Iodine-Rich Supramolecular Complexes of Chlorobismuthates(III): Unusual Lone Pair Activity and Features of Halogen Bonding in Crystals

The first chrorobismuthate(III) supramolecular hybrids with halogen-bond-linked I2, (Py(CH2)2Py){[BiCl5](I2)} (1) and (Py(CH2)3Py){[BiCl5](I2)0.5} (2), were synthesized via the reaction between Bi2O3, I2, and salts of the corresponding cations in HCl. The compounds featured one- and two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular motifs built by I···Cl contacts; in the case of 1, Bi(III) is pentacoordinated due to the lone pair activity, which also interacted with I2 pi-orbitals, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both complexes exhibited moderate thermal stabilities and relatively narrow optical band gaps.

Aromatic-Carbonyl Interactions as an Emerging Type of Non-Covalent Interactions

Aromatic-carbonyl (Ar···C═O) interactions, attractive interactions between the arene plane and the carbon atom of carbonyl, are in the infancy as one type of new supramolecular bonding forces. Here the study and functionalization of aromatic-carbonyl interactions in solution is reported. A combination of aromatic-carbonyl interactions and dynamic covalent chemistry provided a versatile avenue. The stabilizing role and mechanism of arene-aldehyde/imine interactions are elucidated through crystal structures, NMR studies, and computational evidence. The movement of imine exchange equilibria further allowed the quantification of the interplay between arene-aldehyde/imine interactions and dynamic imine chemistry, with solvent effects offering another handle and matching the electrostatic feature of the interactions. Moreover, arene-aldehyde/imine interactions enabled the reversal of kinetic and thermodynamic selectivity and sorting of dynamic covalent libraries. To show the functional utility diverse modulation of fluorescence signals is realized with arene-aldehyde/imine interactions. The results should find applications in many aspects, including molecular recognition, assemblies, catalysis, and intelligent materials.

Iridium Complexes with BIAN-Type Ligands: Synthesis, Structure and Redox Chemistry

A series of iridium complexes with bis(diisopropylphenyl)iminoacenaphtene (dpp-bian) ligands, [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)Cl] (1), [Ir(cod)(NO)(dpp-bian)](BF₄)₂ (2) and [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄) (3), were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The structures of 1-3 feature a square planar backbone consisting of two C = C π-bonds of 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod) and two nitrogen atoms of dpp-bian supplemented with a chloride ion (for 1) or a NO group (for 2) to complete a square-pyramidal geometry. In the nitrosyl complex 2, the Ir-N-O group has a bent geometry (the angle is 125°). The CV data for 1 and 3 show two reversible waves between 0 and -1.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Reversible oxidation was also found at E_1/2 = 0.60 V for 1. Magnetochemical measurements for 2 in a range from 1.77 to 300 K revealed an increase in the magnetic moment with increasing temperature up to 1.2 μ_B (at 300 K). Nitrosyl complex 2 is unstable in solution and loses its NO group to yield [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄) (3). A paramagnetic complex, [Ir(cod)(dpp-bian)](BF₄)₂ (4), was also detected in the solution of 2 as a result of its decomposition. The EPR spectrum of 4 in CH₂Cl₂ is described by the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = gβHŜ with S = 1/2 and g_xx = g_yy = 2.393 and g_zz = 1.88, which are characteristic of the low-spin 5d⁷-Ir(II) state. DFT calculations were carried out in order to rationalize the experimental results.

Tuning of the Electrostatic Potentials on the Surface of the Sulfur Atom in Organic Molecules: Theoretical Design and Experimental Assessment

Noncovalent sulfur interactions are ubiquitous and play important roles in medicinal chemistry and organic optoelectronic materials. Quantum chemical calculations predicted that the electrostatic potentials on the surface of the sulfur atom in organic molecules could be tuned through the through-space effects of suitable substituents. This makes it possible to design different types of noncovalent sulfur interactions. The theoretical design was further confirmed by X-ray crystallographic experiments. The sulfur atom acts as the halogen atom acceptor to form the halogen bond in the cocrystal between 2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene, whereas it acts as the chalcogen atom donor to form the chalcogen bond in the cocrystal between 2,5-bis(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole and 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene.

