Eggs, serum lipids, emotional stress, and blood pressure in medical students

The responses of different dosages of egg consumption on blood lipid profile: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

Diverse notions exist regarding egg intake, which is one of the main sources of dietary cholesterol, and its effect on blood lipids. We conducted this study to update the previous meta-analysis for their flaw in calculated effect size. PubMed, Scopus, ISI, and Cochrane were searched up to April 2019, for relevant randomized controlled clinical trials. Mean changes in total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), LDL-C/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, apolipoprotein (apo)A1, and apoB100 were assessed. Meta-analysis of 66 RCTs with 3,185 participants revealed that egg consumption can significantly increase TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, apoA1/and B100, but there was no significant effect on other serum lipids. Dose-response analysis showed a linear effect for TC, HDL-C, ApoA1, ApoB100, and nonlinear for LDL-C, and TC/HDL-C. In conclusion, intake of more than one egg daily in less than 12 weeks may increase some blood lipids without any changes in the ratio of LDL-C/HDL-C. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: There are controversies reports for egg intake, which is one of the main sources of dietary cholesterol. This study provides comprehensive information about the effect of the number of eggs consumed per day (dietary cholesterol) on blood lipids for nutritionists, physicians, researchers, and the general population. In this regard, our results indicated that there is a linear correlation between consumption of greater than one egg per day in a short time (no long time) and increasing lipid profiles which may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, consumption of one egg daily can be safe and this can be a useful recommendation for prevention of cardiovascular disease and promotion of healthy life which indeed are the potential or actual uses of this research.

Dietary cholesterol and coronary artery disease: a systematic review

Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States and other industrialized nations. A better understanding of modifiable risk factors for CHD is critical in order to effectively prevent this disease. Dietary factors known to influence the risk of CHD include saturated fats, trans-fats, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Although higher plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of coronary disease and lipid-lowering therapy has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, the relation between dietary cholesterol and the risk of CHD is not clearly understood. This article reviews the current evidence on the association between dietary cholesterol and the risk of CHD.

Variations in plasma lipid concentration during examination stress

The effect of psychological stress on plasma lipids was studied in 40 law students (20 men and 20 women). Plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, and apolipoprotein concentrations were examined at the beginning of the quarter and during the week before final examinations. Cortisol, blood pressure, and heart rate, and self-reports of stress and workload were also measured to verify that examinations were associated with increased stress levels. Perceived stress, perceived workload, and cortisol increased before examinations. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) increased 5.8 +/- 13.9 mg/dL, and apolipoprotein B (apo B) increased 2.9 +/- 4.0 mg/dL. High density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased in women only. These changes were not due to changes in dietary intake or indexes of plasma volume. However, changes in cortisol and changes in LDL-C and apo B were associated, suggesting a neuroendocrine component to the effects. These results suggest that episodic, stressful situations may lead to potentially atherogenic changes in lipid and lipoprotein concentrations.

Influence of diet and physical exercise on plasma lipid concentrations in an homogeneous sample of young Spanish Air Force pilots

This study evaluates the influence of diet and physical exercise on plasma lipid concentrations--total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and the TC:HDL-C ratio, in a homogeneous (age, sex and anxiety levels) group of young pilots divided into the following groups: A. uncontrolled diet and exercise programme; B. controlled diet and uncontrolled exercise programme; C. controlled diet and exercise programme (n = 90). The dietary intake was a typical Mediterranean diet, which was supervised by the Flight Surgeon. The exercise was based on a physical training programme for pilots, directed by the Physical Training Officer. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory test was performed to evaluate the anxiety levels. This test was supervised by a psychologist. The results showed a marked difference in all the lipid parameters studied between groups with an ad libitum diet versus groups with a controlled diet, this difference being demonstrated by TC and TG concentrations lower in the group with a controlled diet, than in the group with an ad libitum diet. A difference in HDL-C concentrations and TC:HDL-C ratio was found between groups with regular physical training (high HDL-C concentration and low TC:HDL-C ratio) versus groups with unlimited exercise (low HDL-C concentrations and high TC:HDL-C ratio). No differences in the state and trait of anxiety were found among any of the groups. Nevertheless, all the pilots showed a considerable increase in their anxiety state over their own anxiety trait.

Lipids in psychological research: the last decade

We review the recent literature examining lipid changes during stressful experiences, and the psychological and constitutional differences that influence lipid levels at rest and that may modulate lipid response to stress. Mild forms of chronic or episodic stress are apparently not associated with alterations in lipids and lipoproteins, but severe forms of real or perceived stress do appear to alter lipid levels. Acute laboratory stress is frequently associated with short-term alterations in lipids and lipoproteins, but the significance of these changes is unclear. Several individual characteristics, such as heightened neuroendocrine or autonomic reactivity to stressors, Type A component behavior, and other aspects of personality, appear to be associated with an atherogenic lipid profile. Stress may influence lipid concentrations and metabolism through a variety of physiological and behavioral mechanisms, but none have been clearly elucidated. Future research should concentrate on understanding these mechanisms.

Effects of cholesterol and fat modification of self-selected diets on serum lipids and their specific fatty acids in normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic humans

A 6-month crossover diet plan was employed to study the effects on human serum lipids of adding margarine or butter to otherwise self-selected diets that included two eggs daily. Two groups of subjects were studied: 51 free-living normocholesterolemic and 20 hypercholesterolemic (greater than 240 mg dl). Four-day diet records in each interval showed that subjects ate about 16% of total dietary fat as either butter or margarine. Blood samples taken every 6 weeks showed variable mean serum total cholesterol (SCHOL), high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and serum triglycerides (STG). The normocholesterolemic subjects who ate butter first had by 24 weeks mean SCHOL values equal to their entry values; those who ate margarine first had increased SCHOL values throughout the study. By the end of the study, the hypercholesterolemic subjects showed either no change or a slight decrease in both SCHOL and HDL-C values. Specific fatty acids were distributed differently in the serum fractions of triacylglycerol (TGFA), cholesteryl esters (CEFA), and phospholipids (PLFA). These distributions remained constant in both normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic subjects regardless of the type and amount of fat consumed.

Glycated hemoglobin as a measure of physiological stress

The concentration of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is an integrated expression of the blood glucose concentration level in the previous weeks. The levels of HbA1c were measured in 23 medical students who had to pass an examination within a few weeks. Twelve other students served as a control group. Four months later, the blood tests were repeated. In addition, serum cholesterol was measured. HbA1c levels were significantly higher in the exam group compared with the control group. The second test revealed a significant decrease in HbA1c in the exam group, while the values in the control group were stable. No differences in serum cholesterol were detected. It is concluded that HbA1c might be of value as a measure of physiological stress.

Influence of probucol ((4,4'-isopropylidine dithio)-bis(2,6-di-t-butyl-phenol)) on egg yolk cholesterol content and performance of laying hens

Addition of the hypocholesteremic agent Probucol ((4,4'-isopropylidine dithio)-bis(2,6-di-t-butyl-phenol)) to the diet of laying hens at up to 1% significantly reduced egg yolk cholesterol content (mg/g yolk) without impairment of rate of egg production, egg weight, shell strength, albumen quality, or other production related parameters. Dietary concentration of .1% Probucol significantly reduced yolk cholesterol within 2 weeks after feeding. Higher concentrations did not further reduce yolk cholesterol. Probucol at .025% reduced egg yolk cholesterol within 4 weeks after feeding, but after 8 weeks of feeding, eggs from hens fed .025% Probucol did not differ significantly in yolk cholesterol from those fed the basal unsupplemented diet. This suggests possible adaptation in cholesterol synthesis by the laying hen.
