Large enhancement in dissociative electron attachment to HCl adsorbed on H2O ice via transfer of presolvated electrons

Selective measurement of Cl2 and HCl based on dopant-assisted negative photoionization ion mobility spectrometry combined with semiconductor cooling

This study presents an efficient approach for the precise detection of chlorine gas (Cl2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl), harmful pollutants frequently emitted from chlor-alkali and various industrial processes. These substances, even in trace amounts, pose significant health risks. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), known for its sensitivity in pollutant detection, traditionally struggles to differentiate between Cl2 and HCl due to the similarity of their product ions, Cl-. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a novel technique combining dopant-assisted negative photoionization ion mobility spectrometry (DANP-IMS) with an automatic semiconductor cooling system. This unique combination utilizes the differential cryogenic removal efficiencies of Cl2 and HCl to segregate these gases before analysis. By applying DANP-IMS, we achieved selective measurement of Cl- ion signal intensities under both standard and cryogenic conditions, facilitating the accurate quantification of total chlorine and Cl2 levels. We then determined HCl concentrations by deducting the Cl2 signal from the total chlorine readings. Our approach demonstrated detection limits of 2.0 parts per billion (ppb) for Cl2 and 0.8 ppb for HCl, across a linear detection range of 0-200 ppb. Moreover, our method's capability for real-time atmospheric monitoring of Cl2 and HCl near industrial sites underscores its utility for environmental monitoring, offering a robust solution for the separate and precise measurement of these pollutants.

Formulation of the cosmic ray-driven electron-induced reaction mechanism for quantitative understanding of global ozone depletion

This paper formulates the cosmic ray-driven electron-induced reaction as a universal mechanism to provide a quantitative understanding of global ozone depletion. Based on a proposed electrostatic bonding mechanism for charge-induced adsorption of molecules on surfaces and on the measured dissociative electron transfer (DET) cross sections of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) adsorbed on ice, an analytical equation is derived to give atmospheric chlorine atom concentration: [Formula: see text] where Φe is the prehydrated electron (epre-) flux produced by cosmic ray ionization on atmospheric particle surfaces, [Formula: see text] is the surface coverage of an ODS, and ki is the ODS's effective DET coefficient that is the product of the DET cross section, the lifetimes of surface-trapped epre- and Cl-, and the particle surface area density. With concentrations of ODSs as the sole variable, our calculated results of time-series ozone depletion rates in global regions in the 1960s, 1980s, and 2000s show generally good agreement with observations, particularly with ground-based ozonesonde data and satellite-measured data over Antarctica and with satellite data in a narrow altitude band at 13 to 20 km of the tropics. Good agreements with satellite data in the Arctic and midlatitudes are also found. A previously unreported effect of denitrification on ozone loss is found and expressed quantitatively. But this equation overestimates tropospheric ozone loss at northern midlatitudes and the Arctic, likely due to increased ozone production by the halogen chemistry in polluted regions. The results render confidence in applying the equation to achieve a quantitative understanding of global ozone depletion.

Observation of large and all-season ozone losses over the tropics

This paper reveals a large and all-season ozone hole in the lower stratosphere over the tropics (30°N–30°S) existing since the 1980s, where an O3 hole is defined as an area of O3 loss larger than 25% compared with the undisturbed atmosphere. The depth of this tropical O3 hole is comparable to that of the well-known springtime Antarctic O3 hole, whereas its area is about seven times that of the latter. Similar to the Antarctic O3 hole, approximately 80% of the normal O3 value is depleted at the center of the tropical O3 hole. The results strongly indicate that both Antarctic and tropical O3 holes must arise from an identical physical mechanism, for which the cosmic-ray-driven electron reaction model shows good agreement with observations. The whole-year large tropical O3 hole could cause a great global concern as it can lead to increases in ground-level ultraviolet radiation and affect 50% of the Earth’s surface area, which is home to approximately 50% of the world’s population. Moreover, the presence of the tropical and polar O3 holes is equivalent to the formation of three “temperature holes” observed in the stratosphere. These findings will have significances in understanding planetary physics, ozone depletion, climate change, and human health.

