Efficient dual-wavelength metasurface for second-order differential edge detection in the ultraviolet

Metasurfaces for edge detection through spatial analog calculations have attracted much attention due to advantages such as a flexible design and small footprint. Up until now, most studies have focused on single-wavelength operation in the near-infrared or visible regions, while little work has been done in the ultraviolet band. It is of significance to explore metasurfaces for edge detection in the ultraviolet band for their great potential in high-resolution imaging and lithography. Here, we propose a dual-wavelength H f O 2 metasurface for edge detection working at 273 nm and 293 nm, with 25% and 72% efficiency, respectively, controlled by the linear polarization of the incident light. The efficient dual-wavelength second-order differential calculation in the ultraviolet band of the metasurface has been confirmed by 1D signal and 2D image processing. It may find applications in the fields of computer vision and bioimaging.

Generation of 2D Airy beams with switchable metasurfaces

Airy beams exhibit intriguing characteristics, such as diffraction-free propagation, self-acceleration, and self-healing, which have aroused great research interest. However, the spatial light modulator that generates Airy beams has problems such as narrow operational bandwidth, high cost, poor phase discretization, and single realization function. In the visible region (λ∼532 nm), we proposed a switchable all-dielectric metasurface for generating transmissive and reflective two-dimensional (2D) Airy beams. The metasurface was mainly composed of titanium dioxide nanopillars and vanadium dioxide substrate. Based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase principle, a high-efficient Airy beam can be generated by controlling the phase transition of vanadium dioxide and changing the polarization state of the incident light. The optimized optical intensity conversion efficiencies of the transmissive and reflective metasurfaces were as high as 97% and 70%, respectively. In the field of biomedical and applied physics, our designed switchable metasurface is expected to offer the possibility of creating compact optical and photonic platforms for efficient generation and dynamic modulation of optical beams and open up a novel path for the application of high-resolution optical imaging systems.

Generation of Airy beam arrays in real and K spaces based on a dielectric metasurface

Airy beams are widely used in various optical devices and optical experiments owing to their unique characteristics such as self-acceleration, self-recovery, and non-diffraction. Here we designed and demonstrated a metasurface capable of encoding two phase distributions independently in dual circular polarization channels. We experimentally observed the generated Airy beam arrays loaded on the metasurface in the real and K spaces. Compared with the traditional method, such method provides a more efficient solution to generate large capacity Airy beam arrays with switchable working modes in the broadband spectrum. The results may pave the way for the integration and miniaturization of micro-nano devices and provide a platform for information processing, particle manipulation, space-time optical wave packets, and Airy lasers.
