Kinetics Driven by Hollow Nanoreactors: An Opportunity for Controllable Catalysis

As a novel class of catalytic materials, hollow nanoreactors offer new opportunities for improving catalytic performance owing to their higher controllability on molecular kinetic behavior. Nevertheless, to achieve controllable catalysis with specific purposes, the catalytic mechanism occurring inside hollow nanoreactors remains to be further understood. In this context, this Review presents a focused discussion about the basic concept of hollow nanoreactors, the underlying theory for hollow nanoreactor-driven kinetics, and the intrinsic correlation between key structural parameters of hollow nanoreactors and molecular kinetic behaviors. We aim to provide in-depth insights into understanding kinetics occurred within typical hollow nanoreactors. The perspectives proposed in this paper may contribute to the development of the fundamental theoretical framework of hollow nanoreactor-driven catalysis.

Hollow Carbon Sphere Nanoreactors Loaded with PdCu Nanoparticles: Void-Confinement Effects in Liquid-Phase Hydrogenations

Nanoreactors with hollow structures have attracted great interest in catalysis research due to their void-confinement effects. However, the challenge in unambiguously unraveling these confinement effects is to decouple them from other factors affecting catalysis. Here, we synthesize a pair of hollow carbon sphere (HCS) nanoreactors with presynthesized PdCu nanoparticles encapsulated inside of HCS (PdCu@HCS) and supported outside of HCS (PdCu/HCS), respectively, while keeping other structural features the same. Based on the two comparative nanoreactors, void-confinement effects in liquid-phase hydrogenation are investigated in a two-chamber reactor. It is found that hydrogenations over PdCu@HCS are shape-selective catalysis, can be accelerated (accumulation of reactants), decelerated (mass transfer limitation), and even inhibited (molecular-sieving effect); conversion of the intermediate in the void space can be further promoted. Using this principle, a specific imine is selectively produced. This work provides a proof of concept for fundamental catalytic action of the hollow nanoreactors.

A Simple Iron-Catalyst for Alkenylation of Ketones Using Primary Alcohols

Herein, we developed a simple iron-catalyzed system for the α-alkenylation of ketones using primary alcohols. Such acceptor-less dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) of alcohols resulted in the synthesis of a series of important α,β-unsaturated functionalized ketones, having aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, nitro, nitrile and trifluoro-methyl, as well as halogen moieties, with excellent yields and selectivity. Initial mechanistic studies, including deuterium labeling experiments, determination of rate and order of the reaction, and quantitative determination of H₂ gas, were performed. The overall transformations produce water and dihydrogen as byproducts.

Hollow Nano-Mesosilica Spheres Containing Rhodium Nanoparticles Supported on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon: An Efficient Catalyst for the Reduction of Nitroarenes under Mild Conditions

Atom efficiency, low temperature, low pressure, and a nontoxic hydrogen source as a reducing agent are ideal reaction conditions for the reduction of nitroarenes. In this work, an efficient catalyst comprising hollow nano-mesosilica spheres loaded with Rh nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon was developed. Rh nanoparticles were stabilized and uniformly dispersed by nitrogen atoms, and the inner N-doped carbon shell was used to adsorb reaction substrates and improve catalytic activity. The catalyst showed remarkable activity (maximum yield at 1.5 h) and selectivity (100 %) for the reduction of nitrobenzene at lower temperature (80 °C), atmospheric pressure (1 atm), and without base under aqueous conditions. Moreover, the hydrothermal stability of this nanocatalyst was better than other catalysts in boiling water at 100 °C for 48 h and effectively prevented the aggregation and leaching of Rh NPs during the reaction.

Mesoporous Silica Nanosheets with Tunable Pore Lengths Supporting Metal Nanoparticles for Enhanced Hydrogenation Reactions

The channel lengths of mesoporous materials have a crucial impact on the catalytic performances of as-loaded active components. However, it remains a challenge to precisely tune the mesochannel length in a wide range from ≤50 nm to 200 nm. In this paper, we developed a top-down strategy, that is to say, crushing hollow microspheres, for preparing mesoporous silica nanosheets (MSSs) with perpendicular mesochannels and tunable thicknesses. Owing to the heterogeneous growth of the mesoporous silica layer on the surfaces of polystyrene microspheres (hard template), it was achieved to regulate the mesochannel length continuously in the range of 20–200 nm. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of channel lengths on the catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles was then investigated in the selective hydrogenation reaction of nitroarenes. It was found that a short channel not only favored dispersing metal nanoparticles uniformly and then avoiding pore blocking, but also improved the accessibility of metal nanoparticles largely during reactions.
