FeNi3-modified Fe2O3/NiO/MoO2 heterogeneous nanoparticles immobilized on N, P co-doped CNT as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Mild and Efficient Heterogeneous Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes Facilitated by a Pyrolytically Activated Dinuclear Ni(II)-Ce(III) Diimine Complex

We communicate the assembly of a solid, Ce-promoted Ni-based composite that was applied as catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to afford the corresponding organic amines. The catalytically active material described herein was obtained through pyrolysis of a SiO₂-pellet-supported bimetallic Ni-Ce complex that was readily synthesized prior to use from a MeO-functionalized salen congener, Ni(OAc)₂·4 H₂O, and Ce(NO₃)₃·6 H₂O. Rewardingly, the requisite ligand for the pertinent solution phase precursor was accessible upon straightforward and time-saving imine condensation of ortho-vanillin with 1,3-diamino-2,2′-dimethylpropane. The introduced catalytic protocol is operationally simple in that the whole reaction set-up is quickly put together on the bench without the need of cumbersome handling in a glovebox or related containment systems. Moreover, the advantageous geometry and compact-sized nature of the used pellets renders the catalyst separation and recycling exceptionally easy.

Generation of Cobalt-Containing Nanoparticles on Carbon via Pyrolysis of a Cobalt Corrole and Its Application in the Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

We report on the manufacture of a state-of-the-art heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst, which is based on a molecularly well-defined phosphine-tagged cobalt corrole complex. This precursor compound is readily synthesized from convenient starting materials while the active material is obtained through wet-impregnation of the pertinent metalliferous macrocycle onto carbon black followed by controlled pyrolysis of the loaded carrier material under an inert gas atmosphere. Thus, the obtained composite was then applied in the heterogeneous hydrogenation of various nitroarenes to yield a vast array of valuable aniline derivatives that were conveniently isolated as their hydrochloride salts. The introduced catalytic protocol is robust and user-friendly with the entire assembly of the reaction set-up enabling the conduction of the experiments on the laboratory bench without any protection from air.

Oriented and robust anchoring of Fe via anodic interfacial coordination assembly on ultrathin Co hydroxides for efficient water oxidation

The oriented distribution and strong bonding of Fe active sites in multiple metal hydroxides are crucial to modulate activity and stability for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the dispersion and inevitable dissolution of Fe species still need to be addressed through deliberate design. Here, trace amounts of Fe chelated with tannic acid (TA) are precisely anchored to ultrathin Co hydroxides (TF@Co(OH)₂-t) through a new anodic interfacial coordination assembly strategy: firstly, the ZIF-67@Co(OH)₂ precursor with ultrathin Co(OH)₂ nanosheets vertically grown on the shell, provides abundant active sites and sufficient anchoring regions for subsequent TA-Fe coating; secondly, the TA-Fe ligand network quickly and robustly coats the surface of the Co(OH)₂via positive potential-driven chronopotentiometry, yielding TF@Co(OH)₂-t with good dispersion and controllable Fe species. The TA-Fe network efficiently activates Co species and prevents the dissolution of Fe ions. Physical characterization and DFT simulations reveal that the optimized OER activity with 317 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for TF@Co(OH)₂-500 can be attributed to the accelerated electron transfer, increased active sites, and the moderate fall in d-band center levels due to Fe integration. Moreover, prolonged stability is realized benefiting from the robust TA-Fe coating protecting the actives sites.

Cu/Cux S-Embedded N,S-Doped Porous Carbon Derived in Situ from a MOF Designed for Efficient Catalysis

The reasonable design of the precursor of a carbon-based nanocatalyst is an important pathway to improve catalytic performance. In this study, a simple solvothermal method was used to synthesize [Cu(TPT)(2,5-tdc)] ⋅ 2H₂ O (Cu-MOF), which contains N and S atoms, in one step. Further in-situ carbonization of the Cu-MOF as the precursor was used to synthesize Cu/Cu_x S-embedded N,S-doped porous carbon (Cu/Cu_x S/NSC) composites. The catalytic activities of the prepared Cu/Cu_x S/NSC were investigated through catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The results show that the designed Cu/Cu_x S/NSC has exceptional catalytic activity and recycling stability, with a reaction rate constant of 0.0256 s^-1 , and the conversion rate still exceeds 90 % after 15 cycles. Meanwhile, the efficient catalytic reduction of dyes (CR, MO, MB and RhB) confirmed its versatility. Finally, the active sites of the Cu/Cu_x S/NSC catalysts were analyzed, and a possible multicomponent synergistic catalytic mechanism was proposed.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Fe-Doped Ni3Fe/NiFe2O4 Heteronanoparticle-Decorated Carbon Nanotube Network as a Highly Efficient and Durable Bifunctional Electrocatalyst

Strategic design and fabrication of a highly efficient and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalyst is of great significance in water electrolysis in order to produce sustainable hydrogen fuel in a large scale. However, it is still challenging to develop a stable, inexpensive, and efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst that can overcome the sluggish oxygen evolution kinetics in water electrolysis. To address the aforementioned concerns, a metal-organic framework-derived Fe-doped Ni₃Fe/NiFe₂O₄ heterostructural nanoparticle-embedded carbon nanotube (CNT) matrix (Fe(0.2)/Ni-M@C-400-2h) is synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction and subsequent carbonization of an earth-abundant Ni/Fe/C precursor. With a novel porous nanoarchitecture fabricated by a Ni₃Fe/NiFe₂O₄ heterostructure on a highly conductive CNT matrix, this catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity during water electrolysis over the Ni/Fe-based electrocatalysts reported recently. It delivers a low overpotential of 250 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm² with a small Tafel slope of 43.4 mV/dec for oxygen evolution reaction. It requires a low overpotential of 128 mV (η₁₀) for hydrogen evolution reaction and displays a low overpotential of 1.62 V (η₁₀) for overall water splitting. This study introduces a facile and straightforward synthesis strategy to develop transition metal-based nanoarchitectures with high performance and durability for overall water-splitting catalysis.

Oxygen-evolution reaction by nickel/nickel oxide interface in the presence of ferrate(VI)

In this study, we investigate the effect of K2FeO4, as a new and soluble Fe salt at alkaline conditions, on oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) of Ni oxide. Both oxidation and reduction peaks for Ni in the presence and absence of Fe are linearly changed by (scan rate)1/2. Immediately after the interaction of [FeO4]2- with the surface of the electrode, a significant increase in OER is observed. This could be indicative of the fact that either the [FeO4]2- on the surface of Ni oxide is directly involved in OER, or, it is important to activate Ni oxide toward OER. Due to the change in the Ni(II)/(III) peak, it is hypothesized that Fe impurity in KOH or electrochemical cell has different effects at the potential range. At low potential, [FeO4]2- is reduced on the surface of the electrode, and thus, is significantly adsorbed on the electrode. Finally, oxygen-evolution measurements of K2FeO4 and Ni2O3 are investigated under chemical conditions. K2FeO4 is not stable in the presence of Ni(II) oxide, and OER is observed in a KOH solution (pH ≈ 13).
