Synthesis of polyurethanes through the oxidative decarboxylation of oxamic acids: a new gateway toward self-blown foams

Polyurethane (PU) thermoplastics and thermosets were prepared through the step-growth polymerization of in situ generated polyisocyanates through the decarboxylation of polyoxamic acids, in the presence of phenyliodine diacetate (PIDA), and polyols. The CO2 produced during the reaction allowed the access to self-blown polyurethane foams through an endogenous chemical blowing. The acetic acid released from ligand exchange at the iodine center was also shown to accelerate the polymerization reaction, avoiding the recourse to an additional catalyst. Changing simple parameters during the production process allowed us to access flexible PU foams with a wide range of properties.

Microcapsules of Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) Loaded with Aliphatic Isocyanates for Adhesive Applications

This work introduces the encapsulation of hexamethylene diisocyanate derivatives (HDI, TriHDI, and PHDI) with the biodegradable polymer poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) through a solvent evaporation method. These microcapsules (MCs) were then employed in adhesive formulations for footwear. Moreover, MCs containing PHDI were produced in a closed vessel, demonstrating the potential for recovering and reusing organic solvents for the first time. The MCs were achieved with an isocyanate payload reaching up to 68 wt %, displaying a spherical shape, a core-shell structure, and thin walls without holes or cracks. The application of MCs as cross-linking agents for adhesives was evaluated following industry standards. The adhesives' strength surpassed the minimum requirement by a significant margin. Creep tests demonstrated that the formulation with MCs exhibits superior thermostability. Furthermore, the formulation with MCs-PHDI presented the best results reported to date for this type of system, as no displacement was observed in the bonded substrates. Environmental assessment indicates that adhesives with MCs have higher global warming potential (+16.2%) and energy consumption (+10.8%) than the standard commercial adhesives, but under alternative realistic scenarios, the differences can be insignificant. Therefore, adhesive formulations incorporating MCs promise to be on par with traditional adhesive systems regarding environmental impacts while providing benefits such as improved and safe handling of isocyanates and excellent bonding effectiveness.

Silane Effects on Adhesion Enhancement of 2K Polyurethane Adhesives

With excellent properties such as great flexibility, outstanding chemical resistance, and superb mechanical strength, two-part polyurethane (2K PU) adhesives have been widely applied in many applications, including those in transportation and construction. Despite the extensive use, their adhesion to nonpolar polymer substrates still needs to be improved and has been widely studied. The incorporation of silane molecules and the use of plasma treatment on substrate surfaces are two popular methods to increase the adhesion of 2K PU adhesives, but their detailed adhesion enhancement mechanisms are still largely unknown. In this research, sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to probe the influence of added or coated silanes on the interfacial structure at the buried polypropylene (PP)/2K PU adhesive interface in situ. How plasma treatment on PP could improve adhesion was also investigated. To achieve maximum adhesion, two methods to involve silanes were studied. In the first method, silanes were directly mixed with the 2K PU adhesive before use. In the second method, silane molecules were spin-coated onto the PP substrate before the PU adhesive applied. It was found that the first method could not improve the 2K PU adhesion to PP, while the second method could substantially enhance such adhesion. SFG studies demonstrated that with the second method silane molecules chemically reacted at the interface to connect PP and 2K PU adhesive to improve the adhesion. With the first method, silane molecules could not effectively diffuse to the interface to enhance adhesion. In this research, plasma treatment was also found to be a useful method to improve the adhesion of the 2K PU adhesive to nonpolar polymer materials.

