Insights into the effects produced by doping of medium-sized boron clusters with ruthenium

Geometric and electronic diversity of metal doped boron clusters

Being intermediate between small compounds and bulk materials, nanoparticles possess unique properties different from those of atoms, molecules, and bulk matter. In the past two decades, a combination of cluster structure prediction algorithms and experimental spectroscopy techniques was successfully used for exploration of the ground-state structures of pure and metal-doped boron clusters. The fruitfulness of this dual approach is well illustrated by the discovery of intriguing microstructures and unique physicochemical properties such as aromaticity and bond fluxionality for both boron and metal-doped boron clusters. Our review starts with an overview of geometrical configurations of pure boron clusters B_n, which are presented by planar, nanotube, bilayer, fullerene-like and core-shell structures, in a wide range ofnvalues. We consider next recent advances in studies of boron clusters doped with metal atoms paying close and thoughtful attention to modifications of geometric and electronic structures of pure boron clusters by heteroatoms. Finally, we discuss the possibility of constructing boron-based nanomaterials with specific functions from metal-boron clusters. Despite a variety of fruitful results obtained in numerous studies of boron clusters, the exploration of boron-based chemistry has not yet reached its peak. The intensive research continues in this area, and it should be expected that it brings exciting discoveries of intriguing new structures.

Quasi-planar Co atom-doped boron cluster: CoB192

PURPOSE AND METHODS

A global search for the lowest energy structure of CoB₁₉^2- clusters was conducted.  RESULTS: Its ground state is a quasi-planar structure with the Co atom surrounded by a B₈ ring. The central Co atom has an oxidation state of +1 with d⁸ electron configuration. The wave function analysis showed that the Co-B interaction is not a covalent bond. The bonding strength of peripheral B-B bonds is stronger than that of inner ones. The inner B₈ ring bonds with outer boron atoms via σ- and π-type bonds.

CONCLUSION

CoB₁₉^2- shows remarkable aromatic character.

Search for the Decomposition Process of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene by an Evolutionary Algorithm

In this paper, we explored stable states in the system of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) crystal with a few additional hydrogen radicals (H_add's) using a structure-search scheme based on first-principles calculations and an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to get insights into the decomposition process of TNT. We introduced three evolutionary operators acting on H_add's and transforming only local structures of TNT molecules: "displacement", "permutation", and "mating". We searched for stable structures by increasing the number of H_add's (n) from 1 to 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 and constructed a convex-hull diagram for the formation energy from solid TNT and solid hydrogen. We showed that the system of n = 6 had the largest energy reduction, in which five of the eight TNT molecules in the calculation cell were transformed into NO, H₂O, C₂H₃N, C₂NO₃H₃, C₈N₂O₄H₇, C₉N₂O₈H₅, and C₁₄N₇O₁₂H₁₁. Analysis of the structural transformations observed during the EA search indicates that (1) the H_add's approaching the TNT molecules react with C, forming a six-membered ring, and with N and O in nitro groups, leaving the TNT molecules as NO, H₂O, C₂H₃N, and C₂NO₃H₃, and (2) the partially decomposed TNT molecules are bonded to one another via C, N, and O.

Structural evolution and relative stability of vanadium-doped boron clusters

Cluster is the intermediate of individual atom and larger agglomeration. The structural evolutions of clusters are critically important to explore the physical properties of bulk solids. Here, we carry out systematic structure predictions of medium-sized vanadium-doped boron clusters by using crystal structure analysis by particle swarm optimization method combined with density function theory calculations. A great deal of low-lying isomers with attractive geometries are discovered, such as the crown-like VB₁₈^-cluster and the drum-like VB₂₀^-cluster. Interestingly, the VB₁₂^-cluster possesses excellently relative stability due to its higher second-order difference and larger highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gap. The molecular orbitals (MOs) and adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) analysis indicate that the 3dorbitals of V atom and the 2pand 2sorbitals of B atoms are the primary constituents of the MOs, and the interactions between V and B atoms are the main factor for the robust stabilization of the anionic VB₁₂^-cluster. The present findings advance the understanding of the structural evolution of transition metal doped boron clusters and offer crucial insights for future experiments.

