Abstract
Three phenomena, namely coordination-induced emission (CIE), aggregation-induced emission (AIE), and inner filter effect (IFE), were incorporated into the design of a ratiometric and color tonality-based biosensor. Blue fluorescent Al-based metal-organic frameworks (FMIL-96) were prepared from non-emissive ligand and aluminum ions via CIE. Interestingly, the addition of tetracycline (TC) led to ratiometric detection and color tonality, as the blue emission at 380 nm was quenched (when excited at 350 nm) due to IFE, while the green-yellowish emission at 525 nm was enhanced due to AIE. Based on that, an ultra-sensitive visual-based color tonality mode with smartphone assistance was developed for detection of TC. The sensor exhibited a linear relationship within a broad range of 2.0 to 85.0 μM TC with a detection limit of 68.0 nM. TC in milk samples was quantified with high accuracy and precision. This integration of smartphone and visual fluorescence in solution is accurate, reliable, cost-effective, and time-saving, providing an alternative strategy for the semi-quantitative determination of TC on-site.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCD) with high fluorescence retention and good stability were successfully fabricated using citric acid and urea via a facile and eco-friendly one-step microwave method, which exhibited superior specificity for detection of nitrofurantoin (NFT). Upon the addition of NFT, the fluorescence intensity of NCD at 450 nm was significantly decreased. Besides, a satisfactory linear relationship between the fluorescence quenching efficiency and concentrations of NFT was obtained. Especially, NCD was qualitatively and quantitatively applied for detection NFT in milk and meat extract samples with a high recovery rate. Consequently, it was suggested that the detection method had potential application in the specific detection of NFT, offering a novel approach for veterinary drug residue detection.

Abstract
Dual-state emitters (DSEs) are entities that exhibit fluorescence in both the solution and solid state, which open up a wide range of possibilities for their utilization in various fields. The development of detection platforms using intrinsic luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) is highly desirable for a variety of applications. DSE MOFs as a subclass of intrinsic LMOFs are highly attractive due to no need for encapsulation/functionalization by fluorophores and/or using luminescent linkers. Herein, a highly stable intrinsic dual-state blue emission (λem = 425 nm) zinc-based MOF with rodlike nanostructures (denoted as UoZ-2) was synthesized and characterized. To the best of our knowledge, intrinsic DSE of Zn-MOFs with blue emission in the dispersed form in solution and solid-state fluorescence have not been reported yet. When tetracycline (TC) was added, a continuous color evolution from blue to greenish-yellow with dramatic enhancement was observed due to aggregation induced emission (AIE). Thus, a sensitive ratiometry-based visual detection platform, in solution and on paper independently, was designed for detection of TC exploiting the DSE and AIE properties of UoZ-2 alone and UoZ-2:TC. The detection limit was estimated to be 4.5 nM, which is considered to be one of the most sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probes for TC sensing. The ratiometry paper-based UoZ-2 sensor displays a reliable TC quantitative analysis by recognizing RGB values in the on-site TC detection with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract
The boron-doped graphene quantum dot (HSE-GQD-B) was prepared by thermal pyrolysis of the mixture of citric acid, histidine, serine and ethylenediamine and boric acid. The resulting HSE-GQD-B is composed of tiny graphene sheets with an average sheet size of 4.2 ± 0.16 nm and exhibits an excitation-depended fluorescence emission behavior. The HSE-GQD-B produces the strongest blue fluorescence of 450 nm wavelength under the excitation of 365-nm ultraviolet light and the strongest yellow fluorescence of 550-nm wavelength under the excitation of 470-nm visible light. The interaction of HSE-GQD-B with oxytetracycline molecule induces a sensitive blue fluorescence quenching process. Based on this characteristic, a fluorescence method was established for optical detection of oxytetracycline. The analytical method offers a better sensitivity, selectivity, and repeatability compared with previously reported methods. The detection of oxytetracycline attains a wide linear range of 0.02-50 μM and a detection limit of 0.0067 μM. It has been successfully applied to fluorescence detection of oxytetracycline in food samples. In addition, the HSE-GQD-B was also used as a multicolor fluorescence probe for information encryption patterns.