Polyhydroxyurethane and Poly(ethylene oxide) Multiblock Copolymer Networks: Crosslinking with Polysilsesquioxane, Reprocessing and Solid Polyelectrolyte Properties

This contribution reports the synthesis of polyhydroxyurethane (PHU)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) multiblock copolymer networks crosslinked with polysilsesquioxane (PSSQ). First, the linear PHU-PEO multiblock copolymers were synthesized via the step-growth polymerization of bis(6-membered cyclic carbonate) (B6CC) with α,ω-diamino-terminated PEOs with variable molecular weights. Thereafter, the PHU-PEO copolymers were allowed to react with 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS) to afford the derivatives bearing triethoxysilane moieties, the hydrolysis and condensation of which afforded the PHU-PEO networks crosslinked with PSSQ. It was found that the PHU-PEO networks displayed excellent reprocessing properties in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonate [Zn(OTf)2]. Compared to the PHU networks crosslinked via the reaction of difunctional cyclic carbonate with multifunctional amines, the organic-inorganic PHU networks displayed the decreased reprocessing temperature. The metathesis of silyl ether bonds is responsible for the improved reprocessing behavior. By adding lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiOTf), the PHU-PEO networks were further transformed into the solid polymer electrolytes. It was found that the crystallization of PEO chains in the crosslinked networks was significantly suppressed. The solid polymer electrolytes had the ionic conductivity as high as 7.64 × 10-5 S × cm-1 at 300 K. More importantly, the solid polymer electrolytes were recyclable; the reprocessing did not affect the ionic conductivity.

Reactive Disperse Dyes Bearing Various Blocked Isocyanate Groups for Digital Textile Printing Ink

Wastewater management is of considerable economic and environmental importance for the dyeing industry. Digital textile printing (DTP), which is based on sublimation transfer and does not generate wastewater, is currently being explored as an inkjet-based method of printing colorants onto fabric. It finds wide industrial applications with most poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and nylon fibers. However, for additional industrial applications, it is necessary to use natural fibers, such as cotton. Therefore, to expand the applicability of DTP, it is essential to develop a novel reactive disperse dye that can interact with the fabric. In this study, we introduced a blocked isocyanate functional group into the dye to enhance binding to the fabric. The effect of sublimation transfer on fabrics as a function of temperature was compared using the newly synthesized reactive disperse dyes with different blocking groups based on pyrazole derivatives, such as pyrazole (Py), di-methylpyrazole (DMPy), and di-tert-butylpyrazole (DtBPy). Fabrics coated with the new reactive disperse dyes, including PET, nylon, and cotton, were printed at 190 °C, 200 °C, and 210 °C using thermal transfer equipment. In the case of the synthesized DHP-A dye on cotton at 210 °C, the color strength was 2.1, which was higher than that of commercial dyes and other synthesized dyes, such as DMP-A and DTP-A. The fastness values of the synthesized DHP-A were measured on cotton, and it was found that the washing and light fastness values on cotton are higher than those of commercial dyes. This study confirmed the possibility of introducing isocyanate groups into reactive disperse dyes.

On-Demand Release of Secondary Amine Bases for the Activation of Catalysts and Crosslinkers

Dynamic covalent (DCv) ureas have been used abundantly to design self-healing materials. We demonstrate that apart from self-healing materials, the species present in the equilibrium of DCv ureas can be employed as responsive organocatalysts. Easily controllable stimuli like heat or addition of water shift the equilibrium towards isocyanate and free base which can function as an in situ released reagent. We demonstrate this application of DCv ureas with two examples. Firstly, we use the liberated base to catalytically activate a latent organocatalyst for acylhydrazone formation. Secondly, this base can be employed in an equimolar manner to trigger the release of nitrile-N-oxides from chlorooximes, which react with acrylate-terminated polymers to form an isoxazoline polymer gel.

