Path integral Liouville dynamics for thermal equilibrium systems

Finite-Temperature Correlation Functions Obtained from Combined Real- and Imaginary-Time Propagation of Variational Thawed Gaussian Wavepackets

We apply the so-called variational Gaussian wavepacket approximation (VGA) for conducting both real- and imaginary-time dynamics to calculate thermal correlation functions. By considering strongly anharmonic systems, such as a quartic potential and a double-well potential at high and low temperatures, it is shown that this method is partially able to account for tunneling. This is contrary to other popular many-body methods, such as ring polymer molecular dynamics and the classical Wigner method, which fail in this respect. It is a historical peculiarity that no one has considered the VGA method for representing both the Boltzmann operator and the real-time propagation. This method should be well suited for molecular systems containing many atoms.

Nuclear Quantum Dynamics of Three-Dimensional Condensed-Phase Systems by Constant Uncertainty Molecular Dynamics

Constant uncertainty molecular dynamics (CUMD), which was developed to include nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, is extended to three-dimensional condensed-phase systems. Its applicability was verified via CUMD simulations of bulk water and ice Ih with the q-TIP4P/F potential model. The simulated radial distribution functions, proton momentum distributions, and infrared spectra were compared with those of previous studies in which the simulations were carried out on the basis of the imaginary-time path-integral formalism. We found that CUMD can function as an alternative trajectory-based simulation method for including static and dynamic NQEs in MD simulations of three-dimensional condensed-phase systems.

Matsubara dynamics approximation for generalized multi-time correlation functions

We introduce a semi-classical approximation for calculating generalized multi-time correlation functions based on Matsubara dynamics, a classical dynamics approach that conserves the quantum Boltzmann distribution. This method is exact for the zero time and harmonic limits and reduces to classical dynamics when only one Matsubara mode is considered (i.e., the centroid). Generalized multi-time correlation functions can be expressed as canonical phase-space integrals, involving classically evolved observables coupled through Poisson brackets in a smooth Matsubara space. Numerical tests on a simple potential show that the Matsubara approximation exhibits better agreement with exact results than classical dynamics, providing a bridge between the purely quantum and classical descriptions of multi-time correlation functions. Despite the phase problem that prevents practical applications of Matsubara dynamics, the reported work provides a benchmark theory for the future development of quantum-Boltzmann-preserving semi-classical approximations for studies of chemical dynamics in condensed phase systems.

On detailed balance in nonadiabatic dynamics: From spin spheres to equilibrium ellipsoids

Trajectory-based methods that propagate classical nuclei on multiple quantum electronic states are often used to simulate nonadiabatic processes in the condensed phase. A long-standing problem of these methods is their lack of detailed balance, meaning that they do not conserve the equilibrium distribution. In this article, we investigate ideas for restoring detailed balance in mixed quantum-classical systems by tailoring the previously proposed spin-mapping approach to thermal equilibrium. We find that adapting the spin magnitude can recover the correct long-time populations but is insufficient to conserve the full equilibrium distribution. The latter can however be achieved by a more flexible mapping of the spin onto an ellipsoid, which is constructed to fulfill detailed balance for arbitrary potentials. This ellipsoid approach solves the problem of negative populations that has plagued previous mapping approaches and can therefore be applied also to strongly asymmetric and anharmonic systems. Because it conserves the thermal distribution, the method can also exploit efficient sampling schemes used in standard molecular dynamics, which drastically reduces the number of trajectories needed for convergence. The dynamics does however still have mean-field character, as is observed most clearly by evaluating reaction rates in the golden-rule limit. This implies that although the ellipsoid mapping provides a rigorous framework, further work is required to find an accurate classical-trajectory approximation that captures more properties of the true quantum dynamics.

