Atomically dispersed metal catalysts on nanodiamond and its derivatives: synthesis and catalytic application

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADMCs) have attracted increasing interest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. As sub-nanometric catalysts, ADMCs have exhibited remarkable catalytic performance in many reactions. ADMCs are classified into two categories: single atom catalysts (SACs) and atomically dispersed clusters with a few atoms. To stabilize the highly active ADMCs, nanodiamond (ND) and its derivatives (NDDs) are promising supports. In this Feature Article, we have introduced the advantages of NDDs with a highly curved surface and tunable surface properties. The controllable defective sites and oxygen functional groups are known as the anchoring sites for ADMCs. Tunable surface acid-base properties enable ADMCs supported on NDDs to exhibit unique selectivity towards target products and an extended lifetime in many reactions. In addition, we have firstly overviewed the recent advances in the synthesis strategies for effectively fabricating ADMCs on NDDs, and further discussed how to achieve the atomic dispersion of metal precursors and stabilize the as-formed metal atoms against migration and agglomeration based on NDDs. And then, we have also systematically summarized the advantages of ADMCs supported on NDDs in reactions, including hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, aerobic oxidation and electrochemical reaction. These reactions can also effectively guide the design of ADMCs. The recent progress in understanding the effect of structure of active centers and metal-support interactions (MSIs) on the catalytic performance of ADMCs is particularly highlighted. At last, the possible research directions in ADMCs are forecasted.

First principles studies of the interactions between alkali metal elements and oxygen-passivated nanopores in graphene

We characterize the structure-property relationship of alkali metal elements in oxygen-passivated graphene pores using the density functional theory that accounts for quantum mechanical effects and charge transfer. Our description is based on the structural and electronic properties of the system and shows common trends among the different alkali metals and pores. We find that these nanopores which serve as docking sites for alkali metal elements give the strongest binding when the size of the pore is similar to the element's van der Waals radius. A linear correlation between the binding energy and the energy location of the alkali element valence state is found for all elements and pores. Analysis of the charge transfer reveals that alkali adsorption increases the local charge in the perimeters of the pore by amounts that depend on the geometry. Moreover, charge distributions in pristine graphene resemble those of an ideal conductor despite its semimetallic character and atomic thickness while oscillations in the vicinity of O-passivated nanopores are observed. Our results suggest that charge transfer is localized within a few nanometers of the pore and, therefore, allude to high density energy storage. The outcomes of this work are significant towards the application of porous graphene as effective membranes for ion filtration of water and electrode applications.

Growth of Ni nanoclusters on irradiated graphene: a molecular dynamics study

We studied the soft landing of Ni atoms on a previously damaged graphene sheet by means of molecular dynamics simulations. We found a monotonic decrease of the cluster frequency as a function of its size, but few big clusters comprise an appreciable fraction of the total number of Ni atoms. The aggregation of Ni atoms is also modeled by means of a simple phenomenological model. The results are in clear contrast with the case of hard or energetic landing of metal atoms, where there is a tendency to form mono-disperse metal clusters. This behavior is attributed to the high diffusion of unattached Ni atoms, together with vacancies acting as capture centers. The findings of this work show that a simple study of the energetics of the system is not enough in the soft landing regime, where it is unavoidable to also consider the growth process of metal clusters.

Morphology controlled graphene-alloy nanoparticle hybrids with tunable carbon monoxide conversion to carbon dioxide

Selective oxidation of CO to CO2 using metallic or alloy nanoparticles as catalysts can solve two major problems of energy requirements and environmental pollution. Achieving 100% conversion efficiency at a lower temperature is a very important goal. This requires sustained efforts to design and develop novel supported catalysts containing alloy nanoparticles. In this regard, the decoration of nanoalloys with graphene, as a support for the catalyst, can provide a novel structure due to the synergic effect of the nanoalloys and graphene. Here, we demonstrate the effect of nano-PdPt (Palladium-Platinum) alloys having different morphologies on the catalytic efficiency for the selective oxidation of CO. Efforts were made to prepare different morphologies of PdPt alloy nanoparticles with the advantage of tuning the capping agent (PVP - polyvinyl pyrollidone) and decorating them on graphene sheets via the wet-chemical route. The catalytic activity of the G-PdPt hybrids with an urchin-like morphology has been found to be superior (higher % conversion at 135 °C lower) to that with a nanoflower morphology. The above experimental observations are further supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.
