Ultrathin circular polarimeter based on chiral plasmonic metasurface and monolayer MoSe2

High discrimination ratio, broadband circularly polarized light photodetector using dielectric achiral nanostructures

The on-chip measurement of polarization states plays an increasingly crucial role in modern sensing and imaging applications. While high-performance monolithic linearly polarized photodetectors have been extensively studied, integrated circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors are still hindered by inadequate discrimination capability. This study presents a broadband CPL photodetector utilizing achiral all-dielectric nanostructures, achieving an impressive discrimination ratio of ~107 at a wavelength of 405 nm. Our device shows outstanding CPL discrimination capability across the visible band without requiring intensity calibration. It functions based on the CPL-dependent near-field modes within achiral structures: under left or right CPL illumination, distinct near-field modes are excited, resulting in asymmetric irradiation of the two electrodes and generating a photovoltage with directions determined by the chirality of the incident light field. The proposed design strategy facilitates ultra-compact CPL detection across diverse materials, structures, and spectral ranges, presenting a novel avenue for achieving high-performance monolithic CPL detection.

Chiral absorption enhancement via critically coupled resonances in atomically thin photonic crystal exciton-polaritons

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDS) offer a promising route to the scaling down of optoelectronic devices to the ultimate thickness limit. But the weak light-matter interaction caused by their atomically thin nature makes them inevitably rely on external photonic structures to enhance optical absorption. Here, we report chiral absorption enhancement in atomically thin tungsten diselenide (WSe2) using chiral resonances in photonic crystal (PhC) nanostructures patterned directly in WSe2 itself. We show that the quality factors (Q factors) of the resonances grow exponentially as the PhC thickness approaches atomic limit. As such, the strong interaction of high Q factor photonic resonance with the coexisting exciton resonance in WSe2 results into self-coupled exciton-polaritons. By balancing the light coupling and absorption rates, the incident light can critically couple to chiral resonances in WSe2 PhC exciton-polaritons, leading to the theoretically limited 50% optical absorptance with over 84% circular dichroism (CD).

Multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetector Based on a plasmonic metasurface

On-chip polarization-sensitive photodetectors are highly desired for ultra-compact optoelectronic systems. It has been demonstrated that polarization-sensitive photodetection can be realized using intrinsic chiral and anisotropy materials. However, these photodetectors can only realize the detection of either circularly polarized light (CPL) or linear polarized light (LPL) and are not applicable to multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetection. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a metasurface-integrated semiconductor to realize multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetection at visible wavelengths. This device is composed of a MoSe2 monolayer on an H-shaped plasmonic nanostructure. The geometric chirality and anisotropy of the H-shaped nanostructure result in CPL and LPL resolved optical responses. By integrating a plasmonic metasurface with monolayer MoSe2, we converted polarization-sensitive optical absorption to the polarization-sensitive photocurrent of the device through the photoconductive effect. Polarization-sensitive photocurrent responses to both CPL and LPL are systematically investigated, which demonstrate a high photocurrent circular dichroism (CD) of 0.35 at a wavelength of 810 nm and photocurrent linear polarization (LP) of 0.4 at a wavelength of 633 nm. Our results provide a potential pathway to realize multiple-polarization-sensitive applications in medicine analysis, biology, and remote sensing.

Hierarchically manufactured chiral plasmonic nanostructures with gigantic chirality for polarized emission and information encryption

Chiral metamaterials have received significant attention due to their strong chiroptical interactions with electromagnetic waves of incident light. However, the fabrication of large-area, hierarchically manufactured chiral plasmonic structures with high dissymmetry factors (g-factors) over a wide spectral range remains the key barrier to practical applications. Here we report a facile yet efficient method to fabricate hierarchical chiral nanostructures over a large area (>11.7 × 11.7 cm2) and with high g-factors (up to 0.07 in the visible region) by imparting extrinsic chirality to nanostructured polymer substrates through the simple exertion of mechanical force. We also demonstrate the application of our approach in the polarized emission of quantum dots and information encryption, including chiral quick response codes and anti-counterfeiting. This study thus paves the way for the rational design and fabrication of large-area chiral nanostructures and for their application in quantum communications and security-enhanced optical communications.

