Enhancing the colorimetric detection of H2O2 and ascorbic acid on polypyrrole coated fluconazole-functionalized POMOFs

N,Si co-doped GQDs: Facile green preparation and application in visual identifying dihydroxybenzene isomers and selective quantification of catechol, hydroquinone and antioxidants

A green economical procedure for preparing N,Si co-doped graphene quantum dots (N,Si-GQDs) using waste toners and ethylene diamine was reported, which not only minimizes waste and promotes recycling but also offers an alternative method for producing N,Si-GQDs. At a pH of 8.5, hydroquinone and catechol underwent oxidation in the presence of air, resulting in the formation of diquinones, specifically p-phenyldiquinone and o-phenyldiquinone. Resorcinol, on the other hand, was converted into monoquinone. The interaction between diquinones and N,Si-GQDs caused a linear fluorescence quenching effect when catechol and hydroquinone were present. However, this effect was minimal in the case of resorcinol. Furthermore, the antioxidants glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AA) were observed to disrupt the redox equilibrium of catechol and o-phenyldiquinone, leading to the activation of fluorescence. Conversely, hydroquinone and p-phenyldiquinone, due to the highly stable and symmetrical structure of p-phenyldiquinone, did not exhibit this fluorescence activation. Based on the described "Off-On" sensor system, it was possible to visually identify dihydroxybenzene isomers and selectively quantify catechol and hydroquinone in environmental samples, as well as GSH and AA in human serum. The method detection limits were 0.93, 1.35, 2.34, and 1.37 μM for catechol, hydroquinone, GSH, and AA, respectively. In conclusion, the presented procedure offers several advantages, including environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and a means of recycling waste toners. It also demonstrates the successful synthesis of N,Si-GQDs, as well as the potential for their application in the "Off-On" sensor system for the detection and quantification of various analytes.

Highly Active CoRh Graphitic Nanozyme for Colorimetric Sensing in Real Samples

Rh-based nanozymes show high catalytic efficiency, specific surface area, good stability, and unique physicochemical properties, while magnetic nanozymes facilitate the magnetic separation of detection samples under an external magnetic field for improved sensitivity. However, magnetic Rh nanozymes, especially those with excellent stability, have not been reported. Herein, we apply the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to prepare a CoRh graphitic nanozyme (termed as CoRh@G nanozyme), which structurally consists of CoRh nanoalloy encapsulated by a few layers of graphene for sensitive colorimetric sensing applications. The proposed CoRh@G nanozyme has superior peroxidase (POD)-like activity, and it shows higher affinity of the CoRh@G nanozyme than horseradish peroxidase (HRP) toward 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzydine (TMB) oxidation. In addition, the CoRh@G nanozyme shows high durability and superior recyclability owing to its protective graphitic shell. The outstanding merits of the CoRh@G nanozyme allow its use for quantitative colorimetric detection of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA), showing high sensitivity and good selectivity. Moreover, it shows satisfactory performance for AA detection in commercial beverages and energy drinks. The proposed CoRh@G nanozyme-based colorimetric sensing platform shows great promise in point-of-care (POC) visual monitoring.

Exploring the Reactivity of Polyoxometalates toward Proteins: From Interactions to Mechanistic Insights

The latest advances in the study of the reactivity of metal-oxo clusters toward proteins showcase how fundamental insights obtained so far open new opportunities in biotechnology and medicine. In this Perspective, these studies are discussed through the lens of the reactivity of a family of soluble anionic metal-oxo nanoclusters known as polyoxometalates (POMs). POMs act as catalysts in a wide range of reactions with several different types of biomolecules and have promising therapeutic applications due to their antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor activities. However, the lack of a detailed understanding of the mechanisms behind biochemically relevant reactions-particularly with complex biological systems such as proteins-still hinders further developments. Hence, in this Perspective, special attention is given to reactions of POMs with peptides and proteins showcasing a molecular-level understanding of the reaction mechanism. In doing so, we aim to highlight both existing limitations and promising directions of future research on the reactivity of metal-oxo clusters toward proteins and beyond.

