Nanostructured spinel cobalt ferrites: Fe and Co chemical state, cation distribution and size effects by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Cysteamine-Anchored MOF through Post-Synthetic Modification Strategy for the Effective Removal of Mercury from Water

The introduction of cysteamine functionality, referred to as Q-ZIF-67-SH, was successfully achieved through postsynthetic modification while maintaining the structural and thermal stability of the quasi metal-organic framework Q-ZIF-67. By subjecting ZIF-67 to controlled partial deligandation at 310 °C under an air atmosphere, a substantial number of unsaturated cobalt sites were generated within the quasi ZIF-67 (Q-ZIF-67) structure. These unsaturated cobalt sites facilitated effective coordination with cysteamine, resulting in the development of the thiol-functionalized framework Q-ZIF-67-SH. The potential of these metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of hazardous Hg(II) was investigated. Various factors, such as the type of sorbent, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of Hg(II), and presence of coexisting ions, were thoroughly examined and comprehensively explained. Thiol-anchored MOF significantly enhanced the efficiency of Hg(II) removal, achieving an impressive removal rate of up to 99.2%. Furthermore, it demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of 994 mg g-1 and a distribution coefficient of 2.5 × 106 mL g-1. A good correspondence with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model was observed through the fitting of adsorption kinetics and the isotherm model. The thermodynamic data strongly indicate that the adsorptive removal of Hg(II) is characterized by endothermicity and spontaneity. This signifies that the process is energetically favorable and has potential for efficient Hg(II) removal. Therefore, the Q-ZIF-67-SH sorbent emerges as a promising and advantageous option for the removal of Hg(II) from water.

2D nature of magnetic states at SnO2 surfaces: a combined experimental and theoretical study

For undoped SnO2, room temperature ferromagnetism could be seen uniquely in 2-dimensional configurations, particularly in ultra-thin films (whose thickness is ideally below 100 nm). Both bulk samples and nano-powders of pristine SnO2 are diamagnetic, indicating that a 2D surface is a key point in shaping up the magnetic properties in SnO2. As a complement to our experiments, we have performed a series of quantum-mechanical calculations for the bulk rutile-structure SnO2 as well as its (001) and (101) surfaces. The calculations included several atomic configurations with and without vacancies in/under the studied surfaces. The stability of the non-magnetic ground state of rutile SnO2 bulk was cross-checked and confirmed by its phonon spectrum computed within the harmonic approximation. Regarding the surfaces, the bulk-like (001) surface containing Sn vacancies has turned out to be ferromagnetic, while the shift of Sn vacancies under the surface resulted in a more complex ferrimagnetic state. The bulk-like (001) surface without vacancies and that with the O vacancies are predicted to be non-magnetic. Regarding the (101) surfaces, those terminated by a single layer of oxygen atoms and those terminated by tin atoms are non-magnetic, while a surface terminated by two layers of oxygen has turned out to be ferromagnetic.

A Polymer-Derived Co(Fe)Ox Oxygen Evolution Catalyst Benefiting from the Oxidative Dehydrogenative Coupling of Cobalt Porphyrins

Thin films of cobalt porphyrin conjugated polymers bearing different substituents are prepared by oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) and investigated as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Interestingly, the electrocatalytic activity originates from polymer-derived, highly transparent Co(Fe)Ox species formed under operational alkaline conditions. Structural, compositional, electrical, and electrochemical characterizations reveal that the newly formed active catalyst greatly benefited from both the polymeric conformation of the porphyrin-based thin film and the inclusion of the iron-based species originating from the oCVD reaction. High-resolution mass spectrometry analyses combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that a close relationship exists between the porphyrin substituent, the extension of the π-conjugated system cobalt porphyrin conjugated polymer, and the dynamics of the polymer conversion leading to catalytically active Co(Fe)Ox species. This work evidences the precatalytic role of cobalt porphyrin conjugated polymers and uncovers the benefit of extended π-conjugation of the molecular matrix and iron inclusion on the formation and performance of the true active catalyst.

