Biogenic nanoparticles: pioneering a new era in breast cancer therapeutics-a comprehensive review

Breast cancer, a widespread malignancy affecting women globally, often arises from mutations in estrogen/progesterone receptors. Conventional treatments like surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy face limitations such as low efficacy and adverse effects. However, nanotechnology offers promise with its unique attributes like targeted delivery and controlled drug release. Yet, challenges like poor size distribution and environmental concerns exist. Biogenic nanotechnology, using natural materials or living cells, is gaining traction for its safety and efficacy in cancer treatment. Biogenic nanoparticles synthesized from plant extracts offer a sustainable and eco-friendly approach, demonstrating significant toxicity against breast cancer cells while sparing healthy ones. They surpass traditional drugs, providing benefits like biocompatibility and targeted delivery. Thus, this current review summarizes the available knowledge on breast cancer (its types, stages, histopathology, symptoms, etiology and epidemiology) with the importance of using biogenic nanomaterials as a new and improved therapy. The novelty of this work lies in its comprehensive examination of the challenges and strategies for advancing the industrial utilization of biogenic metal and metal oxide NPs. Additionally; it underscores the potential of plant-mediated synthesis of biogenic NPs as effective therapies for breast cancer, detailing their mechanisms of action, advantages, and areas for further research.

Bioinspired graphene-based metal oxide nanocomposites for photocatalytic and electrochemical performances: an updated review

Considering the rapidly increasing population, the development of new resources, skills, and devices that can provide safe potable water and clean energy remains one of the vital research topics for the scientific community. Owing to this, scientific community discovered such material for tackle this issue of environment benign, the new materials with graphene functionalized derivatives show significant advantages for application in multifunctional catalysis and energy storage systems. Herein, we highlight the recent methods reported for the preparation of graphene-based materials by focusing on the following aspects: (i) transformation of graphite/graphite oxide into graphene/graphene oxide via exfoliation and reduction; (ii) bioinspired fabrication or modification of graphene with various metal oxides and its applications in photocatalysis and storage systems. The kinetics of photocatalysis and the effects of different parameters (such as photocatalyst dose and charge-carrier scavengers) for the optimization of the degradation efficiency of organic dyes, phenol compounds, antibiotics, and pharmaceutical drugs are discussed. Further, we present a brief introduction on different graphene-based metal oxides and a systematic survey of the recently published research literature on electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), supercapacitors, and fuel cells. Subsequently, the power density, stability, pseudocapacitance charge/discharge process, capacity and electrochemical reaction mechanisms of intercalation, and conversion- and alloying-type anode materials are summarized in detail. Furthermore, we thoroughly distinguish the intrinsic differences among underpotential deposition, intercalation, and conventional pseudocapacitance of electrode materials. This review offers a meaningful reference for the construction and fabrication of graphene-based metal oxides as effective photocatalysts for photodegradation study and high-performance optimization of anode materials for LIBs, supercapacitors, and fuel cells.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Adhatoda vasica leaf extract and its application in photocatalytic degradation of dyes

The paper describes biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Adhatoda vasica leaf extracts at room temperature. The prepared AgNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Thermogravimetric analyser. The bio reduction method is devoid of any toxic chemicals, organic solvents, and external reducing, capping and stabilizing agent. The synthesized AgNPs had spherical shape with particle size ranging between 3.88 and 23.97 nm and had face centered cubic structure. UV-visible spectral analysis confirmed the formation of AgNPs with a characteristic surface plasmon resonance band at 419 nm. The EDX pattern revealed the presence of elemental Ag in AgNPs. The prepared AgNPs were used for degradation of Amaranth, Allura red and Fast green in aqueous medium, with ≥ 92.6% efficiency within 15 min using 5 mg of AgNPs. The optical bandgap, Eg value of 2.26 eV for AgNPs was found to be effective for rapid photocatalytic degradation of all the three dyes. The degradation process was observed to follow pseudo first order kinetics.