Coherent state representation of thermal correlation functions with applications to rate theory

A coherent state phase space representation of operators, based on the Husimi distribution, is used to derive an exact expression for the symmetrized version of thermal correlation functions. In addition to the time and temperature independent phase space representation of the two operators whose correlation function is of interest, the integrand includes a non-negative distribution function where only one imaginary time and one real time propagation are needed to compute it. The methodology is exemplified for the flux side correlation function used in rate theory. The coherent state representation necessitates the use of a smeared Gaussian flux operator whose coherent state phase space representation is identical to the classical flux expression. The resulting coherent state expression for the flux side correlation function has a number of advantages as compared to previous formulations. Since only one time propagation is needed, it is much easier to converge it with a semiclassical initial value representation. There is no need for forward–backward approximations, and in principle, the computation may be implemented on the fly. It also provides a route for analytic semiclassical approximations for the thermal rate, as exemplified by a computation of the transmission factor through symmetric and asymmetric Eckart barriers using a thawed Gaussian approximation for both imaginary and real time propagations. As a by-product, this example shows that one may obtain “good” tunneling rates using only above barrier classical trajectories even in the deep tunneling regime.

Small Matrix Quantum-Classical Path Integral

The quantum-classical path integral (QCPI) is a rigorous formulation of nonadiabatic dynamics, where the dynamical interaction between a quantum system and its environment is captured consistently through classical trajectories driven by forces along quantum paths of the system. In this Letter, we develop a small matrix decomposition (SMatQCPI) that eliminates the tensor storage requirements of the iterative QCPI algorithm. In the case of a system coupled to a harmonic bath, SMatQCPI provides fully quantum mechanical propagation, which also reduces the computational cost to that of a single QCPI step. Further, the SMatQCPI matrices only need to account for quantum contributions to decoherence, allowing high efficiency in challenging regimes of incoherent dynamics. Overall, this new composite algorithm combines the best features of two powerful path integral formulations and offers a versatile tool for simulating condensed phase quantum dynamics.

Equilibrium-nonequilibrium ring-polymer molecular dynamics for nonlinear spectroscopy

Two-dimensional Raman and hybrid terahertz-Raman spectroscopic techniques provide invaluable insight into molecular structures and dynamics of condensed-phase systems. However, corroborating experimental results with theory is difficult due to the high computational cost of incorporating quantum-mechanical effects in the simulations. Here, we present the equilibrium-nonequilibrium ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), a practical computational method that can account for nuclear quantum effects on the two-time response function of nonlinear optical spectroscopy. Unlike a recently developed approach based on the double Kubo transformed (DKT) correlation function, our method is exact in the classical limit, where it reduces to the established equilibrium-nonequilibrium classical molecular dynamics method. Using benchmark model calculations, we demonstrate the advantages of the equilibrium-nonequilibrium RPMD over classical and DKT-based approaches. Importantly, its derivation, which is based on the nonequilibrium RPMD, obviates the need for identifying an appropriate Kubo transformed correlation function and paves the way for applying real-time path-integral techniques to multidimensional spectroscopy.

Machine learning phase space quantum dynamics approaches

Derived from phase space expressions of the quantum Liouville theorem, equilibrium continuity dynamics is a category of trajectory-based phase space dynamics methods, which satisfies the two critical fundamental criteria: conservation of the quantum Boltzmann distribution for the thermal equilibrium system and being exact for any thermal correlation functions (even of nonlinear operators) in the classical and harmonic limits. The effective force and effective mass matrix are important elements in the equations of motion of equilibrium continuity dynamics, where only the zeroth term of an exact series expansion of the phase space propagator is involved. We introduce a machine learning approach for fitting these elements in quantum phase space, leading to a much more efficient integration of the equations of motion. Proof-of-concept applications to realistic molecules demonstrate that machine learning phase space dynamics approaches are possible as well as competent in producing reasonably accurate results with a modest computation effort.

A generalized class of strongly stable and dimension-free T-RPMD integrators

Recent work shows that strong stability and dimensionality freedom are essential for robust numerical integration of thermostatted ring-polymer molecular dynamics (T-RPMD) and path-integral molecular dynamics, without which standard integrators exhibit non-ergodicity and other pathologies [R. Korol et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 124103 (2019) and R. Korol et al., J. Chem. Phys. 152, 104102 (2020)]. In particular, the BCOCB scheme, obtained via Cayley modification of the standard BAOAB scheme, features a simple reparametrization of the free ring-polymer sub-step that confers strong stability and dimensionality freedom and has been shown to yield excellent numerical accuracy in condensed-phase systems with large time steps. Here, we introduce a broader class of T-RPMD numerical integrators that exhibit strong stability and dimensionality freedom, irrespective of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck friction schedule. In addition to considering equilibrium accuracy and time step stability as in previous work, we evaluate the integrators on the basis of their rates of convergence to equilibrium and their efficiency at evaluating equilibrium expectation values. Within the generalized class, we find BCOCB to be superior with respect to accuracy and efficiency for various configuration-dependent observables, although other integrators within the generalized class perform better for velocity-dependent quantities. Extensive numerical evidence indicates that the stated performance guarantees hold for the strongly anharmonic case of liquid water. Both analytical and numerical results indicate that BCOCB excels over other known integrators in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and stability with respect to time step for practical applications.