Cyclohexane Oxidative Dehydrogenation on Graphene-Oxide-Supported Cobalt Ferrite Nanohybrids: Effect of Dynamic Nature of Active Sites on Reaction Selectivity

In this work, we investigated cyclohexane oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) catalyzed by cobalt ferrite nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO). We aim to identify the active sites that are specifically responsible for full and partial dehydrogenation using advanced spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy (XPEEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) along with kinetic analysis. Spectroscopically, we propose that Fe3+/Td sites could exclusively produce benzene through full cyclohexane dehydrogenation, while kinetic analysis shows that oxygen-derived species (O*) are responsible for partial dehydrogenation to form cyclohexene in a single catalytic sojourn. We unravel the dynamic cooperativity between octahedral and tetrahedral sites and the unique role of the support in masking undesired active (Fe3+/Td) sites. This phenomenon was strategically used to control the abundance of these species on the catalyst surface by varying the particle size and the wt % content of the nanoparticles on the RGO support in order to control the reaction selectivity without compromising reaction rates which are otherwise extremely challenging due to the much favorable thermodynamics for complete dehydrogenation and complete combustion under oxidative conditions.

Electromagnetic Performance of NiMgCuZn Ferrite for Hyperthermia Application in Cancer Treatment

Ferrite with high permeability, high magnetic loss, and a low Curie temperature is a highly promising material for hyperthermia applications in cancer treatment. In this work, Ni_(0.29-x)Mg_xCu_0.14Zn_0.60Fe_1.94O_3.94 (NiMgCuZn) ferrites were prepared at different Mg ion concentrations. The dependence of the Mg ion contents on the crystal structure, magnetic, and permeability properties of NiMgCuZn ferrite was investigated. Structural characterization showed a high crystallinity of the materials and an increase in the lattice constant with the Mg ion content. The magnetic hysteresis loops revealed that the saturation magnetization decreased with an increasing Mg content. Furthermore, the permeability measurements showed an increase in permeability and magnetic loss with the doping of Mg. More importantly, the Curie temperature of the NiMgCuZn ferrite decreases with the Mg ion content and reaches 42.37 °C for x = 0.26 as well as a real permeability of ∼797.88@1 MHz and a magnetic loss of 0.316@1 MHz, which meet the requirements of tumor hyperthermia.

Design of a Novel Nanosensors Based on Green Synthesized CoFe2O4/Ca-Alginate Nanocomposite-Coated QCM for Rapid Detection of Pb(II) Ions

Pb(II) is a significant contaminant that is known to have negative effects on both humans and animals. Recent industrial operations have exacerbated these consequences, and their release of several contaminants, including lead ions, has drawn attention to the potential effects on human health. Therefore, there is a lot of interest in the rapid, accurate, and selective detection of lead ions in various environmental samples. Sensors-based nanomaterials are a significant class among the many tools and methods developed and applied for such purposes. Therefore, a novel green synthesized cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) nanoparticles and functionalized CoFe₂O₄/Ca-alginate nanocomposite was designed and successfully synthesized for the fabrication of nanoparticles and nanocomposite-coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) nanosensors to detect the low concentrations of Pb(II) ions in the aqueous solutions at different temperatures. The structural and morphological properties of synthesized nanoparticles and nanocomposite were characterized using different tools such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential analyzer (ζ-potential), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The QCM results revealed that the green synthesized CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles and functionalized CoFe₂O₄/Ca-alginate nanocomposite-coated QCM nanosensors exhibited high sensitivity, stability, and rapid detection of Pb(II) ions in the aqueous solutions at different temperature. The lowest detection limit for Pb(II) ions in the aqueous solutions could reach 125 ng, which resulted in a frequency shift of 27.49 ± 0.81, 23.63 ± 0.90, and 19.57 ± 0.86 Hz (Δf) for the QCM detector coated with green synthesized CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles thin films, and 25.85 ± 0.85, 33.87 ± 0.73, and 6.87 ± 0.08 Hz (Δf) for the QCM detector coated with CoFe₂O₄/Ca-Alg nanocomposite thin films in a real-time of about 11, 13, and 13 min at 25 °C, 35 °C, and 45 °C, respectively. In addition, the resonance frequency change results showed the superiority of functionalized CoFe₂O₄/Ca-alginate nanocomposite coated QCM nanosensor over CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles towards Pb(II) ions detecting, which attributed to the beneficial properties of alginate biopolymer.

