Unraveling ultrasonic assisted aqueous-phase one-step synthesis of porous PtPdCu nanodendrites for methanol oxidation with a CO-poisoning tolerance

The tailored design of tri-metallic Pt-based porous nanodendrites (PNDs) is crucial for green energy production technologies, ascribed to their fancy features, great surface areas, accessible active sites, and stability against aggregation. However, their aqueous-phase one-step synthesis at room temperature remains a daunting challenge. Herein, we present a facile, green, and template-free approach for the one-step synthesis of PtPdCu PNDs by ultrasonication of an aqueous solution of metal salts and Pluronic F127 at 25 ℃, based on natural isolation among nucleation and growth step driven by the disparate reduction kinetics of the metals and acoustic cavitation mechanism of ultrasonic waves. The resultant PtPdCu PNDs formed in a spatial nanodendritic shape with a dense array of branches, open corners, interconnected pores, high surface area (46.9 m²/g), and high Cu content (21 %). The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) mass activity of PtPdCu PNDs (3.66 mA/µg_Pt) is 1.45, 2.73, and 2.83 times higher than those of PtPd PNDs, PtCu PNDs, and commercial Pt/C, respectively based on equivalent Pt mass, which is superior to previous PtPdCu catalysts reported elsewhere, besides a superior durability and CO-poisoning tolerance. This study may pave the way for the controlled fabrication of ternary Pt-based PNDs for various electrocatalytic applications.

Yttrium-based Double Perovskite Nanorods for Electrocatalysis

Herein, we investigate the effect of the chemical composition of double perovskite nanorods on their versatile electrocatalytic activity not only as supports for the oxidation of small organic molecules but also as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction. Specifically, Y₂CoMnO₆ and Y₂NiMnO₆ nanorods with average diameters of 300 nm were prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method, in which the individual effects of synthetic parameters, such as the pH, annealing temperature, and precursor ratios on both the composition and morphology, were systematically investigated. When used as supports for Pt nanoparticles, Y₂CoMnO₆/Pt catalysts exhibited an electrocatalytic activity for the methanol oxidation reaction, which is 2.1 and 1.3 times higher than that measured for commercial Pt/C and Y₂NiMnO₆/Pt, respectively. Similarly, the Co-based catalyst support material displayed an ethanol oxidation activity, which is 2.3 times higher than both Pt/C and Y₂NiMnO₆/Pt. This clear enhancement in the activity for Y₂CoMnO₆ can largely be attributed to strong metal-support interactions, as evidenced by a downshift in the binding energy of the Pt 4f bands, measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which is often correlated not only with a downshift in the d-band center but also to a decreased adsorption of poisoning adsorbates. Moreover, when used as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, Y₂CoMnO₆ displayed a much greater activity as compared with Y₂NiMnO₆. This behavior can largely be attributed not only to a preponderance of comparatively more favorable oxidation states and electronic configurations but also to the formation of an active layer on the surface of the Y₂CoMnO₆ catalyst, which collectively gives rise to improved performance metrics and greater stability as compared with both IrO₂ and Y₂NiMnO₆. Overall, these results highlight the importance of both the chemical composition and the electronic structure of double perovskites, especially when utilized in multifunctional roles as either supports or catalysts.

Unraveling the Structural, Dielectric, Magnetic, and Optical Characteristics of Nanostructured La2NiMnO6 Double Perovskites

Double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) nanoparticles and nanorods were synthesized via a hydrothermal process, where only aqueous inorganic solvents are used to regulate the microscopic morphology of the products without using any organic template. They crystallized in a monoclinic (P21/n) double perovskite crystal structure. The LNMO nanoparticles exhibited spherical morphology with an average particle size of 260 ± 60 nm, and the LNMO nanorods had diameters of 430 ± 120 nm and length about 2.05 ± 0.65 μm. Dual chemical oxidation states of the Ni and Mn ions were confirmed in the LNMO samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Strong frequency dispersion dielectric behavior observed in the LNMO ceramics, is attributed to the space charge polarization and the oxygen vacancy induced dielectric relaxation. A ferroelectric—paraelectric phase transition appearing near 262 K (or 260 K) in the LNMO ceramics prepared from nanoparticles (or nanorods) was identified to be a second-order phase transition. The LNMO samples are ferromagnetic at 5 K but paramagnetic at 300 K. The LNMO nanoparticles had larger saturation magnetization (MS = 6.20 μB/f.u. @ 5 K) than the LNMO nanorods (MS = 5.68 μB/f.u.) due to a lower structural disorder in the LNMO nanorods. The semiconducting nature of the nanostructured LNMO with an optical band gap of 0.99 eV was revealed by the UV–visible absorption spectra. The present results enable the nanostructured LNMO to be a promising candidate for practical spintronic devices.
