State-of-the-Art Review on Amorphous Carbon Nanotubes: Synthesis, Structure, and Application

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have rapidly received increasing attention and great interest as potential materials for energy storage and catalyst fields, which is due to their unique physicochemical and electrical properties. With continuous improvements in fabrication routes, CNTs have been modified with various types of materials, opening up new perspectives for research and state-of-the-art technologies. Amorphous CNTs (aCNTs) are carbon nanostructures that are distinctively different from their well-ordered counterparts, such as single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs, respectively), while the atoms in aCNTs are grouped in a disordered, crystalline/non-crystalline manner. Owing to their unique structure and properties, aCNTs are attractive for energy storage, catalysis, and aerospace applications. In this review, we provide an overview of the synthetic routes of aCNTs, which include chemical vapor deposition, catalytic pyrolysis, and arc discharge. Detailed morphologies of aCNTs and the systematic elucidation of tunable properties are also summarized. Finally, we discuss the future perspectives as well as associated challenges of aCNTs. With this review, we aim to encourage further research for the widespread use of aCNTs in industry.

A reactive molecular dynamics study on the mechanical properties of a recently synthesized amorphous carbon monolayer converted into a nanotube/nanoscroll

Recently, laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition has been used to synthesize a free-standing, continuous, and stable monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC). MAC is a pure carbon structure composed of randomly distributed five, six, seven, and eight atom rings, which is different from that of disordered graphene. More recently, amorphous MAC-based nanotubes (a-CNT) and nanoscrolls (a-CNS) were proposed. In this work, we have investigated (through fully atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations) the mechanical properties and sublimation points of pristine and a-CNT and a-CNS. The results showed that a-CNT and a-CNS have distinct elastic properties and fracture patterns compared to those of their pristine analogs. Both a-CNT and a-CNS presented a non-elastic regime before their total rupture, whereas the CNT and CNS underwent a direct conversion to fractured forms after a critical strain threshold. The critical strain values for the fracture of the a-CNT and a-CNS are about 30% and 25%, respectively, and they are lower than those of the corresponding CNT and CNS cases. Although less resilient to tension, the amorphous tubular structures have similar thermal stability in relation to the pristine cases with sublimation points of 5500 K, 6300 K, 5100 K, and 5900 K for a-CNT, CNT, a-CNS, and CNS, respectively. An interesting result is that the nanostructure behavior is substantially different depending on whether it is a nanotube or a nanoscroll, thus indicating that the topology plays an important role in defining its elastic properties.

Synthesis of Hybrid Carbon Materials Consisting of N-Doped Microporous Carbon and Amorphous Carbon Nanotubes

The N-doped hybrid carbon materials containing amorphous carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) were obtained by free growth of a polymer at 200 °C. The improvement of electrical conductivity was achieved by a final carbonization at 600–800 °C under the flow of nitrogen. The microstructure of ACNT/N-doped hybrids was characterized using a transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffusion. Furthermore, their elemental composition was measured using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and an elemental analyzer. The experimental results indicated that the ACNTs had a diameter in the range of 40–60 nm and the N-doped carbon background contained nitrogen atoms in most bonded pyrrolic-N and quaternary-N groups. The results revealed that the microstructure of the as-grown nanotubes, prepared by the proposed method, is mainly amorphous. This technique introduces the advantages of low cost and process simplicity, which may redeem some drawbacks of the methods commonly used in ACNT synthesis.

Amorphous Carbon Nanotubes-Nickel Oxide Nanoflower Hybrids: A Low Cost Energy Storage Material

Amorphous carbon nanotubes (a-CNTs) have been synthesized by a simple low-temperature process and have been grafted with chemically synthesized nickel oxide microflowers with different concentrations. The phase and morphology of the as-prepared pure and hybrid samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Thermal properties of the samples were estimated by using thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The optical properties of the sample were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopic, Raman spectroscopic, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopic analysis. The electrochemical performance of all hybrid samples has been done in detail for different scan rates as well as from charge-discharge analysis. It has been seen that because of the nickel oxide grafting, the electrochemical performance of pure a-CNTs gets enhanced significantly. The value of the specific capacitance of the hybrid comes out to be around 120 F/g for the best sample, which is almost 12 times higher compared to that of the pure a-CNTs. The result has been explained in terms of change in effective surface area as well as change in conductivity of the hybrid samples.