Molecular Behavior of 1K Polyurethane Adhesive at Buried Interfaces: Plasma Treatment, Annealing, and Adhesion

One-part (1K) polyurethane (PU) adhesive has excellent bulk strength and environmental resistance. It is therefore widely used in many fields, such as construction, transportation, and flexible lamination. However, when contacting non-polar polymer materials, the poor adhesion of 1K PU adhesive may not be able to support its outdoor applications. To solve this problem, plasma treatment of the non-polar polymer surface has been utilized to improve adhesion between the polymer and 1K PU adhesive. The detailed mechanisms of adhesion enhancement of the 1K PU adhesive caused by plasma treatment on polymer substrates have not been studied extensively because adhesion is a property of buried interfaces which are difficult to probe. In this study, sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to investigate the buried PU/polypropylene (PP) interfaces in situ nondestructively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the X-ray diffraction technique, and adhesion tests were used as supplemental methods to SFG in the study. The 1K PU adhesive is a moisture-curing adhesive and usually needs several days to be fully cured. Here, time-dependent SFG experiments were conducted to monitor the molecular behaviors at the buried 1K PU adhesive/PP interfaces during the curing process. It was found that the PU adhesives underwent rearrangement during the curing process with functional groups gradually becoming ordered at the interface. Stronger adhesion between the plasma-treated PP substrate and the 1K PU adhesive was observed, which was achieved by the interfacial chemical reactions and a more rigid interface. Annealing the samples increased the reaction speed and enhanced the bulk PU strength with higher crystallinity. In this research, molecular mechanisms of adhesion enhancement of the 1K PU adhesive caused by the plasma treatment on PP and by annealing the PU/PP samples were elucidated.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Soil Burial Degradation of Biobased Polyurethanes

There is an urgent need for developing degradable polymeric systems based on bio-derived and sustainable materials. In recent years, polyurethanes derived from castor oil have emerged due to the large availability and sustainable characteristics of castor oil. However, these polymers are normally prepared through tedious and/or energy-intensive procedures or using high volatile and/or toxic reagents such as volatile isocyanates or epoxides. Furthermore, poor investigation has been carried out to design castor oil derived polyurethanes with degradable characteristics or thorough specifically sustainable synthetic procedures. Herein, castor oil-derived polyurethane with more than 90% biomass-derived carbon content and enhanced degradable features was prepared through a simple, eco-friendly (E-factor: 0.2), and scalable procedure, employing a recently developed commercially available biomass-derived (61% bio-based carbon content) low-volatile polymeric isocyanate. The novel material was compared with a castor oil derived-polyurethane prepared with a commercially available fossil-based isocyanate counterpart. The different castor oil-derived polyurethanes were investigated by means of water uptake, soil burial degradation, and disintegration tests in compost. Characterization analyses, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were carried out both prior to and after degradation tests. The results suggest potential applications of the degradable castor oil-derived polyurethane in different fields, such as mulch films for agricultural purposes.

Template-Free Preparation of a Mesopore-Rich Hierarchically Porous Carbon Monolith from a Thermally Rearrangeable Polyurea Network

A mesopore-rich, hierarchically porous carbon monolith was prepared by carbonizing a polyisocyanurate network derived by thermal rearrangement of a polyurea network. The initial polyurea network was synthesized by the cross-linking polymerization of tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane (TAPM) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in the sol-forming condition, followed by precipitation into nanoparticulate solids in a nonsolvent. The powder was molded into a shape and then heated at 200–400 °C to obtain the porous carbon precursor composed of the rearranged network. The thermolysis of urea bonds to amine and isocyanate groups, the subsequent cyclization of isocyanates to isocyanurates, and the vaporization of volatiles caused sintering of the nanoparticles into a monolithic network with micro-, meso-, and macropores. The rearranged network was carbonized to obtain a carbon monolith. It was found that the rearranged network, with a high isocyanurate ratio, led to a porous carbon with a high mesopore ratio. The electrical conductivity of the resulting carbon monoliths exhibited a rapid response to carbon dioxide adsorption, indicating efficient gas transport through the hierarchical pore structure.