Functionalized nona-silicide [Si9R3] Zintl clusters: a new class of superhalogens

Superatoms, due to their various applications in redox and materials chemistry, have been a major topic of study in cluster science. Superhalogens constitute a special class of superatoms that mimic the chemistry of halogens and serve as building blocks of novel materials such as super and hyper salts, perovskite-based solar cells, solid-state electrolytes, and ferroelectric materials. These applications have led to a constant search for new class of superhalogens. In this study, using density functional theory, we show that recently synthesized [Si₉{Si (^tBu)₂H}₃] and [Si₉{Si (TMS)₃}₃] Zintl clusters not only behave like halogens but also when functionalized with suitable ligands exhibit superhalogen characteristics. Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analyses give insights into the electron-accepting nature of the Zintl clusters. Additional bonding techniques such as energy density at the bond critical point (BCP) and adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) gives complementary information about the nature of bonding in Si₉-based Zintl clusters. The potential of these Zintl clusters in the synthesis of new electrolytes in Li-ion batteries is also investigated.

Structure and Chemical Bonding in Medium-Size Boron Clusters Doped with Praseodymium

After reports of unusually low oxidation states of lanthanide elements in Ln-B clusters and their inverse sandwich geometrical topologies, the interest shifted from boride clusters doped with transition metal (TM) elements to the boride clusters doped with lanthanide atoms. In this work, the results obtained by a combined approach consisting of CALYPSO structure predictions and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the neutral and anionic PrB_n series, n = 7-16, are reported. A close agreement between our calculated vertical detachment energies and experimental data supports the accuracy of the results obtained. Contrary to the medium-size TM-doped medium boron clusters, which prefer three types of structural configurations, all lowest-energy states of the medium-size Pr-doped boron clusters have half-sandwich geometries. An interesting structural evolution pattern was found for both neutral and anionic PrB_n clusters at n = 7, 10, 13, and 16, which includes quasi-planar B₇ units half-sandwiching the Pr atom. Unusual oxidation numbers of +2 and +1 were found for the Pr atom in the PrB₇^- and PrB₈^- anions, respectively. Chemical bonding analysis for the neutral PrB₇ and PrB₁₃ clusters revealed that their high stability stems from interactions between Pr 5d and B 2p orbitals. A stable tubular-shaped PrB₃₀ cluster is proposed as a promising building block for boron-based nanotubes.

Structural transformations in boron clusters induced by metal doping

In the last decades, experimental techniques in conjunction with theoretical analyses have revealed the surprising structural diversity of boron clusters. Although the 2D to 3D transition thresholds are well-established, there is no certainty about the factors that determine the geometry adopted by these systems. The structural transformation induced by doping usually yields a minimum energy structure with a boron skeleton entirely different from that of the bare cluster. This review summarizes those clusters no larger than 40 boron atoms where one or two dopants show a radical transformation of the structure. Although the structures of these systems are not easy to predict, they often adopt familiar shapes such as umbrella-like, wheel, tubular, and cages in various cases.

Insights into the Structures and Bonding of Medium-Sized Cerium-Doped Boron Clusters

Since the discovery of metal-doped boron clusters attracted great significance to create a new class of materials, research interests have been directed to chemical bonding and structural evolution of lanthanide boride clusters. Here, we perform an extensive ground-state structure search for the CeB_n and CeB_n^- clusters in the size range from 9 to 18 using the Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization method and density functional theory optimization. It is found that the ground-state structures in both neutral and anionic series possess half-sandwich geometry. The host boron moiety in neutral series has a tendency to form borophene-like geometry. The pentagonal and hexagonal holes are more common in the larger anionic CeB_n^- series. The theoretical photoelectron spectroscopy has been simulated by applying time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The neutral CeB₁₄ cluster is identified as a magic cluster on the basis of its robust relative stability with respect to its neighbors. Electronic structure and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the CeB₁₄ cluster possesses a large HOMO-LUMO gap and enhanced stability with strong delocalized π and δ bonding via interactions between the Ce 5d- and B 2p-AOs.

