Reversible alkene binding and allylic C-H activation with an aluminium(i) complex

C-H bond activation at antimony(III): synthesis and reactivity of Sb(III)-oxyaryl species

We report on the synthesis, structure and reactivity of [{NCNMe4}Sb(C6H2-tBu2-3,5-O-4)] (3), an organoantimony(III)-oxyaryl species obtained upon Csp2-H bond activation in a phenolate ligand and stabilised by the monoanionic pincer {NCNMe4}-. The mechanism leading to the formation of 3 is highly sensitive to steric considerations. It was probed experimentally and by DFT calculations, and a number of intermediates and related complexes were identified. All data agree with successive heterolytic bond cleaving and bond forming processes involving charged species, rather than a pathway involving free radicals as previously exemplified with congeneric bismuth species. The nucleophilic behaviour of the oxyaryl ligand in 3, a complex that features both zwitterionic and quinoidal attributes, was illustrated in derivatisation reactions. In particular, insertion of CS2 in the Sb-Coxyaryl bond generates [{NCNMe4}Sb(S2C-C6H2-tBu2-3,5-O-4)].

Alumanyl Reduction, Reductive Coupling and C-H Isomerization of Organic Nitriles

The behavior of the potassium alumanyl, [{SiNDipp}AlK]2 ({SiNDipp} = {CH2SiMe2N(Dipp)}2; Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3), toward organic nitriles has been investigated. In common with earlier studies of the reactivity of charge neutral Al(I) species with multiply bonded small molecules, it is suggested that the initial step in all the reactions involves [2 + 1] cycloaddition and the generation of an [η2-C=N-Al] alumina azacyclopropane unit. In the cases of o- and m-tolyl-substituted aryl nitriles, this species is too kinetically labile to allow its isolation and undergoes C-C coupling via immediate Al-C/C≡N insertion to yield the alumina diazabutadiene derivatives. In contrast, the increased steric profile of alkyl nitriles imposes a marked influence on the nature of the products formed. Consistent with the proposed sequential pathway, reaction of [{SiNDipp}AlK]2 with t-BuCN provides an isolable alumina cyclopropane species that is kinetically resistant to onward reaction with a further nitrile equivalent. While reduction in the alkyl nitrile steric demands by use of i-PrCN again facilitates C-C bond formation, the crowding of the Al center by the resultant alumina-diazabutadienediide moiety appears to be beyond the limit of kinetic viability, resulting in an unusual 2-fold C-H to N-H isomerization from one of the C-iso-propyl substituents and the isolation of a 1-alumina-2,5-diazabutadiene structure.

Suppressing Cis/Trans 'Ring-Flipping' in Organoaluminium(III)-2-Pyridyl Dimers-Design Strategies Towards Lewis Acid Catalysts for Alkene Oligomerisation

Owing to its high natural abundance compared to the commonly used transition (precious) metals, as well as its high Lewis acidity and ability to change oxidation state, aluminium has recently been explored as the basis for a range of single-site catalysts. This paper aims to establish the ground rules for the development of a new type of cationic alkene oligomerisation catalyst containing two Al(III) ions, with the potential to act co-operatively in stereoselective assembly. Five new dimers of the type [R2Al(2-py')]2 (R=Me, iBu; py'=substituted pyridyl group) with different substituents on the Al atoms and pyridyl rings have been synthesised. The formation of the undesired cis isomers can be suppressed by the presence of substituents on the 6-position of the pyridyl ring due to steric congestion, with DFT calculations showing that the selection of the trans isomer is thermodynamically controlled. Calculations show that demethylation of the dimers [Me2Al(2-py')]2 with Ph3C+ to the cations [{MeAl(2-py')}2(μ-Me)]+ is highly favourable and that the desired trans disposition of the 2-pyridyl ring units is influenced by steric effects. Preliminary experimental studies confirm that demethylation of [Me2Al(6-MeO-2-py)]2 can be achieved using [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4].