Robust Supramolecular Dimers Derived from Benzylic-Substituted 1,2,4-Selenodiazolium Salts Featuring Selenium⋯π Chalcogen Bonding

The series of benzylic-substituted 1,2,4-selenodiazolium salts were prepared via cyclization reaction between 2-pyridylselenyl chlorides and nitriles and fully characterized. Substitution of the Cl anion by weakly binding anions promoted the formation supramolecular dimers featuring four center Se₂N₂ chalcogen bonding and two antiparallel selenium⋯π interactions. Chalcogen bonding interactions were studied using density functional theory calculations, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces, the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM), and the noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot. The investigations revealed fundamental role of the selenium⋯π contacts that are stronger than the Se⋯N interactions in supramolecular dimers. Importantly, described herein, the benzylic substitution approach can be utilized for reliable supramolecular dimerization of selenodiazolium cations in the solid state, which can be employed in supramolecular engineering.

Heteroleptic Zn(II)–Pentaiodobenzoate Complexes: Structures and Features of Halogen–Halogen Non-Covalent Interactions in Solid State

Reactions between Zn(II) nitrate, pentaiodobenzoic acid (HPIBA) and different pyridines in dimethylformamide (DMF) result in the formation of the heteroleptic neutral complexes [Zn(3,5-MePy)2PIBA2] (1) and [Zn(DMF)3(NO3)PIBA] (2). Both compounds were isolated in pure form, as shown by the PXRD data. The features of specific non-covalent interactions involving halogen atoms (halogen bonding) were examined by means of DFT calculations (QTAIM analysis and the estimation of corresponding energies).

Facile Access to 2-Selenoxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-quinazolinone Scaffolds and Corresponding Diselenides via Cyclization between Methyl Anthranilate and Isoselenocyanates: Synthesis and Structural Features

A practical method for the synthesis of 2-selenoxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-quinazolinone was reported. The latter compounds were found to undergo facile oxidation with H2O2 into corresponding diselenides. Novel organoselenium derivatives were characterized by the 1H, 77Se, and 13C NMR spectroscopies, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, IR, elemental analyses (C, H, N), and X-ray diffraction analysis for several of them. Novel heterocycles exhibited multiple remarkable chalcogen bonding (ChB) interactions in the solid state, which were studied theoretically.

Selenium(IV) Polybromide Complexes: Structural Diversity Driven by Halogen and Chalcogen Bonding

Reactions between bromoselenate(IV)-containing solutions, dibromine and salts of pyridinium-family organic cations resulted in structurally diverse, bromine-rich polybromine-bromoselenates(IV): (4-MePyH)₅[Se₂Br₉][SeBr₆](Br₃)₂ (1), (2-MePyH)₂{[SeBr₆](Br₂)} (2), (PyH)₂{[SeBr₅]Br(Br₂)₂} (3), (1-MePy)₂{[SeBr₆](Br₂)} (4). The compounds feature halogen and (in the case of 3) chalcogen bonding in solid state, resulting in formation of supramolecular architectures of different dimensionality. DFT calculations allowed estimation of the energies of non-covalent interactions in 1–4; additionally, characterization by Raman spectroscopy was performed.

Structural Organization of Dibromodiazadienes in the Crystal and Identification of Br···O Halogen Bonding Involving the Nitro Group

Nitro functionalized dibromodiazadiene dyes were prepared and fully characterized including X-ray single crystal analysis. Electron deficient dibromodiazadienes were found to be able to act as donors of halogen bonding (XB), while the nitro group acted as an acceptor of the XB. Depending on the substituents, the Br···O XB competed with other weak interactions, and for some of the dyes, they even outcompeted the XB involving the nitro group. However, the nitro functionalized dibromoalkenes 6a and 10a, which had only the nitro moiety as the most plausible acceptor of the XB, reliably formed 1D chains via Br⋯O XB. Experimental work was supported by the DFT calculations and topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader’s theory (QTAIM method).

Bifurcated Halogen Bond-Driven Supramolecular Double Helices from 1,2-Dihalotetrafluorobenzene and 2,2′-Bi(1,8-naphthyridine)

The unique enantiomeric pairs of double helices have been found in the structure of the cocrystal between 1,2-diiodotetrafluorobenzene and 2,2′-bi(1,8-naphthyridine). The formation of the supramolecular double helices is driven by the strong bifurcated iodine bonds which can force the herringbone packing arrangement of the molecules 2,2′-bi(1,8-naphthyridine) into a face-to-face π···π stacking pattern. In contrast, the cocrystal between 1,2-dibromotetrafluorobenzene (or 1,2-dichlorotetrafluorobenzene) and 2,2′-bi(1,8-naphthyridine) was not obtained under the same conditions. The interaction energies of the bifurcated halogen bonds and π···π stacking interactions were computed with the reliable dispersion-corrected density functional theory. The computational results show that the bifurcated iodine bond is much stronger than the bifurcated bromine bond and bifurcated chlorine bond, and it is the much stronger bifurcated iodine bond that makes the cocrystal of 1,2-diiodotetrafluorobenzene and 2,2′-bi(1,8-naphthyridine) much easier to be synthesized.

