Using para hydrogen induced polarization to study steps in the hydroformylation reaction

Advancing homogeneous catalysis for parahydrogen-derived hyperpolarisation and its NMR applications

Parahydrogen-induced polarisation (PHIP) is a nuclear spin hyperpolarisation technique employed to enhance NMR signals for a wide range of molecules. This is achieved by exploiting the chemical reactions of parahydrogen (para-H2), the spin-0 isomer of H2. These reactions break the molecular symmetry of para-H2 in a way that can produce dramatically enhanced NMR signals for reaction products, and are usually catalysed by a transition metal complex. In this review, we discuss recent advances in novel homogeneous catalysts that can produce hyperpolarised products upon reaction with para-H2. We also discuss hyperpolarisation attained in reversible reactions (termed signal amplification by reversible exchange, SABRE) and focus on catalyst developments in recent years that have allowed hyperpolarisation of a wider range of target molecules. In particular, recent examples of novel ruthenium catalysts for trans and geminal hydrogenation, metal-free catalysts, iridium sulfoxide-containing SABRE systems, and cobalt complexes for PHIP and SABRE are reviewed. Advances in this catalysis have expanded the types of molecules amenable to hyperpolarisation using PHIP and SABRE, and their applications in NMR reaction monitoring, mechanistic elucidation, biomedical imaging, and many other areas, are increasing.

Mechanistic analysis by NMR spectroscopy: A users guide

A 'principles and practice' tutorial-style review of the application of solution-phase NMR in the analysis of the mechanisms of homogeneous organic and organometallic reactions and processes. This review of 345 references summarises why solution-phase NMR spectroscopy is uniquely effective in such studies, allowing non-destructive, quantitative analysis of a wide range of nuclei common to organic and organometallic reactions, providing exquisite structural detail, and using instrumentation that is routinely available in most chemistry research facilities. The review is in two parts. The first comprises an introduction to general techniques and equipment, and guidelines for their selection and application. Topics include practical aspects of the reaction itself, reaction monitoring techniques, NMR data acquisition and processing, analysis of temporal concentration data, NMR titrations, DOSY, and the use of isotopes. The second part comprises a series of 15 Case Studies, each selected to illustrate specific techniques and approaches discussed in the first part, including in situ NMR (^1/2H, ^10/11B, ¹³C, ¹⁵N, ¹⁹F, ²⁹Si, ³¹P), kinetic and equilibrium isotope effects, isotope entrainment, isotope shifts, isotopes at natural abundance, scalar coupling, kinetic analysis (VTNA, RPKA, simulation, steady-state), stopped-flow NMR, flow NMR, rapid injection NMR, pure shift NMR, dynamic nuclear polarisation, ¹H/¹⁹F DOSY NMR, and in situ illumination NMR.

Mechanistic in situ investigation of heterogeneous hydrogenation over Rh/TiO2 catalysts: selectivity, pairwise route and catalyst nature

We report a catalyst with the highest selectivity toward pairwise hydrogen addition of 7% among supported metal catalysts, found as a result of variation of Rh/TiO₂ catalyst preparation procedures.

Data-powered augmented volcano plots for homogeneous catalysis

Given the computational resources available today, data-driven approaches can propel the next leap forward in catalyst design. Using a data-driven inspired workflow consisting of data generation, statistical analysis, and dimensionality reduction algorithms we explore trends surrounding the thermodynamics of a model hydroformylation reaction catalyzed by group 9 metals bearing phosphine ligands. Specifically, we introduce "augmented volcano plots" as a means to easily visualize the similarity of each catalyst's complete catalytic cycle energy profile to that of a hypothetical ideal reference profile without relying upon linear scaling relationships. In addition to quickly identifying catalysts that most closely match the ideal thermodynamic catalytic cycle energy profile, these maps also enable a more refined comparison of closely lying species in standard volcano plots. For the reaction studied here, they inherently uncover the presence of multiple sets of scaling relationships differentiated by metal type, where iridium catalysts follow distinct relationships from cobalt/rhodium catalysts and have profiles that more closely match the ideal thermodynamic profile. Reconstituted molecular volcano plots confirm the findings of the augmented volcanoes by showing that hydroformylation thermodynamics are governed by two distinct volcano shapes, one for iridium catalysts and a second for cobalt/rhodium species.