Chirality in Light-Matter Interaction

The scientific effort to control the interaction between light and matter has grown exponentially in the last 2 decades. This growth has been aided by the development of scientific and technological tools enabling the manipulation of light at deeply sub-wavelength scales, unlocking a large variety of novel phenomena spanning traditionally distant research areas. Here, the role of chirality in light-matter interactions is reviewed by providing a broad overview of its properties, materials, and applications. A perspective on future developments is highlighted, including the growing role of machine learning in designing advanced chiroptical materials to enhance and control light-matter interactions across several scales.

Dielectric chiral metasurfaces for enhanced circular dichroism spectroscopy at near infrared regime

Numerous applications of chiro-optical effects can be found in nanophotonics, including imaging and spin-selective absorption, particularly in sensing for separating and detecting chiral enantiomers. Flat single-layer metasurfaces composed of chiral or achiral sub-wavelength structures offer unique properties to manipulate the light due to their extraordinary light-matter interaction. However, at optical wavelengths, the generation of strong chirality is found to be challenging via conventional chiral metasurface approaches. This work intends to design and optimize a dielectric chiral meta-nano-surface based on a diatomic design strategy to comprehend giant chiro-optical effects in the near-infrared (NIR) regime for potential application in circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Instead of using a single chiral structure that limits the CD value at optical wavelengths, the proposed metasurface used a diatomic (two meta-atoms with distinct geometric parameters) chiral structure as a building block to significantly enhance the chiro-optical effect. Combining both meta-atoms in a single periodicity of the building block introduces constructive and destructive interferences to attain the maximum circular dichroism value exceeding 75%. Moreover, using multipolar resonance theory, the physics behind the generation of giant chiro-optical effects have also been investigated. The proposed dielectric chiral meta-platform based on the extra degree of freedom can find application in compact integrated optical setups for CD spectroscopy, enantiomer separation and detection, spin-dependent color filters, and beam splitters.

Strain engineering of hyperbolic plasmons in monolayer carbon phosphide: a first-principles study

Natural and tunable in-plane hyperbolic plasmons have so far been elusive, and hence few two-dimensional hyperbolic materials have been theoretically and experimentally discovered. Here, comprehensive first-principles calculations were conducted to study the electronic and plasmonic properties of biaxially strained monolayer carbon phosphide (β-CP). We found that (i) a compressed β-CP hosts strong anisotropic Dirac-shaped fermions with robust modulated Fermi velocity, (ii) for biaxial strain of -3% an unprecedented ultra-wide hyperbolic window is extended continuously from terahertz (9 THz) to mid-visible (blue light, 693 THz), (iii) the tunable optical Van Hove singularity as the origin of hyperbolic plasmons in deformed β-CP is disclosed, (iv) an elliptic to hyperbolic transition in the σ-near-zero regime is demonstrated in terahertz frequencies (9 THz), (v) the propagation angle of the concave wavefront can be actively tuned using biaxial strains, and (vi) hyperbolic dispersion reorientation from one principal axis to another orthogonal one under compressive strains larger than 8% is observed. This study sheds new light on the unique properties of hyperbolic two-dimensional (2D) materials having exotic optoelectronic characteristics which are promising candidates for anisotropic light control with ultimate dexterity in the flat optics.

High-Discrimination Circular Polarization Detection Based on Dielectric-Metal-Hybrid Chiral Metamirror Integrated Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors

Circular polarization detection enables a wide range of applications. With the miniaturization of optoelectronic systems, integrated circular polarization detectors with native sensitivity to the spin state of light have become highly sought after. The key issues with this type of device are its low circular polarization extinction ratios (CPERs) and reduced responsivities. Metallic two-dimensional chiral metamaterials have been integrated with detection materials for filterless circular polarization detection. However, the CPERs of such devices are typically below five, and the light absorption in the detection materials is hardly enhanced and is even sometimes reduced. Here, we propose to sandwich multiple quantum wells between a dielectric two-dimensional chiral metamaterial and a metal grating to obtain both a high CPER and a photoresponse enhancement. The dielectric-metal-hybrid chiral metamirror integrated quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) exhibits a CPER as high as 100 in the long wave infrared range, exceeding all reported CPERs for integrated circular polarization detectors. The absorption efficiency of this device reaches 54%, which is 17 times higher than that of a standard 45° edge facet coupled device. The circular polarization discrimination is attributed to the interference between the principle-polarization radiation and the cross-polarization radiation of the chiral structure during multiple reflections and the structure-material double polarization selection. The enhanced absorption efficiency is due to the excitation of a surface plasmon polariton wave. The dielectric-metal-hybrid chiral mirror structure is compatible with QWIP focal plane arrays.

