Trends in Research and Development for CO2 Capture and Sequestration

Technological and medical advances over the past few decades epitomize human capabilities. However, the increased life expectancies and concomitant land-use changes have significantly contributed to the release of ∼830 gigatons of CO₂ into the atmosphere over the last three decades, an amount comparable to the prior two and a half centuries of CO₂ emissions. The United Nations has adopted a pledge to achieve "net zero", i.e., yearly removing as much CO₂ from the atmosphere as the amount emitted due to human activities, by the year 2050. Attaining this goal will require a concerted effort by scientists, policy makers, and industries all around the globe. The development of novel materials on industrial scales to selectively remove CO₂ from mixtures of gases makes it possible to mitigate CO₂ emissions using a multipronged approach. Broadly, the CO₂ present in the atmosphere can be captured using materials and processes for biological, chemical, and geological technologies that can sequester CO₂ while also reducing our dependence on fossil-fuel reserves. In this review, we used the curated literature available in the CAS Content Collection to present a systematic analysis of the various approaches taken by scientists and industrialists to restore carbon balance in the environment. Our analysis highlights the latest trends alongside the associated challenges.

Is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Really So Expensive? An Analysis of Cascading Costs and CO2 Emissions Reduction of Industrial CCS Implementation on the Construction of a Bridge

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an essential technology to mitigate global CO₂ emissions from power and industry sectors. Despite the increasing recognition of its importance to achieve the net-zero target, current CCS deployment is far behind targeted ambitions. A key reason is that CCS is often perceived as too expensive. The costs of CCS have however traditionally been looked at from the industrial plant perspective, which does not necessarily reflect the end user's one. This paper addresses the incomplete view by investigating the impact of implementing CCS in industrial facilities on the overall costs and CO₂ emissions of end-user products and services. As an example, we examine the extent to which an increase in costs of raw materials (cement and steel) due to CCS impacts the costs of building a bridge. Results show that although CCS significantly increases cement and steel costs, the subsequent increment in the overall bridge construction cost remains marginal (∼1%). This 1% cost increase, however, enables a deep reduction in CO₂ emissions (∼51%) associated with the bridge construction. Although more research is needed in this area, this work is the first step to a better understanding of the real cost and benefits of CCS.

From Unavoidable CO2 Source to CO2 Sink? A Cement Industry Based on CO2 Mineralization

The cement industry emits 7% of the global anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing the GHG emissions of the cement industry is challenging since cement production stoichiometrically generates CO₂ during calcination of limestone. In this work, we propose a pathway towards a carbon-neutral cement industry using CO₂ mineralization. CO₂ mineralization converts CO₂ into a thermodynamically stable solid and byproducts that can potentially substitute cement. Hence, CO₂ mineralization could reduce the carbon footprint of the cement industry via two mechanisms: (1) capturing and storing CO₂ from the flue gas of the cement plant, and (2) reducing clinker usage by substituting cement. However, CO₂ mineralization also generates GHG emissions due to the energy required for overcoming the slow reaction kinetics. We, therefore, analyze the carbon footprint of the combined CO₂ mineralization and cement production based on life cycle assessment. Our results show that combined CO₂ mineralization and cement production using today's energy mix could reduce the carbon footprint of the cement industry by 44% or even up to 85% considering the theoretical potential. Low-carbon energy or higher blending of mineralization products in cement could enable production of carbon-neutral blended cement. With direct air capture, the blended cement could even become carbon-negative. Thus, our results suggest that developing processes and products for combined CO₂ mineralization and cement production could transform the cement industry from an unavoidable CO₂ source to a CO₂ sink.