Reversible [4 + 1] Cycloaddition of Arenes by a "Naked" Acyclic Aluminyl Compound

The large steric profile of the N-heterocyclic boryloxy ligand, -OB(NDippCH)2, and its ability to stabilize the metal-centered HOMO, are exploited in the synthesis of the first example of a "naked" acyclic aluminyl complex, [K(2.2.2-crypt)][Al{OB(NDippCH)2}2]. This system, which is formed by substitution at AlI (rather than reduction of AlIII), represents the first O-ligated aluminyl compound and is shown to be capable of hitherto unprecedented reversible single-site [4 + 1] cycloaddition of benzene. This chemistry and the unusual regioselectivity of the related cycloaddition of anthracene are shown to be highly dependent on the availability (or otherwise) of the K+ countercation.

Recent advances in the chemistry of isolable carbene analogues with group 13-15 elements

Carbenes (R2C:), compounds with a divalent carbon atom containing only six valence shell electrons, have evolved into a broader class with the replacement of the carbene carbon or the RC moiety with main group elements, leading to the creation of main group carbene analogues. These analogues, mirroring the electronic structure of carbenes (a lone pair of electrons and an empty orbital), demonstrate unique reactivity. Over the last three decades, this area has seen substantial advancements, paralleling the innovations in carbene chemistry. Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of unique carbene analogues, such as monocoordinate aluminylenes, nitrenes, and bismuthinidenes, notable for their extraordinary properties and diverse reactivity, offering promising applications in small molecule activation. This review delves into the isolable main group carbene analogues that are in the forefront from 2010 and beyond, spanning elements from group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl), group 14 (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) and group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Specifically, this review focuses on the potential amphiphilic species that possess both lone pairs of electrons and vacant orbitals. We detail their comprehensive synthesis and stabilization strategies, outlining the reactivity arising from their distinct structural characteristics.

Alumanyl-Samarium(II): Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity Studies

Metal-metal bonded species involving lanthanides are intriguing but rare. The recently reported salt metathesis reaction of an Al anion and SmI2(thf)2 yields novel heterometallic compound possessing two distinctive Al-Sm bonds. Although the Al-Sm bonds were considerably long [3.518(1) and 3.543(1) Å], DFT calculations indicated polar character of the Alδ--Smδ+ bonds. This is the first example of lanthanide species containing X-type Al ligands. Reactivity studies have demonstrated that the introduction of Sm(II) produces unique reactivity. The reaction with carbodiimide led to an insertion of carbodiimide into the Al-Sm bonds and reductive coupling of carbodiimide to create an oxalamidinate moiety, facilitated by Sm(II). Exposure of the Al-Sm-Al complex toward ethylene furnished a Sm(II) salt of anionic aluminacyclopropane that was spontaneously isomerized to a 1,4-dialuminacyclohexane derivative. The important role of Sm(II) to facilitate the ring expansion through an alkyl-relay mechanism was elucidated by DFT calculations.

Aluminyl derived ethene functionalization with heteroallenes, leading to an intramolecular ligand rearrangement

The aluminacyclopropane K[Al(NON)(η-C2H4)] ([NON]2- = [O(SiMe2NDipp)2]2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) reacts with CO2 and iPrNCNiPr to afford ring-expanded products of C-C bond formation. The latter system undergoes a 1,3-silyl retro-Brook rearrangement of the NON-group, to afford the [NNO]2- ligand ([NNO]2- = [N(Dipp)SiMe2N(Dipp)SiMe2O]2-). The mechanism of transformation was examined by density functional theory (DFT).

Isolation and Reactivity of Homoleptic Diphosphene Lead Complexes

Due to their limited capacity for π-backdonation, isolation of π-complexes of main-group elements remains a great challenge. We report herein the synthesis of a homoleptic diphosphene lead complex (2) from the degradation of P4 with a bis(germylene)-stabilized Pb(0) complex. Structural and computational studies showed that 2 possesses significant π bonding interactions between Pb atom and diphosphene ligands, which is reminiscent of transition-metal diphosphene complexes. Consistent with its unique electronic structure, complex 2 can deliver Pb(0) atoms to perform redox reaction with an iminoquinone to produce a cyclic plumbylene (4) and perform 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-dimethylimidazol-1-ylidene (IMe2 Me2 ) induced phosphorus cation abstraction to give an anionic PbP3 complex (6).