Use of Novel Non-Toxic Bismuth Catalyst for the Preparation of Flexible Polyurethane Foam

Foam products are one of the largest markets for polyurethane (PU) and are heavily used in many sectors. However, current PU formulations use highly toxic and environmentally unfriendly production processes. Meanwhile, the increasing environmental concerns and regulations are intensifying the research into green and non-toxic products. In this study, we synthesized flexible polyurethane foam (PUF) using different weight percentages (0.025%, 0.05% and 0.1%) of a non-toxic bismuth catalyst. The bismuth-catalyzed foams presented a well evolved cellular structure with an open cell morphology. The properties of the bismuth-catalyzed flexible PUF, such as the mechanical, morphological, kinetic and thermal behaviors, were optimized and compared with a conventional tin-catalyzed PUF. The bismuth-catalyst revealed a higher isocyanate conversion efficiency than the stannous octoate catalyst. When comparing samples with similar densities, the bismuth-catalyzed foams present better mechanical behavior than the tin-catalyzed sample with similar thermal stability. The high solubility of bismuth triflate in water, together with its high Lewis acidity, have been shown to benefit the production of PU foams.

Recent developments in chemical conjugation strategies targeting native amino acids in proteins and their applications in antibody-drug conjugates

Many fields in chemical biology and synthetic biology require effective bioconjugation methods to achieve their desired functions and activities. Among such biomolecule conjugates, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) need a linker that provides a stable linkage between cytotoxic drugs and antibodies, whilst conjugating in a biologically benign, fast and selective fashion. This review focuses on how the development of novel organic synthesis can solve the problems of traditional linker technology. The review shall introduce and analyse the current developments in the modification of native amino acids on peptides or proteins and their applicability to ADC linker. Thereafter, the review shall discuss in detail each endogenous amino acid's intrinsic reactivity and selectivity aspects, and address the research effort to construct an ADC using each conjugation method.

Blocking and Deblocking of Diisocyanate to Synthesize Polyurethanes

Diisocyanates, particularly toluene diisocyanate (TDI), are useful for the preparation of various polyurethanes with specific applications as leather-like materials, adhesives and insoles, etc. Blocking agents can be used for the operational simplicity and to reduce the hazards of TDI. In this paper, we reported the use of 3-(4-bromo-phenyl)-1H-pyrazole to block toluene diisocyanate (TDI). FTIR, NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, contact angle analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for the characterization. The effectiveness of the blocking was confirmed by spectroscopic techniques. The DSC thermogram showed that blocked adducts deblock at 240 °C, causing the regeneration of TDI, and causing the diisocyanates to react with polyols of different molecular weights, forming polyurethanes. The characterization of the polyurethanes was performed by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and a contact angle study.

Interrupted aza-Wittig reactions using iminophosphoranes to synthesize 11C-carbonyls

A direct CO2-fixation methodology couples structurally diverse iminophosphoranes with various nucleophiles to synthesize ureas, carbamates, thiocarbamates, and amides, and is amenable for 11C radiolabeling. This methodology is practical, as demonstrated by the synthesis of >35 products and isolation of the molecular imaging radiopharmaceuticals [11C]URB694 and [11C]glibenclamide.

Renewable Polyurethanes from Sustainable Biological Precursors

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels, higher oil prices, and greenhouse gas emissions, the scientific community has been conducting an ongoing search for viable renewable alternatives to petroleum-based products, with the anticipation of increased adaptation in the coming years. New academic and industrial developments have encouraged the utilization of renewable resources for the development of ecofriendly and sustainable materials, and here, we focus on those advances that impact polyurethane (PU) materials. Vegetable oils, algae oils, and polysaccharides are included among the major renewable resources that have supported the development of sustainable PU precursors to date. Renewable feedstocks such as algae have the benefit of requiring only sunshine, carbon dioxide, and trace minerals to generate a sustainable biomass source, offering an improved carbon footprint to lessen environmental impacts. Incorporation of renewable content into commercially viable polymer materials, particularly PUs, has increasing and realistic potential. Biobased polyols can currently be purchased, and the potential to expand into new monomers offers exciting possibilities for new product development. This Review highlights the latest developments in PU chemistry from renewable raw materials, as well as the various biological precursors being employed in the synthesis of thermoset and thermoplastic PUs. We also provide an overview of literature reports that focus on biobased polyols and isocyanates, the two major precursors to PUs.