Abstract
Color tonality by intrinsic fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desirable in bioanalytical applications due to its stability, low-cost and robustness with no need for functionalization and/or encapsulation of fluorophores. In the present work, ultra-small and higly fluorescent zinc-based MOFs (FMOF-5) were synthesized. The prepared FMOFs were around 5 nm in size, and gave strong blue emission at 440 nm when excited at 350 nm. Interestingly, tetracycline (TC) selectively tuned the blue emission of FMOF-5 to greenish-yellow emission (520 nm) with dramatic enhancement through aggregation induced emission (AIE). The fluorimetric analysis of TC was carried out through the ratiometric peak intensities of F520/F440, with detection limit (LOD) of 5 nM. To realize quantitative point-of-care based on color tonality, a smartphone integrated with the ratiometric visual platform was thereby design. Hence, TC was visually detected with LOD of 10 nM. The prepared FMOF-5-based probe showed high stability (3 months) and reusability (∼10 times). The developed visual-based platform presents great promise for practical point of care testing due to its low-cost, robustness, ruggedness, simple operation, and excellent selectivity and repeatability.

Abstract
The specific detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) residues is significant for food safety and environmental monitoring. However, rapid specific determination of OTC from various tetracyclines is still challenging due to their similar chemical structures. Here, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with excitation and pH-dependent optical properties and a high-fluorescence quantum yield were successfully synthesized, which were directly employed to fabricate a dual-response fluorescence probe by self-assembly with Eu3+ (NCDs/Eu3+) for the ratiometric determination of OTC. The addition of OTC into the probe greatly enhances the characteristic emission of Eu3+ due to the "antenna effect", and the incorporation of NCDs into the probe further improves the Eu3+ fluorescence by remarkably weakening the quenching effect caused by H2O molecules and efficiently shortening the distance of energy transfer from OTC to Eu3+. Meanwhile, the fluorescence of NCDs apparently decreases due to aggregation-caused quenching. The results demonstrate that a ratiometric detection of OTC (0.1-25 µM) with a detection limit of 29 nM based on the double response signals is achieved. Additionally, visual semi-quantitative assay of OTC can be realized with the naked eye under a 365 nm UV lamp according to the fluorescence color change of the as-fabricated probe. This probe exhibits acceptable specificity and anti-interference for OTC assay, holding promise for the fast detection of OTC in real water and milk samples.

Abstract
Due to the favorable biocompatibility, photostability and fluorescence emissions, carbon dots (CDs) are being widely investigated as fluorescent probes. Current CD-based fluorescent probe designs depend largely on conventional fluorescence sensing mechanisms, for e.g. the inner filter effect, photoinduced electron transfer, and Förster resonance energy transfer. Although these mechanisms have been successful, it is still desirable to introduce new sensing mechanisms. In recent years, emerging mechanisms such as aggregation-induced emission, hydrogen-bond induced emission, and intramolecular charge transfer have been developed for CD-based probes. This review summarizes both conventional and emerging mechanisms, and discuss CDs in the context of chemosensing, biosensing, and bioimaging. We provide an outlook for several other mechanisms such as CN isomerization, the short-wavelength inner filter technique, excited-state intramolecular proton transfer, and twisted intramolecular charge transfer, which have been applied to organic fluorescent probes design but not as much in CD-based sensing systems. We envision that this review will provide insights that inspire further development of CD-based fluorescent probes as for biological applications.