Seven-Membered Cyclic Diamidoalumanyls of Heavier Alkali Metals: Structures and C-H Activation of Arenes

Like the previously reported potassium-based system, rubidium and cesium reduction of [{SiNDipp}AlI] ({SiNDipp} = {CH2SiMe2NDipp}2) with the heavier alkali metals [M = Rb and Cs] provides dimeric group 1 alumanyl derivatives, [{SiNDipp}AlM]2. In contrast, similar treatment with sodium results in over-reduction and incorporation of a formal equivalent of [{SiNDipp}Na2] into the resultant sodium alumanyl species. The dimeric K, Rb, and Cs compounds display a variable efficacy toward the C-H oxidative addition of arene C-H bonds at elevated temperatures (Cs > Rb > K, 110 °C) to yield (hydrido)(organo)aluminate species. Consistent with the synthetic experimental observations, computational (DFT) assessment of the benzene C-H activation indicates that rate-determining attack of the Al(I) nucleophile within the dimeric species is facilitated by π-engagement of the arene with the electrophilic M+ cation, which becomes increasingly favorable as group 1 is descended.

Evidence for Carbene Intermediates in Isocyanide Homologation by Aluminium(I)

The C-C bond formation between C1 molecules plays an important role in chemistry as manifested by the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process. Serving as models for the FT process, we report here the reactions between a neutral AlI complex (Me NacNac)Al (1, Me NacNac=HC[(CMe)(NDipp)]2 , Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and various isocyanides. The step-by-step coupling mechanism was studied in detail by low-temperature NMR monitoring, isotopic labeling, as well as quantum chemical calculations. Three different products were isolated in reaction of 1 with the sterically encumbered 2,6-bis(benzhydryl)-4-Me-phenyl isocyanide (BhpNC). These products substantiate carbene intermediates. The reaction between 1 and adamantyl isocyanide (AdNC) generated a trimerization product, and a corresponding carbene intermediate could be trapped in the form of a molybdenum(0) complex. Tri-, tetra-, and even pentamerization products were isolated with the sterically less congested phenyl and p-methoxyphenyl isocyanides (PhNC and PMPNC) with concurrent construction of quinoline or indole heterocycles. Overall, this study provides evidence for carbene intermediates in FT-type chemistry of aluminium(I) and isocyanides.

Three-Membered Aluminacycles

Three-membered-ring scaffolds of carbocycles, namely, cyclopropanes and cyclopropenes, are ubiquitous in natural products and pharmaceutical molecules. These molecules exhibit a peculiar reactivity, and their applications as synthetic intermediates and versatile building blocks in organic synthesis have been extensively studied over the past century. The incorporation of heteroatoms into three-membered cyclic structures has attracted significant attention, reflecting fundamental differences in their electronic/geometric structures and reactivities compared to their carbon congeners and their associated potential for exploitation in applications. Recently, the chemistry of low-valent aluminum species, alumylenes, dialumenes, and aluminyl anions, has dramatically developed, which has allowed access to hitherto unprecedented aluminacycles. This Perspective focuses upon advances in the chemistry of three-membered aluminacycles, including their synthetic protocols, spectroscopic and structural properties, and reactivity toward various substrates and small molecules.

