Antibacterial Hydrophilic ZnO Microstructure Film with Underwater Oleophobic and Self-Cleaning Antifouling Properties

Super-hydrophilic and oleophobic functional materials can prevent pollution or adsorption by repelling oil, and have good circulation. However, traditional strategies for preparing these functional materials either use expensive fabrication machines or contain possibly toxic organic polymers, which may prohibit the practical application. The research of multifunctional ZnO microstructures or nanoarrays thin films with super-hydrophilic, antifouling, and antibacterial properties has not been reported yet. Moreover, the exploration of underwater oleophobic and self-cleaning antifouling properties in ZnO micro/nanostructures is still in its infancy. Here, we prepared ZnO microstructured films on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates (F-ZMF) for the development of advanced self-cleaning type super-hydrophilic and oleophobic materials. With the increase of the accelerators, the average size of the F-ZMF microstructures decreased. The F-ZMF shows excellent self-cleaning performance and hydrophilic (water contact angle ≤ 10°) and oleophobic characteristics in the underwater antifouling experiment. Under a dark condition, F-ZMF-4 showed good antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) with inhibition rates of 99.1% and 99.9%, respectively. This study broadens the application scope of ZnO-based material and provides a novel prospect for the development of self-cleaning super-hydrophilic and oleophobic materials.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanostructures on Flexible Substrate and Application as an Electrochemical Immunoglobulin-G Immunosensor

Immunoglobulin G (IgG), a type of antibody, represents approximately 75% of serum antibodies in humans, and is the most common type of antibody found in blood circulation. Consequently, the development of simple, fast and reliable systems for IgG detection, which can be achieved using electrochemical sandwich-type immunosensors, is of considerable interest. In this study we have developed an immunosensor for human (H)-IgG using an inexpensive and very simple fabrication method based on ZnO nanorods (NRs) obtained through the electrodeposition of ZnO. The ZnO NRs were treated by electrodepositing a layer of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to ensure an easy immobilization of the antibodies. On Indium Tin Oxide supported on Polyethylene Terephthalate/ZnO NRs/rGO substrate, the sandwich configuration of the immunosensor was built through different incubation steps, which were all optimized. The immunosensor is electrochemically active thanks to the presence of gold nanoparticles tagging the secondary antibody. The immunosensor was used to measure the current density of the hydrogen development reaction which is indirectly linked to the concentration of H-IgG. In this way the calibration curve was constructed obtaining a logarithmic linear range of 10-1000 ng/mL with a detection limit of few ng/mL and good sensitivity.

Effect of ZnO surface morphology on its electrochemical performance

The purpose of this paper is to bridge the gap between ZnO surface morphology and its electrochemical performance. For this reason, ZnO nanowires (NWs) of different length were synthesized using an electrochemical method. Then, the electrochemical performance of the synthesized ZnO surfaces was studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical analysis results revealed that the increase of ZnO NW length contributes to the retrogression of electrochemical performance. Indeed, the electrochemical performance is mainly related to the wettability behavior of the ZnO nanowire surfaces. When the ZnO NWs length increases, the surface become more hydrophobic, therefore, charge transfers between the electrode/electrolyte decrease. To improve the electrochemical performance of ZnO, we propose a new strategy combining NWs and microsheets (μSs) for further improving the morphology. Finally, the surfaces based on the double structure of ZnO provide good propagation of charge at the surface, good transfer in the electrode, good stability, and excellent scanning ability. In the present work we intend to pave the way for achieving high electrochemical performance ZnO-based layers.

Selective growth of ZnO nanorods by thickness contrast in In-doped ZnO quantum dots seed layer

Selective growth of ZnO nanorods (NRs) have been demonstrated using thickness contrast in In-doped ZnO (IZO) quantum dot (QD) seed layer. The use of IZO QD as a seed layer has enabled the direct growth of ZnO NRs on soft substrates such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Depending on the annealing temperature, the seed layers show different grain sizes: as the annealing temperature increases, the seed grain size also increases accordingly. Interestingly, the hydrothermal growth of ZnO NRs has been found to depend on the seed grain size: the larger grain seed sample shows earlier start of growth compared to smaller seed grain counterpart. The same growth behavior has been found in the growth of ZnO NRs on seed layers having different thickness, due again to the difference in seed grain size. To advantageously exploit the observed growth behavior, the IZO QDs seed layers have been patterned by soft lithographic technique, which led to the formation of alternating thin/thick region periodically. On this patterned seed surface, the thin regions showed earlier start of NRs growth compared to thick regions, enabling the spatially selective growth of ZnO NRs. When applied for acetone gas sensors, the selectively grown sample showed better performance than the non-selectively grown counterpart. The low resistance in air, due to increased amount of chemisorbed oxygen, has been found to be responsible for the inferior sensor performance with non-selectively grown sample.