A guide to the design of magnetic particle imaging tracers for biomedical applications

Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is a novel and emerging non-invasive technique that promises to deliver high quality images, no radiation, high depth penetration and nearly no background from tissues. Signal intensity and spatial resolution in MPI are heavily dependent on the properties of tracers. Hence the selection of these nanoparticles for various applications in MPI must be carefully considered to achieve optimum results. In this review, we will provide an overview of the principle of MPI and the key criteria that are required for tracers in order to generate the best signals. Nanoparticle materials such as magnetite, metal ferrites, maghemite, zero valent iron@iron oxide core@shell, iron carbide and iron-cobalt alloy nanoparticles will be discussed as well as their synthetic pathways. Since surface modifications play an important role in enabling the use of these tracers for biomedical applications, coating options including the transfer from organic to inorganic media will also be discussed. Finally, we will discuss different biomedical applications and provide our insights into the most suitable tracer for each of these applications.

Role of Nanoscale Inhomogeneities in Co2FeO4 Catalysts during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Spinel-type catalysts are promising anode materials for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), exhibiting low overpotentials and providing long-term stability. In this study, we compared two structurally equal Co₂FeO₄ spinels with nominally identical stoichiometry and substantially different OER activities. In particular, one of the samples, characterized by a metastable precatalyst state, was found to quickly achieve its steady-state optimum operation, while the other, which was initially closer to the ideal crystallographic spinel structure, never reached such a state and required 168 mV higher potential to achieve 1 mA/cm². In addition, the enhanced OER activity was accompanied by a larger resistance to corrosion. More specifically, using various ex situ, quasi in situ, and operando methods, we could identify a correlation between the catalytic activity and compositional inhomogeneities resulting in an X-ray amorphous Co²⁺-rich minority phase linking the crystalline spinel domains in the as-prepared state. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that these Co²⁺-rich domains transform during OER to structurally different Co³⁺-rich domains. These domains appear to be crucial for enhancing OER kinetics while exhibiting distinctly different redox properties. Our work emphasizes the necessity of the operando methodology to gain fundamental insight into the activity-determining properties of OER catalysts and presents a promising catalyst concept in which a stable, crystalline structure hosts the disordered and active catalyst phase.

Transformation of CoFe2O4 spinel structure into active and robust CoFe alloy/N-doped carbon electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Electrochemical water splitting is an environmentally benign technology employed for H₂ production; however, it is critically hampered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the positive electrode. In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon-coated CoFe electrocatalysts were synthesized via a three-step route comprising (1) hydrothermal reaction, (2) in-situ polymerization of dopamine and (3) carbonization. The effect of carbonized polydopamine on the overall physicochemical properties and electrochemical activity of CoFe catalysts was systematically studied. By controlling and optimizing the ratio of CoFe₂O₄ and dopamine contents, a transformation of the CoFe₂O₄ structure to CoFe alloy was observed. It was found that CoFe/NC_30% (prepared with 30% dopamine) exhibits an excellent catalytic activity towards OER. A small overpotential of 340 mV was required to generate a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. More importantly, the CoFe/NC_30% catalyst reflected exceptional durability for at least 24 h. This research sheds light on the development of affordable, highly efficient, and durable electrocatalysts for OER.

Designing bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) for aqueous catalysis: Co/Zn-ZIF-8 as a cyclic-durable catalyst for hydrogen peroxide oxidative decomposition of organic dyes in water

ZIF-8 is well known hybrid material that is self-assembled from inorganic and organic moieties. It has several potential applications due to its unique structure. One of these potential applications is in advanced oxidation processes (AOP) via a heterogeneous catalysis system. The use of modified ZIF-8/H2O2 for the destruction of the azo dye methyl orange (MO) is presented in this work to explore its efficacy. This work presents the bimetallic Co/Zn-ZIF-8 as an efficient catalyst to promote H2O2 oxidation of the MO dye. Co/Zn-ZIF-8 was synthesized through a hydrothermal process, and the pristine structure was confirmed using XRD, FTIR, and XPS. The Co/Zn-ZIF-8/H2O2 system successfully decolorized MO at the selected pH 6.5. It was found that more than 90% of MO (10 ppm) was degraded within only about 50 minutes. Proposed radical and redox mechanisms are presented for H2O2 decomposition where the redox mechanism is suggested to predominate via a Co(ii)/Co(iii) redox consecutive cyclic process.