Potassium Aluminyl Promoted Carbonylation of Ethene

The potassium aluminyl [K{Al(NON^Dipp)}]₂ ([NON^Dipp]²⁻=[O{SiMe₂NDipp}₂]²⁻, Dipp=2,6‐iPr₂C₆H₃) activates ethene towards carbonylation with CO under mild conditions. An isolated bis‐aluminacyclopropane compound reacted with CO via carbonylation of an Al−C bond, followed by an intramolecular hydrogen shift to form K₂[Al(NON^Dipp)(μ‐CH₂CH=CO‐1κ²C^1,3‐2κO)Al(NON^Dipp)Et]. Restricting the chemistry to a mono‐aluminium system allowed isolation of [Al(NON^Dipp)(CH₂CH₂CO‐κ²C^1,3)]⁻, which undergoes thermal isomerisation to form the [Al(NON^Dipp)(CH₂CH=CHO‐κ²C,O)]⁻ anion. DFT calculations highlight the stabilising influence of incorporated benzene at multiple steps in the reaction pathways.

Geminal C-Cl and Si-Cl bond activation of chloromethanes and chlorosilanes by gallanediyl LGa

The activation of relatively inert E-X σ-bonds by low-valent main group metal complexes is receiving increasing interest. We here confirm the promising potential of gallanediyl LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Dip)]₂, Dip = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃) to activate E-Cl (E = C, Si) σ-bonds of group 14 element compounds. Equimolar reactions of LGa with chloromethanes and chlorosilanes EH_xCl_4-x (E = C, x = 0-2; E = Si, x = 0, 1) occurred with E-Cl bond insertion and formation of gallylmethanes and -silanes L(Cl)GaEH_xCl_3-x (E = C, x = 2 (1), 1 (2), 0 (3); E = Si, x = 1 (4)). In contrast, consecutive insertion into a geminal E-Cl bond was observed with two equivalents of LGa, yielding digallyl complexes [L(Cl)Ga]₂EH_xCl_2-x (E = C, x = 2 (5); E = Si, x = 1 (6), 0 (7)). Compounds 1-7 were characterized by heteronuclear NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ²⁹Si (4, 6)), IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and their solid-state structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).

CH Activation of Cationic Bismuth Amides: Heteroaromaticity, Derivatization, and Lewis Acidity

Cationization of Bi(NPh₂)₃ has recently been reported to allow access to single- and double-CH activation reactions, followed by selective transformation of Bi-C into C-X functional groups (X = electrophile). Here we show that this approach can successfully be transferred to a range of bismuth amides with two aryl groups at the nitrogen, Bi(NR^aryl₂)₃. Exchange of one nitrogen-bound aryl group for an alkyl substituent gave the first example of a homoleptic bismuth amide with a mixed aryl/alkyl substitution pattern at the nitrogen, Bi(NPhiPr)₃. This compound is susceptible to selective N-N radical coupling in its neutral form and also undergoes selective CH activation when transformed into a cationic species. The second CH activation is blocked due to the absence of a second aryl moiety at nitrogen. The Lewis acidity of neutral bismuth amides is compared with that of cationic species "[Bi(aryl)(amide)(L)_n]⁺" and "[Bi(aryl)₂(L)_n]⁺" based on the (modified) Gutmann-Beckett method (L = tetrahydrofuran or pyridine). The heteroaromatic character of [Bi(C₆H₃R)₂NH(triflate)] compounds, which are iso-valence-electronic with anthracene, is investigated by theoretical methods. Analytical methods used in this work include nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations.

Controlling Oxidative Addition and Reductive Elimination at Tin(I) via Hemi-Lability

We report on the synthesis of a distannyne supported by a pincer ligand bearing pendant amine donors that is capable of reversibly activating E-H bonds at one or both of the tin centres through dissociation of the hemi-labile N-Sn donor/acceptor interactions. This chemistry can be exploited to sequentially (and reversibly) assemble mixed-valence chains of tin atoms of the type ArSn{Sn(Ar)H}_n SnAr (n=1, 2). The experimentally observed (decreasing) propensity towards chain growth with increasing chain length can be rationalized both thermodynamically and kinetically by the electron- withdrawing properties of the -Sn(Ar)H- backbone units generated via oxidative addition.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