Fingerprints of the cosmic ray driven mechanism of the ozone hole

There is long research interest in electron-induced reactions of halogenated molecules. It has been two decades since the cosmic-ray (CR) driven electron-induced reaction (CRE) mechanism for the ozone hole formation was proposed. The derived CRE equation with the stratospheric equivalent chlorine level and CR intensity as the only two variables has well reproduced the observed data of stratospheric O3 and temperatures over the past 40 years. The CRE predictions of 11-year cyclic variations of the Antarctic O3 hole and associated stratospheric cooling have also been well confirmed. Measured altitude profiles of the ozone and temperatures in Antarctic ozone holes provide convincing fingerprints of the CRE mechanism. A quantitative estimate indicates that the CRE-produced Cl atoms could completely deplete or even overkill the ozone in the CR-peak polar stratospheric region, consistent with the observed altitude profiles of the severest Antarctic ozone holes. After removing the natural CR effect, the hidden recovery in the Antarctic O3 hole since ∼1995 is clearly discovered, while the recovery of O3 loss at mid-latitudes is being delayed by ≥10 years. These results have provided strong evidence of the CRE mechanism. If the CR intensity keeps the current rising trend, the Antarctic O3 hole will return to the 1980 level by ∼2060, while the returning of the O3 layer at mid-latitudes to the 1980 level will largely be delayed or will not even occur by the end of this century. The results strongly indicate that the CRE mechanism must be considered as a key factor in evaluating the O3 hole.

Direct electron irradiation of DNA in a fully aqueous environment. Damage determination in combination with Monte Carlo simulations

We report on a study in which plasmid DNA in water was irradiated with 30 keV electrons generated by a scanning electron microscope and passed through a 100 nm thick Si₃N₄ membrane. The corresponding Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the kinetic energy spectrum of the electrons throughout the water is dominated by low energy electrons (<100 eV). The DNA radiation damage, single-strand breaks (SSBs) and double-strand breaks (DSBs), was determined by gel electrophoresis. The median lethal dose of D_1/2 = 1.7 ± 0.3 Gy was found to be much smaller as compared to partially or fully hydrated DNA irradiated under vacuum conditions. The ratio of the DSBs to SSBs was found to be 1 : 12 as compared to 1 : 88 found for hydrated DNA. Our method enables quantitative measurements of radiation damage to biomolecules (DNA, proteins) in solutions under varying conditions (pH, salinity, co-solutes) for an electron energy range which is difficult to probe by standard methods.

Can mitochondrial dysfunction be initiated by dissociative electron attachment to xenobiotics?

Resonance attachment of low-energy electrons to xenobiotic molecules, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), was investigated under gas-phase conditions by means of complementary experimental techniques. Electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS) and dissociative electron attachment spectroscopy (DEAS), in the 0-6 eV and 0-15 eV energy range, respectively, were applied with the aim of modeling the behavior of these pesticide molecules under reductive conditions in vivo. Formation of long-lived parent molecular anions and fragment negative ions was observed at incident electron energies very close to zero, in agreement with the results of density functional theory calculations. The gas-phase DEA process, analogous to dissociative electron transfer in solution, was considered as a model for the initial step which occurs in the intermembrane space of mitochondria when a xenobiotic molecule captures an electron "leaked" from the respiratory chain. A possible involvement of the fragments produced by DEA to the pesticides under investigation into cellular processes is discussed. It is concluded that the free radicals and potential DNA adducts formed by DEA are expected to be dangerous for mitochondrial functionalities, while several of the products observed could act as messenger molecules, thus interfering with the normal cellular signaling pathways.

