Abstract
Biocompatible and highly fluorescent phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur carbon quantum dots (P,N,S-CQDs) were synthesized using a quick and ecologically friendly process inspired from plant sources. Garlic and red lentils were utilized as natural and inexpensive sources for efficient synthesis of the carbon-based quantum dots using green microwave-irradiation, which provides an ultrafast route for carbonization of the organic biomass and subsequent fabrication of P,N,S-CQDs within only 3 min. The formed P,N,S-CQDs showed excellent blue fluorescence at λem = 412 nm when excited at 325 nm with a quantum yield up to 26.4%. These fluorescent dots were used as a nano-sensor for the determination of the commonly used antibacterial and antiprotozoal drug, metronidazole (MTR). As MTR lacked native fluorescence and prior published techniques had several limitations, the proposed methodology became increasingly relevant. This approach affords sensitive detection with a wide linear range of 0.5-100.0 μM and LOD and LOQ values of 0.14 μM and 0.42 μM, respectively. As well as, it is cost-effective and ecologically benign. The MTT test was used to evaluate the in-vitro cytotoxicity of the fabricated P,N,S-CQDs. The findings supported a minimally cytotoxic impact and good biocompatibility, which provide a future perspective for the applicability of these CQDs in biomedical applications.

Abstract
In the current work, sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (S,N-CDs) as simple, sensitive, and selective turn-off fluorescent nanosensors were utilized for analysis of three phenothiazine derivatives, including acetophenazine (APZ), chlorpromazine (CPH), and promethazine (PZH). S,N-CDs were synthesized through a green one-pot microwave-assisted technique using widely available precursors (thiourea and ascorbic acid). HRTEM, EDX, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to characterize the as-synthesized CDs. When excited at 330 nm, the carbon dots produced a maximum emission peak at 410 nm. The cited drugs statically quenched the S,N-CDs fluorescence as revealed by the Stern-Volmer equation. The current method represents the first spectrofluorimetric approach for the determination of the studied drugs without the need for chemical derivatization or harsh reaction conditions. The importance of the proposed work is magnified as the cited drugs do not have any fluorescent properties. The fluorescence of the developed sensor exhibited a linear response to APZ, CPH, and PZH in the concentration ranges of 5.0-100.0, 10.0-100.0, and 10.0-200.0 μM with detection limits of 1.53, 1.66, and 2.47 μM, respectively. The developed fluorescent probes have the advantages of rapidity and selectivity for APZ, CPH, and PZH analysis in tablets with acceptable % recoveries of (98.06-101.66 %). Evaluation of the method's greenness was performed using the Complementary Green Analytical Procedure Index (ComplexGAPI) and Analytical GREEnness metric (AGREE) metrics, indicating that the method is environmentally friendly. Validation of the proposed method was performed according to ICHQ2 (R1) guidelines.

Abstract
Using p-aminophenol and dithioacetamide as precursors, green luminescent nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) are prepared by hydrothermal method with the quantum yield (QY) of 7.1 %. Superior properties of the N, S-CDs including high photostability, outstanding biocompatibility, and desirable biological penetration were found, which could realize the monitor of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and pH. The N, S-CDs can be designed as a fluorescent probe for sensitive detection of 4-NP in water samples with linear ranges of 0-85 µM and a detection limit of 0.037 µM. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity of N, S-CDs is sensitive to pH and shows a linear relationship with pH values ranging from 3.50 to 7.25 and 7.25-12.00, accompanied with a significant color variation of the N, S-CDs solution from colorless to brown. Finally, the proposed N, S-CDs have also been applied to monitor the 4-NP in oocysts due to its low cytotoxicity, providing a great capacity for various targets molecules detection.

Abstract
In this study, highly fluorescent sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (SN-CQDs) were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method using thiosemicarbazide and citric acid as starting materials. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were applied to characterize the prepared SN-CQDs. The synthesized SN-CQDs' maximum fluorescence emission was obtained at 430 nm after excitation at 360 nm. Rifampicin (RFP), tinidazole (TNZ), ornidazole (ONZ), and metronidazole (MNZ) all quantitatively and selectively quenched the SN-CQDs' native fluorescence, which was the base-for their-spectrofluorimetric estimation without the need for any tedious pre-treatment steps or high-cost instrumentation. SN-CQDs demonstrated a "turn-off" fluorescence response to RFP, TNZ, ONZ, and MNZ over the ranges of 1.0-30.0, 10.0-200.0, 6.0-200.0, and 5.0-100.0 μM with detection limits of 0.31, 1.76, 0.57, and 0.75 μM and quantitation limits of 0.93, 5.32, 1.74, and 2.28 μM respectively. The suggested method was successfully used to determine the investigated drugs in their commercial dosage forms. The method was further extended to their determination in spiked human plasma samples, with satisfactory mean % recoveries (99.44-100.29) and low % RSD values (< 4.52). The mechanism of fluorescence quenching was studied and discussed. The suggested method was validated in accordance with ICH recommendations.