Transition-metal-like bonding behaviors of a boron atom in a boron-cluster boronyl complex [(η7-B7)-B-BO]. Chem Sci 2021;12:8157-8164. [PMID: 34194706 PMCID: PMC8208299 DOI: 10.1039/d1sc00534k]

Boron displays many unusual structural and bonding properties due to its electron deficiency. Here we show that a boron atom in a boron monoxide cluster (B₉O⁻) exhibits transition-metal-like properties. Temperature-dependent photoelectron spectroscopy provided evidence of the existence of two isomers for B₉O⁻: the main isomer has an adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) of 4.19 eV and a higher energy isomer with an ADE of 3.59 eV. The global minimum of B₉O⁻ is found surprisingly to be an umbrella-like structure (C_6v, ¹A₁) and its simulated spectrum agrees well with that of the main isomer observed. A low-lying isomer (C_s, ¹A′) consisting of a BO unit bonded to a disk-like B₈ cluster agrees well with the 3.59 eV ADE species. The unexpected umbrella-like global minimum of B₉O⁻ can be viewed as a central boron atom coordinated by a η⁷-B₇ ligand on one side and a BO ligand on the other side, [(η⁷-B₇)-B-BO]⁻. The central B atom is found to share its valence electrons with the B₇ unit to fulfill double aromaticity, similar to that in half-sandwich [(η⁷-B₇)-Zn-CO]⁻ or [(η⁷-B₇)-Fe(CO)₃]⁻ transition-metal complexes. The ability of boron to form a half-sandwich complex with an aromatic ligand, a prototypical property of transition metals, brings out new metallomimetic properties of boron.

The global minimum of the B₉O⁻ cluster is found to have an umbrella-like structure, where the central B atom exhibits transition-metal-like bonding properties, coordinated by a η⁷-B₇ ligand on one side and a BO ligand on the other.

On the structure and reactivity of PtnCun (n = 1-7) alloy clusters

The structure, electronic and reactivity properties of Pt_nCu_n (n = 1-7) clusters are investigated in the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The most stable forms of the clusters are obtained by a structure search procedure based in simulated annealing. The results show that the Pt_nCu_n cluster alloys adopt layered structure motifs with segregation of the Cu and Pt species. The total magnetic moments of the clusters adopt the low spin configuration. The bimetallic cluster reactivity is investigated by using the ionization potential, electron affinity, and the d-band center, respectively. The results show that the Pt_nCu_n clusters with (n = 5-7) have similar vIP and vEA parameters compared to the unary Pt clusters, but the d-band center is slightly higher suggesting an enhanced reactivity for the bimetallic clusters. On the other hand, the molecular electrostatic potential shows that the Cu species increase the available active sites on the cluster surface. The data on the infrared spectra of the clusters is also provided. These results are useful to understand the fundamental properties of Pt-M bimetallic alloys in the subnanometer region.

Tuning of Structure Evolution and Electronic Properties through Palladium-Doped Boron Clusters: PdB16 as a Motif for Boron-Based Nanotubes

Transition metal-doped electronic deficiency boron clusters have led to a vast variety of electronic bonding properties in chemistry and materials science. We have determined the ground state structures of PdB_n^0/- (n = 10-20) clusters by performing CALYPSO search and density functional theory (DFT) optimization. The identified lowest energy structures for both neutral and anionic Pd-doped boron clusters follow the structure evolution from two dimensional (2D) planar configurations to 3D distorted Pd-centered drum-like or tubular structures. Photoelectron spectra are simulated by time-dependent DFT theoretical calculations, which is a powerful method to validate our obtained ground-state structures. More interestingly, two "magic" number clusters, PdB₁₂ and PdB₁₆, are found with enhanced stability in the middle size regime studied. Subsequently, molecular orbital and adaptive natural density partitioning analyses reveal that the high stability of the PdB₁₆ cluster originates from doubly σ π aromatic and bonding interactions of d-type atomic orbitals of the Pd atom with tubular B₁₆ units. The tubular C_8v PdB₁₆ cluster, with robust relative stability, is an ideal embryo for forming finite and infinite nanotube nanomaterials.