Electron attachment to molecules in a cluster environment

Low-energy dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to the CF(2)Cl(2) and CF(3)Cl molecules in a water cluster environment is investigated theoretically. Calculations are performed for the water trimer and water hexamer. It is shown that the DEA cross section is strongly enhanced when the attaching molecule is embedded in a water cluster, and that this cross section grows as the number of water molecules in the cluster increases. This growth is explained by a trapping effect that is due to multiple scattering by water molecules while the electron is trapped in the cluster environment. The trapping increases the resonance lifetime and the negative ion survival probability. This confirms qualitatively existing experiments on electron attachment to the CF(2)Cl(2) molecule placed on the surface of H(2)O ice. The DEA cross sections are shown to be very sensitive to the position of the attaching molecule within the cluster and the orientation of the electron beam relative to the cluster.

Comment on "HCl adsorption on ice at low temperature: a combined X-ray absorption, photoemission and infrared study" by P. Parent, J. Lasne, G. Marcotte and C. Laffon, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 7142

On the basis of NEXAFS, photoemission and FTIR spectra of ice films with low doses of adsorbed HCl, the authors of the PCCP paper "HCl adsorption on ice at low temperature: a combined X-ray absorption, photoemission and infrared study", Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 7142, have come to conclusions regarding the behavior of submonolayer amounts of HCl at 50 K that contradict published results of the authors of this Comment. Our purpose is to argue that the conclusion, attributed going forward to PLML (authors' initials), that nearly 100% of HCl ionizes for dosage levels near to 0.16 monolayer (ML) or 0.3 Langmuir (L) at 50 K is questionable. Rather, we reaffirm our conclusions of much lower levels of ionization for similar temperatures and HCl dosages based on reactive ion scattering (RIS) and low energy sputtering (LES) data for ice films and FTIR spectra of ice nanocrystals. A second current paper by Ayotte et al., J. Phys. Chem. A, 2011, 115, 6002, that largely parallels in method and results the RAIR spectroscopy of PLML, is also given special notice.

Bond breaks of nucleotides by dissociative electron transfer of nonequilibrium prehydrated electrons: a new molecular mechanism for reductive DNA damage

DNA damage is a central mechanism in the pathogenesis and treatment of human diseases, notably cancer. Little is known about reductive DNA damage in causing genetic mutations during oncogenesis and killing cancer cells during radiotherapy. The prehydrated electron (e(-)(pre)) has the highest yield among all the radicals generated in cells during ionizing radiation and has subpicosecond lifetimes (10(-13) s) and energies below 0 eV, but its role in DNA damage is unknown. In this work, our real-time measurements by femtosecond time-resolved laser spectroscopy have revealed that while adenine and cytosine can effectively trap an e(-)(pre) to form stable anions, thymidine and especially guanine are highly susceptible to dissociative electron transfer of e(-)(pre), leading to bond dissociation in DNA. Our finding demonstrates a dissociative electron transfer pathway for reductive DNA damage that might be related to various diseases such as cancer and stroke. Moreover, this finding challenges the conventional notion that damage to the genome is mainly induced by the oxidizing OH* radical and might eventually lead to improved radiotherapy of cancer and radioprotection of humans.

Does cosmic-ray-induced heterogeneous chemistry influence stratospheric polar ozone loss?

Cosmic-ray (CR) -induced heterogeneous reactions of halogenated species have been suggested to play the dominant role in causing the Antarctic ozone hole. However, measurements of total ozone in Antarctica do not show a compact and significant correlation with CR activity. Further, a substantial CR-induced heterogeneous loss of chlorofluorocarbons is incompatible with multiyear satellite observations of N2O and CFC-12. Thus, CR-induced heterogeneous reactions cannot be considered as an alternative mechanism causing the Antarctic ozone hole.

Correlation between cosmic rays and ozone depletion

This Letter reports reliable satellite data in the period of 1980-2007 covering two full 11-yr cosmic ray (CR) cycles, clearly showing the correlation between CRs and ozone depletion, especially the polar ozone loss (hole) over Antarctica. The results provide strong evidence of the physical mechanism that the CR-driven electron-induced reaction of halogenated molecules plays the dominant role in causing the ozone hole. Moreover, this mechanism predicts one of the severest ozone losses in 2008-2009 and probably another large hole around 2019-2020, according to the 11-yr CR cycle.