Abstract
As a member of chlorophenolic compounds, 2-chlorohydroquinone (H2QCl) has been widely used as intermediates in various chemical industries and leaded to serious threat on the environment. It is urgent to develop simple and robust analytical method for sensitive and selective determination of H2QCl. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a promising photoluminescence nanomaterial, have gained sufficient concern as optical sensors owing to their outstanding photochemical properties. In this work, nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized by a simple secondary hydrothermal method and applied as a fluorescent probe for the quantitation of H2QCl. A new fluorescence region centered at excitation wavelength of 310 nm and emission wavelength of 390 nm appeared after nitrogen doping. It was found that the N-CQDs exhibited a high selectivity towards H2QCl with sensitive fluorescence response and the fluorescence quenching of N-CQDs was linear with the concentration of H2QCl in the range of 30-90 μM (Y = 0.0049X + 0.1255, R2 = 0.996). This is the first time that the dual role of excitation light was observed in the fluorescence detection system. The ultraviolet light acted as not only the excitation energy source for N-CQDs photoluminescence, but also the light source for photolysis of H2QCl. In the detection process, H2QCl was degraded to p-benzoquinone by light, and then the CQDs combined with p-benzoquinone through Michael addition reaction under the action of doped nitrogen. The electron transfer from N-CQDs to the linked p-benzoquinone caused the quenching of fluorescence originated from the edge state of N-CQDs. Furthermore, this established method can be applied for the quantitative determination of H2QCl in environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries between 94.31 and 105.51%.

Abstract
Residual antibiotics in food products originated from administration of the antibiotics to animals may be accumulated through food metabolism in the human body and endanger safety and health. Thus, developing a prompt and accurate way for detection of antibiotics is a crucial issue. The zero-dimensional fluorescent probes including metals based, carbon and graphene quantum dots (QDs), are highly sensitive materials to use for the detection of a wide range of antibiotics in natural products. These QDs demonstrate unique optical properties like tunable photoluminescence (PL) and excitation-wavelength dependent emission. This study investigates the trends related to carbon and metal based QDs preparation and modification, and their diverse detection application. We discuss the performance of QDs based sensors application in various detection systems such as photoluminescence, photoelectrochemical, chemiluminescence, electrochemiluminescence, colorimetric, as well as describing their working principles in several samples. The detecting mechanism of a QDs-based sensor is dependent on its properties and specific interactions with particular antibiotics. This review also tries to describe environmental application and future perspective of QDs for antibiotics detection.

Abstract
Tetracyclines (TCs), as one of the broad-spectrum antibiotics, are widely used to treat bacterial infections. The residues of TCs in animal-origin foods and drinking water have raised safety concerns and affected the public health. Thus, there is a high demand to develop a simple and rapid method for the detection of TCs. In this work, we developed a ratiometric luminescence probe for the sensitive and visualized detection of TCs. Specifically, tannic acid-stabilized copper nanoclusters (TA-CuNCs) with blue emission at 433 nm were synthesized. The luminescence of TA-CuNCs attenuated partially by the europium ions (Eu3+) due to the aggregation-induced quenching. When TCs were added to the TA-CuNCs-Eu3+ system, the luminescence of TA-CuNCs at 433 nm can be further quenched by the inner-filter effect, and the characteristic luminescence of Eu3+ at 617 nm emerged due to the formation of Eu3+-TCs complex. The ratio of the luminescence at 617 nm-433 nm increased linearly to the concentration of TCs. Additionally, we demonstrated the detection of oxytetracycline in real samples such as tap and lake water, milk, pharmaceutical industry wastewater, honey and soil extract with high recovery rate (97.25%-103.44%). Furthermore, a portable paper device is fabricated by the luminescent probe to conduct the on-site analysis of TCs.

Abstract
A carbon dot (CD)-based fluorometric probe for oxytetracycline (OTC) detection utilizing a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism was firstly developed. Upon addition of OTC, the blue fluorescence of the CDs peaked at 405 nm was quickly quenched, with a new fluorescence peaked at 505 nm attributed to OTC was observed within 30 s. A visual fluorescent color change of the CDs solution from blue to green was discerned under a 365 nm UV light irradiation. The CDs displayed a high sensitivity and selectivity toward OTC with a low detection limit of 0.41 μM. Furthermore, the probe was applied to detect OTC in water, milk, and pork samples with a satisfied recovery.

