Ultrafine Bi-Sn nanoparticles decorated on carbon aerogels for electrochemical simultaneous determination of dopamine (neurotransmitter) and clozapine (antipsychotic drug)

Wireless, noninvasive therapeutic drug monitoring system for saliva measurement toward medication management of schizophrenia

As an efficient patient management tool of precision medicine, decentralized therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) provides new vision for therapy adherence and health management of schizophrenia in a convenient manner. To dispense with psychologically burdensome blood sampling and to achieve real-time, noninvasive, and continual circulating tracking of drugs with narrow therapeutic window, we study the temporal metabolism of clozapine, an antipsychotic with severe side effect, in rat saliva by a wireless, integrated and patient-friendly smart lollipop sensing system. Highly sensitive and efficient sensing performance with acceptable anti-biofouling property was realized based on the synergistic effect of electrodeposited reduced graphene oxide and ionic liquids in pretreatment-free saliva with low detection limit and good accuracy cross-validated with conventional method. On this basis, continual salivary drug levels with distinctive pharmacokinetics were found in different routes of drug administration. Pilot experiment reveals a strong correlation between blood and saliva clozapine and a positive relationship between drug dosage and salivary drug level, indicating potential applications presented by noninvasive saliva analysis towards patient-centered and personalized pharmacotherapy and adherence management via proposed smart lollipop system.

Recent Advances in Metal Nanocomposite-Based Electrochemical (Bio)Sensors for Pharmaceutical Analysis

Rising rates of drug abuse and pharmaceutical pollution throughout the world as a consequence of increased drug production and utilization pose a serious risk to public health and to environmental integrity. It is thus critical that reliable analytical approaches to detecting drugs and their metabolites in a range of sample matrices be developed. Recent advances in the design of nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors have enabled promising new approaches to pharmaceutical analysis. In particular, the development of a range of novel metal nanocomposites with enhanced catalytic properties has provided a wealth of opportunities for the design of rapid and reliable platforms for the detection of specific pharmaceutical compounds. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of representative metal nanocomposites with synergistic properties and their recent (2017-2022) application in the context of electrochemical sensing as a means of detecting specific antibiotic, tuberculostatic, analgesic, antineoplastic, antipsychotic, and antihypertensive drugs. In discussing these applications, we further explore a variety of testing-related principles, fabrication approaches, characterization techniques, and parameters associated with the sensitivity and selectivity of these sensor platforms before surveying the future outlook regarding the fabrication of next-generation (bio)sensor platforms for use in pharmaceutical analysis.

Application of electrochemical sensors based on nanomaterials modifiers in the determination of antipsychotics

At present, the content of antipsychotics in samples is always analyzed by traditional detection methods, including mass spectrometry (MS), spectrophotometry, fluorescence, capillary electrophoresis (CE). However, conventional methods are cumbersome and complex, require a large sample volume, many pre-processing steps, long analysis cycles, expensive instruments, and need well-trained detection capabilities personnel. In addition, patients with schizophrenia require frequent and painful blood collection procedures, which adds additional treatment costs and time burdens. In view of these factors, electrochemical methods have become the most promising candidate technology for timely analysis due to their low cost, simple operation, excellent sensitivity and specificity. As we all know, nanomaterials play an extremely important role in electrochemical sensing applications. As the sensor modifiers, nanomaterials enable electrochemical analysis to overcome the time-consuming and labor-intensive shortcomings of traditional detection methods, and greatly reduce the research cost. Nanomaterials modified electrodes can be used as sensors to determine the concentration of antipsychotics in organisms quickly and accurately, which is a bright spot in the application of nanomaterials. The combination of different nanomaterials can even form a nanocomposite with a synergistic effect. This paper firstly reviews the application of nanomaterials-modified sensors on the basis of research in the past ten years, reviews the use of nanomaterial-modified sensors to quickly and accurately determine the concentration of antipsychotics in biological samples, and demonstrates a new idea of using nanomaterials sensors for drug monitoring and determination. At the end of this review, a brief overview is given of the limitations and the future prospects of nanomaterial sensors for the determination of antipsychotics concentrations.

Nanochannel Array on Electrochemically Polarized Screen Printed Carbon Electrode for Rapid and Sensitive Electrochemical Determination of Clozapine in Human Whole Blood

Rapid and highly sensitive determination of clozapine (CLZ), a psychotropic drug for the treatment of refractory schizophrenia, in patients is of great significance to reduce the risk of disease recurrence. However, direct electroanalysis of CLZ in human whole blood remains a great challenge owing to the remarkable fouling that occurs in a complex matrix. In this work, a miniaturized, integrated, disposable electrochemical sensing platform based on the integration of nanochannel arrays on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) is demonstrated. The device achieves high determination sensitivity while also offering the electrode anti-fouling and anti-interference capabilities. To enhance the electrochemical performance of SPCE, simple electrochemical polarization including anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction is applied to pretreat SPCE. The electrochemically polarized SPCE (p-SPCE) exhibits an enhanced electrochemical peak signal toward CLZ compared with bare SPCE. An electrochemically assisted self-assembly method (EASA) is utilized to conveniently electrodeposit a vertically ordered mesoporous silica nanomembrane film (VMSF) on the p-SPCE, which could further enrich CLZ through electrostatic interactions. Owing to the dual signal amplification based on the p-SPCE and VMSF nanochannels, the developed VMSF/SPCE sensor enables determination of CLZ in the range from 50 nM to 20 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 28 nM (S/N = 3). Combined with the excellent anti-fouling and anti-interference abilities of VMSF, direct and sensitive determination of CLZ in human blood is also achieved.

Large-Area Vertically Aligned Bismuthene Nanosheet Arrays from Galvanic Replacement Reaction for Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Conversion

There is a lack of straightforward methods to prepare high-quality bismuthene nanosheets, or, even more challengingly, to grow their arrays due to the low melting point and high oxophilicity of bismuth. This synthetic obstacle has hindered their potential applications. In this work, it is demonstrated that the galvanic replacement reaction can do the trick. Under well-controlled conditions, large-area vertically aligned bismuthene nanosheet arrays are grown on Cu substrates of various shapes and sizes. The product features small nanosheet thickness of two to three atomic layers, large surface areas, and abundant porosity between nanosheets. Most remarkably, bismuthene nanosheet arrays grown on Cu foam can enable efficient CO₂ reduction to formate with high Faradaic efficiency of >90%, large current density of 50 mA cm^-2 , and great stability.

Synthesis of a clustered carbon aerogel interconnected by carbon balls from the biomass of taros for construction of a multi-functional electrochemical sensor

In this study, a clustered carbon aerogel interconnected by carbon balls (CCAI-CB) was prepared as an electrode material to construct a multi-functional electrochemical sensor. CCAI-CB derived from taros (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott) possesses meso-macroporous structure and plenty of defective sites, and shows notable activity in electrocatalysis as an electrode material. We investigated the application of CCAI-CB modified glassy carbon electrode (CCAI-CB/GCE) for determination of ascorbic acid (AA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Compared with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified GCE (CNTs/GCE) and bare GCE, CCAI-CB/GCE shows lower detection limit (0.23 μM for AA and 1.31 μM, S/N = 3), higher sensitivities (220.53, 148.86 or 94.39 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 for AA and 83.06 or 49.07 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 for H₂O₂). Concentrations of AA and H₂O₂ in real samples were determined at CCAI-CB/GCE with satisfactory detection results obtained. In addition, when the CCAI-CB/GCE was used for electrocatalysis of other biomolecules, it also exhibits high electrochemical activity. Thus, CCAI-CB could be a promising electrode material for the construction of multi-functional electrochemical sensors.