Nanomaterial with Core-Shell Structure Composed of {P2W18O62} and Cobalt Homobenzotrizoate for Supercapacitors and H2O2-Sensing Applications

Designing and preparing dual-functional Dawson-type polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF) energy storage materials is challenging. Here, the Dawson-type POMOF nanomaterial with the molecular formula CoK₄[P₂W₁₈O₆₂]@Co₃(btc)₂ (abbreviated as {P₂W₁₈}@Co-BTC, H₃btc = 1,3,5-benzylcarboxylic acid) was prepared using a solid-phase grinding method. XRD, SEM, TEM et al. analyses prove that this nanomaterial has a core-shell structure of Co-BTC wrapping around the {P₂W₁₈}. In the three-electrode system, it was found that {P₂W₁₈}@Co-BTC has the best supercapacitance performance, with a specific capacitance of 490.7 F g^-1 (1 A g^-1) and good stability, compared to nanomaterials synthesized with different feedstock ratios and two precursors. In the symmetrical double-electrode system, both the power density (800.00 W kg^-1) and the energy density (11.36 Wh kg^-1) are greater. In addition, as the electrode material for the H₂O₂ sensor, {P₂W₁₈}@Co-BTC also exhibits a better H₂O₂-sensing performance, such as a wide linear range (1.9 μM-1.67 mM), low detection limit (0.633 μM), high selectivity, stability (92.4%) and high recovery for the detection of H₂O₂ in human serum samples. This study provides a new strategy for the development of Dawson-type POMOF nanomaterial compounds.

Engineering a polymer-encapsulated manganese dioxide/upconversion nanoprobe for FRET-based hydrogen peroxide detection

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is considered a significant biomarker in various diseases and could induce deleterious health problems at irregular physiological concentrations. Therefore, developing a simple, efficient biocompatible nanoprobe for trace amount H₂O₂ detection with high sensitivity and specificity is of great help for early diagnosis and therapeutics. Herein, we designed amphiphilic poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PMSA)-encapsulated nanoclusters composed of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO₂ NPs) at a specific ratio to produce a near-infrared (NIR) excited luminescent nanoprobe for H₂O₂ detection. Our results revealed that the MnO₂ NPs tended to experience catalytic decomposition when exposed to H₂O₂, while the UCNPs were retained inside the PSMA encapsulation, causing recovery of the UCNP emission band at 470 nm in accordance with H₂O₂ concentration. This luminescence recovery was linearly dependent on H₂O₂ concentrations, yielding a limit of detection (LOD) of 20 nM. The easy-to-interpret H₂O₂ nanoprobe also proved high selectivity in the presence of other interfering substances, and biocompatibility and water-dispersibility, making it an ideal candidate for real-time detection of disease-related H₂O₂ in living organisms.

Polyoxometalate-based nanocomposites for antitumor and antibacterial applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs), as emerging inorganic metal oxides, have been shown to have significant biological activity and great medicinal value. Nowadays, biologically active POM-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials have become the next generation of antibacterial and anticancer drugs because of their customizable molecular structures related to their highly enhanced antitumor activity and reduced toxicity to healthy cells. In this review, the current developed strategies with POM-based materials for the purpose of antibacterial and anticancer activities from different action principles inducing cell death and hyperpolarization, cell plasma membrane destruction, interference with bacterial respiratory chain and inhibiting bacterial growth are overviewed. Moreover, specific interactions between POM-based materials and biomolecules are highlighted for a better understanding of their antibacterial and anticancer mechanisms. POMs have great promise as next-generation antibacterial and anticancer drugs, and this review will provide a valuable systematic reference for the further development of POM-based nanomaterials.

Recent Advances in Polyoxometalates with Enzyme-like Characteristics for Analytical Applications

Artificial enzymes based on inorganic solids with both enzyme-mimetic activities and the special material features has been a promising candidate to overcome many deleterious effects of native enzymes in analytical applications. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are an importance class of molecular metal-oxygen anionic clusters. Their outstanding physicochemical properties, versatility and potential applications in energy conversion, magnetism, catalysis, molecular electronics and biomedicine have long been studied. However, the analytical applications of them is limited. Recently, the intrinsic enzymatic activities of POMs have also been found and become an area of growing interest. In this review, along with other reports, we aimed to classify the enzymatic activity of POMs, summarize the construction of POMs-based enzymes, and survey their recent advances in analytical fields. Finally, the current challenges and trends of the polyoxometalates with enzymatic activity in future chemo-/bio-sensing applications are briefly discussed.