Seven-Membered Cyclic Potassium Diamidoalumanyls

The seven-membered cyclic potassium alumanyl species, [{SiN^Mes }AlK]₂ [{SiN^Mes }={CH₂ SiMe₂ N(Mes)}₂ ; Mes=2,4,6-Me₃ C₆ H₂ ], which adopts a dimeric structure supported by flanking K-aryl interactions, has been isolated either by direct reduction of the iodide precursor, [{SiN^Mes }AlI], or in a stepwise manner via the intermediate dialumane, [{SiN^Mes }Al]₂ . Although the intermediate dialumane has not been observed by reduction of a Dipp-substituted analogue (Dipp=2,6-i-Pr₂ C₆ H₃ ), partial oxidation of the potassium alumanyl species, [{SiN^Dipp }AlK]₂ , where {SiN^Dipp }={CH₂ SiMe₂ N(Dipp)}₂ , provided the extremely encumbered dialumane [{SiN^Dipp }Al]₂ . [{SiN^Dipp }AlK]₂ reacts with toluene by reductive activation of a methyl C(sp³ )-H bond to provide the benzyl hydridoaluminate, [{SiN^Dipp }AlH(CH₂ Ph)]K, and as a nucleophile with BPh₃ and RN=C=NR (R=i-Pr, Cy) to yield the respective Al-B- and Al-C-bonded potassium aluminaborate and alumina-amidinate products. The dimeric structure of [{SiN^Dipp }AlK]₂ can be disrupted by partial or complete sequestration of potassium. Equimolar reactions with 18-crown-6 result in the corresponding monomeric potassium alumanyl, [{SiN^Dipp }Al-K(18-cr-6)], which provides a rare example of a direct Al-K contact. In contrast, complete encapsulation of the potassium cation of [{SiN^Dipp }AlK]₂ , either by an excess of 18-cr-6 or 2,2,2-cryptand, allows the respective isolation of bright orange charge-separated species comprising the 'free' [{SiN^Dipp }Al]^- alumanyl anion. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on this moiety indicate HOMO-LUMO energy gaps in the of order 200-250 kJ mol^-1 .

Reversible and Irreversible [2+2] Cycloaddition Reactions of Heteroallenes to a Gallaphosphene

[2+2] Cycloaddition reactions of gallaphosphene L(Cl)GaPGaL 1 (L=HC[C(Me)N(2,6-i-Pr2 C6 H3 )]2 ) with carbodiimides [C(NR)2 ; R=i-Pr, Cy] and isocyanates [RNCO; R=Et, i-Pr, Cy] yielded four-membered metallaheterocycles LGa(Cl)P[μ-C(X)NR]GaL (X=NR, R=i-Pr 2, Cy 3; X=O, R=Et 4, i-Pr 5, Cy 6). Compounds 4-6 reversibly react with CO2 via [2+2] cycloaddition at ambient temperature to the six-membered metallaheterocycles LGa(Cl)P[μ-C(O)O]-μ-C(O)N(R)GaL (R=Et 7, i-Pr 8, Cy 9). Compounds 2-9 were characterized by IR and heteronuclear (1 H, 13 C{1 H}, 31 P{1 H}) NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, while quantum chemical calculations provided a deeper understanding on the energetics of the reactions.

Factors Controlling the Aluminum(I)-meta-Selective C-H Activation in Arenes

The so far poorly understood factors controlling the complete meta-selectivity observed in the C-H activation reactions of alkylarenes promoted by aluminyl anions have been explored in detail by means of Density Functional Theory calculations. To this end, a combination of state-of-the-art computational methods, namely the activation strain model of reactivity and energy decomposition analysis, has been applied to quantitatively unveil the origin of the selectivity of the transformation as well as the influence of the associated potassium cation. It is found that the selectivity takes place during the initial nucleophilic addition step where the key LP(Al)→π*(C=C) molecular orbital interaction is more stabilizing for the meta-pathway, which results in a stronger interaction between the reactants along the entire transformation.