Theoretical Studies of a Silica Functionalized Acrylamide for Calcium Scale Inhibition

The calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) scale is one of the most common oilfield scales and oil and gas production bane. CaCO₃ scale can lead to a sudden halt in production or, worst-case scenario, accidents; therefore, CaCO₃ scale formation prevention is essential for the oil and gas industry. Scale inhibitors are chemicals that can mitigate this problem. We used two popular theoretical techniques in this study: Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD). The objective was to investigate the inhibitory abilities of mixed oligomers, specifically acrylamide functionalized silica (AM-Silica). DFT studies indicate that Ca²⁺ does not bind readily to acryl acid and acrylamide; however, it has a good binding affinity with PAM and Silica functionalized PAM. The highest binding affinity occurs in the silica region and not the -CONH functional groups. AIMD calculations corroborate the DFT studies, as observed from the MD trajectory that Ca²⁺ binds to PAM-Silica by forming bonds with silicon; however, Ca²⁺ initially forms a bond with silicon in the presence of water molecules. This bonding does not last long, and it subsequently bonds with the oxygen atoms present in the water molecule. PAM-Silica is a suitable calcium scale inhibitor because of its high binding affinity with Ca²⁺. Theoretical studies (DFT and AIMD) have provided atomic insights on how AM-Silica could be used as an efficient scale inhibitor.

Modelling the Interaction between Carboxylic Acids and Zinc Oxide: Insight into Degradation of ZnO Pigments

Computational modelling applied to cultural heritage can assist the characterization of painting materials and help to understand their intrinsic and external degradation processes. The degradation of the widely employed zinc oxide (ZnO)—a white pigment mostly used in oil paints—leads to the formation of metal soaps, complexes of Zn ions and long-chain fatty acids coming from the degradation of the oil binder. Being a serious problem affecting the appearance and the structural integrity of many oil paintings, it is relevant to characterize the structure of these complexes and to understand the reaction pathways associated with this degradation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the adsorption of the acetate and acetic acid on relatively large ZnO clusters and the formation of Zn–acetate complexes. Carboxylic acids with longer alkyl chains were then investigated as more realistic models of the fatty acids present in the oil medium. In addition, DFT calculations using a periodic ZnO slab were performed in order to compare the obtained results at different levels of theory. Optimization calculations as well as the formation energies of the ZnO@carboxylate coupled systems and the thermodynamics leading to possible degradation products were computed. Our results highlight the potential for DFT calculations to provide a better understanding of oil paint degradation, with the aim of contributing to the development of strengthening and conservation strategies of paintings.

Zn(II) and Co(II) 3D Coordination Polymers Based on 2-Iodoterephtalic Acid and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane: Structures and Sorption Properties

Metal-organic frameworks [M₂(2-I-bdc)₂bpe] (M = Zn(II) (1), Co(II) (2), 2-I-bdc = 2-iodoterephtalic acid, and bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffractometry. Both compounds retain their 3D structure after the removal of guest DMF molecules. Selectivity of sorption of different organic substrates from the gas phase was investigated for both complexes.

New hybrids constructed from diphenyliodonium and metal thiocyanates have been prepared, and their photo-induced structural transformations and corresponding color/fluorescence/magnetism variations have been investigated.

The competition and cooperativity of hydrogen/halogen bond and π-hole bond involving the heteronuclear ethylene analogues

The noncovalent interactions involving heteronuclear ethylene analogues H₂ CEH₂ (E = Si, Ge and Sn) have been studied by the Møller-Plesset perturbation theory to investigate the competition and cooperativity between the hydrogen/halogen bond and π-hole bond. H₂ CEH₂ has a dual role of being a Lewis base and acid with the region of π-electron accumulation above the carbon atom and the region of π-electron depletion (π-hole) above the E atom to participate in the NCX···CE (X = H and Cl) hydrogen/halogen bond and CE···NCY (Y = H, Cl, Li and Na) π-hole bond, respectively. When HCN/ClCN interacts with H₂ CEH₂ by two sites, the strength of hydrogen bond/halogen bond is stronger than that of π-hole bond. The π-hole bond becomes obviously stronger when the metal substituent of YCN (Y = Li and Na) interacting with H₂ CEH₂ , showing the character of partial covalent, its strength is much greater than that of hydrogen/halogen bond. In the ternary complexes, both hydrogen/halogen bond and π-hole bond are simultaneously strengthened compared to those in the binary complexes, especially in the systems containing alkali metal.

