Visible-light-driven photo-peroxidase catalysis: high-efficiency degradation of indole in water

The demand for H2O2 restricts the wider application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in degradation. In this work, a novel photoenzyme synergistic catalytic system was developed for high-efficiency degrading of indole in water by HRP without extra H2O2. The HRP was immobilized on CN-ZIF prepared by the combination of g-C3N4 and ZIF-8 to achieve photo-peroxidase catalyst HRP/Zn-CN-ZIF. Under visible light, photogenerated electrons and H2O2 from HRP/Zn-CN-ZIF participated in the biocatalytic cycle of HRP directly. As a result, the indole at 20 mg L-1 in water was degraded completely in 2 h by the HRP/Zn-CN-ZIF photoenzyme synergistic catalytic system without the addition of H2O2. Furthermore, HRP/Zn-CN-ZIF exhibited superior visible light absorption and charge transfer ability compared to g-C3N4. The results of the mechanism studies suggest that ·OH would play the most significant role from the HRP/Zn-CN-ZIF in indole degradation. This research provides an efficient approach for the removal of indole from water environments.

Recent Advances in the Preparation and Application of Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials

Two-dimensional nanomaterials (2D NMs), consisting of atoms or a near-atomic thickness with infinite transverse dimensions, possess unique structures, excellent physical properties, and tunable surface chemistry. They exhibit significant potential for development in the fields of sensing, renewable energy, and catalysis. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the latest research findings on the preparation and application of 2D NMs. First, the article introduces the common synthesis methods of 2D NMs from both "top-down" and "bottom-up" perspectives, including mechanical exfoliation, ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation, ion intercalation, chemical vapor deposition, and hydrothermal techniques. In terms of the applications of 2D NMs, this study focuses on their potential in gas sensing, lithium-ion batteries, photodetection, electromagnetic wave absorption, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. Additionally, based on existing research, the article looks forward to the future development trends and possible challenges of 2D NMs. The significance of this work lies in its systematic summary of the recent advancements in the preparation methods and applications of 2D NMs.

Low-cost and resource-efficient monolithic photocatalyst with enhanced solar light utilization for the photocatalytic treatment of organic wastewater

Developing low-cost, well-performing, and resource-efficient photocatalysts with enhanced solar light utilization can contribute to the practicability of photocatalytic techniques in organic wastewater treatment. This study fabricated and characterized a novel sunlight-driven BiOBr- and acetylene black (AB)-loaded monolithic photocatalyst. The fly ash-based geopolymer acts as photocatalyst support that can also provide adsorption sites and semiconductor metal oxide (Fe₂O₃). A conductive network in the geopolymer structure formed by AB can promote the separation of e^--h⁺ pairs generated by active sites (BiOBr and Fe₂O₃). Moreover, the photothermal effect induced by AB can assist the photocatalytic reaction at the microinterface of the photocatalyst. This photocatalyst was suspended on the surface of an aqueous solution for sufficient contact with oxygen from the air and is thus beneficial for producing ¹O₂ and ·OH as the main active species. Within 30 min, it exhibited higher photothermal-photocatalytic activity with 96% removal efficiency of the target pollutant methylene blue (MB), which occurred at an initial concentration of 20 mg L^-1. The demethylation and hydroxylation process induced by the active species constituted the primary degradation pathway for MB by Bi/AB/MFGP. Overall, this study provides a valuable reference for developing economical, effective, and practical photocatalysts and applying geopolymers in photocatalysis.

Efficient and Stable Catalytic Hydrogen Evolution of ZrO2/CdSe-DETA Nanocomposites under Visible Light

Composite photocatalysts are crucial for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this work, ZrO2/CdSe-diethylenetriamine (ZrO2/CdSe-DETA) heterojunction nanocomposites are synthesized, and efficiently and stably catalyzed hydrogen evolution under visible light. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) confirm the formation of heterojunctions between ZrO2 (ZO) and CdSe-DETA (CS). Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), Mott–Schottky, and theoretical calculations confirm that the mechanism at the heterojunction of the ZrO2/CdSe-DETA (ZO/CS) nanocomposites is Type-I. Among the ZO/CS nanocomposites (ZO/CS-0.4, ZO/CS-0.6, and ZO/CS-0.8; in the nanocomposites, the mass ratio of ZO to CS is 0.1:0.0765, 0.1:0.1148, and 0.1:0.1531, respectively). ZO/CS-0.6 nanocomposite has the best photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (4.27 mmol g−1 h−1), which is significantly higher than ZO (trace) and CS (1.75 mmol g−1 h−1). Within four cycles, the ZO/CS-0.6 nanocomposite maintains an efficient catalytic hydrogen evolution rate. Due to the existence of the heterojunction of the composites, the photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be effectively separated, which accelerates the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction and reduces the progress of photocorrosion. This work reveals the feasibility of ZO/CS nanocomposite photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Effect of zeolite morphology on charge separated states: ZSM-5-type nanocrystals, nanosheets and nanosponges

In the present work, we investigate the electron transfer occurring in the porous void of three MFI-type zeolite (ZSM-5) nanomaterials (nanocrystals, nanosheets and nanosponges) after adsorption and photoexcitation of t-stilbene (t-St). ZSM-5 nanosheets are constituted of lamellar stacking of several nanosheets (20-40 nm) where each nanosheet has a thickness of 2 nm. Nanosponges are composed of ZSM-5 nanocrystals (2-3 nm) separated by mesoporous holes of 5.8 nm facilitating the synthesis of hierachical materials. While the nanosheets show microporosity similar to that observed for the ZSM-5 nanocrystals, the absorption isotherms of the nanosponges show the existence of secondary micropores. After photoirradiation of t-St, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy shows the formation of charge separated states (radical cation and charge transfer complex) in the nanocrystals and in the nanosheets whereas no ionized species is detected in the nanosponges. The radical cation (RC) is stabilized in the nanosheets while it evolves very rapidly towards a Charge Transfer Complex (CTC) in the nanocrocrystals. The particular morphology of the nanosheets and nanosponges is put forward to explain this result since all host materials are of the MFI-type. To investigate ultra-short phenomena in the three nanomaterials, the UV-vis transient spectra were recorded between 2 and 450 μs after photoexcitation by nanosecond laser pulses. In the nanocrystals and nanosheets only the RC is detected whereas CTC formation is not observed. Photoexcitation of t-St in the nanosponges also leads to the formation of a RC but it recombines completely within 70 μs. This suggests the preferential location of t-St in the secondary micropores with pores larger than the micropores of the MFI-type framework and possibly in the mesopores of the nanosponges.

Facile hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl ether by employing a highly re-usable “dip-catalyst” containing Pt nanoparticles on a green support

We report the fabrication of a ‘dip-catalyst’ based on Pt nanoparticles on jute stalks as a green support and its catalytic application in cinnamyl alkyl ether synthesis.