Photoelectric emission from the alkali metal doped vacuum-ice interface

The photoelectron photoemission spectra and thresholds for low coverages of Li and K adsorbed on water-ice have been measured, compared with photoionization spectra of the gas-phase atoms, and modeled by quantum chemical calculations. For both alkali metals the threshold for photoemission is dramatically decreased and the cross section increased on adsorption to the water-ice surface. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the initial state is formed by the metal atoms adsorbed into the water-ice surface, forming a state with a delocalized electron distribution. This state is metastable and decays on the hundreds of seconds time scale at 92 K. The decay is markedly faster for Li than for K, probably due to diffusion into the ice film.

Nucleation of bulk phases in the HCl/H2O system

We report experimental results on the low-temperature uptake of HCl on H(2)O ice (ice). HCl was deposited on the surface at greater than monolayer amounts at 85 K, and the ice substrate was heated. The temperature dependence of the HCl vapor pressure from this phase was measured from 110 to 150 K, with the nucleation of a bulk hydrate phase observed at 150 K. Measurements were conducted in a closed system by simultaneous application of gas phase mass spectrometry and surface spectroscopy to characterize vapor/solid equilibrium and the nucleation of bulk hydrate phases. Combining the nucleation data reported here with data we reported previously (180 to 200 K) and data from two other laboratories (165 and 170 K), the thermodynamic boundaries for the nucleation of both the metastable bulk solution and bulk hydrate phases subsequent to monolayer adsorption of HCl have been determined. The nucleation of the metastable bulk solution phase occurs promptly at monolayer coverage at the ice/liquid coexistence boundary on the binary bulk phase diagram. The nucleation of the bulk hexahydrate occurs from this metastable solution along a locus of points defining a state of constant solution free energy. This measured free energy is -51.2 +/- 0.9 kJ/mol. Finally, the temperature dependence of the HCl vapor pressure from the low-temperature phase is reported here for the first time and is consistent with that of the metastable solution predicted by this thermodynamic model of uptake, extending the range of validity of this model of adsorption followed by bulk solution and hydrate nucleation to a lower bound in temperature of 110 K.

Direct observation of the transition state of ultrafast electron transfer reaction of a radiosensitizing drug bromodeoxyuridine

Replacement of thymidine in DNA by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) has long been known to enhance DNA damage and cell death induced by ionizing/UV radiation, but the mechanism of action of BrdU at the molecular level is poor understood. Using time-resolved femtosecond laser spectroscopy, we obtain the real-time observation of the transition state of the ultrafast electron transfer (ET) reaction of BrdU with the precursor to the hydrated electron, which is a general product in ionizing/UV radiation. The results show that the ET reaction is completed within 0.2 picosecond (ps) after the electronic excitation, leading to the formation of a transition state BrdU*- with a lifetime of approximately 1.5 ps that then dissociates into Br- and a high reactive radical dU*. The present results can greatly enhance our understanding not only of the mechanism of BrdU as a radio-/photosensitizer but of the role of prehydrated electrons in electron-initiated processes in biological and environmental systems.

Reaction dynamics following electron capture of chlorofluorocarbon adsorbed on water cluster: A direct density functional theory molecular dynamics study