Probing the Extremes of Covalency in M-Al bonds: Lithium and Zinc Aluminyl Compounds

Synthetic routes to lithium, magnesium, and zinc aluminyl complexes are reported, allowing for the first structural characterization of an unsupported lithium-aluminium bond. Crystallographic and quantum-chemical studies are consistent with the presence of a highly polar Li-Al interaction, characterized by a low bond order and relatively little charge transfer from Al to Li. Comparison with magnesium and zinc aluminyl systems reveals changes to both the M-Al bond and the (NON)Al fragment (where NON=4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene), consistent with a more covalent character, with the latter complex being shown to react with CO₂ via a pathway that implies that the zinc centre acts as the nucleophilic partner.

A Novel Reactivity of Phosphanylalumane (>P-Al<): Reversible Addition of a Saturated Interelement Bond to Olefins

The reversible addition of olefins to a phosphanylalumane, P-Al single-bond species, was investigated. The P-Al bond added to ethylene and relatively small terminal alkenes (propylene and hex-1-ene) at room temperature to give the corresponding alkene adducts. Heating the terminal alkene adducts released the corresponding alkenes and regenerated the P-Al bond, but no release of ethylene was observed even under vacuum conditions. The reactivity of ethylene adduct as a new saturated C₂ vicinal P/Al-based FLP was also investigated. The ethylene adduct was found to undergo complexation with nitriles to give the corresponding nitrile adducts to the Al center, which retained the ethylene tether as in the case of the corresponding P/B-based FLP. However, the reactivity of ethylene toward CO₂ and benzaldehyde differed from that of the P/B system giving the corresponding adducts.

"Give me five" - an amino imidazoline-2-imine ligand stabilises the first neutral five-membered cyclic triel(I) carbenoides

We present the first cyclic five-membered triel(i) carbenoides E(AmIm) for E = Ga, In, Tl; AmIm = amido imidazoline-2-imine, which fill the current gap between four- and six-membered triel(i) carbenoides supported by HGiso and HNacNac. Ga(AmIm) can act as a strong σ-donor ligand in transition metal complexes, while the intermediacy of the Al(i) carbenoide Al(AmIm) is rationalised based on the isolation of an Al(iii) insertion product.

Superseding β-Diketiminato Ligands: An Amido Imidazoline-2-Imine Ligand Stabilizes the Exhaustive Series of B=X Boranes (X=O, S, Se, Te)

Boron reluctantly forms B=X (X=O, S, Se, Te) moieties, which has stimulated the quest for such species in the past few years. Based on the N,N'-chelating β-diketiminato ligand (HNacNac), a new amido imidazoline-2-imine ligand system (HAmIm) is presented, giving rise to the isolation of an exhaustive series of Lewis acid free, monomeric chalcogen B=X boranes with documented π-bond character between boron and the chalcogen. The chalcogenoboranes are isoelectronic and isolobal to the respective ketones. The chemical behavior of the oxoborane (B=O) strongly resembles the classical carbonyl reactivity in C=O bonds. The improved stability provided by HAmIm arises from the formation of more-stable five-membered boron chelates versus the six-membered NacNac analogues and from the imidazoline-2-imine moiety providing enhanced σ- and π-donation. The HAmIm ligand class may supersede the widely employed NacNac system in certain applications.

Chemoselective C-C σ-Bond Activation of the Most Stable Ring in Biphenylene*

The chemoselective cleavage of a six-membered aromatic ring in biphenylene is reported using an aluminum(I) complex. This type of selectivity is unprecedented. In every example of transition metal mediated C-C σ-bond activation reported to date, the reaction occurs at the central four-membered ring of biphenylene. Insight into the origin of chemoselectivity was obtained through a detailed mechanistic analysis (isolation of an intermediate, DFT studies, activation strain analysis). In conclusion, the divergent reactivity can be attributed to differences in both the symmetry and radial extension of the frontier molecular orbitals of the aluminum(I) fragment compared to that of common transition metal fragments.

A Simple Homoleptic Gallium(I) Olefin Complex: Mimicking Transition-Metal Chemistry at a Main-Group Metal?

