Abstract
In the present study, glycerol was oxidized by photocatalysis to glyceraldehyde, formaldehyde, and formic acid. Copper-doped TiO2 was synthesized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly approach and it was used as catalyst during the glycerol photo-oxidation reactions. The prepared mesoporous material exhibited high specific surface area (242 m2/g) and band gap energy reduction of 2.55 eV compared to pure titania (3.2 eV) by the synthesis method due to the presence of copper cations (Cu2+ identified by XPS). The catalyst showed only anatase crystalline phase with nanocrystals around 8 nm and irregular agglomerates below 100 μm. The selectivity and formation rate of the products were favored towards formaldehyde and glyceraldehyde. The variables studied were catalyst amount, reaction temperature, and initial glycerol concentration. The response surface analysis was used to evaluate the effect of the variables on the product’s concentration. The optimized conditions were 0.4 g/L catalyst, 0.1 mol/L glycerol, and temperature 313.15 K. The response values under optimal conditions were 3.23, 8.17, and 1.15 mM for glyceraldehyde, formaldehyde, and formic acid, respectively. A higher selectivity towards formaldehyde was observed when visible light was used as the radiation source. This study is useful to evaluate the best reaction conditions towards value-added products during the oxidation of glycerol by photocatalysis using Cu/TiO2.

Abstract
Here, we report an efficient catalytic process that operates on a bi-metallic ZSM-5 supported catalyst (0.1Ga-1Zn/ZSM-5) for 100% carbon conversion of glycerol to produce 71.4C% liquid fuel-stock possessing a high concentration of alkyl-aromatics and octane potential (>97 RON) for fuel applications, achieved and reported for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the H2-rich (36 mol%) gas stream produced as a byproduct is attractive for green fuel applications. The process adds up to an ∼80% increase in the value addition of bio-glycerol, which improves the overall fuel yield of the biodiesel production process towards improved atom efficiency and process economy.

Abstract
Electrocatalysis plays a vital role in energy conversion and storage in modern society. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a highly attractive approach to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity with solar energy. LSPR excitation can induce the transfer of hot electrons and holes, electromagnetic field enhancement, lattice heating, resonant energy transfer and scattering, in turn boosting a variety of electrocatalytic reactions. Although the LSPR-mediated electrocatalysis has been investigated, the underlying mechanism has not been well explained. Moreover, the efficiency is strongly dependent on the structure and composition of plasmonic metals. In this review, the currently proposed mechanisms for plasmon-mediated electrocatalysis are introduced and the preparation methods to design supported plasmonic nanostructures and related electrodes are summarized. In addition, we focus on the characterization strategies used for verifying and differentiating LSPR mechanisms involved at the electrochemical interface. Following that are highlights of representative examples of direct plasmonic metal-driven and indirect plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic reactions. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion on the remaining challenges and future opportunities for coupling LSPR with electrocatalysis.

Abstract
Direct attachment of gold nanoparticles to a green support without the use of an external reducing agent and using it for removing toxic pollutants from wastewater, i. e., reduction of nitroarene to amine, are described. A novel approach involving the reduction of gold by the jute plant (Corchorus genus) stem-based (JPS) support itself to form nanoparticles (AuNPs) to be used as a catalytic system ('dip-catalyst') and its catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of series of nitroarenes in aqueous media are presented. AuNPs/JPS catalyst was characterized using SEM, UV-Vis, FTIR, TEM, XPS, and ICP-OES. Confined area elemental mapping exhibits uniform and homogeneous distribution of AuNPs on the support surface. TEM shows multi-faceted AuNPs in the range of 20-30 nm. The reactivity of AuNPs/JPS for the transfer hydrogenation of nitroarene as well as hydrogenation of quinoline under molecular H2 pressure was evaluated. Sodium borohydride, when used as the hydrogen source, demonstrates a high catalytic efficiency in the transfer hydrogenation reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Quinoline is quantitatively and chemoselectively hydrogenated to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (py-THQ) using molecular hydrogen. Reusability studies show that AuNPs are stable on the support surface and their selectivity is not affected.