Effect of different molecular coatings on the heating properties of maghemite nanoparticles

In this work, the effect of different molecular coatings on the alternating magnetic field-induced heating properties of 15 nm maghemite nanoparticles (NPs) in water dispersions was studied at different frequencies (159-782 kHz) and field amplitudes (100-400 G). The original hydrophobic oleate coating was replaced with dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) or polyethylene glycol trimethoxysilane (PEGTMS), while cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) or stearic acid-poloxamer 188 (SA-P188) was intercalated or encapsulated, respectively, to transfer the dispersions into water. Surface modification, based on intercalation processes, induced clustering phenomena with the formation of spherical-like assemblies (CTAB and SA-P188), while ligand-exchange strategies kept the particles isolated. The clustering phenomenon has detrimental effects on the heating performances compared with isolated systems, in line with the reduction of Brown relaxation times. Furthermore, broader comprehension of the heating phenomenon in this dynamic system is obtained by following the evolution of SPA and ILP with time and temperature beyond the initial stage.

Tailoring defects and nanocrystal transformation for optimal heating power in bimagnetic CoyFe1-yO@CoxFe3-xO4 particles

The effects of cobalt incorporation in spherical heterostructured iron oxide nanocrystals (NCs) of sub-critical size have been explored by colloidal chemistry methods. Synchrotron X-ray total scattering methods suggest that cobalt (Co) substitution in rock salt iron oxide NCs tends to remedy their vacant iron sites, offering a higher degree of resistance to oxidative conversion. Self-passivation still creates a spinel-like shell, but with a higher volume fraction of the rock salt Co-containing phase in the core. The higher divalent metal stoichiometry in the rock salt phase, with increasing Co content, results in a population of unoccupied tetrahedral metal sites in the spinel part, likely through oxidative shell creation, involving an ordered defect-clustering mechanism, directly correlated to core stabilization. To shed light on the effects of Co-substitution and atomic-scale defects (vacant sites), Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the designed NCs, with desirable, enhanced magnetic properties (cf. exchange bias and coercivity), are developed with magnetocrystalline anisotropy which increases due to a relatively low content of Co ions in the lattice. The growth of optimally performing candidates combines also a strongly exchange-coupled system, secured through a high volumetric ratio rock salt phase, interfaced by a not so defective spinel shell. In view of these requirements, specific absorption rate (SAR) calculations demonstrate that the rock salt core sufficiently protected from oxidation and the heterostructure preserved over time, play a key role in magnetically mediated heating efficacies, for potential use of such NCs in magnetic hyperthermia applications.

Catalytic performance of mixed MxCo3−xO4 (M = Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn) spinels obtained by combustion synthesis for preferential carbon monoxide oxidation (CO-PROX): insights into the factors controlling catalyst selectivity and activity

A series of mixed cobalt spinel catalysts (MxCo3−xO4 (M = Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn)) was synthesized and tested in the CO-PROX reaction and in sole CO oxidation and H2 oxidation as references.

A Novel Trace-Level Ammonia Gas Sensing Based on Flexible PAni-CoFe2O4 Nanocomposite Film at Room Temperature

In this study, we developed a new chemi-resistive, flexible and selective ammonia (NH3) gas sensor. The sensor was prepared by depositing thin film of polyaniline-cobalt ferrite (PAni-CoFe2O4) nanocomposite on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) through an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The prepared PAni-CoFe2O4 nanocomposite and flexible PET-PAni-CoFe2O4 sensor were evaluated for their thermal stability, surface morphology and materials composition. The response to NH3 gas of the developed sensor was examined thoroughly in the range of 1-50 ppm at room temperature. The sensor with 50 wt% CoFe2O4 NPs content showed an optimum selectivity to NH3 molecules, with a 118.3% response towards 50 ppm in 24.3 s response time. Furthermore, the sensor showed good reproducibility, ultra-low detection limit (25 ppb) and excellent flexibility. In addition, the relative humidity effect on the sensor performance was investigated. Consequently, the flexible PET-PAni-CoFe2O4 sensor is a promising candidate for trace-level on-site sensing of NH3 in wearable electronic or portable devices.

