate carbon molecular sieving (CMS) membranes via a fixed carbonization protocol. The effects of the precursor conformation on the microstructure of the resultant CMS membranes were characterized by Raman analysis. Their ability to separate light gases, such as H₂/CH₄ and H₂/N₂, was assessed with a single-gas system. Additionally, a novel method was proposed to detect the cutoff size of the CMS membranes created in this study. The method combined high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and a focused ion beam (FIB) system. Finally, due to the semi-dilute solution's denser polymer chains and lack of severe polymer entanglement, highly graphited CMS membranes with excellent gas separation performance were successfully synthesized using a semi-dilute polyetherimide dope solution. Interlayer distances in the carbon matrix were visualized and measured using our novel probing tool (HR-TEM and FIB) and software. The CMS membrane fabricated with a semi-dilute dope exhibited the best gas separation performance of the tested membranes. It had the most ordered carbon sheet orientation and exhibited a superior selectivity of H₂/CH₄ = 293 with a hydrogen permeability of 1138.7 Barrer, far surpassing the reported permselectivity of other membranes. We believe that the high H₂/CH₄ selectivity presented here is unprecedented for CMS membranes reported in the literature.

Hydrogen bonding and thermoplastic elastomers - a nice couple with temperature-adjustable mechanical properties

Styrene-butadiene copolymers are modified with varying fractions of benzoic acid moieties being able to perform hydrogen bonding. This is done by using a simple synthetic approach which utilizes click chemistry. Temperature-dependent dynamic mechanical properties are studied, and it turns out that even the apparently rather simple hydrogen bonding motif has a marked impact on the material properties due to the fact that it facilitates the formation of a supramolecular polymer network. Besides a glass transition, the investigated functionalized copolymers exhibit a second endothermic transition, known as a quasi-melting. This is related to the opening of the hydrogen bonding complexes. Additionally to dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectroscopy and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) are used to understand the structure-property relationships.

Photopolymer Electrolytes for Sustainable, Upscalable, Safe, and Ambient-Temperature Sodium-Ion Secondary Batteries

The first example of a photopolymerized electrolyte for a sodium-ion battery is proposed herein. By means of a preparation process free of solvents, catalysts, purification steps, and separation steps, it is possible to obtain a three-dimensional polymeric network capable of efficient sodium-ion transport. The thermal properties of the resulting solid electrolyte separator, characterized by means of thermogravimetric and calorimetric techniques, are excellent for use in sustainable energy systems conceived for safe large-scale grid storage. The photopolymerized electrolyte shows a wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.8 V versus Na/Na(+) along with the highest ionic conductivity (5.1 mS cm(-1) at 20 °C) obtained in the field of Na-ion polymer batteries so far and stable long-term constant-current charge/discharge cycling. Moreover, the polymeric networks are also demonstrated for the in situ fabrication of electrode/electrolyte composites with excellent interfacial properties, which are ideal for all-solid-state, safe, and easily upscalable device assembly.