Abstract
Antimonene quantum dots (AMQDs) are attracting considerable attention due to their fascinating physicochemical properties. However, research on their semiconductor characteristics, especially the photoluminescence performance, is still in a preliminary stage and the experimental verification is scarcely reported, significantly restricting their further applications. Herein, the photoluminescence property of AMQDs is experimentally verified. The AMQDs are prepared by probe sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation and show robust blue fluorescence, and the photoluminescence is hardly affected by pH. In view of the derivatization reaction of tetracyclines (TET) at different pHs, AMQDs are developed as a pH-mediated dual-channel ratiometric fluorescent probe for TET detection. Under acidic conditions, the AMQDs' probe exhibits unique recognition behavior due to the inherent fluorescence of TET and the solvent-enhancing effect, that is, the fluorescence changes from blue to red. Under alkaline conditions, this fluorescent probe realizes the transition from blue to yellow-green because of the decomposition of TET. The limits of detection are 27 × 10-9 and 74 × 10-9 m, respectively. The high sensitivity and remarkable fluorescence changes make AMQDs ideal probes for TET sensing. Additionally, this is the first report on the photoluminescence property of AMQDs. It is believed that this work will open a new avenue for AMQDs in optical sensing fields.

Abstract
As a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic, the overuse of oxytetracycline (OTC) causes antibiotics residues in the environment and seriously threats to human health owing to effective antibacterial properties. Thus, it is particularly important to design a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor to detect OTC with excellent performance. Herein, we developed a selective and stable PEC aptasensor of OTC on the basis of Co3O4 nanoparticles (Co3O4 NPs)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) heterojunction, used as PEC active materials. The Co3O4 NPs were successfully grown on the g-CN via grinding and calcining mixture of Co3O4 precursors and bulk g-CN. The Co3O4/g-CN heterojunction with improved light utilization and promoted electrons/holes separation capability can exhibit higher PEC signal than that of g-CN. In order to implement the purpose of specific recognition, OTC-aptamer was introduced into modified electrode to construct highly selective PEC aptasensor for OTC determination, which can possess wide linear range (0.01-500 nM) with low detection limit (3.5 pM, S/N = 3). This PEC aptasensor platform with excellent selectivity and high stability can provide a practical application in the field of water monitoring.

Abstract
Biochar (BC) colloids attract increasing interest due to their unique environmental behavior and potential risks. However, the interaction between BC colloids and organic contaminants that may affect their fates in the environment has not been substantially studied. Herein, adsorption and desorption of phenanthrene (PHN), atrazine (ATZ), and oxytetracycline (OTC) by a series of BC colloids derived from bulk rice straw BC samples with 6 pyrolysis temperatures (200-700 °C), and 3 particle sizes (250 nm, 500 nm, and 1 μm) were investigated. Regardless of pyrolysis temperature, BC colloids from a given sized bulk BC had a comparable size, being 30 ± 6, 70 ± 18, and 140 ± 15 nm corresponding to the three sized bulk BCs, respectively. The adsorption kinetics curves were well explained by the pseudo-second-order model, and pore diffusion was the primary rate-determining step. Both Freundlich and Langmuir models well fitted the adsorption isotherms. With increasing pyrolysis temperature or decreasing particle size of bulk BC, the specific surface area and pore volumes of the derived BC colloids increased, the kinetics model fitted adsorption rates (k2) of the three organics by the BC colloids all largely decreased, and the Langmuir model fitted adsorption capacities (Qmax) increased. The highest Qmax was obtained by BC colloids from the smallest (250 nm) bulk BC with the highest pyrolysis temperature (700 °C), being 212 μmol g-1 for PHN, 815 μmol g-1 for ATZ, and 72.4 μmol g-1 for OTC. The adsorption was reversible for PHN and ATZ, while significant desorption hysteresis was observed for OTC on BC colloids with middle pyrolysis temperatures (300-500 °C). The underlying mechanisms including hydrophobic interaction, π-π electron donor-acceptor interaction, molecular size effect, and irreversible reactions were discussed to explain the difference in the adsorption and desorption behaviors. The findings increased our understanding of the environmental fate and risk of BC.