Structures, Electronic, and Spectral Properties of Doped Boron Clusters MB12 0/- (M = Li, Na, and K)

Structures and electronic properties of alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12 0/- (M = Li, Na, K) are determined using the CALYPSO method for the global minimum search followed by density functional theory. It is found that the global minima obtained for the neutral clusters correspond to the half-sandwich structure and those of the monoanionic clusters correspond to the boat-shaped structure. The neutral MB12 (M = Li, Na, K) can be considered as a member of the half-sandwich doped B12 clusters, and the geometrical pattern of anion MB12 - (M = Li, Na, K) is a new structure that is different from other doped B12 clusters. Natural population and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12 - are characterized as charge transfer complexes, M+B12 2-, resulting in symmetrically distributed chemical bonds and electrostatic interactions between cationic M+ and boron atoms. The calculated spectra indicate that MB12 0/- (M = Li, Na, K) has meaningful spectral features that can be compared with future experimental data. Our work enriches the varieties of geometrical structures of doped boron clusters and can provide much insight into boron nanomaterials.

New theoretical insights into high-coordination-number complexes in actinides-centered borane

The coordination number of a given element affects its behavior, and consequently, there is great interest in understanding the related chemistry, which could greatly promote the extension and development of new materials, but remains challenging. Herein, we report a new record high coordination number (CN) for actinides established in the cage-like An(BH)24 (An = Th to Cm) via using relativistic quantum chemistry methods. Analysis of U(BH)n (n = 1 to 24) confirmed these series of systems as being geometric minima, with the BH acting as a ligand located in the first shell around the uranium. In contrast, global searches revealed a low CN half-cage structure for UB24, which could be extended to the series of AnB24 materials and which prevails over the competing structural isomers, such as cages. The intrinsic geometric difference for AnB24 and An(BH)24 mainly arise from the B sp3 hybridization in borane inducing strong interactions between An 5f6d7s hybrid orbitals and B 2pz orbitals in An(BH)24 compared to that of AnB24. This fundamental trend presents a valuable insight for future experimental endeavors searching for isolable complexes with high-coordination actinide and provides details of a new structural motif of boron clusters and nanostructures.

Thermal Stability of Ag13- Clusters Studied by Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Identification of the geometric structures of silver clusters is of great importance in future nanotechnologies due to their superior properties. Nevertheless, some ground-state structures are still in academic debate, partly because the experiments and theoretical calculations are not performed at the same temperatures. For example, silver clusters usually have compact configurations. However, a combined experimental and theoretical study proposed that the most stable structure of Ag₁₃^- had a two-coordinated atom. By using the CALYPSO approach for the global minima search followed by first-principles calculations, we discovered that a more compact trilayer Ag₁₃^- cluster was the ground state, in accordance with another three works published recently. In addition, its O₂ adsorption structure is also energetically favored. By tracing characteristic bond changes in ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we confirmed that, compared with other isomers, this trilayer structure and its O₂ adsorption structure also had the highest thermal stability. This work emphasized the thermal stability concept in theoretical calculations, which may be a necessary supplement to explain the experimental observations on cluster science.

Structural evolution and electronic properties of medium-sized boron clusters doped with scandium

Doping of boron-based materials with transition metal atoms allows one to tune or modify the properties and structure of the materials. In this work, an extensive search for the global minima on potential energy surfaces of ScB _n and ScB[Formula: see text] clusters has been performed using the CALYPSO method. The structural evolution of scandium doped boron clusters of this range is found to proceed in three steps; namely, the formation of half-sandwich type structures is followed by the formation of drum-like structures with the Sc atom located at the center and terminates with the cage-like structures. It is also found that highly symmetrical geometric structures are more common for the smaller size range of [Formula: see text]. The neutral ScB₁₃ cluster is identified as magic on the basis of an analysis of relative stabilities in the ScB _n series. Our analysis of chemical bonding has shown that the stability of this cluster is mainly due to the formation of several delocalized [Formula: see text]-bonding molecular orbitals composed of Sc 3d and B 2s atomic orbitals. These bonds appear to be responsible for the enhanced stability of ScB₁₃ with respect to other Sc-doped boron clusters.