How Can the Desert Beetle and Biowaste Inspire Hybrid Separation Materials for Water Desalination?

Highly effective, hybrid separation materials for water purification were generated following a bioinspired system available in nature. The desert beetle was the inspiration for the generation of separation materials. Using the hydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane as the basis, the membrane was first activated and then furnished with silane-based linkers, and the covalent anchoring of chitosan was successfully accomplished. The obtained surface architecture was a copy of the desert beetle's armor possessing a hydrophobic matrix with hydrophilic domains. The modification was done in the presence or the lack of catalyst (N,N-diisopropylethylamine) that made it possible to tune easily wettability, roughness, and material as well as adhesive features. The membrane morphology and surface chemistry were studied by applying a series of analytical techniques. As a result of chitosan attachment, substantial improvement in transport and separation was reported. Pristine PVDF was characterized by a water flux of 5.28 kg m^-2 h^-1 and an activation energy of 48.16 kJ mol^-1. The water flux and activation energy for a hybrid membrane with chitosan were equal to 15.55 kg m^-2 h^-1 and 33.98 kJ mol^-1, respectively. The hybrid materials possessed enhanced stability and water resistance that were maintained after 10 cycles of membrane distillation tests.

Electrochemical access to benzimidazolone and quinazolinone derivatives via in situ generation of isocyanates

Isocyanates are the key intermediates for several organic transformations towards the synthesis of diverse pharmaceutical targets. Herein, we report the development of an oxidant-free protocol for electrochemical in situ generation of isocyanates. This strategy highlights expedient access to benzimidazolones and quinazolinones and eliminates the need for exogenous oxidants. Furthermore, detailed mechanistic studies provide strong support towards our hypothesis of in situ isocyanate generation.

O-Isocyanates as Uncharged 1,3-Dipole Equivalents in [3+2] Cycloadditions

1,3-Dipoles are commonly used in [3+2] cycloadditions, whereas isoelectronic uncharged dipole variants remain underdeveloped. In contrast to conventional 1,3-dipoles, uncharged dipole equivalents form zwitterionic cycloadducts, which can be exploited to build further molecular complexity. In this work, the first cycloadditions of oxygen-substituted isocyanates (O-isocyanates) were studied experimentally and by DFT calculations. This unique cycloaddition strategy provides access to a novel class of heterocycle aza-oxonium ylides through intramolecular and intermolecular cycloadditions with alkenes. This allowed a systematic study of the reactivity of the transient aza-oxonium ylide intermediate, which can undergo N-O bond cleavage followed by nitrene C-H insertion, and the formation of β-lactams or isoxazolidinones upon varying the structure of the alkene or O-isocyanate reagents.

Reactivity and Curing Efficiency of Isocyanate Cross-Linkers with Imidazole-Based Blocking Agents for Low-Temperature Curing of Automotive Clearcoats

For the application of low-temperature curing on automotive clearcoats, isocyanate cross-linkers blocked with imidazole derivatives were newly synthesized. The effect of the alkyl groups in the imidazole derivatives on the deblocking behavior and curing kinetics was investigated. The free isocyanate groups exposed by the deblocking of imidazole-based blocking agents were monitored by real-time Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The bond dissociation energy, activation energy of deblocking, and H–N distance were interpreted through density functional theory simulation of various imidazole-based blocked isocyanates. To evaluate their applicability to automotive clearcoats, the synthesized imidazole-based blocked isocyanates were mixed with a polyol binder containing hydroxyl groups, and the clearcoat samples were cured at relatively low curing temperatures (100, 110, and 120 °C). The real-time storage modulus was measured using a rotational rheometer to elucidate the thermal curing dynamics by the blocking agents. In addition, the surface hardness of the cured clearcoat layers, which is affected by the chemical structure of the imidazole derivatives, was evaluated by nanoindentation test. In-depth analyses of the deblocking behaviors and thermal curing properties of clearcoats using imidazole-based blocked isocyanates demonstrated that the newly developed coating system could be suitably applied for the development of low-temperature curing technology.

