The Effect of Different Levels of Dietary Magnesium on Eggshell Quality and Laying Hen's Performance

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different levels of dietary magnesium (Mg) on eggshell quality and laying hen's performance. Four dietary treatments including a commercial-type basal diet containing 3.19 g/kg Mg and three additional diets supplemented with 2, 4, or 6 g/kg magnesium oxide (MgO) to provide 4.03, 4.87, or 5.71 g/kg Mg were used in a completely randomized design. A total of 120 Bovans White layers at the age of 35 weeks were fed with dietary treatments for 8 weeks. Results indicated that increasing concentrations of Mg in the diets significantly increased hen-day egg production and feed intake (P < 0.05). Dietary Mg supplementation had no effect on egg weight, feed conversion ratio, and average daily weight gain. Eggshell weight, thickness, and strength were significantly increased by adding Mg to the diets (P < 0.05). Dietary treatments significantly increased yolk weight (P < 0.05) but decreased yolk color (P < 0.05). Albumen weight, Haugh unit, yolk shape, and egg shape index were similar among the dietary treatments. Eggshell Mg content (g/kg of dry matter) was significantly increased by the inclusion of Mg in the diets. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that supplementation of Mg up to 5.71 g/kg diet improved eggshell quality and laying hen's performance.

Serum, zinc and copper levels in children with protein energy malnutrition

Serum zinc and copper were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 58 children (3 months-5 years); of these, 46 children had protein energy malnutrition (PEM), and 12 children served as controls. The levels of serum zinc and copper were found to be significantly low in children with severe malnutrition (grades III and IV PEM). There was a significant positive correlation between serum zinc and height-for-age (r = 0.8809, p < 0.001). Serum copper was found low only in children exhibiting marked linear growth retardation (height-for-age < 85% of the normal). Hypoalbuminemia (serum albumin < 2.5 g/dl), and anemia (hemoglobin < or = 8.0 g/dl) in malnourished children were associated with significant decline in serum zinc and copper levels, respectively.

Effects of growth, food intake, and dietary zinc on diadenosine tetraphosphate concentrations in rats

The nucleotide diadenosine tetraphosphate has been suggested to function as a signal molecule for the initiation of DNA replication. Previous studies have indicated that diadenosine tetraphosphate is synthesized by certain aminoacyl tRNA synthetases and that diversion of AMP from the amino acid-enzyme complex to ATP to form diadenosine tetraphosphate is facilitated by zinc ions. The growth retardation of zinc-deficient rats is associated with specific reduction in DNA replication and also with a potentially growth-limiting decrease in food intake. The possibility has been investigated that in zinc-deficient rats, lack of Zn(2+) restricts diadenosine tetraphosphate synthesis, resulting in a failure to synthesize DNA and in a reduction in growth. The results indicate that the depressed growth potential caused by the reduction in food intake associated with the deficiency was sufficient to lower diadenosine tetraphosphate concentrations significantly in the liver and spleen. However, there was no indication of a specific effect of zinc deficiency on diadenosine tetraphosphate values.
