Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation study of the frequency dependent conductivity of a primitive model electrolyte in a nanopore

Frequency and field-dependent response of confined electrolytes from Brownian dynamics simulations

Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we investigate the effects of confinement, adsorption on surfaces, and ion-ion interactions on the response of confined electrolyte solutions to oscillating electric fields in the direction perpendicular to the confining walls. Nonequilibrium simulations allows to characterize the transitions between linear and nonlinear regimes when varying the magnitude and frequency of the applied field, but the linear response, characterized by the frequency-dependent conductivity, is more efficiently predicted from the equilibrium current fluctuations. To that end, we (rederive and) use the Green-Kubo relation appropriate for overdamped dynamics, which differs from the standard one for Newtonian or underdamped Langevin dynamics. This expression highlights the contributions of the underlying Brownian fluctuations and of the interactions of the particles between them and with external potentials. Although already known in the literature, this relation has rarely been used to date, beyond the static limit to determine the effective diffusion coefficient or the DC conductivity. The frequency-dependent conductivity always decays from a bulk-like behavior at high frequency to a vanishing conductivity at low frequency due to the confinement of the charge carriers by the walls. We discuss the characteristic features of the crossover between the two regimes, most importantly how the crossover frequency depends on the confining distance and the salt concentration, and the fact that adsorption on the walls may lead to significant changes both at high and low frequencies. Conversely, our results illustrate the possibility to obtain information on diffusion between walls, charge relaxation, and adsorption by analyzing the frequency-dependent conductivity.

Perspectives on external electric fields in molecular simulation: progress, prospects and challenges

In this review, the application of a wide variety of external electric fields in molecular simulation shall be discussed, including time-varying and electromagnetic, as well as the utility and potential impact and prospects for exploitation of such simulations for real-world and industrial end use. In particular, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics will be discussed, as well as challenges in addressing adequate thermostatting and scaling field amplitudes to more experimentally relevant levels. Attention shall be devoted to recent progress and advances in external fields in ab initio molecular simulation and dynamics, as well as elusive challenges thereof (and, to some extent, for molecular dynamics from empirical potentials), such as timescales required to observe low-frequency and intensity field effects. The challenge of deterministic molecular dynamics in external fields in sampling phase space shall be discussed, along with prospects for application of fields in enhanced-sampling simulations. Finally, the application of external electric fields to a wide variety of aqueous, nanoscale and biological systems will be discussed, often motivated by the possibility of exploitation in real-world applications, which serve to underpin our molecular-level understanding of field effects in terms of microscopic mechanisms, and possibly with a view to control thereof.

Molecular alignment in a liquid induced by a nonresonant laser field: Molecular dynamics simulation

We carried out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for a dilute aqueous solution of pyrimidine in order to investigate the mechanisms of field-induced molecular alignment in a liquid phase. An anisotopically polarizable molecule can be aligned in a liquid phase by the interaction with a nonresonant intense laser field. We derived the effective forces induced by a nonresonant field on the basis of the concept of the average of the total potential over one optical cycle. The results of MD simulations show that a pyrimidine molecule is aligned in an aqueous solution by a linearly polarized field of light intensity I approximately 10(13) W/cm2 and wavelength lambda = 800 nm. The temporal behavior of field-induced alignment is adequately reproduced by the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for a model system in which environmental fluctuations are represented by Gaussian white noise. From this analysis, we have revealed that the time required for alignment in a liquid phase is in the order of the reciprocals of rotational diffusion coefficients of a solute molecule. The degree of alignment is determined by the anisotropy of the polarizability of a molecule, light intensity, and temperature. We also discuss differences between the mechanisms of optical alignment in a gas phase and a liquid phase.