Effect of Urethane Crosslinking by Blocked Isocyanates with Pyrazole-Based Blocking Agents on Rheological and Mechanical Performance of Clearcoats

A novel blocked isocyanate crosslinker was synthesized, and its applicability was investigated for the low-temperature curing of automotive clearcoats. Various pyrazole derivatives were prepared as blocking agents in isocyanate crosslinkers, which strongly affect the deblocking and curing properties of the urethane-bonded coating systems. The thermal curing properties of clearcoat samples containing a pyrazole-based blocked isocyanate crosslinker and polyol resin were characterized under two different temperature conditions (120 and 150 °C). The decrease in the amount of hydroxyl groups in the polyol before and after curing was expressed by the change in OH stretching frequency in the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. The real-time rheological storage moduli of the bulk clearcoat mixtures were measured via a rotational rheometer to determine the effect of pyrazole-based blocking agents on the curing dynamics. In addition, a rigid-body pendulum tester (RPT) was employed to investigate the curing behavior in the thin film form. The nano-indentation and the nano-scratch tests were conducted to examine the surface hardness and scratch resistance characteristics of the cured clearcoat films. The results show that a low-temperature curing system of clearcoats can be realized by tuning the curing temperature and reactivity of isocyanate crosslinkers blocked with pyrazole-based substituents.

Recent Advances in Functional Polyurethane and Its Application in Leather Manufacture: A Review

Over last few years, polyurethane (PU) has been applied in a number of areas because of its remarkable features, such as excellent mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance, toughness, low temperature flexibility, etc. More specifically, PU can be easily "tailor made" to meet specific demands. This structure-property relationship endows great potential for use in wider applications. With the improvement of living standards, ordinary polyurethane products cannot meet people's growing needs for comfort, quality, and novelty. This has recently drawn enormous commercial and academic attention to the development of functional polyurethane. Among the major applications, PU is one of the prominent retanning agents and coating materials in leather manufacturing. This review gives a summary of academic study in the field of functional PU as well as its recent application in leather manufacture.

Activated Polyhydroxyalkanoate Meshes Prevent Bacterial Adhesion and Biofilm Development in Regenerative Medicine Applications

Regenerative medicine has become an extremely valuable tool offering an alternative to conventional therapies for the repair and regeneration of tissues. The re-establishment of tissue and organ functions can be carried out by tissue engineering strategies or by using medical devices such as implants. However, with any material being implanted inside the human body, one of the conundrums that remains is the ease with which these materials can get contaminated by bacteria. Bacterial adhesion leads to the formation of mature, alive and complex three-dimensional biofilm structures, further infection of surrounding tissues and consequent development of complicated chronic infections. Hence, novel tissue engineering strategies delivering biofilm-targeted therapies, while at the same time allowing tissue formation are highly relevant. In this study our aim was to develop surface modified polyhydroxyalkanoate-based fiber meshes with enhanced bacterial anti-adhesive and juvenile biofilm disrupting properties for tissue regeneration purposes. Using reactive and amphiphilic star-shaped macromolecules as an additive to a polyhydroxyalkanoate spinning solution, a synthetic antimicrobial peptide, Amhelin, with strong bactericidal and anti-biofilm properties, and Dispersin B, an enzyme promoting the disruption of exopolysaccharides found in the biofilm matrix, were covalently conjugated to the fibers by addition to the solution before the spinning process. Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the most problematic pathogens responsible for tissue-related infections. The initial antibacterial screening showed that Amhelin proved to be strongly bactericidal at 12 μg/ml and caused >50% reductions of biofilm formation at 6 μg/ml, while Dispersin B was found to disperse >70% of pre-formed biofilms at 3 μg/ml. Regarding the cytotoxicity of the agents toward L929 murine fibroblasts, a CC50 of 140 and 115 μg/ml was measured for Amhelin and Dispersin B, respectively. Optimization of the electrospinning process resulted in aligned fibers. Surface activated fibers with Amhelin and Dispersin B resulted in 83% reduction of adhered bacteria on the surface of the fibers. Additionally, the materials developed were found to be cytocompatible toward L929 murine fibroblasts. The strategy reported in this preliminary study suggests an alternative approach to prevent bacterial adhesion and, in turn biofilm formation, in materials used in regenerative medicine applications such as tissue engineering.