On-the-fly ab initio semiclassical evaluation of vibronic spectra at finite temperature

To compute and analyze vibrationally resolved electronic spectra at zero temperature, we have recently implemented the on-the-fly ab initio extended thawed Gaussian approximation [A. Patoz et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 9, 2367 (2018)], which accounts for anharmonicity, mode-mode coupling, and Herzberg-Teller effects. Here, we generalize this method in order to evaluate spectra at non-zero temperature. In line with thermo-field dynamics, we transform the von Neumann evolution of the coherence component of the density matrix to the Schrödinger evolution of a wavefunction in an augmented space with twice as many degrees of freedom. Due to the efficiency of the extended thawed Gaussian approximation, this increase in the number of coordinates results in nearly no additional computational cost. More specifically, compared to the original, zero-temperature approach, the finite-temperature method requires no additional ab initio electronic structure calculations. At the same time, the new approach allows for a clear distinction among finite-temperature, anharmonicity, and Herzberg-Teller effects on spectra. We show, on a model Morse system, the advantages of the finite-temperature thawed Gaussian approximation over the commonly used global harmonic methods and apply it to evaluate the symmetry-forbidden absorption spectrum of benzene, where all of the aforementioned effects contribute.

Inexpensive modeling of quantum dynamics using path integral generalized Langevin equation thermostats

The properties of molecules and materials containing light nuclei are affected by their quantum mechanical nature. Accurate modeling of these quantum nuclear effects requires computationally demanding path integral techniques. Considerable success has been achieved in reducing the cost of such simulations by using generalized Langevin dynamics to induce frequency-dependent fluctuations. Path integral generalized Langevin equation methods, however, have this far been limited to the study of static, thermodynamic properties due to the large perturbation to the system's dynamics induced by the aggressive thermostatting. Here, we introduce a post-processing scheme, based on analytical estimates of the dynamical perturbation induced by the generalized Langevin dynamics, which makes it possible to recover meaningful time correlation properties from a thermostatted trajectory. We show that this approach yields spectroscopic observables for model and realistic systems that have an accuracy comparable to much more demanding approximate quantum dynamics techniques based on full path integral simulations.

Sampling the thermal Wigner density via a generalized Langevin dynamics

The Wigner thermal density is a function of considerable interest in the area of approximate (linearized or semiclassical) quantum dynamics where it is employed to generate initial conditions for the propagation of appropriate sets of classical trajectories. In this paper, we propose an original approach to compute the Wigner density based on a generalized Langevin equation. The stochastic dynamics is nontrivial in that it contains a coordinate-dependent friction coefficient and a generalized force that couples momenta and coordinates. These quantities are, in general, not known analytically and have to be estimated via auxiliary calculations. The performance of the new sampling scheme is tested on standard model systems with highly nonclassical features such as relevant zero point energy effects, correlation between momenta and coordinates, and negative parts of the Wigner density. In its current brute force implementation, the algorithm, whose convergence can be systematically checked, is accurate and has only limited overhead compared to schemes with similar characteristics. We briefly discuss potential ways to further improve its numerical efficiency.

Multi-time formulation of Matsubara dynamics

Matsubara dynamics has recently emerged as the most general form of a quantum-Boltzmann-conserving classical dynamics theory for the calculation of single-time correlation functions. Here, we present a generalization of Matsubara dynamics for the evaluation of multitime correlation functions. We first show that the Matsubara approximation can also be used to approximate the two-time symmetrized double Kubo transformed correlation function. By a straightforward extension of these ideas to the multitime realm, a multitime Matsubara dynamics approximation can be obtained for the multitime fully symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation function. Although not a practical method, due to the presence of a phase-term, this multitime formulation of Matsubara dynamics represents a benchmark theory for future development of Boltzmann preserving semiclassical approximations to general higher order multitime correlation functions. It also reveals a connection between imaginary time-ordering in the path integral and the classical dynamics of multitime correlation functions.