Ultrathin Suspended Chiral Metasurfaces for Enantiodiscrimination

Chiral metasurfaces can exhibit a strong circular dichroism, but it is limited by the complicated fabrication procedure and alignment errors. Here, a new type of self-aligned suspended chiral bilayer metasurface with only one-step electron beam lithography exposure is demonstrated. A significant optical chirality of 221° µm^-1 can be realized using suspended metasurfaces with a thickness of 100 nm. Furthermore, this study experimentally demonstrates that such a structure is capable of label-free discrimination of the chiral molecules at zeptomole level, exhibiting a much higher sensitivity (orders of magnitude) compared to the conventional circular dichroism spectroscopy. The fundamental principles for chiral sensing using molecules-metasurfaces interactions are explored. Benefiting from the giant chiroptical response, the proposed metadevice may offer promising applications for ultrathin circular polarizers, chiral molecular detectors, and asymmetry information processing.

On-chip mid-infrared photothermoelectric detectors for full-Stokes detection

On-chip polarimeters are highly desirable for the next-generation ultra-compact optical and optoelectronic systems. Polarization-sensitive photodetectors relying on anisotropic absorption of natural/artificial materials have emerged as a promising candidate for on-chip polarimeters owing to their filterless configurations. However, these photodetectors can only be applied for detection of either linearly or circularly polarized light, not applicable for full-Stokes detection. Here, we propose and demonstrate three-ports polarimeters comprising on-chip chiral plasmonic metamaterial-mediated mid-infrared photodetectors for full-Stokes detection. By manipulating the spatial distribution of chiral metamaterials, we could convert polarization-resolved absorptions to corresponding polarization-resolved photovoltages of three ports through the photothermoelectric effect. We utilize the developed polarimeter in an imaging demonstration showing reliable ability for polarization reconstruction. Our work provides an alternative strategy for developing polarization-resolved photodetectors with a bandgap-independent operation range in the mid-infrared.

Organic donor-acceptor heterojunctions for high performance circularly polarized light detection

Development of highly efficient and stable lateral organic circularly polarized light photodetector is a fundamental prerequisite for realization of circularly polarized light integrated applications. However, chiral semiconductors with helical structure are usually found with intrinsically low field-effect mobilities, which becomes a bottleneck for high-performance and multi-wavelength circularly polarized light detection. To address this problem, here we demonstrate a novel strategy to fabricate multi-wavelength circularly polarized light photodetector based on the donor-acceptor heterojunction, where efficient exciton separation enables chiral acceptor layer to provide differentiated concentration of holes to the channel of organic field-effect transistors. Benefitting from the low defect density at the semiconductor/dielectric interface, the photodetectors exhibit excellent stability, enabling current roll-off of about 3–4% over 500 cycles. The photocurrent dissymmetry value and responsivity for circularly polarized light photodetector in air are 0.24 and 0.28 A W⁻¹, respectively. We further demonstrate circularly polarized light communication based on a real-time circularly polarized light detector by decoding the light signal. As the proof-of-concept, the results hold the promise of large-scale circularly polarized light integrated photonic applications.