Effects of Isosorbide Incorporation into Flexible Polyurethane Foams: Reversible Urethane Linkages and Antioxidant Activity

Isosorbide (ISB), a nontoxic bio-based bicyclic diol composed from two fuzed furans, was incorporated into the preparation of flexible polyurethane foams (FPUFs) for use as a cell opener and to impart antioxidant properties to the resulting foam. A novel method for cell opening was designed based on the anticipated reversibility of the urethane linkages formed by ISB with isocyanate. FPUFs containing various amounts of ISB (up to 5 wt%) were successfully prepared without any noticeable deterioration in the appearance and physical properties of the resulting foams. The air permeability of these resulting FPUFs was increased and this could be further improved by thermal treatment at 160 °C. The urethane units based on ISB enabled cell window opening, as anticipated, through the reversible urethane linkage. The ISB-containing FPUFs also demonstrated better antioxidant activity by impeding discoloration. Thus, ISB, a nontoxic, bio-based diol, can be a valuable raw material (or additive) for eco-friendly FPUFs without seriously compromising the physical properties of these FPUFs.

Preparation and Characterization of Isosorbide-Based Self-Healable Polyurethane Elastomers with Thermally Reversible Bonds

Polyurethane (PU) is a versatile polymer used in a wide range of applications. Recently, imparting PU with self-healing properties has attracted much interest to improve the product durability. The self-healing mechanism conceivably occurs through the existence of dynamic reversible bonds over a specific temperature range. The present study investigates the self-healing properties of 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitol-based PUs prepared from a prepolymer of poly(tetra-methylene ether glycol) and 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) with different chain extenders (isosorbide or isomannide). PU with the conventional chain extender 1,4-butanediol was prepared for comparison. The urethane bonds in 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitol-based PUs were thermally reversible (as confirmed by the generation of isocyanate peaks observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) at mildly elevated temperatures and the PUs showed good mechanical properties. Especially the isosorbide-based polyurethane showed potential self-healing ability under mild heat treatment, as observed in reprocessing tests. It is inferred that isosorbide, bio-based bicyclic diol, can be employed as an efficient chain extender of polyurethane prepolymers to improve self-healing properties of polyurethane elastomers via reversible features of the urethane bonds.

Fluoride-Catalyzed Deblocking: A Route to Polymeric Urethanes

We report a fluoride-catalyzed deblocking of urethanes as "blocked" isocyanates. Organic and inorganic sources of fluoride ion proved effective for deblocking urethanes and for converting polyurethanes to small molecules. Distinct from conventional deblocking chemistry involving organometallic compounds and high temperatures, the method we describe is metal-free and operates at or slightly above room temperature. The use of fluorescent blocking agents enabled visual and spectroscopic monitoring of blocking/deblocking reactions, and the selected conditions proved applicable to urethanes containing a variety of blocking groups. The method additionally enabled a one pot deblocking and polymerization with α,ω-diols. Overall, this deblocking/polymerization strategy offers a convenient and efficient solution to problems that have limited the breadth of applications of polyurethane chemistry.

A thermochromic luminous polyurethane based on long persistent luminescent phosphors and thermochromic pigment