Emerging aspects of metal ions-doped zinc oxide photocatalysts in degradation of organic dyes and pharmaceutical pollutants - A review

In recent periods, a broad assortment of continual organic contaminants has been released into our natural water resources. Indeed, it is exceedingly poisonous and perilous to living things; thus, the elimination of these organic pollutants before release into the water bodies is vital. A variety of techniques have been utilized to remove these organic pollutants with advanced oxidation photocatalytic methods with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles being commonly used as a capable catalyst for contaminated water treatment. Nevertheless, its broad energy gap, which can be only stimulated under an ultraviolet (UV) light source, and high recombination pairs of electrons and holes limit their photocatalytic behaviors. However, numerous methods have been suggested to decrease its energy gap for visible regions. Including, the doping ZnO with metal ions (dopant) can be considered as an effectual route not only the reason for a movement of the absorption edges toward the higher (visible light) region but also to lower the electron-hole pair (e--h+) recombination. This review concentrated on the impact of dissimilar types of metal ions (dopants) on the advancement in the degradation performance of ZnO. So, this work demonstrates a vital review of contemporary attainments in the alteration of ZnO nanoparticles for organic pollutants eliminations. Besides, the effect of doping ions including transition metals, rare earth metals, and metal ions (substitutional and interstitial) concerning numerous types of altered ZnO are summarized. The photodegradation mechanisms for pristine and metal-modified ZnO nanoparticles are also conferred.

Poly(allylamine) coated layer-by-layer assembly decorated 2D carbon backbone for highly sensitive and selective detection of Tau-441 using surface plasmon resonance biosensor

The determination of clinically significant amounts of tau protein in bodily fluids is a major problem in Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis. As a result, the present work aims to develop a simple, label-free, fast, highly sensitive, and selective 2D carbon backbone graphene oxide (GO) patterned surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mediated affinity biosensor for Tau-441 monitoring. Initially, non-plasmonic nanosized GO was made using a modified Hummers' method, whereas green synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were subjected to a layer-by-layer (LbL) design employing anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes. Several spectroscopical evaluations were carried out to ensure the synthesis of GO, AuNPs, and LbL assembly. Following that, the Anti-Tau rabbit antibody was immobilized on the designed LbL assembly using carbodiimide chemistry, and various studies such as sensitivity, selectivity, stability, repeatability, spiked sample analysis, etc., were conducted using the constructed affinity GO@LbL-AuNPs-Anti-Tau SPR biosensor. As an output, it shows a broad concentration range and a very low detection limit of 150 ng/mL to 5 fg/mL and 13.25 fg/mL, respectively. The remarkable sensitivity of this SPR biosensor represents the merits of a combination of plasmonic AuNPs and a non-plasmonic GO. It also exhibits great selectivity for Tau-441 in the presence of interfering molecules, which may be because of the immobilization of the Anti-Tau rabbit on the surface of the LbL assembly. Furthermore, it ensured high stability and repeatability, while spiked sample analysis and AD-induced animal samples analysis confirmed the practicability of GO@LbL-AuNPs-Anti-Tau SPR biosensor for Tau-441 detection. In conclusion, fabricated sensitive, selective, stable, label-free, quick, simple, and minimally invasive GO@LbL-AuNPs-Anti-Tau SPR biosensor will provide an alternative for AD diagnosis in the future.

Antibacterial and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of ZnO Nanoparticles Synthesized by a Green Method Using Sargassum Extracts

The present work shows the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles through a green method, using sargassum extracts, which provide the reducing and stabilizing compounds. The conditions of the medium in which the reaction was carried out was evaluated, that is, magnetic stirring, ultrasound assisted, and resting condition. UV-Vis, FTIR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction results confirmed the synthesis of ZnO with nanometric crystal size. The scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the morphology and size of the particles depends on the synthesis condition used. It obtained particles between 20 and 200 nm in the sample without agitation, while the samples with stirring and ultrasound were 80 nm and 100 nm, respectively. ZnO nanoparticles showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative P. aeruginosa. A quantitative analysis was performed by varying the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles. In all cases, the antibacterial activity against Gram-positives was greater than against Gram-negatives. Ultrasound-assisted ZnO nanoparticles showed the highest activity, around 99% and 80% for S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the study of the anti-inflammatory activity of ZnO nanoparticles; the ultrasound-assisted sample exhibited the highest percentage (93%), even above that shown by diclofenac, which was used as a reference. Therefore, the ZnO nanoparticles synthesized with sargassum extracts have properties that can be used safely and efficiently in the field of biomedicine.

