Toluene Oxidation: CO2 vs Benzaldehyde: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Toluene is a common and significant volatile organic compound (VOC). Although it finds extensive application in various industrial processes (chemical manufacturing, paint and adhesive production, and as a solvent), it creates a huge environmental impact when emitted freely into the atmosphere. Two solutions were found to mitigate the emission of this pollutant: the total oxidation to CO2 and H2O and the selective oxidation into benzaldehyde. This review discusses the two main alternatives for tackling this problem: converting the toluene into carbon dioxide by total oxidation or into benzaldehyde by selective oxidation. It presents new catalytic advances, new trends, and the advantages and disadvantages of both methods.

Multistep protection strategy for preparation of atomically dispersed Fe–N catalysts for selective oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone

Atomically dispersed Fe atoms on three-dimensional N-doped hollow carbon spheres single-atom catalyst was prepared, which exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the catalytic oxidation of ethylbenzene under mild reaction conditions.

Sustainable Highly Selective Toluene Oxidation to Benzaldehyde

Thanks to the well-recognized role of benzaldehyde in industry, nowadays the research of new and sustainable approaches to selectively synthesize such an interesting product is receiving great attention from the chemists’ community. In this paper, a V-based catalytic biphasic system is adopted to perform toluene oxidation to benzaldehyde. Importantly, to pursue sustainability, organic solvents have been avoided, so toluene is used as substrate and co-solvent, together with water. Also, the use of hydrophobic ionic liquids has been explored. To perform oxidation, NH4VO3 catalyst, H2O2, and a safe and inexpensive co-catalyst are used. Among the tested co-catalysts, KF and O2 were found to be the best choice, to guarantee good yields, in mild reaction conditions. In fact, with such a sustainable method, up to 30% of benzaldehyde can be obtained at 60 °C and, more interestingly, the oxidative system can be recharged, raising-up the yield. The entire process results highly selective, since no traces of benzyl alcohol or benzoic acid are detected. Hence, it constitutes a very appealing synthetic route, even suitable to be easily scaled-up at an industrial level.

Investigation of the carbon dioxide adsorption behavior and the heterogeneous catalytic efficiency of a novel Ni-MOF with nitrogen-rich channels

MOFs have attracted remarkable attention as solid sorbents in CO₂ capture processes for their low-energy post-combustion. In this paper, a new Ni-based MOF, Ni₄(TATB)_1.5(EtO)_3.5(NEt₃)₄, was synthesized and characterized using various physicochemical techniques. The efficiency of the as-prepared Ni-MOF as a solid sorbent for CO₂ capture was investigated, and acceptable adsorption was exhibited. Furthermore, this Ni-MMOF was used as a catalyst in toluene selective oxidation, for eliminating a volatile organic compound, with tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant in the absence of organic solvents. The obtained results indicated that Ni-MOF has good catalytic activity and could be reused three times without considerable loss of its catalytic activity. This study highlights the great potential of developing MOFs to achieve green chemistry goals with the removal of hazardous liquid and gas compounds such as toluene and CO₂.