The earth-metal olefin complex [GaI (COD)2 ]+ [Al(ORF )4 ]- (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene; RF =C(CF3 )3 ) constitutes the first homoleptic olefin complex of any main-group metal accessible as a bulk compound. It is straight forward to prepare in good yield and constitutes an olefin complex of a main-group metal that-similar to many transition-metals-may adopt the +1 and +3 oxidation states opening potential applications. Crystallographic-, vibrational- and computational investigations give an insight to the atypical bonding between an olefin and a main-group metal. They are compared to classical transition-metal relatives.

3,5-Diphenyl-2-phosphafuran: Synthesis, Structure, and Thermally Reversible [4 + 2] Cycloaddition Chemistry

Treatment of trans-chalcone with dibenzo-7-phosphanorbornadiene EtOPA (A = C₁₄H₁₀, anthracene), a source of ethoxyphosphinidene, followed by formal elimination of ethanol yields 3,5-diphenyl-2-phosphafuran (DPF) in 43% yield. We show that the phosphadiene moiety of DPF is a potent diene in the Diels-Alder reaction and reacts with dienophiles dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DPF·DMAD, 68%), norbornene (DPF·norbornene, 73%), and ethylene (DPF·C₂H₄, 80%) under ambient conditions. Mild heating of DPF·C₂H₄ results in the corresponding retro-Diels-Alder reaction, establishing DPF as a molecule that is able to reversibly bind ethylene.

Activation of Ethylene by N-Heterocyclic Carbene Coordinated Magnesium(I) Compounds

Reactions of a series of magnesium(I) compounds with ethylene, in the presence of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), have been explored. Treating [{(^Mes Nacnac)Mg}₂ ] (^Mes Nacnac=[HC(MeCNMes)₂ ]^- , Mes=mesityl) with an excess of ethylene in the presence of two equivalents of :C{(MeNCMe)₂ } (TMC) leads to the formal reductive coupling of ethylene, and formation of the 1,2-dimagnesiobutane complex, [{(^Mes Nacnac)(TMC)Mg}₂ (μ-C₄ H₈ )]. In contrast, when the reaction is repeated in the presence of three equivalents of TMC, a mixture of the β-diketiminato magnesium ethyl, [(^Mes Nacnac)(TMC)MgEt], and the NHC coordinated magnesium diamide, [(^Mes Nacnac^-H )Mg(TMC)₂ ], results. Four related products, [(^Ar Nacnac)(TMC)MgEt] (Ar=2,6-dimethylphenyl (Xyl) or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dip)) and [(^Ar Nacnac^-H )Mg(TMC)₂ ] (Ar=Xyl or Dip), were similarly synthesised and crystallographically characterized. Computational studies have been employed to investigate the mechanisms of the two observed reaction types, which appear dependent on the substitution pattern of the magnesium(I) compound, and the stoichiometric equivalents of TMC used in the reactions.

Arene C-H Activation at Aluminium(I): meta Selectivity Driven by the Electronics of SN Ar Chemistry

The reactivity of the electron-rich anionic AlI aluminyl compound K2 [(NON)Al]2 (NON=4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene) towards mono- and disubstituted arenes is reported. C-H activation chemistry with n-butylbenzene gives exclusively the product of activation at the arene meta position. Mechanistically, this transformation proceeds in a single step via a concerted Meisenheimer-type transition state. Selectivity is therefore based on similar electronic factors to classical SN Ar chemistry, which implies the destabilisation of transition states featuring electron-donating groups in either ortho or para positions. In the cases of toluene and the three isomers of xylene, benzylic C-H activation is also possible, with the product(s) formed reflecting the feasibility (or otherwise) of competing arene C-H activation at a site which is neither ortho nor para to a methyl substituent.