Multimodal Imaging and Phototherapy of Cancer and Bacterial Infection by Graphene and Related Nanocomposites

The advancements in nanotechnology and nanomedicine are projected to solve many glitches in medicine, especially in the fields of cancer and infectious diseases, which are ranked in the top five most dangerous deadly diseases worldwide by the WHO. There is great concern to eradicate these problems with accurate diagnosis and therapies. Among many developed therapeutic models, near infra-red mediated phototherapy is a non-invasive technique used to invade many persistent tumors and bacterial infections with less inflammation compared with traditional therapeutic models such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgeries. Herein, we firstly summarize the up-to-date research on graphene phototheranostics for a better understanding of this field of research. We discuss the preparation and functionalization of graphene nanomaterials with various biocompatible components, such as metals, metal oxides, polymers, photosensitizers, and drugs, through covalent and noncovalent approaches. The multifunctional nanographene is used to diagnose the disease with confocal laser scanning microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging computed tomography, positron emission tomography, photoacoustic imaging, Raman, and ToF-SMIS to visualize inside the biological system for imaging-guided therapy are discussed. Further, treatment of disease by photothermal and photodynamic therapies against different cancers and bacterial infections are carefully conferred herein along with challenges and future perspectives.

GO-based antibacterial composites: Application and design strategies

Graphene oxide (GO), for its unique structure with high biocompatibility and designability, is widely used in the antibacterial field. Various strategies have been designed to fabricate GO-based composites with antibacterial properties. This review summarized these strategies, divided them into three types and interpreted their antibacterial mechanisms: (i) "GO*/non-GO" type in which GO acts as the single antibacterial core, (ii) "GO*/non-GO*" type in which GO and non-GO components function synergistically as dual antibacterial cores, (iii) "GO/non-GO*" type in which non-GO acts as the single antibacterial core, while GO component plays a supportive, not a dominant role in antibiosis. Besides, the fields suiting their applications and factors influencing their antibacterial properties were analyzed. Finally, the limitations and prospects in the current researches were discussed. In summary, GO-based composites have revolutionized antibacterial strategies. This review may serve as a reference to inspire further research on GO-based antibacterial composites.

Facile multifunctional-mode of fabricated biocompatible human serum albumin/reduced graphene oxide/Cladophora glomeratananoparticles for bacteriostatic phototherapy, bacterial tracking and antioxidant potential

To overcome multi-drug resistance in microbes, highly efficient antimicrobial substances are required that have a controllable antibacterial effect and are biocompatible. In the present study, an efficient phototherapeutic antibacterial agent, human serum albumin (HSA)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Cladophora glomeratabionanocomposite was synthesized by the incorporation of rGO nanoparticles with HSA, forming protein-rGO, and decorated with a natural freshwater seaweedCladophora glomerata. The prepared HSA/rGO/Cladophora glomeratabionanocomposite was characterized by spectroscopic (UV-vis, FTIR, XRD and Raman) and microscopic (TEM and SEM) techniques. The as-synthesized bionanocomposite showed that sunlight/NIR irradiation stimulated ROS-generating dual-phototherapic effects against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The bionanocomposite exerted strong antibacterial effects (above 96 %) against amoxicillin-resistantP. aeruginosaandS. aureus, in contrast to single-model-phototherapy. The bionanocomposite not only generated abundant ROS for killing bacteria, but also expressed a fluorescence image for bacterial tracking under sunlight/NIR irradiation. Additionally, the bionanocomposite displayed pronounced antioxidant activity.

Zinc oxide and zinc oxide-based nanostructures: biogenic and phytogenic synthesis, properties and applications

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are considered as very significant and essential material due to its multifunctional properties, stability, low cost and wide usage. Many green and biogenic approaches for ZnO NPs synthesis have been reported using various sources such as plants and microorganisms. Plants contain biomolecules that can act as capping, oxidizing and reducing agents that increase the rate of reaction and stabilizes the NPs. This review emphasizes and compiles different types of plants and parts of plant used for the synthesis of ZnO and its potential applications at one place. The influence of biogenic and phytogenic synthesized ZnO on its properties and possible mechanisms for its fabrication has been discussed. This review also highlights the potential applications and future prospects of phytogenic synthesized ZnO in the field of energy production and storage, sun light harvesting, environmental remediation, and biological applications.

Interfacing green synthesized flake like-ZnO with TiO2 for bilayer electron extraction in perovskite solar cells

To improve the performance of PSCs, interfacing green synthesized flake like-ZnO nanostructure have been introduced between ETL/perovskite layer which reduces the recombination losses at the interface.
