Visible-Light-Induced Difunctionalization of 3-Butenoic Acid with Bromodifluoromethyl Heteroarylsulfones

Herein, we report a visible-light-induced iridium-promoted direct bifunctionalization of 3-butenoic acid with bromodifluoromethyl heteroarylsulfones. This methodology enables the concurrent introduction of difluoromethyl heteroarylsulfone and bromine groups into 3-butenoic acid under mild reaction conditions. Various α-substituted 3-butenoic acids and bromodifluoromethyl heteroarylsulfones were found to be compatible, yielding the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. This method opens a new route for the synthesis of fluorocarboxylic acid derivatives.

Syn-Selective Chlorosulfonylation of Alkynes via a Copper-Powder-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Addition Reaction and Mechanistic Studies

Copper-powder-catalyzed syn-selective chlorosulfonylation of readily available alkynes by an atom transfer radical addition (ATAR) process has been developed, providing straightforward access to a broad range of (Z)-β-chlorovinylsulfones in good yields under mild conditions. In addition, this method is ligand-free and features excellent stereoselectivity and high atom economy. Moreover, the product was obtained without an apparent loss of yield when the reaction was performed on the gram scale at a low catalyst loading. In this reaction, the copper powder not only acts as a sulfone radical initiator but also produces the catalytically active CuCl species. Mechanistic investigations and DFT calculation studies revealed that the stereoselectivity is controlled by the thermodynamic stabilities of the in situ-generated cyclic alkenyl Cu^II complex intermediate, which can serve as a chlorine atom transfer agent.

Assembly of tetracyclic tetrahydrocarbazoles via a visible-light promoted cascade process

A photocatalytic cascade reaction of alkene tethered indoles and bromodifluoroacetate esters has been developed, which provides a novel access to tetracyclic tetrahydrocarbazole derivatives.

Catalyst-free gem-chlorosulfurization of difluoromethyl-substituted diazo compounds with disulfide and PhICl2

A series of gem-chlorosulfurization products bearing difluoromethyl substituents were synthesized in high to excellent yields directly from p-toluenesulfonyl difluorodiazoethane (TsCF₂CHN₂), disulfides and PhICl₂ without any catalysts or additives. The mild reaction conditions and high functional group compatibility indicated the utility and sustainability of the method. In addition, the gem-chlorosulfurization products could be efficiently converted to sulfur-containing and aryl substituted difluoromethyl derivatives by a feasible multi-component operation.

C-Alkylation of alkali metal carbanions with olefins

C-Alkylations of alkali metal carbanions with olefins, first reported five decades ago, is a class of reaction undergoing a resurgence in organic synthesis in recent years. As opposed to expectations from classical chemistry and transition metal-catalysis, here olefins behave as closed-shell electrophiles. Reactions range from highly reactive alkyllithiums giving rise to anionic polymerization, to moderately reactive alkylpotassium or alkylsodium compounds that give rise to defined, controlled and bimolecular chemistry. This review presents a brief historical overview on C-alkylation of alkali metal carbanions with olefins (typically mediated by KOtBu and KHMDS), highlights contemporary applications and features developing mechanistic understanding, thereby serving as a platform for future studies and the widespread use of this class of reaction in organic synthesis.
