Use of Co3O4 nanoparticles with different surface morphologies for removal of toxic substances and investigation of antimicrobial activities via in vivo studies

Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were formed using hydrothermal synthesis method and various surfactants to study the effect of changing surface morphology on catalytic and antibacterial activities. FT-IR, TEM, SEM, BET, XRD, and XPS analyses were performed to characterize the NPs. It was observed that as the morphology of Co3O4 changes, it creates differences in the reduction efficiency of organic dyes and p-nitrophenol (p-NP), which are toxic to living organisms and widely used in industry. The reaction rate constants (Kapp) for Co3O4-urea, Co3O4-ed, and Co3O4-NaOH in the reduction of p-NP were found to be 1.86 × 10-2 s-1, 1.83 × 10-2 s-1, and 2.4 × 10-3 s-1, respectively. In the presence of Co3O4-urea catalyst from the prepared nanoparticles, 99.29% conversion to p-aminophenol (p-AP) was observed, while in the presence of the same catalyst, 98.06% of methylene blue (MB) was removed within 1 h. The antibacterial activity of Co3O4 particles was compared with five standard antibiotics for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The results obtained indicate that the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized Co3O4 particles has a remarkable inhibitory effect on the growth of various pathogenic microorganisms. The current work could be an innovative and beneficial search for both biomedical and wastewater treatment applications.

Ag2O-adorned ZnO nanostructures: cooperative and sustainable nanomaterial system for effective reduction and mineralization of hazardous water pollutants

Organic water pollutants like nitroaromatics and synthetic dyes are causing serious threats to water. Ever-growing urban and industrial activities along with population explosion are rapidly contributing severe level of water contamination. Semiconducting nanomaterial-based photocatalysis has been proven to be an effective process for degradation of organic water pollutants. In the current study, visible light active Ag₂O-adorned ZnO nanostructures were fabricated by a simple two-step hydrothermal method and the prepared nanostructures were utilized for the photocatalytic mineralization of rhodamine B (RhB) dye with visible light radiation. The catalytic potential of as-synthesized nanostructures was also investigated for the reduction of nitroaromatics (4-NP and 4-NA) and RhB dye in the presence of NaBH₄. The Ag₂O-adorned ZnO nanostructures prepared with 5% of silver nitrate denoted as ZnO/Ag₂O (5%) demonstrated stupendous photomineralization activity against RhB dye as almost 100% degradation of RhB dye was achieved within 100 min of reaction time at pH = 6. The kinetic study revealed that the degradation reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics and the kinetic rate constant (k) of photodecolorization reaction for optimal catalyst was calculated to be 61.4 × 10^-3 min^-1. The nanostructures revealed excellent recyclability and photostability as 95% activity of the catalyst was preserved even after the fifth cyclic run. The catalytic reduction of the 4-NP, 4-NA, and RhB dye was completed in 21, 12, and 40 min, respectively, in the presence of ZnO/Ag₂O (5%) and NaBH₄ solution. The kinetic rate constant values for the reduction reactions were determined to be 229.6 × 10^-3, 454.2 × 10^-3, and 105.5 × 10^-3 min^-1 for 4-NP, 4-NA, and RhB dye, respectively. Thus, the obtained results suggest that the components of the prepared nanosystem help in mutually strengthening the catalytic and photocatalytic abilities of each other, indicating the development of a cooperative and sustainable nanomaterial system in the current study.

Recovery/Reuse of Heterogeneous Supported Spent Catalysts

The rapid separation and efficient recycling of catalysts after a catalytic reaction are considered important requirements along with the high catalytic performances. In this view, although heterogeneous catalysis is generally less efficient if compared to the homogeneous type, it is generally preferred since it benefits from the easy recovery of the catalyst. Recycling of heterogeneous catalysts using traditional methods of separation such as extraction, filtration, vacuum distillation, or centrifugation is tedious and time-consuming. They are uneconomic processes and, hence, they cannot be carried out in the industrial scale. For these limitations, today, the research is devoted to the development of new methods that allow a good separation and recycling of catalysts. The separation process should follow a procedure economically and technically feasible with a minimal loss of the solid catalyst. The aim of this work is to provide an overview about the current trends in the methods of separation/recycling used in the heterogeneous catalysis.

