Abstract
A novel ratiometric fluorescent probe, namely 5-[(3-dicyanoylidene -5.5-dimethyl) cyclohexenyl-1-ethenyl] salicylaldehyde-3'-hydroxybenzohydrazone (DCSH) is presented for the selective sensing of Zn2+ ion in acetonitrile/water (2/3, pH 7.4) solution. Introducing Zn2+ ions notably caused the peak emission of DCSH to shift from 560 nm to 646 nm, accompanied with a significant enhancement of its intensity. A vivid change in fluorescence color from yellow to red facilitated the immediate identification of Zn2+ ions by visual observation. DCSH exhibits substantial Stokes shifts (110 and 196 nm), rapid detection capability (within 10 s) and high sensitivity to Zn2+ ions, achieving a limit of detection of 31.2 nM. The response mechanism is supposed to involve the block of C = N bond isomerization and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) along with the enhancement of fluorescence through chelation (CHEF) effect. DCSH was effectively utilized for ratiometric fluorescence imaging to monitor exogenous Zn2+ concentrations in HeLa cells. Significantly, DCSH is capable of monitoring elevated levels of Zn2+ ion during apoptosis induced by L-Buthionine sulfoximine (BSO).

Abstract
A donor-acceptor Schiff-base fluorescent probe BKS with chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism was designed and synthesized via benzophenone(Acceptor), salicylaldehyde and carbazole(Donor) for Al3+ detection, which exhibited typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. BKS probe could provide outstanding selectivity to Al3+ with a prominent fluorescence "turn-on" at 545 nm in a wide pH range from 2 to 11. By the Job's plot, the binding stoichiometry ratio of probe BKS to Al3+ was determined 1:1. The proposed strategy offered a very low limit of detection at 1.486 µM in THF/H2O(V/V = 1:4, HEPBS = 10 mM, pH = 7.40), which was significantly lower than the standard of WHO (Huang et al., Microchem J 151:104195, 2019)-(Yongjie Ding et al., Spectrochim Acta Mol Biomol Spectrosc 167:59-65, 2021) guidelines for drinking water. BKS probe could provide a wider linear detection range of 50 to 500 µM. Furthermore, the probe could hardly be interfered by other examined metal ions. The analysis of Al3+ in real water samples with appropriate recovery (100.72 to 102.85) with a relative standard deviation less than 2.82% indicated the accuracy and precision of BKS probe and the great potential in the environmental monitoring of Al3+.

Abstract
A molecule, namely 2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-6-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (BIBTB), having a two-way proton transfer unit of thiazole and imidazole moieties was synthesized and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and single-crystal diffraction studies. Steady state and time-resolved spectral studies of BIBTB support excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), causing imine-amine tautomerization through a two-way 6-membered H-bonded ring, where the N atoms of benzothiazole and the benzoimidazole unit are involved as proton acceptor sites. Interestingly, in a nonpolar and moderately polar solvent, photoisomerization in BIBTB is found to be favored toward the thiazole ring, whereas in a highly polar solvent, it is favored toward the imidazole ring. A spectral comparison of BIBTB with judicially designed molecules 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (HBT) and 2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (BIB) supports these inferences. Theoretical calculation using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) at CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level supports the existence of two low-energy 6-membered hydrogen-bonded planar conformers in the ground state in the gas phase and in solvents of different dielectrics. The potential energy curves (PECs) calculated along the proton transfer (PT) coordinate are found to have a high energy barrier in the ground state and to be barrierless or have a low energy barrier in the excited state for both the forms. The calculated vertical excitation and the emission energy from the relaxed excited and PT states show good correlation with the experimental spectral data. Aggregation of BIBTB in water with red shifted emission was established from X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, solid state emission, and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurement. The molecule BIBTB also acts as a fluorescence probe for sensing the explosive picric acid in the subnano scale and can be used to determine the proportion of water in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent.

Abstract
Zinc is a vital metal element with extensive applications in various fields such as industry, metallurgy, agriculture, food, and healthcare. For living organisms, zinc ions are indispensable, and their deficiency can lead to physiological and metabolic abnormalities that cause multiple diseases. Hence, there is a significant need for selective recognition and effective detection of free zinc ions. As a probe method with high sensitivity, high selectivity, real-time monitoring, safety, harmlessness and ease of operation, fluorescent probes have been widely used in metal ion identification studies, and many convenient, low-cost and easy-to-operate fluorescent probes for Zn2+ detection have been developed. This article reviews the latest research advances in fluorescent chemosensors for Zn2+ detection from 2019 to 2023. In particular, sensors working through photo-induced electron transfer (PET), excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanisms are described. We discuss the use of various recognition mechanisms in detecting zinc ions through specific cases, some of which have been validated through theoretical calculations.