The electron capture dynamics of halocarbon and its water complex have been investigated by means of the full dimensional direct density functional theory molecular dynamics method in order to shed light on the mechanism of electron capture of a halocarbon adsorbed on the ice surface. The CF(2)Cl(2) molecule and a cyclic water trimer (H(2)O)(3) were used as halocarbon and water cluster, respectively. The dynamics calculation of CF(2)Cl(2) showed that both C-Cl bonds are largely elongated after the electron capture, while one of the Cl atoms is dissociated from CF(2)Cl(2) (-) as a Cl(-) ion. Almost all total available energy was transferred into the internal modes of the parent CF(2)Cl radical on the product state, while the relative translational energy of Cl(-) was significantly low due to the elongation of two C-Cl bonds. In the case of a halocarbon-water cluster system, the geometry optimization of neutral complex CF(2)Cl(2)(H(2)O)(3) showed that one of the Cl atoms interacts with n orbital of water molecules of trimer and the other Cl atom existed as a dangling Cl atom. After the electron capture, only one C-Cl bond (dangling Cl atom) was rapidly elongated, whereas the other C-Cl bond is silent during the reaction. The dangling Cl atom was directly dissociated from CF(2)Cl(2) (-)(H(2)O)(3) as Cl(-). The fast Cl(-) ion was generated from CF(2)Cl(2) (-)(H(2)O)(3) on the water cluster. The mechanism of the electron capture of halocarbon on water ice was discussed on the basis of the theoretical results.

Influence of submonolayer sodium adsorption on the photoemission of the Cu(111)/water ice surface

Photoemission from an ice film deposited on Cu(111) as a function of thickness has been observed in the presence and absence of sodium atoms at the surface-vacuum interface. For either adsorbate alone and photon energies below 4 eV, two-photon photoemission from the Cu(111) substrate dominates. The Cu(111) photoelectron spectrum is perturbed by low coverages of Na, and its intensity is strongly attenuated by a few monolayers of ice. For a low density amorphous ice film, strong charging effects are observed. For ice films annealed to yield either the dense amorphous or crystalline phase, this effect is absent. Deposition of only 0.02 monolayer of Na leads to a dramatic decrease in the threshold for photoemission to 2.3+/-0.2 eV. Thus, photoelectrons are generated by visible radiation in a one-photon process with a cross section that exceeds 10(-18) cm(2). The initial state for the photoemission is identified as a metastable surface trapped electron, which decays thermally with an activation energy of 10+/-2 kJ mol(-1). Quantum calculations are described which support this model and show that the Na atom is accommodated in the first layer of the ice surface.

Electron attachment in ice-HCl clusters: an ab initio study

Experimental work has shown that small amounts of HCl strongly enhance electron capture in ice films. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of adsorbed HCl on the interaction of electrons with small clusters of water. Studies were made with clusters of 6 and 12 water molecules with various geometries both with and without one HCl attached. A number of distinct HCl coordination motifs were examined. All of the neutral structures with HCl exhibited zero thresholds for electron attachment and formed dipole bound anionic states (DBS). The relaxation processes for these "initial DBS" depended on the number of H(2)O (n) and on the number and type of H-bonds to the HCl (x). The initial DBS of systems with only O-H...Cl H-binding underwent dissociative electron attachment (DEA), forming H atoms. Relaxation for systems with ClH...OH(2) bonds was more complex. For the two layer n = 12 systems with x = 2 or 3 the HCl proton moved to the nearest oxygen to form H(3)O(+). Then rearrangement of the proton network occurred, and the Cl(-) became solvated by three HO-H...Cl(-) bonds. The presence of Cl(-) and H(3)O(+) increases the dipole moment and the electron binding energy (EBE) of the network. Further stabilization is achieved by decay into deeper DBS electron traps and/or by reaction of the excess electron with H(3)O(+) to form H(*) atoms. The HCl(H(2)O)(6) clusters with a single Cl-H...OH(2) bond behaved differently. They increased their stability by becoming more linear. This raised the dipole moment and the EBE therefore increased, reducing the total energy. None of these species showed any signs of increasing the number of H-bonds to Cl. The implication of these observations for the interpretation of the results of the experiments with 0.2 monolayer of HCl on 5 monolayer of H(2)O at 20 K, and on the possible role of cosmic ray-induced ionization in polar stratospheric clouds in ozone depletion is discussed.