Tailoring the defects of sub-100 nm multipodal titanium nitride/oxynitride nanotubes for efficient water splitting performance

Deciphering the photocatalytic-defect relationship of photoanodes can pave the way towards the rational design for high-performance solar energy conversion. Herein, we rationally designed uniform and aligned ultrathin sub-100 nm multipodal titanium nitride/oxynitride nanotubes (TiON _x NTs) (x = 2, 4, and 6 h) via the anodic oxidation of Ti-foil in a formamide-based electrolyte followed by annealing under ammonia gas for different durations. XPS, XPS imaging, Auger electron spectra, and positron annihilation spectroscopy disclosed that the high nitridation rate induced the generation of a mixture of Ti-nitride and oxynitride with various vacancy-type defects, including monovacancies, vacancy clusters, and a few voids inside TiO _x NTs. These defects decreased the bandgap energy to 2.4 eV, increased visible-light response, and enhanced the incident photon-to-current collection efficiency (IPCE) and the photocurrent density of TiON _x NTs by nearly 8 times compared with TiO₂NTs, besides a quick carrier diffusion at the nanotube/electrolyte interface. The water-splitting performance of sub-100 nm TiON₆NT multipodal nanotubes was superior to the long compacted TiON _x NTs with different lengths and TiO₂ nanoparticles. Thus, the optimization of the nitridation rate tailors the defect concentration, thereby achieving the highest solar conversion efficiency.

On the synthesis of bi-magnetic manganese ferrite-based core-shell nanoparticles

Multifunctional nano-heterostructures (NHSs) with controlled morphology are cardinal in many applications, but the understanding of the nanoscale colloidal chemistry is yet to be fulfilled. The stability of the involved crystalline phases in different solvents at mid- and high-temperatures and reaction kinetics considerably affect the nucleation and growth of the materials and their final architecture. The formation mechanism of manganese ferrite-based core-shell NHSs is herein investigated. The effects of the core size (8, 10, and 11 nm), the shell nature (cobalt ferrite and spinel iron oxide) and the polarity of the solvent (toluene and octanol) on the dissolution phenomena of manganese ferrite are also studied. Noteworthily, the combined use of bulk (powder X-ray diffraction, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DC magnetometry) and nanoscale techniques (HRTEM and STEM-EDX) provides new insights into the manganese ferrite dissolution phenomena, the colloidal stability in an organic environment, and the critical size below which dissolution is complete. Moreover, the dissolved manganese and iron ions react further, leading to an inverted core-shell in the mother liquor solution, paving the way to novel synthetic pathways in nanocrystal design. The MnFe₂O₄@CoFe₂O₄ core-shell heterostructures were also employed as heat mediators, exploiting the magnetic coupling between a hard (CoFe₂O₄) and a soft phase (MnFe₂O₄).

Ibuprofen degradation using a Co-doped carbon matrix derived from peat as a peroxymonosulphate activator

The wider presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in nature is a major cause for concern in society. Among pharmaceuticals, the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen has commonly been found in aquatic and soil environments. We produced a Co-doped carbon matrix (Co-P 850) through the carbonization of Co²⁺ saturated peat and used it as a peroxymonosulphate activator to aid ibuprofen degradation. The properties of Co-P 850 were analysed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy filtered transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that Co/Fe oxides were generated and tightly embedded into the carbon matrix after carbonization. The degradation results indicated that high temperature and slightly acidic to neutral conditions (pH = 5 to 7.5) promoted ibuprofen degradation efficiency in the Co-P 850/peroxymonosulphate system. Analysis showed that approx. 52% and 75% of the dissolved organic carbon was removed after 2 h and 5 h of reaction time, respectively. Furthermore, the existence of chloride and bicarbonate had adverse effects on the degradation of ibuprofen. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed that SO₄^·-, ·OH and O₂^·- radicals together contributed to the high ibuprofen degradation efficiency. In addition, we identified 13 degradation intermediate compounds and an ibuprofen degradation pathway by mass spectrometry analysis and quantum computing. Based on the results and methods presented in this study, we propose a novel way for the synthesis of a Co-doped catalyst from spent NaOH-treated peat and the efficient catalytic degradation of ibuprofen from contaminated water.