Predicting lanthanide boride inverse sandwich tubular molecular rotors with the smallest core-shell structure

Lanthanide-boron binary clusters possess interesting structures and bonding which may provide insights into designing new boride nanomaterials. Inspired by the recently discovered mono-decker inverse sandwich D_9h La₂B₉^- (¹A'₁) (1) and based on the extensive first-principles theory calculations, we predict herein the possible existence of a series of bi-decker inverse sandwich di-lanthanide boron complexes including D_9d La₂[B₁₈] (³A_1g) (2), D_9d La₂[B₁₈]^2- (¹A_1g) (3), and C_2h La₂[B₂@B₁₈] (¹A_g) (4) which all contain a tubular B_n ligand (n = 18, 20) sandwiched by two La atoms at the two ends. In these novel clusters, La₂[B₂@B₁₈] (4) as a tubular molecular rotor with the smallest core-shell structure reported to date in boron-based nanoclusters possesses a B₂-bar rotating constantly and almost freely inside the B₁₈ tube around it at room temperature. Detailed bonding analyses indicate that these complexes are stablized by effective (d-p)σ, (d-p)π, and (d-p)δ coordination interactions between the La centers and B_n bi-decker ligand. Six multi-center fluxional σ-bonds between the B₂-core and B₁₈ tube in La₂[B₂@B₁₈] (4) are found to be responsible for its unique fluxional behaviors. The IR and Raman spectra of the concerned species are simulated to facilitate their experimental characterization.

Evolutionary search for (M©B16)Q (M = Sc-Ni; Q = 0/-1) clusters: bowl/boat vs. tubular shape

Herein, using universal structure predictor: evolutionary xtallography (USPEX) method, followed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we performed global searches for the most stable structures of (M©B₁₆)^Q (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; Q = 0, -1) clusters. It was found that the obtained ground-state structures of (M©B₁₆)^Q clusters exhibited a distinct structural evolution as M changed from V to Ni: from bowl-shaped, to boat-shaped, to an M-centered tubular structure named wheel-shaped, to drum-shaped (the metal atom was adsorbed on top of the cross section of the B₁₆ species). Our analysis shows that hyper-coordination and the size of the metal atom are two competing factors determining the relative stability and topological properties of the (M©B₁₆)^0/-1 clusters, resulting in unprecedented structures for Sc, Ti, and Ni-doped clusters. The calculated binding energies for these new configurations are even larger than those of the previously synthesized B₁₆^-1, (Mn©B₁₆)^-1, and (Co©B₁₆)^-1 clusters, indicating their very good stability and possible experimental synthesis. A net charge transfer from the metal atom to the boron moiety occurs for all clusters, indicating that electrostatic interactions play an important role in the stability of these materials. Finally, the Sc©M₁₆ and Ti©B₁₆ clusters exhibit not only excellent thermal stability but also large first hyper-polarizability. Hence, they are expected to be potential innovative candidates for excellent electro-optical materials.

Probing the structure and electronic properties of beryllium doped boron clusters: A planar BeB16- cluster motif for metallo-borophene

Beryllium-doped boron clusters display essential similarities to borophene (boron sheet) with a molecular structure characterized by remarkable properties, such as anisotropy, metallicity and high conductivity. Here we have determined low-energy structures of BeBn0/- (n = 10-20) clusters by utilizing CALYPSO searching program and DFT optimization. The results indicated that most ground states of clusters prefer plane or quasi-plane structures by doped Be atom. A novel unexpected fascinating planar BeB16- cluster with C2v symmetry is uncovered which possesses robust relative stability. Furthermore, planar BeB16- offers a possibility to construct metallo-borophene nano-materials. Molecular orbital and chemical bonding analysis reveal the peculiarities of BeB16- cluster brings forth the aromaticity and the strong interaction of B-B σ-bonds in boron network.

Probing the structures and bonding of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters

Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (Bn-) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln2Bn- (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.