Abstract
The photo-driven oxidation of organic molecules into corresponding high-value-added products has become a promising method in chemical synthesis. This strategy can drive thermodynamically non-spontaneous reactions and achieve challenging thermocatalytic processes under ambient conditions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are not only significant intermediates for producing target products via photoinduced oxidation reactions but also contribute to the creation of sustainable chemical processes. Here, the latest advances in heterogeneous photo-driven oxidation reactions involving ROS are summarized. The major types of ROS and their generation are introduced, and the behaviors of various ROS involved in photo-driven processes are reviewed in terms of the formation of different bonds. Emphasis is placed on unraveling the reaction mechanisms of ROS and establishing strategies for their regulation, and the remaining challenges and perspectives are summarized and analyzed. This Review is expected to provide an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of ROS involved in photo-driven oxidation processes as an important foundation for the design of efficient catalysts. Clarifying the role of ROS in oxidation reactions has important scientific significance for improving the atomic and energy efficiency of reactions in practical applications.

Abstract
In this paper, photocatalytic production of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) from glycerol in acetonitrile on TiO2 was investigated. HPLC-MS analysis showed that glycerol was converted to DHA, glyceraldehyde (GAD), glyceric acid and several other chemicals. Using acetonitrile as the reaction medium instead of water not only provided a more selective process for production of DHA but also increased the glycerol conversion. After 300 min, with 1 g L−1 catalyst loading and 4 mM initial glycerol concentration, glycerol conversion and DHA selectivity were 96.8% and 17.8% in acetonitrile compared to 36.1% and 14.7% in water, respectively. The half-life of glycerol decreased by a factor of 6.2, from 467 min to 75 min, by changing the solvent from water to acetonitrile. Experiments using biodiesel-derived crude glycerol verified the effectiveness of the proposed process for the photocatalytic production of DHA from crude glycerol. A mechanism was proposed to explain the higher selectivity towards DHA over GAD in this process. Photocatalytic conversion of glycerol and selectivity for dihydroxyacetone production was increased by using acetonitrile as the reaction medium.![]()

Abstract
In this paper, a series of Cu-Zr mixed metal oxide-supported Au catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation and evaluated for selective oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) in base-free conditions. The best catalytic performance was obtained with DHA selectivity of up to 95% and yield of 70% in 4 h, 50 °C and PO2 = 0.2 MPa over the Au/Cu0.95Zr0.05 and Au/Cu0.9Zr0.1 catalysts. Combined with the characterization results of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and CO2 temperature programmed desorption, it was proposed that the content of Au0, the size of Au, and the basicity of the catalyst affected the glycerol conversion and DHA selectivity. After the catalyst was recycled four times, the glycerol conversion decreased by about 14% which might result from the carbon deposition or the byproduct adsorption and the agglomeration of Au particle.

Abstract
Abstract
Au nanoparticles supported on P25 TiO2 (Au/TiO2) were prepared by a facile sol-immobilisation method and investigated for the surface plasmon-assisted glycerol oxidation under base-free conditions. The Au/TiO2 samples were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Catalysts were prepared using polyvinyl alcohol as stabiliser as well as in the absence of polymer stabiliser. Both the conversion and the reaction selectivity are affected by the plasmon-assisted oxidation and there is an interplay between the presence of the stabiliser and the Au nanoparticle size.

Abstract
Conversion of biomass to chemicals provides essential products to human society from renewable resources. In this context, achieving atom-economical and energy-efficient conversion with high selectivity towards target products remains a key challenge. Recent developments in nanostructured catalysts address this challenge reporting remarkable performances in shape and morphology dependent catalysis by metals on nano scale in energy and environmental applications. In this review, most recent advances in synthesis of heterogeneous nanomaterials, surface characterization and catalytic performances for hydrogenation and oxidation for biorenewables with plausible mechanism have been discussed. The perspectives obtained from this review paper will provide insights into rational design of active, selective and stable catalytic materials for sustainable production of value-added chemicals from biomass resources.