Abstract
Recently, the dual-fluorescent phenomena of excited state intramolecular thiol proton transfer (ESIPT) for 3-thiolflavone derivative (3NTF) were reported by Chou and coworkers for the first time [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 143 (2021) 12715-12724], which opened a new chapter in the field of ESIPT. Based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), the proton transfer processes of 3NTF in toluene, dichloromethane and acetonitrile were studied. By optimizing the structure of the ground (S0) state and first excited (S1) state of 3NTF in different solvents, the hydrogen-bond parameters and proton-transfer potential energy curves were calculated. It was shown that although photo-excitation enhanced the intramolecular hydrogen bonding strength and thus promoted the occurrence of ESIPT, the solvent polarities inhibited the enhancement of the hydrogen bond of S1 state, which was not conducive to ESIPT. The electron spectra analyses were consistent with experimental data, which confirmed the rationality of molecular configurations. The time-evolved excited state dynamics simulation was performed based on the optimized structure of 3NTF, indicating that the ESIPT was an ultrafast photochemical reaction less than 180 fs. Moreover, we compared the potential energy surfaces of ESIPT, electronic structures based on natural transition orbitals (NTOs) method and electron-hole isosurfaces for the 3NTF and the traditional flavone molecule (3NHF), concluded that the unusually large Stokes shift fluorescence of 3NTF was mainly caused by the coupling of ESIPT and twisting intramolecular charge transfer (TICT), and the 3NTF isomer had the more nπ* character in the electron transition process. The nπ* ICT significantly increased with the decrease of solvent polarities, affecting the molecular photophysical properties, this made it more widely used in biomedical, photochemical, materials science and other fields.

Abstract
Cu2+ and Zn2+ play crucial roles in many physiological processes, and their disorder will cause harm to human health. An efficient difunctional fluorescent probe CMC-GE-PQA for simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and Zn2+ was synthesized based on carboxymethyl cellulose. The probe CMC-GE-PQA exhibited a moderate blue fluorescence color. Interestingly, this probe showed a distinct fluorescence enhancement response toward Zn2+, while it displayed a significant fluorescence quenching response toward Cu2+. The detection limits of CMC-GE-PQA for Cu2+ and Zn2+ were calculated as low as 5.0 × 10-8 M and 1.0 × 10-7 M, respectively. The detection mechanisms of CMC-GE-PQA for Cu2+ and Zn2+ were fully verified by Job's plot, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The probe CMC-GE-PQA was applied to determine the trace amounts of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in environmental water samples. In addition, the probe CMC-GE-PQA-based fluorescent film and hydrogel were manufactured to achieve the portable detection of Cu2+ and Zn2+.

Abstract
In this study, a novel dual-function probe BMP based on benzothiazole was easily synthesized and characterized through common optical technique. In the system consisting of DMF/H2O (v/v, 2/3), probe BMP showed azure and blue-green to Al3+ and Ga3+, respectively. Besides, the binding ratios of BMP to Al3+ and Ga3+ were determined as 1:1, which confirmed by Job's plot. Furthermore, for Al3+ and Ga3+, the limit of detection (LOD) was determined to be 1.51 × 10-6 M and 4.28 × 10-6 M, respectively. Moreover, it was worth noting that BMP showed good performances in paper colorimetry, cell phone colorimetric identification and cell imaging.

Abstract
As one of the important metal ions, zinc ions (Zn2+) are widely involved in various physiological and pathological processes, and play fundamental roles in neurotransmission, cell metabolism and apoptosis. However, the convenient monitor of Zn2+ in environmental and biological samples remains challenging. In this study, a small molecule dicyanoisophorone-based schiff base incorporating with o-phenylenediamine was synthesized. It can rapidly combine with Zn2+ to emit significant near-infrared fluorescence (maximum emission wavelength: 660 nm), so it can be used as a probe to quantitatively detect Zn2+ in the range of 0-10 μM, with a detection limit as low as 4.8 nM, showing the probe has high sensitivity for Zn2+. And the probe has a fast response time to Zn2+ (less than 30 s) and a large Stoke-shift (179 nm). In addition, the high recovery rates in practical water samples, and the clear fluorescent images in living A549 cells were obtained, which are of great significance for the detection of Zn2+ in the environment and biosystem. Due to its simple operation, good selectivity and anti-interference ability, short detection time and high sensitivity, this probe has great application potential as a fast detection tool for Zn2+ in environmental water and biological samples.

