Nazarov cyclisations initiated by DDQ-oxidised pentadienyl ether: a mechanistic investigation from the DFT perspective

DFT investigation of the DDQ-catalytic mechanism for constructing C-O bonds

In this study, we investigated the photo-catalytic mechanisms for the construction of C-O bonds from arenes (benzene, 2',6'-dimethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carboxylic acid, or 2,4-dichloro-1-fluorobenzene), catalyzed by 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ). All the structures for the Gibbs free surfaces were calculated at the M06-2X-D3/ma-def2-SVP level in the SMD solvent model. Also, TDDFT calculations of DDQ were performed at the PBE1PBE-D3/ma-def2-SVP level in the SMD solvent model. The computational results indicated that DDQ, serving as a photo-catalyst, would be excited under visible light of 450 nm, aligning well with experimental observations as reflected in the UV-vis spectrum. Gibbs free energy surface analyses of the three reactions suggested that the path involving 3DDQ* activating the reactant (-COOH, H2O, or CH3OH) is favorable. Additionally, the role of O2 was investigated, revealing that it could facilitate the recycling of DDQ by lowering the energy barrier for the conversion of the DDQH˙ radical (not DDQH2) into DDQ. The use of ρhole and ρele can reveal the photo-catalytic reaction and charge transfer processes, while localized orbital locator isosurfaces and electron spin density isosurface graphs were employed to analyze structures and elucidate the single electron distribution. These computational results offer valuable insights into the studied interactions and related processes, shedding light on the mechanisms governing C-O bond formation from arenes catalyzed by DDQ.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on the Mechanism of DDQ-Mediated Oxidative Cyclization of N-Aroylhydrazones

The controversial single-electron-transfer process, frequently proposed in many 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ)-mediated reactions, was investigated experimentally and theoretically using the oxidative cyclization of aroylhydrazone with DDQ. DDQ-mediated oxadiazole formation involves several processes, including cyclization to form an oxadiazole ring and N-H bond cleavage, either by proton, hydride, or hydrogen atom transfer. The detailed mechanistic study using the M06-2X density functional theory, and the 6-31+G(d,p) basis set, suggests that the pathways involving radical ion pair (RIP) intermediates, which resulted from single-electron transfer (SET), were found to be energetically nearly identical to the pathway without the SET. The substituent-dependent reactivity of oxadiazole formation was consistent with the free energy profiles of both pathways, with or without the SET. This result indicates that in addition to the electron-transfer pathway, the nucleophilic addition/elimination pathway for DDQ should be considered as a possible mechanism of the oxidative transformation reaction using DDQ.

Intramolecular Csp3-H/C-C bond amination of alkyl azides for the selective synthesis of cyclic imines and tertiary amines

The intramolecular Csp³–H and/or C–C bond amination is very important in modern organic synthesis due to its efficiency in the construction of diversified N-heterocycles. Herein, we report a novel intramolecular cyclization of alkyl azides for the synthesis of cyclic imines and tertiary amines through selective Csp³–H and/or C–C bond cleavage. Two C–N single bonds or a C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N double bond are efficiently constructed in these transformations. The carbocation mechanism differs from the reported metal nitrene intermediates and therefore enables metal-free and new transformation.

A novel intramolecular cyclization of alkyl azides for the synthesis of cyclic imines and tertiary amines has been developed. The aliphatic C–H or C–C bond was selectively cleaved with the efficient formation of two C–N single bonds or a CN double bond.