Adsorption of HCl on the Water Ice Surface Studied by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The adsorption state of HCl at 20 and 90 K on crystalline water ice films deposited under ultrahigh vacuum at 150 K has been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the O1s K-edge and Cl2p L-edge. We show that HCl dissociates at temperatures as low as 20 K, in agreement with the prediction of a spontaneous ionization of HCl on ice. Comparison between the rate of saturation of the "dangling" hydrogen bonds and the chlorine uptake indicates that hydrogen bonding of HCl with the surface native water "dangling" groups only accounts for a small part of the ionization events (20% at 90 K). A further mechanism drives the rest of the dissociation/solvation process. We suggest that the weakening of the ice surface hydrogen-bond network after the initial HCl adsorption phase facilitates the generation of new dissociation/solvation sites, which increases the uptake capacity of ice. These results also emphasize the necessity to take into account not only a single dissociation event but its catalyzing effect on the subsequent events when modeling the uptake of hydrogen-bonding molecules on the ice surface.

Enhancements in dissociative electron attachment to CF4, chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons adsorbed on H2O ice

We report that the absolute cross sections for dissociative attachment of approximately 0 eV electrons to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are strongly enhanced by the presence of H2O ice. The absolute cross sections for CFCl3, CHF2Cl, and CH3CF2Cl on water ice are measured to be approximately 8.9 x 10(-14), approximately 5.1 x 10(-15), and approximately 4.9 x 10(-15) cm2 at approximately 0 eV, respectively. The former value is about 1 order of magnitude higher than that in the gas phase, while the latter two are 3-4 orders higher. In contrast, the resonances at electron energies > or = 2.0 eV are strongly suppressed either for CFCs and HCFCs or for CF4 adsorbed on H2O ice. The cross-section enhancement is interpreted to be due to electron transfer from precursor states of the solvated electron in ice to an unfilled molecular orbital of CFCs or HCFCs followed by its dissociation. This study indicates that electron-induced dissociation is a significant process leading to CFC and HCFC fragmentation on ice surfaces.

Experimental isotherms of HCl on H[sub 2]O ice under stratospheric conditions: Connections between bulk and interfacial thermodynamics

The adsorption of HCl on the surface of H(2)O ice has been measured at temperatures and pressures relevant to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. The measured HCl surface coverage is found to be at least 100 times lower than currently assumed in models of chlorine catalyzed ozone destruction in cold regions of the upper atmosphere. Measurements were conducted in a closed system by simultaneous application of surface spectroscopy and gas phase mass spectrometry to fully characterize vapor/solid equilibrium. Surface adsorption is clearly distinguished from bulk liquid or solid phases. From 180 to 200 K, submonolayer adsorption of HCl is well described by a Bragg-Williams modified Langmuir model which includes the dissociation of HCl into H(+) and Cl(-) ions. Furthermore, adsorption is consistent with two distinct states on the ice substrate, one in which the ions only weakly adsorb on separate sites, and another where the ions adsorb as an H(+)-Cl(-) pair on a single site with adsorption energy comparable to the bulk trihydrate. The number of substrate H(2)O molecules per adsorption site is also consistent with the stoichiometry of bulk hydrates under these conditions. The ionic states exist in equilibrium, and the total adsorption energy is a function of the relative population of both states. These observations and model provide a quantitative connection between the thermodynamics of the bulk and interfacial phases of HCl/H(2)O, and represent a consistent physicochemical model of the equilibrium system.

Impact of cosmic rays on stratospheric chlorine chemistry and ozone depletion

Dissociation induced by cosmic rays of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and HCl on the surfaces of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) has been suggested as playing a significant role in causing the ozone hole. However, observed stratospheric CFC distributions are inconsistent with a destruction of CFC on PSC surfaces and no significant correlation exists between ozone levels and cosmic-ray activity inside the polar regions. Model simulations indicate that this mechanism can have only a limited impact on chemical ozone loss and thus on the recovery of stratospheric ozone.