Abstract
Recently, based on the mechanism of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), a new fluorescent probe named 3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-5-bromosalicylaldehyde-4N-phenyl thiosemicarbazone (BTT) was successfully synthesized [Analyst 146 (2021) 4348-4356.]. However, the importance of ESIPT processes of BTT probe and the mechanism of detecting Zn2+ ions have not been studied in detail. In this study, the photochemical behavior of ESIPT-chromophore and the photophysical changes of detecting Zn2+ ions were explained at the molecular level for the first time. The calculated spectral values were in agreement with the experiment. We not only confirmed the excited state hydrogen-bond strengthening by interaction region indicator (IRI), but also scanned the potential energy curves of BTT molecule in different electronic states, which confirmed that the hydrogen proton is easier to transfer in the first excited state. In addition, we had given the reasonable structure of the BTT-Zn2+ complex (L1) by comparing the binding free energies. The hole-electron distribution and interfragment charge transfer (IFCT) methods proved the excitation type of intraligand charge transfer (ILCT). Finally, the photophysical phenomenon of BTT for detecting Zn2+ ions is explained by calculating the electronic spectra and the energy gap (Egap) between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO).

Abstract
Detecting and imaging intracellular hypochlorous acid (HClO) is of great importance owning to its prominent role in numerous pathological and physiological processes. In this contribution, a novel AIE-based fluorescent chemosensor has been developed by employing a benzothiazole derivative. The synthesized probe displayed remarkable ratiometric fluorescent response to HClO with a large emission shift (139 nm), resulting in naked-eye fluorescence changes from red to blue. Under the optimal conditions, this probe was capable of quantitatively detecting HClO within 10 s, and possessed good sensitivity and high selectivity toward HClO over other biologically relevant species. Moreover, it has been successfully utilized to image the exogenous and endogenous HClO in living cells through dual channels, and conveniently detect hypochlorous acid solution on test strips with better accuracy, demonstrating its potential for monitoring HClO in biological and environment fields.

Abstract
In recent years, heavy metal pollution has become increasingly serious. Heavy metals exist in an environment mainly in the form of ions (heavy metal ions, HMs). They can contaminate food, water, soil, and the atmosphere, leading to serious harm to plants and animals. With high bioavailability and nonbiodegradability, HMs can accumulate through biomagnification. Consequently, heavy metal pollution has become the cause of many fatal diseases threatening human health and ecological environment. Therefore, the accurate detection of HMs is vital and necessary. In this paper, the harm and limit standards of heavy metals were systematically summarized and the common analysis methods were overviewed and compared. Specifically, the latest research progress of ratiometric photoelectric sensor, including optical and electrical sensor, were mainly described. The research status and advantages and disadvantages of a photoelectric sensor were summarized. Furthermore, the future directions were proposed, which provided the reference for the further research and application of the ratiometric photoelectric sensor.

Abstract
The development of fluorescence molecules for the fast and effective detection of L-tryptophan (L-Trp) has attracted a lot of attention because it is an important amino acid for baby growth, nitrogen equilibrium in adults, improving sleep, and mood regulation. A dimedone-phenylalanine-based chiral sensor (SDPA) was synthesized and exhibited a strong fluorescence quenching by Fe3+ and Cu2+ in a water/DMSO (3/7) solution with a detection limit of 2.29 × 10-6 M and 6.37 × 10-6 M, respectively. The factors affecting fluorescence sensings, such as the pH and competing cations, were studied. The sensor can be reused at least five times after being treated with EDTA. The Job plot, ESI-MS spectra, 1H NMR spectra, absorbance, and fluorescence titration experiments were investigated to study the mechanism of SDPA-Fe3+ and SDPA-Cu2+ complexation. The SDPA-Cu2+ complex can detect L-tryptophan and L-cysteine at trace levels by turn-on fluorescence with a detection limit of 9.35 × 10-6 M and 8.86 × 10-6 M, respectively. Moreover, applying the SDPA-Cu2+ complex for quantitative analysis of L-tryptophan in real sleep-improving capsules resulted in good recovery. The L-tryptophan level of the Elining capsule was determined at 190.8 ± 10.5 mg/g (mg L-tryptophan/g medicine), which is close to the announced quantity of 180 mg/g. Besides, the SDPA-Cu2+ complex can selectively detect free L-Try molecules and L-Try residues in proteins.

