Polarization-modulated second harmonic generation ellipsometric microscopy at video rate

Fast 8 MHz polarization modulation coupled with analytical modeling, fast beam-scanning, and synchronous digitization (SD) have enabled simultaneous nonlinear optical Stokes ellipsometry (NOSE) and polarized laser transmittance imaging with image acquisition rates up to video rate. In contrast to polarimetry, in which the polarization state of the exiting beam is recorded, NOSE enables recovery of the complex-valued Jones tensor of the sample that describes all polarization-dependent observables of the measurement. Every video-rate scan produces a set of 30 images (10 for each detector with three detectors operating in parallel), each of which corresponds to a different polarization-dependent result. Linear fitting of this image set contracts it down to a set of five parameters for each detector in second harmonic generation (SHG) and three parameters for the transmittance of the incident beam. These parameters can in turn be used to recover the Jones tensor elements of the sample. Following validation of the approach using z-cut quartz, NOSE microscopy was performed for microcrystals of both naproxen and glucose isomerase. When weighted by the measurement time, NOSE microscopy was found to provide a substantial (>7 decades) improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio relative to our previous measurements based on the rotation of optical elements and a 3-fold improvement relative to previous single-point NOSE approaches.

Mining the polarization-dependence of nonlinear optical measurements

The electromagnetic field strength present within the focal volume of a pulsed laser is routinely high enough to produce reasonably efficient nonlinear summing and mixing of optical frequencies. The polarization-dependence of the outgoing beam is a sensitive function of the polarization state(s) of the incident beam(s) and the structure, orientation, and symmetry of the sample. Mining this information hinges on two elements: (1) accurate and precise polarization-dependent measurements, and (2) reliable modeling to relate the measured responses back to local structure and orientation. The central focus of this review is on the first step. Experimental strategies for precise and accurate nonlinear optical ellipsometry (NOE) polarization measurements are summarized for the most common and simplest case of second harmonic generation (SHG), or the frequency doubling of light, although extension to higher-order nonlinear optical interactions is straightforward in most cases.

Chemically selective analysis of molecular monolayers by nonlinear optical stokes ellipsometry

The application of nonlinear optical Stokes ellipsometry (NOSE) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) is demonstrated for the chemically selective analysis of molecular monolayers. NOSE allows for rapid polarization measurements of nonlinear optical materials and thin surface films, which in turn benefits from comparably fast data analysis approaches. PCA combined with linear curve fitting techniques greatly reduce the analysis time relative to nonlinear curve fitting. NOSE-PCA is first validated with studies of z-cut quartz, followed by analysis of four thin dye films with similar nonlinear optical properties. The high precision of NOSE measurements combined with the rapid analysis time enabled chemical discrimination between different dyes and the practical realization of NOSE microscopy.

Assembly of dithiocarbamate-anchored monolayers on gold surfaces in aqueous solutions

Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) can be formed by the in situ condensation of polar alkylamines with CS 2, and assembled into dithiocarbamate-anchored monolayers (DAMs) on Au substrates in aqueous solutions. Primary and secondary amines can both be used to prepare DTCs, but have significant differences in their reactivities and product stabilities. Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy provides a convenient method for monitoring in situ DTC formation as well as the formation of potential byproducts. The kinetics of DAM assembly on Au substrates as measured by second harmonic generation (SHG) indicated first-order rate processes and saturation coverages similar to those of alkanethiols on Au. However, the rate of adsorption did not change with DTC concentration in a manner expected of Langmuir kinetics, and is attributed to the competitive adsorption of alkylammonium counterions to the freshly oxidized Au substrate. These analyses establish a practical range of conditions for preparing DAMs from polar amines using in situ DTC formation.

Visual methods for interpreting optical nonlinearity at the molecular level

The emergence of nonlinear optical (NLO) measurement approaches has provided new windows into molecular and macromolecular structure within thin films and materials. The greatest barriers in mining this structural information increasingly appear in meaningfully relating these macroscopic results back to molecular-level descriptions, driven largely by the increasing complexity of the molecular systems and interfacial architectures under interrogation. As NLO methods continue their expansion into increasingly diverse disciplines, so grows the need for tools to guide this evolution without sacrificing the mathematical rigor of more traditional tensor representations. Recent developments reviewed in this Account are designed to facilitate interpretation of complex assemblies using relatively simple but still quantitatively accurate visual representations of the polarization-dependent optical nonlinearity, both for individual chromophores and for polymeric assemblies of coupled chromophores. Although the primary focus of this Account is on second-order nonlinear optical effects, including second harmonic generation and sum frequency generation, many of these same concepts also directly apply to higher-order phenomena.
