Chalcogenide-gold dual-layers coupled to gold nanoparticles for reconfigurable perfect absorption

A reconfigurable hyperbolic metamaterial perfect absorber

Metamaterial (MM) perfect absorbers are realised over various spectra from visible to microwave. Recently, different approaches have been explored to integrate tunability into MM absorbers. Particularly, tuning has been illustrated through electrical-, thermal-, and photo-induced changes to the permittivity of the active medium within MM absorbers. However, the intricate design, expensive nanofabrication process, and the volatile nature of the active medium limit the widespread applications of MM absorbers. Metal-dielectric stack layered hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) have recently attracted much attention due to their extraordinary optical properties and rather simple design. Herein, we experimentally realised a reconfigurable HMM perfect absorber based on alternating gold (Au) and Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST225) layers for the near-infrared (N-IR) region. It shows that a red-shift of 500 nm of the absorptance peak can be obtained by changing the GST225 state from amorphous to crystalline. The nearly perfect absorptance is omnidirectional and polarisation-independent. Additionally, the absorptance peak can be reversibly switched in just five nanoseconds by re-amorphising the GST225, enabling a dynamically reconfigurable HMM absorber. Experimental data are validated numerically using the finite-difference time-domain method. The absorber fabricated using our strategy has advantages of being reconfigurable, uncomplicated, and lithography-free over conventional MM absorbers, which may open up a new path for applications in energy harvesting, photodetectors, biochemical sensing, and thermal camouflage techniques.

Near-Infrared Rewritable, Non-Volatile Subwavelength Absorber Based on Chalcogenide Phase Change Materials

Chalcogenide phase change materials enable the realization of novel, non-volatile, switchable electronic and photonic devices. In this paper, we propose a type of rewritable, non-volatile near infrared subwavelength absorber based on chalcogenide phase change materials. Our numerical simulations show that nearly perfect absorption more than 0.99 can be realized in the written state while the absorption of as-deposited or erased state is lower than 0.15 in the studied spectral range, leading to high contrast ratio of reflection more than 20 dB. Continuous tuning of the absorption spectra can be realized not only by varying the geometric parameters of the absorber but also by changing the crystallization ratio of the switched Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST). The proposed device may find widespread applications in optical modulation, beam steering and so on.

Independent tuning of bright and dark meta-atoms with phase change materials on EIT metasurfaces

The realization of tunable metasurfaces is of fundamental importance for boosting the electromagnetic field control ability. Especially, it is important to put forward new modulation methods to further understand their underlying modulation mechanism and expand their application range. In this paper, tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metasurfaces based on the phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Different from previous modulation methods of directly introducing the GST film below the metasurfaces, here a two-step lithography method is introduced to combine independent GST strips with bright and dark meta-atoms in the EIT structures, respectively, achieving the independent modulation of the EIT-like spectra. In addition, by applying temporal coupled-mode theory (TCMT), the EIT-like spectra with different GST crystallization levels were analysed and the corresponding characteristic parameters were determined simultaneously. These fitting results reveal that GST strips can modulate the resonances of the bright and dark meta-atoms independently by shifting the resonant frequency and increasing the decay rate, which in turn result in the different modulation features of the EIT-like spectra. This method improves the degree of freedom of active modulation and provides a new route for tunable slow light devices.