Abstract
The detection mechanism of fluorescent probe FQ-DNP (DNP: 2,4-dinitropheno) for PhSH and the detailed ESIPT process of its product 2-(6-(diethylamino) quinolin-2-yl)-3-Hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one (FQ-OH) have been revealed by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). For FQ-OH, the decreased bond length of H6-N7 and RDG analysis illustrate that the strength of hydrogen bond H6-N7 has been enlarged after photoexcitation, creating a good condition for ESIPT. To illustrate the ESIPT process in detail, the potential energy curves are performed and the transition state reaction energy is calculated. In the S0 state, the FQ-OH could happen proton transfer (PT) to form keto, but the keto form is more unstable than enol form. After photoexcitation, in the S1 state, FQ-OH could happen PT to produce stable keto form. Excited dynamic simulation shows that PT happens at 71.5 fs. The calculated absorption and emission spectra are in agreement with the experimental data, and the calculated Stokes shift is 160 nm. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and hole-electron analysis show that twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) is responsible for the fluorescent quenching of FQ-DNP.

Abstract
A novel ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe based on long-wavelength emission carbon dots (CDs) was designed for high sensitive and selective detection of Zn2+. The CDs were conveniently prepared by a one-step solvothermal treatment of formamide and glutathione (GSH). Under single excitation wavelength (420 nm), the obtained CDs exhibit three emission peaks at 470, 650, and 685 nm, respectively. For the long-wavelength emission region of the CDs, the fluorescence at 685 nm can be quenched with different levels upon the addition of most metal ions. However, the presence of Zn2+ not only results in the fluorescence quenching at 685 nm effectively but also enhances at 650 nm remarkably, which may be due to the formation of CD-Zn2+ chelate complex inducing the dispersion of CDs aggregates and changes in the group distribution on the surface of CDs. Taking the advantage of the unique fluorescence response induced by Zn2+, the prepared CDs were successfully employed as nanoprobe for self-ratiometric fluorescence determination of Zn2+ with F650/F685 as signal output. A good linear relationship in the concentration range 0.01 to 2 μM, and a detection limit as low as 5.1 nM has been obtained. The ratiometric nanoprobe was successfully applied to Zn2+ determination in human serum samples.

Abstract
Metal ions play a very important role in environmental as well as biological fields. The detection of specific metal ions at a minute level caught much attention, and hence, several probes are available in the literature. Even though benzothiazole-based molecules have a special place in the medicinal field, only very few chemosensors are reported based on this moiety. The current work describes the design and synthesis of the benzothiazole-based chemosensor for a highly selective and sensitive detection of biologically important metal ions such as Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+. The sensing studies of compound-1 showed a ratiometric as well as colorimetric response toward Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions and color changes from colorless to yellow and is found to be insensitive toward various metal ions (Cd2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Ba2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+). Further, compound-1 exhibited ratiometric as well as turn-on-enhanced fluorescence response toward Zn2+ ions and turn off response for Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. The Job plots revealed that the binding stoichiometry of compound-1 and metal ions is 2:1. The detection limits were found to be 0.25 ppm for Zn2+, while it was 0.30 ppm and 0.34 ppm for Ni2+ and Cu2+, respectively. In addition, density functional theory results strongly support the colorimetric response of metals, and the reversibility studies suggested that compound-1 can be used as a powerful chemosensor for the detection of Zn2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions. The bioimaging data illustrated that compound-1 is a very effective ratiometric sensor for Zn2+ ions in live cells.

Extended sawhorse waveform for stable zinc detection with fast-scan cyclic voltammetry. Anal Bioanal Chem 2021; 413:6727-6735. Abstract
Zinc (Zn(II)) is a divalent cation involved in regulating intracellular signal transduction and gene expression through transcription factor activity, and can act as a metal neurotransmitter by modulating synaptic activity and neuronal plasticity. Previous research has demonstrated spatial heterogeneity of Zn(II) in the brain, has estimated extracellular concentrations of Zn(II) across various brain regions, and has measured rapid intracellular changes in Zn(II) concentration during glutamate flux. Despite this work, quantification of rapid extracellular Zn(II) release from neurons, on a millisecond time scale, in real time has remained difficult with existing technologies. Here, we have developed an electrochemical waveform, called the "extended sawhorse waveform (ESW)," for fast-scan cyclic voltammetry detection at carbon-fiber microelectrodes which enabled rapid and stable Zn(II) monitoring over time. This waveform was developed to overcome existing challenges in monitoring metallotransmitters stably over time electrochemically by introducing a brief cleaning step to facilitate rapid cleaning of the electrode surface in between scans. The ESW scans from 0.5 V down to -1.0 V, up to 1.45 V for 3 ms (cleaning step), and back to 0.5 V at a scan rate of 400 V/s. Repeated introductions of Zn(II) at the electrode using a traditional waveform cause plating which ultimately deteriorates the sensitivity over time; however, using the ESW, significant improvements in stability were observed. Overall, we provide a unique approach to monitor and quantitate rapid Zn(II) signaling in the brain at carbon electrodes which will impact our ability to advance fundamental knowledge of Zn(II) involvement in extracellular signaling pathways in the brain.