MOFs-derived magnetic C@Cu-Ni bimetal particles: An efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol degradation

In this study, magnetic Cu and Ni bimetallic particles embedded carbon sheets, namely as C@Cu-Ni, was derived via calcining a mixture of Cu-MOFs and Ni-MOFs (mass ratio = 4:6) under N₂ protection and served as a catalyst for the degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) by peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results showed that more than 98.5% of 2,4,6-TCP (10 mg L^-1) was rapidly decomposed at initial pH = 5, PMS = 1 mM and catalyst dosage = 0.1 g L^-1 within 30 min, accompanied by 42.47% removal of total organic carbon (TOC). This fully confirmed that C@Cu-Ni possessed excellent catalytic performance for PMS activation. The radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigation testified that the reactive oxygen species (ROS) included SO₄^•-, ^•OH, O₂^•- radicals and singlet oxygen (¹O₂), which were responsible for the rapid degradation of 2,4,6-TCP. Among them, O₂^•-and ¹O₂ played a decisive role. Cyclic voltammograms (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that C@Cu-Ni material possessed superior electrical conductivity and electron transfer, improving its catalytic activity. What is more, C@Cu-Ni displayed excellent stability and could be consecutively used for five times without any decline of catalytic performance. The main intermediates of the 2,4,6-TCP degradation were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and possible pathways of 2,4,6-TCP degradation were further proposed. The extraordinary stability and superior catalytic activity of C@Cu-Ni coupled with its easy separation from wastewater due to magnetism suggest that the newly synthesized material may offer a promising alternative approach to efficiently degrade organic pollutants by PMS.

Improved performance of immobilized laccase on Fe3O4@C-Cu2+ nanoparticles and its application for biodegradation of dyes

An effective strategy for enhancement of catalytic activity and stability of immobilized laccase via metal affinity adsorption on Fe₃O₄@C-Cu²⁺ nanoparticles was developed, which involved the fabrication of hydroxyl and carboxyl functionalized Fe₃O₄@C nanoparticles via a simple hydrothermal process and the subsequent chelation with Cu²⁺ for the immobilization of laccase under a mild condition. Our results revealed that the Fe₃O₄@C-Cu²⁺ nanoparticles possess a high loading amount of bovine serum albumin (BSA, 436 mg/g support) and laccase activity recovery of 82.3 % after immobilization. Laccase activity assays indicated that thermal and pH stabilities, and resistances to organic solvents and metal ions of the immobilized laccase were relatively higher than those of the free enzyme. The immobilized laccase maintained more than 61 % of its original activity after 10 consecutive reuses. Most importantly, the immobilized laccase possessed excellent degradation of diverse synthetic dyes. The degradation rates of malachite green (MG), brilliant green (BG), crystal violet (CV), azophloxine, Procion red MX-5B, and reactive blue 19 (RB19) was approximately 99, 93, 79, 88, 75 and 81 (%) in the first cycle. Even after 10 consecutive reuses, the removal efficiencies of the six dyes were found to be 94, 80, 71, 78, 60, and 65 (%), respectively.

Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) Templated 2D Nanofibrous Mats: A Platform toward Practical Applications for Dye Removal and Bacterial Disinfection

The fabrication of polymeric nanofibers and its potential versatility instigated to foster smart hybrid nanomaterials for the removal of environmental pollutants. In this pursuit, in this research work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based two-dimensional (2D) nanofibrous mats with polyethyleneimine (PEI)/Fe and quaternary ammonium (QA)/Fe as hybrid fillers were prepared by the electrospinning process for the effective dye removal and bacterial disinfection. The characteristics of the fabricated nanomaterials were extensively explored by several analytical techniques such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Magnetic and thermal properties were investigated by superconducting quantum interference device and thermogravimetric measurements. The kinetic and isothermal models affirmed the adsorption behavior of the PAN-PEI/Fe nanofibers, and further regenerative studies substantiated the sustainability of the mats for the removal of industrial dye effluents. Subsequently, the magnetic-QA-loaded PAN nanofiber mats exhibited bactericidal killing efficacy of 99 and 89.5% in both Staphylococcus aureus and green fluorescence protein expressing Escherichia coli bacterial models evaluated from the conventional quantitative bacterial colony-counting assay. Disk diffusion method and microscopic investigations corroborated the disinfection efficacy with zone of inhibitions of ∼23 and 33 mm, respectively. Interestingly, in vitro cell culture studies conducted in BHK-21 and NIH 3T3 cell lines demonstrated the cytocompatibility, and the in vivo toxicity investigations using the zebrafish models necessitated the real-time application of these nanofibrous mats. Therefore, the comprehensive study of the fabricated PAN-templated functionalized 2D nanofibrous mats affirmed to be competent for the remediation of industrial dye effluents and bacteria in water bodies.