N-Donor flexible ligands for constructing polyoxometalate-based metal–organic frameworks as multifunctional electrocatalysts

Two POMOFs, CUST-631 and CUST-632, were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then were directly prepared as electrode materials to explore the electrocatalytic properties for reduction of BrO3− and NO2− ions and oxidation properties towards AA.

Synthesis of POMOFs with 8-fold helix and its composite with carboxyl functionalized SWCNTs for the voltammetric determination of dopamine

Although many satisfactory studies have been developed for biomolecule detection, the complexity of biofluids still poses a major challenge to improve the performance of nanomaterials as electrochemical sensors. Herein, unprecedented polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) with 8-fold meso-helical feature, [Ag₅(trz)₄]₂[PMo₁₂O₄₀] (PAZ), were synthesized and explored as electrochemical sensors to detect dopamine (DA). To improve the conductivity of PAZ and the binding ability with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), the nanocomposite of carboxyl functionalized SWCNTs (SWCNTs-COOH) with nano-PAZ (NPAZ), NPAZ@SWCNTs-COOH, was fabricated, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that NPAZ can interact stably and uniformly with SWCNTs-COOH, owing to more defect sites on the surface of SWCNTs-COOH. The electrochemical result of NPAZ@SWCNTs-COOH/GCE towards detecting DA shows that the linear range was from 0.05 to 100 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 8.6 nM (S/N = 3). A new electrochemical biosensing platform by combining 8-fold helical POMOFs with SWCNTs-COOH was developed for enhancing detection of dopamine for the first time, exhibiting the lowest detection limit to date.

Hollow POM@MOF-derived Porous NiMo6 @Co3 O4 for Biothiol Colorimetric Detection

Developing highly active and sensitive peroxidase mimics for _L -cysteine (_L -Cys) colorimetric detection is very important for biotechnology and medical diagnosis. Herein, polyoxometalate-doped porous Co₃ O₄ composite (NiMo₆ @Co₃ O₄ ) was designed and prepared for the first time. Compared with pure and commercial Co₃ O₄ , NiMo₆ @Co₃ O₄ (n) composites exhibit the enhanced peroxidase-mimicking activities and stabilities due to the strong synergistic effect between porous Co₃ O₄ and multi-electron NiMo₆ clusters. Moreover, the peroxidase-mimicking activities of NiMo₆ @Co₃ O₄ (n) composites are heavily dependent on the doping mass of NiMo₆ , and the optimized NiMo₆ @Co₃ O₄ (2) exhibits the superlative peroxidase-mimicking activity. More importantly, a sensitive _L -Cys colorimetric detection is developed with the sensitivity of 0.023 μM^-1 and the detection limit at least 0.018 μM in the linear range of 1-20 μM, which is by far the best enzyme-mimetic performances, to the best our knowledge.

Biocompatible Platinum Nanoclusters Prepared Using Bitter Gourd Polysaccharide for Colorimetric Detection of Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid is an organic compound with antioxidant properties that can protect the human body from the threat of free radicals. Therefore, it is important to detect the existence and measure the concentration of ascorbic acid to regulate its content in the human body. In this work, we prepared bitter gourd polysaccharide (BGP)-stabilized platinum nanoclusters (Pt-BGP NCs) by reacting BGP with K2PtCl4. Pt-BGP NCs and catalyzed the decomposition of H2O2 to generate •OH radicals, which could oxidize TMB to form oxidized TMB (oxTMB), indicating their peroxidase-like properties. The kinetics followed the Michaelis-Menten equation. Furthermore, the colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid using Pt-BGP NCs showed high selectivity and a low detection limit of 0.191 μM. The accuracy of real sample detection using Pt-BGP NCs was as high as 98.9%. More importantly, Pt-BGP NCs had high cell biocompatibility and extremely low hemolysis rate due to the component of BGP. In summary, the prepared Pt-BGP NCs with reductive activity and good biocompatibility have good application prospects in colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid.