Interactions of aromatic rings in the crystal structures of hybrid polyoxometalates and Ru clusters

Computational analysis for π–π interaction energies of {(arene)Ru}2+ containing complexes and relative group 5 hybrid polyoxometalates reveals different frameworks. Some perspectives on πOF materials processing and crystal engineering were discussed.

Highly polar stacking interactions wrap inorganics in organics: lone-pair–π-hole interactions between the PdO4 core and electron-deficient arenes

Each PdO4 plane of Pd3(OAc)6 behaved as a 5-center nucleophile (O lone pairs and the dz2-PdII orbital) that interacts with π-donating arenes to afford highly polar circular stacking, where organics wrapped inorganics.

Crystal engineering strategies towards halogen-bonded metal–organic multi-component solids: salts, cocrystals and salt cocrystals

This highlight presents an overview of the current advances in the preparation of halogen bonded metal–organic multi-component solids, including salts and cocrystals comprising neutral and ionic constituents.

Local Vibrational Mode Analysis of π–Hole Interactions between Aryl Donors and Small Molecule Acceptors

11 aryl–lone pair and three aryl–anion π –hole interactions are investigated, along with the argon–benzene dimer and water dimer as reference compounds, utilizing the local vibrational mode theory, originally introduced by Konkoli and Cremer, to quantify the strength of the π –hole interaction in terms of a new local vibrational mode stretching force constant between the two engaged monomers, which can be conveniently used to compare different π –hole systems. Several factors have emerged which influence strength of the π –hole interactions, including aryl substituent effects, the chemical nature of atoms composing the aryl rings/ π –hole acceptors, and secondary bonding interactions between donors/acceptors. Substituent effects indirectly affect the π –hole interaction strength, where electronegative aryl-substituents moderately increase π –hole interaction strength. N-aryl members significantly increase π –hole interaction strength, and anion acceptors bind more strongly with the π –hole compared to charge neutral acceptors (lone–pair donors). Secondary bonding interactions between the acceptor and the atoms in the aryl ring can increase π –hole interaction strength, while hydrogen bonding between the π –hole acceptor/donor can significantly increase or decrease strength of the π –hole interaction depending on the directionality of hydrogen bond donation. Work is in progress expanding this research on aryl π –hole interactions to a large number of systems, including halides, CO, and OCH3− as acceptors, in order to derive a general design protocol for new members of this interesting class of compounds.

Non-Covalent Interactions in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry

The problem of non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds is a hot topic in modern chemistry, material science, crystal engineering and related fields of knowledge. Researchers in various fields of chemistry and other disciplines (physics, crystallography, computer science, etc.) are welcome to submit their works on this topic for our Special Issue “Non-Covalent Interactions in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry”. The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight and overview modern trends and draw the attention of the scientific community to various types of non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds. In this editorial, I would like to briefly highlight the main successes of our research group in the field of the fundamental study of non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds over the past 5 years.

New Crystal Forms for Biologically Active Compounds. Part 2: Anastrozole as N-Substituted 1,2,4-Triazole in Halogen Bonding and Lp-π Interactions with 1,4-Diiodotetrafluorobenzene

For an active pharmaceutical ingredient, it is important to stabilize its specific crystal polymorph. If the potential interconversion of various polymorphs is not carefully controlled, it may lead to deterioration of the drug’s physicochemical profile and, ultimately, its therapeutic efficacy. The desired polymorph stabilization can be achieved via co-crystallization with appropriate crystallophoric excipients. In this work, we identified an opportunity for co-crystallization of anastrozole (ASZ), a well-known aromatase inhibitor useful in second-line therapy of estrogen-dependent breast cancer, with a classical XB donor, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene (1,4-FIB). In the X-ray structures of ASZ·1.5 (1,4-FIB) co-crystal, different non-covalent interactions involving hydrogen and halogen atoms were detected and studied by quantum chemical calculations and QTAIM analysis at the ωB97XD/DZP-DKH level of theory.

Halogen Bonding Provides Heterooctameric Supramolecular Aggregation of Diaryliodonium Thiocyanate

The crystal structure of the newly synthesized 4-methoxyphenyl(phenyl)iodonium thiocyanate, [PhI(4-C6H4OMe)](SCN), represents the first example of 16-membered cyclic heterooctamer formed by halogen bonding between the iodonium cation and SCN−. Results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations followed by the topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) method at the ωB97XD/DZP-DKH level of theory reveal that energies of attractive intermolecular noncovalent interactions I···S and I···N (responsible for the formation of heterooctameric supramolecular clusters {PhI(4-C6H4OMe)}4·{SCN}4 in the solid state structure of [PhI(4-C6H4OMe)](SCN)) vary from 0.9 to 8.5 kcal/mol.
