Strong Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in Ultrathin NiOOH Nanosheets through Surfactant Manipulation

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic (FM) materials with nanoscale thickness and spontaneous net magnetization have emerged as a promising class of functional materials for applications in next-generation spintronics, quantum processing, and data storage devices. However, most 2D materials exhibit weak FM even at low temperatures, limiting their potential applications in many technological fields. The fabrication of strong room-temperature FM 2D materials is highly desirable for the development of practical applications. Here, we demonstrate an ionic layer epitaxy strategy to synthesize few-layered NiOOH nanosheets with strong room-temperature FM and a saturation magnetization up to 409.86 emu cm-3 at 300 K. The results are consistent with the ab initio predictions of a stable FM NiOOH nanolayer structure with an FM configuration. The FM strength of the NiOOH nanosheets can be tuned by controlling the surfactant monolayer density and annealing. This work offers a promising strategy for achieving strong high-temperature FM in 2D materials for spintronic applications.

Desulfurization mechanism of thioether compounds in heavy oil on the (111) surface of inverse spinel Fe3O4

The elimination of S-containing compounds in heavy oil is of significant importance to viscosity reduction and oil quality elevation in order to enhance oil recovery. In this study, the decomposition behavior of S-containing compounds in heavy oil was elucidated from a theoretical perspective in conjunction with simulative experiments. CH₃SCH₃ was employed as a model molecule on behalf of straight-chain saturated sulfides in heavy oil. The common cost-friendly inverse spinel Fe₃O₄ was selected as the catalyst. Our theoretical calculations revealed that the most feasible reaction pathway of entire CH₃SCH₃ decomposition occurred in two steps with the assistance of weakly adsorbed H₂O molecules, generating two CH₃OH molecules and one H₂S molecule, of which the first step was the rate-determining step. These calculated results were confirmed with experimental results, which contributed to a clear and reliable catalytic desulfurization mechanism for S-containing compounds in heavy oil during aquathermolysis.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of FeOOH and Fe2O3 Modified Self-Organizing Immobilized TiO2 Nanotubes for Photocatalytic Degradation of 1H-Benzotriazole

In this study, titanium dioxide nanotubes were prepared by electrochemical anodization technique and modified with an aqueous solution of FeCl3 using hydrothermal synthesis method to control the amount and distribution of iron compounds on the anatase TiO2 nanotubes. The objective was to synthesize immobilized FeOOH@TiO2 or Fe2O3@TiO2 photocatalysts designed for the flow-through reactor systems; to investigate thermal treatment effect on the photocatalytic efficiency; to determine appropriate Fe-compounds concentration for the maximum photocatalytic activity improvement, and to explain the mechanism responsible for the enhancement. The photocatalysts were tested for the degradation of 1H-benzotriazole in water under UV/solar light irradiation. Up to two times increase in the photocatalytic activity was obtained when TiO2 nanotubes were modified with 0.8 mM Fe. At higher Fe concentrations (8 mM and 80 mM), the photocatalytic activity of the given photocatalysts decreased. To confirm the formation of FeOOH or Fe2O3 species, and to clarify the mechanism of photoactivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used.

Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy of hyperfine β-FeOOH nanorods modified with amorphous Ni(OH)2 under electrocatalytic water oxidation conditions

Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy was employed to study an active electrocatalyst, hyperfine β-FeOOH nanorods (∅ 3 × 15 nm) surface-modified with amorphous Ni hydroxide. The nearest neighbor structure and valence of Fe³⁺ ions did not change under water oxidation conditions, while changes in the nearest neighbor ordering of Ni²⁺ ions and a reversible transition to Ni³⁺ were observed in accordance with the electrical bias for the reaction.

High-pressure synthesis of ε-FeOOH from β-FeOOH and its application to the water oxidation catalyst

Research on materials under extreme conditions such as high pressures provides new insights into the evolution and dynamics of the earth and space sciences, but recently, this research has focused on applications as functional materials. In this contribution, we examined high-pressure/high-temperature phases of β-FeO_1−x(OH)_1+xCl_x with x = 0.12 (β-FeOOH) and their catalytic activities of water oxidation, i.e., oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Under pressures above 6 GPa and temperatures of 100–700 °C, β-FeOOH transformed into ε-FeOOH, as in the case of α-FeOOH. However, the established pressure–temperature phase diagram of β-FeOOH differs from that of α-FeOOH, probably owing to its open framework structure and partial occupation of Cl⁻ ions. The OER activities of ε-FeOOH strongly depended on the FeOOH sources, synthesis conditions, and composite electrodes. Nevertheless, one of the ε-FeOOH samples exhibited a low OER overpotential compared with α-FeOOH and its parent β-FeOOH, which are widely used as OER catalysts. Hence, ε-FeOOH is a potential candidate as a next-generation earth-abundant OER catalyst.