Boosting Low-Valent Aluminum(I) Reactivity with a Potassium Reagent

The reagent RK [R=CH(SiMe3 )2 or N(SiMe3 )2 ] was expected to react with the low-valent (DIPP BDI)Al (DIPP BDI=HC[C(Me)N(DIPP)]2 , DIPP=2,6-iPr-phenyl) to give [(DIPP BDI)AlR]- K+ . However, deprotonation of the Me group in the ligand backbone was observed and [H2 C=C(N-DIPP)-C(H)=C(Me)-N-DIPP]Al- K+ (1) crystallized as a bright-yellow product (73 %). Like most anionic AlI complexes, 1 forms a dimer in which formally negatively charged Al centers are bridged by K+ ions, showing strong K+ ⋅⋅⋅DIPP interactions. The rather short Al-K bonds [3.499(1)-3.588(1) Å] indicate tight bonding of the dimer. According to DOSY NMR analysis, 1 is dimeric in C6 H6 and monomeric in THF, but slowly reacts with both solvents. In reaction with C6 H6 , two C-H bond activations are observed and a product with a para-phenylene moiety was exclusively isolated. DFT calculations confirm that the Al center in 1 is more reactive than that in (DIPP BDI)Al. Calculations show that both AlI and K+ work in concert and determines the reactivity of 1.

Activation and Functionalization of C-C σ Bonds of Alkylidene Cyclopropanes at Main Group Centers

Aluminum(I) and magnesium(I) compounds are reported for the C-C σ-bond activation of strained alkylidene cyclopropanes. These reactions result in the formal addition of the C-C σ bond to the main group center either at a single site (Al) or across a metal-metal bond (Mg-Mg). Mechanistic studies suggest that rather than occurring by a concerted oxidative addition, these reactions involve stepwise processes in which substrate binding to the main group metal acts as a precursor to α- or β-alkyl migration steps that break the C-C σ bond. This mechanistic understanding is used to develop the magnesium-catalyzed hydrosilylation of the C-C σ bonds of alkylidene cyclopropanes.

Recent advances in low oxidation state aluminium chemistry

The synthesis and isolation of novel low oxidation state aluminium (Al) compounds has seen relatively slow progress over the 30 years since such species were first isolated. This is largely due to the significant challenges in isolating these thermodynamically unstable compounds. Despite challenges with isolation, their reactivity has been widely explored and they have been utilized in a wide range of processes including the activation of strong chemicals bonds, as ligands to transition metals and in the formation of heterobimetallic M-M compounds. As such, attempts to isolate novel low oxidation state Al compounds have continued in earnest and in the last few years huge advances have been made. In this review we highlight the remarkable recent developments in the low oxidation state chemistry of aluminium and discuss the variety of new reactions these compounds have made possible.

Shedding Light on the Diverse Reactivity of NacNacAl with N-Heterocycles

The aluminum(I) compound NacNacAl (NacNac=[ArNC(Me)CHC(Me)NAr]^- , Ar=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ , 1) shows diverse and substrate-controlled reactivity in reactions with N-heterocycles. 4-Dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), a basic substrate in which the 4-position is blocked, induces rearrangement of NacNacAl by shifting a hydrogen atom from the methyl group of the NacNac backbone to the aluminum center. In contrast, C-H activation of the methyl group of 4-picoline takes place to produce a species with a reactive terminal methylene. Reaction of 1 with 3,5-lutidine results in the first example of an uncatalyzed, room-temperature cleavage of an sp² C-H bond (in the 4-position) by an Al^I species. Another reactivity mode was observed for quinoline, which undergoes 2,2'-coupling. Finally, the reaction of 1 with phthalazine produces the product of N-N bond cleavage.

The unique β-diketiminate ligand in aluminum(i) and gallium(i) chemistry

Herein we present an overview of the last 10 years for aluminum(i) and gallium(i) stabilized by β-diketiminate ligands that undergo a series of oxidative addition reactions with molecules containing single and multiple bonds.

Salt metathesis as an alternative approach to access aluminium(i) and gallium(i) β-diketiminates

Aluminium(i) and gallium(i) β-diketiminates are accessed by a new route that provides better overall yields. In the case of aluminium it is also much faster, but some molecules turn into a dead end and merge into a dinuclear aluminium(iii) hydride.