Solvothermal phase change induced morphology transformation in CdS/CoFe2O4@Fe2O3 hierarchical nanosphere arrays as ternary heterojunction photoanodes for solar water splitting

The design of efficient heterojunction photoanodes with appropriate band alignment and ease of charge separation has been one of the most highly focused research areas in photoelectrodes.

Preferential Oxidation of CO over CoFe2O4 and M/CoFe2O4 (M = Ce, Co, Cu or Zr) Catalysts

CoFe2O4 prepared by sol-gel has been examined with respect to its catalytic performance for preferential CO oxidation in a H2-rich stream. In turn, the promoting effects of incorporation of Ce, Co, Cu, and Zr by impregnation on the surface of CoFe2O4 on the process are examined as well. The catalysts have been characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), as well as diffuse reflectance infrared DRIFTS under reaction conditions with the aim of establishing structure/activity relationships for the mentioned catalyst/process. It is shown that while the presence of the various metals on CoFe2O4 hinders a low temperature CO oxidation process, it appreciably enhances the activity above 125 °C. This is basically attributed to the surface modifications, i.e. cobalt oxidation, induced in CoFe2O4 upon introduction of the metals. In turn, no methanation activity is observed in any case except for the copper-containing catalyst, in which achievement of reduced states of cobalt appears most favored.

Defect-assisted synthesis of magneto-plasmonic silver-spinel ferrite heterostructures in a flower-like architecture

Artificial nano-heterostructures (NHs) with controlled morphology, obtained by combining two or more components in several possible architectures, make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Here, we propose an oleate-based solvothermal approach to design silver-spinel ferrite flower-like NHs. Small oleate-coated silver nanoparticles were used as seeds for the growth of magnetic spinel ferrite (cobalt ferrite and spinel iron oxide) nanodomains on their surface. With the aim of producing homogeneous flower-like heterostructures, a careful study of the effect of the concentration of precursors, the reaction temperature, the presence of water, and the chemical nature of the spinel ferrite was carried out. The magnetic and optical properties of the NHs were also investigated. A heterogeneous growth of the spinel ferrite phase on the silver nanoparticles, through a possible defect-assisted mechanism, was suggested in the light of the high concentration of stacking faults (intrinsic and twins) in the silver seeds, revealed by Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction patterns and High-Resolution electron microscopy.

Impact of sonochemical synthesis condition on the structural and physical properties of MnFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles

Herein, we report sonochemical synthesis of MnFe₂O₄ spinel ferrite nanoparticles using UZ SONOPULS HD 2070 Ultrasonic homogenizer (frequency: 20 kHz and power: 70 W). The sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input cause appreciable changes in the structural, cation distribution and physical properties of MnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles. The average crystallite size of synthesized MnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles was increased with increase of sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input. The occupational formula by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles was (Mn_0.29Fe_0.42)[Mn_0.71Fe_1.58]O₄ and (Mn_0.28Fe_0.54) [Mn_0.72Fe_1.46]O₄ at sonication time 20 min and 80 min, respectively. The value of the saturation magnetization was increased from 1.9 emu/g to 52.5 emu/g with increase of sonication time 20 min to 80 min at constant 50% amplitude of ultrasonic power input, whereas, it was increased from 30.2 emu/g to 59.4 emu/g with increase of the percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input at constant sonication time 60 min. The highest value of dielectric constant (ε') was 499 at 1 kHz for nanoparticles at sonication time 20 min, whereas, ac conductivity was 368 × 10^-9 S/cm at 1 kHz for spinel ferrite nanoparticles at sonication time 20 min. The demonstrated controllable physical characteristics over sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input are a key step to design spinel ferrite material of desired properties for specific application. The investigation of microwave operating frequency suggest that these prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles are potential candidate for fabrication of devices at high frequency applications.

Solution chemistry allows the crystallisation of range of iron oxides, including MFe₂O₄ spinels, MFeO₃ perovskites and hexaferrites, such as BaFe₁₂O₁₉, with nanoscale crystallinity and properties suitable for fields such as catalysis and electronics.