Nitrogen and sulfur-doped carbon quantum dots as fluorescent nanoprobes for spectrofluorimetric determination of olanzapine and diazepam in biological fluids and dosage forms: application to content uniformity testing. BMC Chem 2022; 16:98. Abstract
A validated, sensitive, and simple spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the analysis of two important CNS-acting drugs, olanzapine and diazepam, in their commercial tablets without the need for any pretreatment steps. The developed method relied on the quantitative quenching effect of each of olanzapine and diazepam on the native fluorescence of nitrogen and sulfur-doped carbon quantum dots (NS@CQDs). NS@CQDs were prepared from thiosemicarbazide and citric acid by a facile one-pot hydrothermal technique. The synthesized NS@CQDs were characterized by different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. NS@CQDs produced a maximum emission peak at 430 nm using 360 nm as an excitation wavelength. Calibration curves showed a good linear regression over the range of 5.0–200.0 and 1.0–100.0 μM with detection limits of 0.68 and 0.29 μM for olanzapine and diazepam, respectively. The adopted method was used for the determination of the investigated drugs in their tablets with high % recoveries (98.84–101.70%) and low % RSD values (< 2%). As diazepam is one of the most commonly abused benzodiazepines, the developed method was successfully applied for its determination in spiked human plasma with high % recoveries and low % RSD values, providing further insights for monitoring its potential abuse. The quenching mechanism was also studied and confirmed to be through dynamic and static quenching for olanzapine and diazepam, respectively. Due to the high selectivity and sensitivity, content uniformity testing of low-dose tablets was successfully performed by applying the United States Pharmacopoeia guidelines. The method's validation was performed in compliance with ICHQ2 (R1) recommendations.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) was facilely synthesized from aspartic acid through a pyrolysis method in this work. Based on their favorable fluorescence property, CDs was utilized to design a metal ions-mediated fluorescent probe for N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) detection. The fluorescence intensity of CDs was firstly quenched by manganese ion (Mn2+ ) through static quenching effect and subsequently restored by NAC via the combination with Mn2+ owing to the coordination effect. Therefore, the fluorescent turn-on sensing of NAC was actuated based on the fluorescence quenching stimulated by Mn2+ and recovery induced by coordination. The fluorescence recovery efficiencies showed a proportional range to the concentration of NAC in the range of 0.04-5 mmol L-1 and the detection limit was 0.03 mmol L-1 . Further, this metal ions-mediated fluorescent nanoprobe was applied to human urine sample detection and the standard recovery rates were located in the range of 97.62-102.34 %. It was the first time that Mn2+ was used to construct fluorescent nanoprobe for NAC. Compared to other heavy metal ions, Mn2+ with good biosecurity prevented the risk of application, which made the nanoprobe green and bio-practical. The facile synthesis of CDs and novel metal ions-mediated sensing mode made it a promising method for pharmaceutical analysis.

One-Step Preparation of S, N Co-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for the Highly Sensitive and Simple Detection of Methotrexate. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27072118. Abstract
(1) Background: Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a new class of carbon nanomaterials with favorable features, such as tunable luminescence, unique optical properties, water solubility, and lack of cytotoxicity; they are readily applied in biomedicine. (2) Methods: S, N co-doped CQDs were prepared to develop a highly selective and sensitive fluorescence technique for the detection of methotrexate (MTX). For this purpose, citric acid and thiourea were used as C, N, and S sources in a single-step hydrothermal process to prepare the S, N co-doped CQDs, which displayed remarkable fluorescence properties. (3) Results: Two optimal emissions were observed at the excitation/emission wavelengths of 320/425 nm, respectively. The two emissions were significantly quenched in the presence of MTX. Under optimal conditions, MTX was detected in the linear concentration range of 1–300 μmol/L, with the detection limit of 0.33 μmol/L. The sensing mechanism was due to the fact that the effect of the inner filter on MTX and S, N-CQDs causes fluorescence quenching. The contents of MTX in real medicine samples were evaluated with acceptable recoveries of 98–101%. (4) Conclusions: This approach has great potential for detecting MTX in pharmaceutical analysis.

Abstract
Herein, selenium and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (Se/N-CQDs) were hydrothermally synthesized by using citric acid, histidine, and sodium selenite, which had sp3 and sp2 hybridized carbon atoms and showed excitation-dependent fluorescence behavior. Furthermore, due to the redox reaction of ABTS•+ and Se/N-CQDs, Se/N-CQDs had the excellent antioxidant capacity that it was demonstrated by scavenging ABTS•+ with the fading of blue. Based on the synergistic effect of Se/N-CQDs and Mn(II) on ABTS•+, Se/N-CQDs and ABTS•+, as a stable, sensitive, selective, and reproducible colorimetric sensor, was applied to the detection of Mn(II) with a detection limit of 1.69 μM and a linear range of 0 to 142.90 μM. More importantly, the probe was successfully applied to detecting Mn(II) in tap water, illustrating that it could be a promising tool for Mn(II) detection in water environments.

Abstract
Recently, fluorescent probes became one of the most efficient tools for biosensing and bioimaging. Special attention is focused on carbon quantum dots (CQDs), which are characterized by the water solubility and lack of cytotoxicity. Moreover, they exhibit higher photostability comparing to traditional organic dyes. Currently, there is a great need for the novel, luminescent nanomaterials with tunable properties enabling fast and effective analysis of the biological samples. In this article, we propose a new, ecofriendly bottom-up synthesis approach for intelligent, surface-modified nanodots preparation using bioproducts as a raw material. Obtained nanomaterials were characterized over their morphology, chemical structure and switchable luminescence. Their possible use as a nanodevice for medicine was investigated. Finally, the products were confirmed to be non-toxic to fibroblasts and capable of cell imaging.