Path Integral Energy Landscapes for Water Clusters

The energy landscapes for a discretized path integral representation of the water dimer, trimer and pentamer are characterized in terms of the localized (classical) and delocalized minima and transition states. The transition states are finite-temperature approximations to the exact instanton path, and they are typically used to calculate the tunneling splittings or reaction rates. The features of the path integral landscape are explored, thus elucidating procedures that could usefully be automated when searching for instantons in larger systems. Our work not only clarifies the role of minima and transition states in path integral calculations but also enables us to analyze the quantum-to-classical transition.

Inclusion of nuclear quantum effects for simulations of nonlinear spectroscopy

The computation and interpretation of nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy is of vital importance for understanding a wide range of dynamical processes in molecular systems. Here, we introduce an approach to evaluate multi-time response functions in terms of multi-time double symmetrized Kubo transformed thermal correlation functions. Furthermore, we introduce a multi-time extension of ring polymer molecular dynamics to evaluate these Kubo transforms. Benchmark calculations show that the approximations are useful for short times even for nonlinear operators, providing a consistent improvement over classical simulations of multi-time correlation functions. The introduced methodology thus provides a practical way of including nuclear quantum effects in multi-time response functions of non-linear optical spectroscopy.

Approximating Matsubara dynamics using the planetary model: Tests on liquid water and ice

Matsubara dynamics is the quantum-Boltzmann-conserving classical dynamics which remains when real-time coherences are taken out of the exact quantum Liouvillian [T. J. H. Hele et al., J. Chem. Phys. 142, 134103 (2015)]; because of a phase-term, it cannot be used as a practical method without further approximation. Recently, Smith et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 142, 244112 (2015)] developed a "planetary" model dynamics which conserves the Feynman-Kleinert (FK) approximation to the quantum-Boltzmann distribution. Here, we show that for moderately anharmonic potentials, the planetary dynamics gives a good approximation to Matsubara trajectories on the FK potential surface by decoupling the centroid trajectory from the locally harmonic Matsubara fluctuations, which reduce to a single phase-less fluctuation particle (the "planet"). We also show that the FK effective frequency can be approximated by a direct integral over these fluctuations, obviating the need to solve iterative equations. This modification, together with use of thermostatted ring-polymer molecular dynamics, allows us to test the planetary model on water (gas-phase, liquid, and ice) using the q-TIP4P/F potential surface. The "planetary" fluctuations give a poor approximation to the rotational/librational bands in the infrared spectrum, but a good approximation to the bend and stretch bands, where the fluctuation lineshape is found to be motionally narrowed by the vibrations of the centroid.

The collective and quantum nature of proton transfer in the cyclic water tetramer on NaCl(001)

Proton tunneling is an elementary process in the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded systems. Collective tunneling is known to exist for a long time. Atomistic investigations of this mechanism in realistic systems, however, are scarce. Using a combination of ab initio theoretical and high-resolution experimental methods, we investigate the role played by the protons on the chirality switching of a water tetramer on NaCl(001). Our scanning tunneling spectroscopies show that partial deuteration of the H₂O tetramer with only one D₂O leads to a significant suppression of the chirality switching rate at a cryogenic temperature (T), indicating that the chirality switches by tunneling in a concerted manner. Theoretical simulations, in the meantime, support this picture by presenting a much smaller free-energy barrier for the translational collective proton tunneling mode than other chirality switching modes at low T. During this analysis, the virial energy provides a reasonable estimator for the description of the nuclear quantum effects when a traditional thermodynamic integration method cannot be used, which could be employed in future studies of similar problems. Given the high-dimensional nature of realistic systems and the topology of the hydrogen-bonded network, collective proton tunneling may exist more ubiquitously than expected. Systems of this kind can serve as ideal platforms for studies of this mechanism, easily accessible to high-resolution experimental measurements.