In situ tunable circular dichroism of flexible chiral metasurfaces composed of plasmonic nanorod trimers

The circularly polarized light source is one of the keys to chiral photonic circuits and systems. However, it is difficult to integrate conventional light-emitting devices with circular polarization converters directly into compact chip-scale photonic systems partly because of their bulky structures. In this study, in situ optical chirality tunable nanorod trimer metasurfaces consisting of two types of nanorod dimers are demonstrated and integrated with a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The optical chirality variations originating from the tunable asymmetricity of nanorod trimers under different stretching scenarios are evaluated. Through the processes, the gap distances between nanorods are varied, and the degree of circular polarization of the transmitted wave is controlled through the manipulation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) coupling. The results reveal the circular dichroism tunability and durability of fabricated chiral metasurfaces which can be important elements for chip-scale flexible optoelectronic integrated circuits for sensing, display and communication applications.

Insect-inspired nanofibrous polyaniline multi-scale films for hybrid polarimetric imaging with scattered light

We demonstrate a bio-inspired coating for novel imaging and sensing designs: the coating sorts different colors and linear polarizations. This coating, composed of conducting, nanofibrous polyaniline in an inverse opal film (PANI-IOF), is inexpensive and can feasibly be deposited over large areas on a range of flexible and non-flat substrates. With PANI IOFs, light is scattered into azimuthally polarized Debye rings. Subsequently, the diffracted speckle patterns carry compressed representations of the polarized illumination, which we reconstruct using shallow neural networks.

Ultrasensitive Near-Infrared Circularly Polarized Light Detection Using 3D Perovskite Embedded with Chiral Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Chiral organic ligand-incorporated low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites have received increasing attention for next-generation photodetectors because of the direct detection capability of circularly polarized light (CPL), which overcomes the requirement for subsidiary optical components in conventional CPL photodetectors. However, most chiral perovskites have been based on low-dimensional structures that confine chiroptical responses to the ultraviolet (UV) or short-wavelength visible region and limit photocurrent due to their wide bandgap and poor charge transport. Here, chiroptical properties of 3D Cs0.05 FA0.5 MA0.45 Pb0.5 Sn0.5 I3 polycrystalline films are achieved by incorporating chiral plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into the mixed PbSn perovskite, without sacrificing its original optoelectronic properties. CPL detectors fabricated using chiral AuNP-embedded perovskite films can operate without external power input; they exhibit remarkable chirality in the near-infrared (NIR) region with a high anisotropy factor of responsivity (gres ) of 0.55, via giant plasmon resonance shift of chiral plasmonic AuNPs. In addition, a CPL detector array fabricated on a plastic substrate demonstrates highly sensitive self-powered NIR detection with superior flexibility and durability.

Multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetector based on a perovskite metasurface

Most polarization-sensitive photodetectors detect either linearly polarized (LP) or circularly polarized (CP) light. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a multiple-polarization photodetector based on a hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) metasurface, which is sensitive to both LP and CP light simultaneously. The perovskite metasurface is composed of a HOIP antenna array on a single-crystal HOIP film. Owing to the antenna anisotropy, the absorption of linearly polarized light at the metasurface depends on the polarization angle; also, due to the mirror asymmetry of the antenna elements, the metasurface is also sensitive to different circular polarizations. Polarization-dependent photocurrent responses to both LP and CP light are detected. Our results highlight the potential of perovskite metasurfaces for integrated photoelectric applications.

Recent Progress in Improving the Performance of Infrared Photodetectors via Optical Field Manipulations

Benefiting from the inherent capacity for detecting longer wavelengths inaccessible to human eyes, infrared photodetectors have found numerous applications in both military and daily life, such as individual combat weapons, automatic driving sensors and night-vision devices. However, the imperfect material growth and incomplete device manufacturing impose an inevitable restriction on the further improvement of infrared photodetectors. The advent of artificial microstructures, especially metasurfaces, featuring with strong light field enhancement and multifunctional properties in manipulating the light-matter interactions on subwavelength scale, have promised great potential in overcoming the bottlenecks faced by conventional infrared detectors. Additionally, metasurfaces exhibit versatile and flexible integration with existing detection semiconductors. In this paper, we start with a review of conventionally bulky and recently emerging two-dimensional material-based infrared photodetectors, i.e., InGaAs, HgCdTe, graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus devices. As to the challenges the detectors are facing, we further discuss the recent progress on the metasurfaces integrated on the photodetectors and demonstrate their role in improving device performance. All information provided in this paper aims to open a new way to boost high-performance infrared photodetectors.