Polyoxometalates in Analytical Sciences

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have been used for spectrophotometric determinations of silicon and phosphorus under acidic conditions, referred to as the molybdenum yellow method and molybdenum blue method, respectively. Many POMs are redox active and exhibit fascinating but complicated voltammetric responses. These compounds can reversibly accommodate and release many electrons without exhibiting structural changes, implying that POMs can function as excellent mediators and can be applied to sensitive determination methods based on catalytic electrochemical reactions. In addition, some rare-earth-metal-incorporated POMs exhibit fluorescence, which enables sensitive determination by the enhancement and quenching of fluorescence intensities. In this review, various analytical applications of POMs are introduced, mainly focusing on papers published after 2000, except for the molybdenum yellow method and molybdenum blue method.

Polyelectrolyte-functionalized reduced graphene oxide wrapped helical POMOF nanocomposites for bioenzyme-free colorimetric biosensing

For the sake of effective colorimetric sensing-pattern, a sensitive colorimetric sensor was conceived based on polyoxometalates based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) and polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PDDA-rGO) for the first time, in which PDDA as a "glue" molecule turns rGO nanosheets into general platforms for bonding POMOFs nanoparticles. Herein, a new POMOF compound with fascinating helices-on-helices feature, [Ni₄(Trz)₆(H₂O)₂][SiW₁₂O₄₀]^.4H₂O (Trz = 1,2,4-triazole) (abbreviated as Ni₄SiW₁₂), was synthesized and characterized, then PDDA-rGO sheet as dispersive and conductive material was successfully introduced to Ni₄SiW₁₂ fabricating new PDDA-rGO/Ni₄SiW₁₂-n nanocomposites, (abbreviated as PMPG-n). The resulting PMPG-n nanocomposites as peroxidase mimetic show excellent catalytic activities under extreme condition (pH value 2.5), attributed to the nature and synergies from POMs, MOFs and PDDA-rGOs. Note that the peroxidase-like activity of PMPG-1 (the mass ratio of Ni₄SiW₁₂ to PDDA-rGO is 1:1) exhibits higher sensitivity (1-60 μM), faster response (10 min) and the lowest limit of detection (2.07 μM) among all reported materials to citric acid (CA) to date. This work opens up new application prospects in colorimetric sensing system for food quality control and safety, biotechnology and clinical diagnosis.

A polypyrrole-coated eightfold-helical Wells-Dawson POM-based Cu-FKZ framework for enhanced colorimetric sensing

To explore a novel colorimetric biosensor with high sensibility and selectivity, a new Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with an eightfold helix, [Cu₉(FKZ)₁₂(H₂O)₈][H₃P₂W₁₈O₆₂]₂·4H₂O (CuFKZP₂W₁₈) (HFKZ = 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1,1-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methyl] ethanol), was successfully synthesized; then, polypyrrole (PPy) was introduced to fabricate CuFKZP₂W₁₈/PPy(n) nanocomposites (n = 7%, 15%, 30%) via a facile in situ oxidation polymerization process. All the results indicate that CuFKZP₂W₁₈/PPy(15%) as a colorimetric biosensor exhibits lower limits of detection (0.07 μM towards H₂O₂ and 0.627 μM towards ascorbic acid), smaller K_m values (0.106 mM for H₂O₂ and 0.042 mM for o-phenylenediamine) and higher sensitivity (0.0227 1 μM^-1 towards H₂O₂ and 0.0025 1 μM^-1 to ascorbic acid) than most reported enzyme mimetics to the best of our knowledge.

Five Keggin-based compounds modified by bis- and mono-[1,3,4]triazole ligands: characterization, and selective photocatalytic and electrochemical properties

By using three kinds of triazole-containing ligands under hydrothermal conditions, five kinds of 0D to 3D POM-based compounds were successfully synthesized. These compounds have good photocatalytic selectivity and electrocatalytic activity.