Rhodamine B Doped ZnO Monodisperse Microcapsules: Droplet-Based Synthesis, Dynamics and Self-Organization of ZnO Nanoparticles and Dye Molecules

In the present work, droplet-based microfluidics and sol-gel techniques were combined to synthesize highly monodisperse zinc oxide (ZnO) microspheres, which can be doped easily and precisely with dyes, such as rhodamine B (RhB), and whose size can be finely tuned in the 10-30 μm range. The as-synthesized microparticles were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and confocal microscopy. The results reveal that the microspheres exhibit an excellent size monodispersity, hollow feature, and a porous shell with a thickness of about 0.6 μm, in good agreement with our calculations. We show in particular by means of fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) analysis that the electric charges carried by ZnO nanoparticles primary units play a crucial role not just in the formation and structure of the synthesized ZnO microcapsules, but also in the confinement of dye molecules inside the microcapsules despite a demonstrated porosity of their shell in regards to the solvent (oil). Our results enable also the measurement of the diffusion coefficient of RhB molecules inside the microcapsules (DRhB=3.8×10-8 cm2/s), which is found two order of magnitude smaller than the literature value. We attribute such feature to a strong interaction between dye molecules and the electrical charges carried by ZnO nanoparticles. These results are important for potential applications in micro-thermometry (as shown recently in our previous study), photovoltaics, or photonics such as whispering gallery mode resonances.

Flexible ZnO-mAb nanoplatforms for selective peripheral blood mononuclear cell immobilization

Cancer is the second cause of death worldwide. This devastating disease requires specific, fast, and affordable solutions to mitigate and reverse this trend. A step towards cancer-fighting lies in the isolation of natural killer (NK) cells, a set of innate immune cells, that can either be used as biomarkers of tumorigenesis or, after autologous transplantation, to fight aggressive metastatic cells. In order to specifically isolate NK cells (which express the surface NKp30 receptor) from peripheral blood mononuclear cells, a ZnO immunoaffinity-based platform was developed by electrodeposition of the metal oxide on a flexible indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The resulting crystalline and well-aligned ZnO nanorods (NRs) proved their efficiency in immobilizing monoclonal anti-human NKp30 antibodies (mAb), obviating the need for additional procedures for mAb immobilization. The presence of NK cells on the peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMCs) fraction was evaluated by the response to their natural ligand (B7-H6) using an acridine orange (AO)-based assay. The successful selection of NK cells from PBMCs by our nanoplatform was assessed by the photoluminescent properties of AO. This easy and straightforward ZnO-mAb nanoplatform paves the way for the design of biosensors for clinic diagnosis, and, due to its inherent biocompatibility, for the initial selection of NK cells for autotransplantation immunotherapies.

Wettability of zinc oxide nanorod surfaces

In this work, we have studied the wettability of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) by highlighting the effect of polar and non-polar ZnO facets on contact angle (CA) results. The variation in the wettability behaviors of the synthesized surfaces is mainly related to physical and chemical surface texturing which influenced the liquid drop penetration. Indeed, three main penetration states can be deduced: total, partial, and null-penetration. Where, low CA (100.9°) with high contact angle hysteresis (CAH) (13°) is observed for total penetration of the liquid drop. While, high CA (139.6°) with low CAH (7°) is observed for null-penetration. Moreover, we have found that the chemical texturing of ZnO, especially the hydrophilicity of ZnO tips, responsible for liquid drop sticking, prevents the liquid slipping over the surface. In order to promote the liquid rolling on the ZnO surface, we reported the physical modification of the ZnO structures. Therefore, the rolling of the liquid drop on the inclined surface of ZnO is achieved by using a new structure based on double scale roughness. This surface exhibits superhydrophobic behavior with a CA of 153° and CAH of 3°.

A polyaniline-coated ZnS/ZnO/FTO photoelectrode for improving photocorrosion prevention and visible light absorption

To enhance the absorption of visible light for wide-bandgap semiconductors, methods such as sensitizing with nanoparticles or quantum dots and bandgap engineering using dopants have been reported.