Electrically Tunable and Dramatically Enhanced Valley-Polarized Emission of Monolayer WS2 at Room Temperature with Plasmonic Archimedes Spiral Nanostructures

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have intrinsic valley degrees of freedom, making them appealing for exploiting valleytronic applications in information storage and processing. WS₂ monolayer possesses two inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone, each valley coupling selectively with a circular polarization of light. The degree of valley polarization (DVP) under the excitation of circularly polarized light (CPL) is a parameter that determines the purity of valley polarized photoluminescence (PL) of monolayer WS₂ . Here efficient tailoring of valley-polarized PL from monolayer WS₂ at room temperature (RT) through surface plasmon-exciton interactions with plasmonic Archimedes spiral (PAS) nanostructures is reported. The DVP of WS₂ at RT can be enhanced from <5% to 40% and 50% by using 2 turns (2T) and 4 turns (4T) of PAS, respectively. Further enhancement and control of excitonic valley polarization is demonstrated by electrostatically doping monolayer WS₂ . For CPL on WS₂ -2TPAS heterostructures, the 40% valley polarization is enhanced to 70% by modulating the carrier doping via a backgate, which may be attributed to the screening of momentum-dependent long-range electron-hole exchange interactions. The manifestation of electrically tunable valley-polarized emission from WS₂ -PAS heterostructures presents a new strategy toward harnessing valley excitons for application in ultrathin valleytronic devices.

Nanophotonic Color Routing

Recent advances in low-dimensional materials and nanofabrication technologies have stimulated many breakthroughs in the field of nanophotonics such as metamaterials and plasmonics that provide efficient ways of light manipulation at a subwavelength scale. The representative structure-induced spectral engineering techniques have demonstrated superior design of freedom compared with natural materials such as pigment/dye. In particular, the emerging spectral routing scheme enables extraordinary light manipulation in both frequency-domain and spatial-domain with high-efficiency utilization of the full spectrum, which is critically important for various applications and may open up entirely new operating paradigms. In this review, a comparative introduction on the operating mechanisms of spectral routing and spectral filtering schemes is given and recent progress on various color nanorouters based on metasurfaces, plasmonics, dielectric antennas is reviewed with a focus on the potential application in high-resolution imaging. With a thorough analysis and discussion on the advanced properties and drawbacks of various techniques, this report is expected to provide an overview and vision for the future development and application of nanophotonic color (spectral) routing techniques.

Control of light-valley interactions in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides with nanophotonic structures

Electronic valley in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) offers a new degree of freedom for information storage and processing. The valley pseudospin can be optically encoded by photons with specific helicity, enabling the construction of electronic information devices with both high performance and low power consumption. Robust detection, manipulation and transport of the valley pseudospins at room temperature are still challenging because of the short lifetime of valley-polarized carriers and excitons. Integrating 2D TMDCs with nanophotonic objects such as plasmonic nanostructures provides a competitive solution to address the challenge. The research in this field is of practical interest and can also present rich physics of light-matter interactions. In this minireview, recent progress on using nanophotonic strategies to enhance the valley polarization degree, especially at room temperature, is highlighted. Open questions, major challenges, and interesting future developments in manipulating the valley information in 2D semiconductors with the help of nanophotonic structures will also be discussed.

Patchwork metasurface quantum well photodetectors with broadened photoresponse

Complex lightwave manipulation such as broadband absorption has been realized with metasurfaces based on laterally arranged metal-dielectric-metal cavities with different geometries. However, application of these metasurfaces for optoelectronic devices by incorporating functional dielectrics remains challenging. Here, we integrate a quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) with a metasurface made of a patchwork of square cavities with different dimensions arranged in a subwavelength unit cell. Our detector realizes wideband photoresponse approaching the entire responsivity spectrum of the QWIP-single-sized square cavities can utilize only 60% of the possible bandwidth-and external quantum efficiencies of up to 78% at 6.8 µm. Our highly flexible design scheme enables integration of photodetectors and metasurfaces with arbitrary arrangements of cavities selectively responding to incidence with a specific wavefront.
